Looking forward to getting back to human eyesight ratios instead of impractical nonsense. Not all of us wear a medieval helmet as we game.

UW gamers:
To be fair, a screen that's slightly wider than its tall will fill your cone of vision more naturally. After all, we have two eyes next to each other, allowing you to see easily in your peripheral what's left or right of you farther than you can see up or down in your peripheral, without having to move your eyes or head.

The most natural use for UW screens (21:9, or even 32:9) I see is replacing the need for multiple monitors, as it simulates having two next to each other anyway. And that's not for media consumption, but with a focus on productivity when working.

That was fun, although I do wish it was a bit more difficult. It's really easy to break the game and make most battles trivial. It's the first SRW game I've ever completed which is a surprise since I usually drop them after about 10 hours or so. I didn't bother with the wave 2 DLC though since I want to do NG+ in the future and I am pretty burnt out right now.

Human vision is about 5:3 ratio Visual field - Wikipedia Field of view - Wikipedia, which is even narrower than 16:9. 4:3 was closer to human vision. What we need is bigger, higher res, squarer displays.

I think what you are referring to is due to the distance you're sitting from a display and currently limited display viewing angles & resolution, but you're significantly reducing utilized horizontal vision space that way.

I agree that horizontal orientation is best for productivity because it allows you to completely remove the items you're not working on from your field of view. If we did that vertically we would literally induce neck strain.

Furthermore, I suspect the preference for UW is specifically that. People who want immersion but not VR, and of course the human head is more ergonomic to turn to its side than up and down.

Joking aside, the desire for UW is really about the neck + non VR immersion than human eyes.

welp i'm bored
should i jailbreak my switch so i can dump smtv and then let it collect dust
or do i get the smtv rom somewhere from the internet i have no clue about, i just hope i get no trojans, and then just idk give the switch to my cousin or something
Has anyone yet leveraged Switch roms with viruses yet (realistically, exploiting this would be quite advanced with a narrow window of victims)? Eh worse case they'll be looking for crypto wallets, nothing else.

I'd argue, 16:9 is really close to that. If you multiply 5:3 by 3, you get 15:9. That's somewhere between 16:9 and 16:10. So I think you meant that 5:3 is less narrow than 16:9.
Let's look at the ratios as a real number:

5.3 = 1.6666...
16:9 = 1.7777...
16:10 = 1.6
4:3 = 1.33333...

So saying 4:3 is closer to our ratio is objectively false.

I meant to say 4:3 was closer to human vision than UW ratios. But yeah I've seen some measures that put human vision even closer to 16:9 than 5:3, depending on the human. Regardless, human vision is narrower than 16:9.

Just don't download anything that claims it's a rom but it's actually an exe

I misread that part then, sorry.

I do like to fantasise how things like AR might change things up in this area in the far future. I'd imagine instead of bothering with displays at all, you'd just have specialised glasses that project whatever you want atop your workplace.

dude imagine how fucking epic AR screens from glasses would be
you are surrounded by monitors that doesn't really exist, with youtube running on one, steam downloads on the other, Hardcore Aunt Cass Newgrounds on the third, and netflix on pause on the fourth while you are playing just cause 3 on your main one

When i was studying VR/AR ... erm back in the day, let's say. One of the best ideas was that you were a technican working on an engine or washing machine for example and the AR goggles overlay schematics and diagnostics.

My housemate has a Tilt 5 set turning up in a few months as the finished sets have started turning up in the warehouse for dispatch. It'll be interesting to mess about with it when it turns up. It's mainly for board game type experiences at the moment and it works like Hololens or PS Book of Dreams.

imagine the dread i had when i downloaded davinci resolve before not knowing what it exactly was
Dude you have no idea. I've been checking out links so long and I've seen some shit. I'm not even joking. Only time I ever got got was a true 0-day.

I am 100% on the VR/AR train myself. I'm probably bitter about UW because I'm thinking "these fools could be on the VR train and pushing us into the future". So that's just one reason I'm so bitter and rude.

i am considering using a secondary PC just to download the rom if there is a ((legitimate)) site for those switcheromos, but i'm just seeing no good alternatives, so i just might have to jailbreak my switch and all, which is pretty lame honestly

is this version any good?
I've only watched friends play it ages ago and seen the videos. It's a bit try hard but it's totally tongue-in-cheek and playing with the dude-bro trope so don't take it too seriously but from what i remember the basic mechanics of chaining together jumps and kicks and shots to get big damage is really solid.

Kinda like Max Payne, New Doom and Dishonoured in comparison i suppose. However i'm sure i can remember some people had issues with the quips or a character or a story beat but it's been a long time so i can't remember tbh.

Don't bother with the Duke Nukem Edition unless you are a huge DN nerd as it's exactly the same game but with Duke Nukem quips and cutscene voiceovers that sometimes don't even make sense from what i've seen.

This comparison is pretty helpful:

I like the style changes and it runs better.
yeah, the upgrade is nice, and for the price... why not.

So now my haul is Ori 2 and Blulletstorm on this sale.
ohhhhhh, sorry i dunno. i'm a bit groggy from my booster jab yesterday and thought you were wondering if Bulletstorm is any good. ooops.
Don't worry about it, I appreciate you the same.

know what, think i'll just wait with it

thing is, my cousin (or idk what they're called, basically my aunt's son) has wanted a nintendo switch for a long time now, and i've been considering giving mine to him because mine was collecting dust, but his dad (which is apparently his favorite parent) is kinda a fucking ex-director of one of norway's biggest banks a.k.a. dirt fucking rich, and i dunno, doesn't seem wise of me to do that

i was just kinda looking for a way to get started with modding smtv, because if you ignore the countless fucking r34 mods, there's ongoing documentation of how enemies, demons and all of that stuff works, so i kinda wanted to jump on that wagon and get on with it myself too

Have three games in my cart that I want to buy as fodder for my deck. Having a hard time pulling the trigger though. Normally I'd at least play one game I buy on a seasonal sale immediately. Not this season though

What is the definitive version for FF VIII? Is it the PS1 version or are there mods for either old PC version or Remaster akin to Moguri Mod for FF IX?

So I started playing Halo 3: ODST, and it's not really great so far? It's basically a retreat of the a level from Halo 2, except someone thought it was a great idea to make everything crazy dark, so you need to use their shitty "detective vision" to play through it. There's a bunch of characters I don't care about, following a mission that I wouldn't care about if they even bothered to explain it.

And at this point I have just given up on Halo games to be even decent shooters. Shooting in these games always feels so floaty. Enemies show far too little reaction, jump around the level like they are doing a Mario impression and the sound design just sucks, making the shooting feel doubly bad. I have no idea so far why this series has a good reputation for anything.
Well, the sound track is nice at least. Otherwise I agree with you. I'm 90% sure Halo is a franchise fueled by nostalgia. The shooting never felt good to me. And well, reaction by enemies that's actually pretty tough seemingly for 99% of shooters ever. I still feel like to this day, the only games that really nail it is F.E.A.R. and Killzone 2+3.

Imagine not buying games for an entire year. What's next? No masturbation for a month? :flare_lmao:
oh gdi. that was a good chuckle. I definitely didn't just choke on my tea, no sir. :ROFLMAO:

Have you already played the Trails in the Sky games? I would 100% recommend you start with those. If you have, then I would also recommend you wait until the Crossbell games drop on Steam before playing Cold Steel 1. I just finished Cold Steel 1, and coming in with knowledge from the Crossbell games absolutely improves the experience, allowing you to understand more about the interconnected world and setting.
I have them, just never played through them. Probably would skip TiTS 3rd or whatever.
It's a good investment since those two games will keep you busy for at least 150 hours(*) combined.

(*) for complete missable quests and collectibles.

I recommend installing SenPatcher and HD textures mod for the best possible experience.
Duly noted, thanks.

I wouldn't recommend it. 3rd is absolutely essential in laying the groundwork not only for the ongoing storyline, and characterisation of a lot of the mainstays of the series but also the introduction of one of the most well-written antagonists in the Trails universe.

Secondly, events that occurred during 3rd is heavily referenced throughout the rest of the games, all the way to Cold Steel IV.

3rd is the shortest game, and in my mind the most bang for buck, after you have played FC and SC. I would also very much advise you don't rush the games to get to the "good" parts later. The series is incredibly consistent in its quality over the years (at least the parts I played so far).
FC has a very slow start, but it ramps up as it goes. The series lives from its writing, though, so you should be able to tell by the time you reach the second big town whether you like it at all or not.

what's the best cosmic horror/lovecraft games out on Steam? The only restriction being, I'm not really a big fan of those top-down kinda RPG's.
I posted a list a while ago so i'll see if i can dig it out but the honest answer is maybe none of them? They are all flawed in one way or another and really you have to read the user reviews and discussion pages to see if what people don't like about each one is something you can deal with, hate or even enjoy.

Here's the Steam "Lovecraftian" tag.

My favorites would be the Fallen London based games. Great atmosphere and worldbuilding with a creeping sense of dread and anxiety.

I enjoyed these, they do have flaws but they scratched an itch.

DCOTE has a couple of great set pieces and chapters but then gets a bit too FPS. It's old so it's super cheap.

Finished "Moons of Madness" recently and it's good. Some gameplay moments are annoying but if you can find it kinda cheap then go for it.

I'm interested in these:

... and two "Walking Sims" with a lot of atmosphere.

I'm posting links to steam but they may be cheaper on other stores or itch...

World of Horror - posting link to free demo on itch

Conarium

Free

edit:
I would recommend checking other stores for reviews as Stirring Abyss seems to be viewed less favorably on GoG than steam for example.

I'm not saying these are great or the best but they aren't the isometric pixel art type games that the majority of cosmic horror games took as a style in the last year or so.

Forgot this which looks crazy atmospheric but has a ton of external baggage with it.

Well, shit. Got some money this week instead of next, so now the Steam sale is very tempting lol. I really shouldn't, though. I've been playing nothing but FFXIV lately and I really should be saving the cash for when I order my computer parts next month. Or maybe just after Christmas if there's good enough deals to justify pulling the trigger early...

I went ahead and got Cold Steel 1 and 2, along with some stuff from Onion Games, namely Black Bird and Dandy Dungeon. The JRPGs will probably languish in my library while I play DD...

I like seeing constant ads for PC gamepass on Twitter (The only thing I can't block ads for on my phone), complete with a little icon near the hashtag. Meanwhile the lazy fucks still haven't done anything to prove they're actually fixing the miserable experience of PC gamepass.
