Seeing a turn-based CRPG win the TGA GOTY, in a year such as this no less, is just incredible. The reception it had on release and now this. Absolute shocker.

You fucking did it Swen.

They set a new height for what an RPG can do. Hopefully that inspires other RPGs around the world and maybe your choices will matter a bit more in some of them?

I always thought it was weird how some RPGs will give you multiple dialouge options but they don't much difference at all.

We first need to make clear distinction what is actually an RPG because everything is called RPG these days.

Yay! I'm so happy for Larian. BG3 is my Game of the Decade.

Of what was announced(that I've seen so far!), Light No Fire and Lost Records: Bloom & Rage were the ones I'm most excited for. I'm sure there will be others, but I need to comb through all the announcements.

Edit: Holy shit! An action RPG from the Ori people?! No Rest for the Wicked looks gorgeous!

That Steam Deck giveaway is such a mess.

Even if you manage to get it to load up, the entry form only accepts 5 character postal codes. No one stopped to think that maybe not all countries eligible for entry use the same format as the US.
I'm glad I did not stay up for that :grimacing-face:

People watching all this Rebirth media will have seen the whole game by the time it's out.

Yeah, what a fucking mess. Very disappointing.

Super happy for BG3 and Neil they completely deserved it although I still think Amelia Tyler (the narrator) was a more deserving winner, at the very least she should have been nominated.

Apart from that here's a list of shown games that interest me:

/end of list
everything was either a sequel or super bland and trend chasing

PS: I still don't understand how, from a narrative and cohesion standpoint, Hellblade can have a sequel and it bothers me more than I dare to accept.

Metaphor looked neat, and a couple interesting titles. Blade by Arcane is probably the highlight for me. Feels like a perfect fit.

Is something wrong with this Steam page? It doesn't even have a community page, from what I can t ell and does not load the embed here

Really confused why it wasn't the same system as last year's. Like, the only reason to change it would be to... get people to go the the TGA website?

I'm glad Arkane continue to make games... sad that it's Marvel.

I tend to take Marvel games on a case-by-case basis so I'm not writing it off completely, and the pedigree is there, but I hate how many good AAA studios making quality original IP waste valuable years making Marvel games.

On the plus side, Blade feels detached from the usual Marvel slop in tone and plot, so it could be good.

But I would've loved another game in the Dishonored universe, like Deathloop, or even a Dishonored 3 if they went back to what the first game was.

For me the only real highlights were the new Persona 3 Reload trailer and Metaphor. I'm also pretty jazzed for what Sega are doing but brand names alone aren't going to get me excited.

The rest of it was either untested new IP, sequels, or not-a-new-IP (because it looks like a copy of that other successful one).

Samantha Béart(Karlach) would also be very deserving of a nomination. Her performance broke my heart.

I'm so happy for Neil though. You can tell how much he appreciates the community and Larian.

Metaphor looks hot, but I'm not feeling a thing from Persona 3 Reload. I think it stems from the fact P3 is my least favorite of the modern trilogy and Reload feels like it's trying too hard to emulate what made Persona 5 successful instead of doing its own thing.

those were out, included on their character pass DLC

GGST Additional Character 11 - Elphelt Valentine

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R - Wonder of U

This was out too, not included on Car pass. I'm not seeing much worry about this Microsoft practice since f.e. Fast & Furious cars were included on previous Ultimate edition Forza Horizon Games.

Forza Horizon 5 Fast X Car Pack

Against the Storm is leaving Early Access today! It's had incredible word-of-mouth since its initial launch (15k reviews, Overwhelmingly Positive), and what little I played of the EA builds was fun and polished.

It's a city-builder that uses roguelike mechanics to create an experience that's less free-form and sandboxy, more structured and strategic.

I just caught up on all the TGA announcements now, a few things caught my eye (Pony Island 2, World of Goo 2, OD) but I find I can't get much from these kind of events anymore (might be a symptom of getting older? but I definitely expect having less free time to play games is one)
There are too many games out there as it is, having an hrs long cavalcade of 2 mins trailers, most of which are in CG, isn't helpful especially if you're a new and unproven studio.

Now all that being said the discussion online of the awards aspect to the show feels even more prickly than normal, perhaps more and more people are realising that the TGAs are a f**king joke as an awards ceremony and always have been.

If you want to be an end of year E3 that's fine, own it and just do it, but if you want to be a serious awards show act like it and cut the shite. Oscars of gaming my fat arse.
This 30 second countdown "wrap it up" crap is insulting and if I were a dev I'd be furious. Why the hell should you bother going?

Exodus should've been the best reveal at the awards, and it was easily the worst.

From the writer of Mass Effect, Director of DAO, KOTOR and other Bioware staff comes the most generic looking game ever made!!

ARCHETYPE Games presents EXODUS. HUMANS left a dying EARTH in massive ships called THE ARKS. Now they need to survive in this NEW GALAXY. Play as THE TRAVELER as you fight ANCIENT ALIENS for GENERIC ALIEN TECHNOLOGY. Enjoy our ACTION game with CHOICES. If you liked that INTERSTELLAR TIME DILATION please be sure to associate our game with it now. Here's MATTHEW just to be sure.

My god, AI could do better than this. Game could be good, IDK, but this reveal sure as hell wasn't.

Do Bethesda games count as RPGs?

If we're going by literal textbook definition then yeah probably but I like to think we have enough nuance as people to be able to look at things and be honest with ourselves. The truth is games most of us would never consider RPGs like horizon or nu-assassin's creed have more RPG elements and depth to them than the last handful of Bethesda games and way better writing too.

Bethesda used to be able to get away with a lot of the streamlining they were doing in the xbox 360 era because many AAA devs either still hadn't started with pulling RPG elements into their action games or were only just beginning with it. It wasn't really until the later years of that gen when you'd see games like tomb raider 2013 show up and lara had skill trees and XP and assassin's creed and far cry started experimenting with more RPG-y systems too. But nowadays everyone and their grandma makes open world pseudo-RPGs while Bethesda is still largely stuck in 2010 so it's hard to argue in their favor.

Just read that FF7R Part 2 is only 3 months Playstation exclusive, very hot shit if true.

It'll likely to go epic after the fact before steam, but at least i can play it

Of all the things to be pissed about a default message at the end of a timer used for everybody to keep things equal and the show going is not one of them tbh. Now if he wanted to say more about that and Geoff or someone went to nudge them to get on with it, sure, that'd be pretty shitty and I doubt they'd do that.

Quest Store Operations Manager @ Meta should look to making their store more indie friendly instead of relegate second rate citizens to App Lab's graveyard.

I take back what I said. I played two more hours of Dredge and just insta closed it.
Absolute dogshit of a game. Not sure what I'm missing.

Side quests
Encountered a YELLOW hooded man who asked for a specific fish. The map doesn't even pin the place, I'm not sure where he is now.
Played some more.
...
Encountered a BLUE hooded man who asks for another fish.
I got his fish but I don't know where he is either.

Best solution to the puzzle :
Close the game.

In all seriousness, it simply reeks of a good sounding concept that failed to be turned into a game.
The game is shit, the gameplay is shit, the writing is shit, there is only the idea, what if we fished in Lovecraftian waters, that's all there is to it. And even then, the writing is so barebone that it's not even moody.

We've known that since the last trailer (you can even find it in an older thread here).
A bit confused why people act like is new information but :shrugblob:

Was going to say this.
That message appears automatically at the end of the countdown, it just happened to coincide with that part of the speech. People are just looking for drama.

It has nothing to do with the message being displayed. The fucking GOTY award (and any other awards that were represented on the floor) had only 30 seconds for their speech before the "wrap it up" appeared.
The "coincidence with that part of the speech" is because he just fucking started his speech!
While Kojima got fucking 10 minutes to talk about his "game" that he had nothing to show of.

The bigger issues is that there was even a timer to begin with.

I think I see what people mean about oh it just so happened to show up at the same time as what he was saying and it looked bad.

But come on are you saying that you can't give a 1-2 minute speech for what is now the last thing that they are going to present?

It's just bad.

Let's all just go back in time and warn people about what will happen in the 2023 game wards because of what happened in the 2022.

Also RIP to those that tried to enter the Steam Deck giveaway.

It would be funny if some of this actually had to do with that.

I guess that Lenovo wanted in on some of that action as well.
-----------------

Just remember using cringe jokes to eat up at time and PAY for special guest to be there (and also eat up at time) is a lot more important than hearing some devs heart felt speech, not only that the fact that they just causally name devs and then move on is also rather sad.

This whole thing should be 2 separate events:
  • whatever 95% of the show is right now, with adverts and trailers and Kojima's jerking off
  • a show just to present awards and give a voice to those who are usually in the backstage. We don't need hollywood actors to try to legitimize the event or a big shinny venue. Just get a decent enough room and let the industry heads and people present the awards and talk about stuff. It doesn't need to be bombastic, it doesn't need sponsors or trailers or none of that garbage. Keep that in the first event which will be enough to fund the second.

Yeah I've seen people across the internet try to shut down some of the criticism with things like "everyone's there for the reveals" or "they need ads to pay the bills" and I think besides stating the obvious it's also missing the point. They gave winners, of which they only do like...5 on stage awards(?), 30 seconds to speak and often immediately followed that up with something insane like that 10 minute incoherent kojima nonsense. You can cut that or the muppet crap down some and spread that time to the devs without touching the ads or reveals.

And even with the reveals and ads I'm sure you could cut a single 30 second ad away and not kill your revenue, and I absolutely know you could cut away 1 reveal every year and not miss anything. I guarantee if I looked at the list of reveals at each TGA I could find ONE game where I could erase that and 99% of people wouldn't care at all. Geoff's events have so many mediocre looking 70-tier dark action games with peak generic names like The Forgotten Warrior or generic one word names like Banishers and no one will care if one or two of them disappeared and that time was spread out among the award winners. Yeah people are there for the reveals but not for those games I can assure you.
