I'm late on the Steam Deck news but I am bowled over, it looks great, and the sort of thing that suits my needs exactly going forward for what I want from PC gaming tbh

Soon as my current build falls over (and considering I can't even run W11 it may be sooner than I thought after all) I'll get one of these

What I love about it is that it's another realization of one of the dreams and goals of the PC and computing - for the hardware form factors to be diverse while leaving the choice of the software to the user. They are far from the first to do it, but it always heartens me to see it happen.

Crusader Kings 3 on the go with mods. my god. but I really should not be excited for something that might not be available here.
I'm sorry for your loss.
One of the first things I first thought about Steam Deck was "how many people will not be able to buy this regardless their country wealth state" like yours (Norway = rich country) , Swiss (same applies here) or just people anywhere else in the planet (China. SouthEast Asia etc).

We have on Meta a large and varied mix of people across the globe and it makes me feel sad regarding this particular issue and probably I must admit I should be thankful to live even in a remote area of Africa which is part of Spain.

I really hope Valve can work on bringing Steam Deck to more countries in the world as soon as they can.

Yeah, I think the Deck will reach lots of different audiences.

I also don't like people's absolutism. Like, it will be a Switch killer, it won't touch the Switch, Nintendo don't need to care, it will only reach a niche market.

In general I don't like absolutism like the above, like because the Deck can go anywhere. We don't know how it will do.

Yeah, there are no doubt lots of country were the majoority of people, like Norway, wouldn't have much money problem in buying a Deck, but the Deck might not be available there.

There are an increasing amount of people playing on PC here in Norway, many of my friends who were previously console only have moved on to PC and Valve are missing out on these potential customers in other ways than just Deck, like Index and previously the Steam Link and Steam controller.

Gaben's Deck is quite a thick boy, almost 700g and 50% heavier than a Switch, could become uncomfortable to hold quickly. Also annoying that you have to buy the biggest version to get the best screen/glass. But that are the only real negatives I can spot. Okay, one could be that this is Valve's first try at this. Probably gonna preorder and then think about it some more.

also - welcome back! :)
Thanks. :coffee-blob:

yeah, this one really sucks ... it should be the same on all of them ... or AT LEAST have the anti-glare glass on the middle one as well

Interesting! I have been following the situation with M1 Macs and Steam for awhile. And came over some info in a patch note for Baldurs Gate 3.

Users playing BG3 on an M1 machine now have the option to run the game at a higher performance via ARM64. Please be aware, ARM64 is not yet supported by Steam. Steam integration and cross-saves are currently only available via Rosetta.
That would explain why there aren't many native M1 ports yet on steam. And why some devs have Macs versions of their games but don't release them on Steam. Hopefully Valve will deal with the issue soon. I realise that they don't really priorities Macs but I still hope they don't forget me.:S

Initially, in its first few years, the Deck will be a niche device, just due to things like the current chip shortage the stock will probably not be able to keep up with demand.

The more interesting question is whether there will be a long term sustained demand for the Deck, whether it will continue to be supported and continue to sell well in a few years.

If the device really delivers on performance and compatibility with the Steam library, I could see this being incredibly popular

I bugged SteamDB's owner about it, because he should be able to list all of the Steam games which use EOS.

The issue is he was not interested in doing that.

Thanks for asking. Sucks but at least now I know there are games do this. Definitely no go for me. :face-without-mouth:

Seeing Dead Cells footage in the Steam Deck page reminded me how good that game was. I played it for 25hrs during its early period and never returned to it. Game was amazing but kind forgot all about it. I really should play it again and see all the content updates/dlc for it.

Seems like a perfect for Deck game along with all the other classics over the years like Hollow Knight, Spelunky 2 etc. I still haven't played Hades as well.

Oh man now I am really getting hyped for Rogue Legacy 2 leaving early access :blobdrool:

Developers don't get a single cent from your used copy purchase anyway. Easier to just sail to the high seas and you can get undub versions that way too. Make sure to compress your game images as to not waste space.
Just on the note of compressing games, for GameCube and Wii games you should use the RVZ format rather than the ones mentioned in the Reddit post. You can convert to RVZ in dolphin easily.

And for PS1 I'd recommend CHD, it usually compresses better than PBP and is supported by the PS1 emulators too.

I really doubt that the Community Manager tweeting fun stats has any impact on patching and update cycles though.
I wonder if the huge hack and the mitigations required have had more of an impact than some people realise?

Info suggesting Patch 1.3 is imminent and chunky has been going around for a few days so i'd expect to see some less fun tweets from CDPR regarding cyberpunk 2077 soon.
The pr people probably gotta work with what they have, which is to say not much as probably even the devs don’t have a detailed roadmap because they cannot quantify how much of an effort will be to fix stuff
Then communicate what they are working on, what is expected to be fixed, what new content is planned. So far it was absolute silence from CDPR, only those stupid stats and posts when patches go live. They could handle it far better than they are doing it right now.

So I was thinking about the Deck.

You know that personality type where whenever the topic of an interesting PC indie comes up they always shoot back, "Yeah it looks cool, but please please please put it on Switch!"

What happens to that crowd now?

Nothing is “planned” when they’re likely unable to quantify the amount of work needed and thus give a reasonable estimate, and communicating a wrong deadline would hurt them more than staying silent
Management here was the one that gave the okay for the botched release, and thus caused a bottleneck because now they gotta pick between either fixing the game or making new content.

May not be the answer you like but that may be what’s going on.

I get why the “Switch killer” talk is a thing, but honestly it seems pretty overblown to me. If Steam Deck is anyone’s gateway into Steam or PC gaming, then great, but overall it seems to be positioned as a complement to a traditional gaming PC, not as anyone’s primary gaming hardware.

plus I still have questions about the execution (Proton compatibility, lack of cloud saves on some titles, text size in many games not being legible on a small screen)

Largely agree.

We live in a world of Winners & Losers, with nothing in-between. What a horrible way to go through life.

Let the squawkers squawk. I'll be over here enjoying Deck.

90% of the "can I do X" questions about the Steam Deck can be answered with a simple "it's a PC, yes you can". People really got used to not be able to do what they want with the hardware they own :(

And yes, one day and all the talk bringing "console wars" mentality to it is already getting really annoying..

I'm just really happy that Valve didn't use this opportunity to close down Steam or the hardware even a little. For all it's faults, we are very lucky that it was them that set the standard for PC gaming. Imagine if Games for Windows Live had been successful.... now there would be a lot of Windows Store only games.... ouch.

In defense of some of those people, we're talking about a custom APU that's supposedly a cut-down version of the one found in current-gen consoles. There's the question of compatibility with drivers etc., especially when it comes to potentially installing Windows on it.
