Looking at the amount of followers and "wishlist activity" it had post announcement/pre-release, I'm really surprised by how badly Code Vein 2 did, especially compared to the peak CV1 had all those years ago. There must have been a serious fuck up here, either for the performance issues, the price, the changes compared to the original (lack of multiplayer component, more "alien looking" NPCs, weird pseudo realistic anime artstyle), or because Nioh 3 is releasing so close to it
This is probably the first major failure for 2026
Seems like a perfect storm of bad performance (UE5 claims another victim), feature regression compared to the predecessor (no co-op), the game itself having issues + 70€.
I also think the graphics look weirdly off, especially the character models.

Also frankly all these mid-budget anime games are getting their lunch eaten by chinese gacha games at this point.
I have my issues with the game, but Arknights Endfield which released 1 and a half weeks ago, looks incredible AND while being incredibly well optimized and is free.

Isn’t the first game incredibly middling, anyway?

And as Ascheroth said, there’s plenty of free gacha games that accommodate all the gooning angles.

Barely 50% positive reviews on steam, which is actually fairly hard to achieve for a AAA game not mired in culturewar controversy.

Personally, i'm mostly disappointed by them doing away with the Edgy Anime Vampire Asthetic that made the first game feel like an early 2000's anime.

I looked at Pinball FX because they seem to be the license holders to Williams pinballs.
Now, I don't give a fuck about pinball, but for curio's sake, I wanted to play Gorgar, Swords of Fury, Embryon, Cosmic Gunfight, and Centaur, which are going to be adapted into TTRPG. Don't ask, some people do hard drugs.

I think they only have Swords of Fury. I hereby labeled Pinball FX as trash of the highest order. I'm fair.
Now that's something weird and wild! Gorgar, and Centaur were previously licensed and ported by Farsight for their Pinball Arcade game, Embryon and Cosmic Gunfight (and too many others) never.

Gorgar is one of my favorites, but the video game conversions will never get how fucking terrible it is playing with a table that isn't absolutely pristine and trying to make it up the field against gravity with only minutes old rubber and decades and roughness perhaps?

I know it’s a bad look, but they really should cut loose on Civ VII and begin work on the next one.

The game is foundationally broken and they won’t be able to fix it. Just chalk it up to a failed experiment, move on to Civ VIII to release 3-4 years from now, and start supporting Civ VI again in the meantime.

What a mess.

I guess the landscape of anime games is very different compared with 2019. Most high profile anime games are releasing on Steam on day 1 now, when we didn't have a lot of options until 2021 / 2022. Gacha is another huge factor, like others have said.

Honestly looking at those Civ 7 change it looks pretty great. I dunno why people are mad about them trying to fix the game. Like let them make the game good if they want to.

The changes from the Legacy system to Triumphs seems pretty monumental. The triumphs are enabled all the time and give you stuff to work towards and earn bonuses like the previous system used to b but this seems much clearer and easier to understand. It just a jcie set of optional objectives that get you stuff and can point you towards a victory or not. Seems like a great idea.

Also big changes to UI and victory conditions are great ideas to help the game. Allowing people to play the whole game as one civ or switch if you want and having systems for both ways is good compromise.
