The 256gb is a little too pricey for me
16:10 and letterboxed content ?
Bezel looks like Switch Vanilla
Hard not to think that when you get such amazing gems like this also:
It's fun reading this stuff. FGC twitter has been going on and on for the last few weeks about how difficult it would be to run a PC tournament due to price and specs. It's almost like Valve has been reading it.
Tits.Over 11,000 concurrent players
As every sensible person should do (I mean, if they buy a Deck). Why pay higher for a library that can be nuked on a whim.I have a buddy that likes to buy almost everything on Switch so he has the option to play it in bed, or on the couch. He's reserving a Steam Deck tomorrow and migrating pre-orders for Switch/PC multiplats moving forward to PC.
Agree 100%, I think folks are really underestimating game prices on Switch vs. PC as they seem more focused on just the price differential of the devices themselves (to say nothing of performance differences).I would much rather buy any non Nintendo games that I want to play that way on Steam/Steam Deck then pay the awful prices you find on the Eshop.
Exactly my issue with Nintendo. I have mostly stuck to physical purchases only as I do not have confidence Nintendo will allow digital purchases to be carried forward to their next device. As every sensible person should do (I mean, if they buy a Deck). Yeah they really screwed that up with Wii / Wii U.Exactly my issue with Nintendo. I have mostly stuck to physical purchases only as I do not have confidence Nintendo will allow digital purchases to be carried forward to their next device.
It all boils down to how you plan on using the Deck. There is also the issue of heat and power hungriness. eMMC is seemingly slower but NVMe are seemingly hotter and more needy. Mmh.
Wondering if the middle choice is the right one or maybe the supposedly bad first choice is not so bad ?
The value-add that this having direct access to all of Steam's past, current and future library including the price-competition from all the 3rd party stores seriously can not be underestimated.I have a buddy that likes to buy almost everything on Switch so he has the option to play it in bed, or on the couch. He's reserving a Steam Deck tomorrow and migrating pre-orders for Switch/PC multiplats moving forward to PC.
Yeah, I think the middle tier is looking to be the sweet spot if you're more of a "power user".The 399$ is really for the Switch fans who want a basic PC handheld experience. Which is fine.
I'm still surprised that (going by online rankings) nearly half of those are on PC.
Looking at the size and weight, you are more likely to break your wrist when it slips...Dear god, I hope you can put a wrist strap somewhere
Yeah, that's what I've been wondering too.I really like the idea of Steam Deck but getting it to function as a proper PC on which I can play non-Steam games seems like it’d be more trouble than it’s worth. Would love to be wrong, though
Not even dual boot, you can pretty much delete SteamOS and use it as a windows machine. It’s basically a PC with Linux OS. If the launchers have Linux version, then it works fine. I guess not that many have Linux version though, so you end up using Wine or install dual boot config with Windows.
529 one just because NVME, it's worthy IMOI don't know which version to reserve. Either the $399 or the $529 one.
Yes of course but if you want to use both. Just assuming some of those features might be SteamOS only. Let’s see.Not even dual boot, you can pretty much delete SteamOS and use it as a windows machine.
I hope that happens!Steam Deck will be a huge success and probably change the landscape of PC gaming for generations to come. It'll become a hot item and sold out everywhere for the first years in the market. After a while, Valve can release improved versions of Deck, and the cycle continues.
You'd probably lose the custom UI/UX (e.g. suspend) though in that case, which would make it a significantly worse handheld IMHO.Not even dual boot, you can pretty much delete SteamOS and use it as a windows machine.
I honestly can't see other scenario unless valve mess up something at launch. There is universal praise in most places, and PC community like us are largely excited. The first impression is great. I think the Deck will be a huge success and create many more new PC gamers.Steam Deck will be a huge success and probably change the landscape of PC gaming for generations to come. It runs an Arch Linux fork. For GOG, if you don't want to install games separately, you can use Minigalaxy. For others like Battle.net or Origin, you'd have to use Wine/Proton/Lutris or whatever.Yeah, that's what I've been wondering too.
How would other launchers work on the Deck? Can you install them on the OS or do you need Windows? And how about the games' compatibility?
I think due to the pretty large black bezel around the screen, the visual impact of letterboxing will probably not be so bad, compared to something like an Ipad, where the screen has nearly no bezel, or only a very thin one.I need to determine in what way a Steam Deck would be better than a phone + controller, apart from the obvious streaming requirement.
And the 16:10 thing scares me for emulation, I don’t really like how media look on an ipad With the black bars.
At worst I lose 4 euros today, but that’s not the point, help me fam.

It's Valve move in that they probably don't care what their competitors or anyone else thinks about it, they just do what they want to work on, really.Yeah, it looks like it may actually bring a whole new audience too. Here's a copy paste of my post from the other place.
So if I understand this right, for the average Steam Deck users and new to PC gaming, games that are not on Steam might as well do not exist because you need to go above and beyond to run games from other launchers. Yes, you can dualboot Windows on it but let's be real, will the average users do that and waste quite a chunk of the already limited space for another OS? And when you're booting from Windows, you'll lose the slick SteamOS features for the device and it'll become a normal PC. You may install other launchers on SteamOS, but each of them also has its own characteristics and compatibilities too, so it'll get ugly the more you dig into it. Again, for average users these may not be worth the hassle.
Ultimately, it'll be interesting how the publishers and PC launchers (EGS, Uplay, B.Net, GOG, etc) would react to this. There's going to be a whole new audience that they need to reach, but they're only available on Steam. So they either have to release their games on Steam or lose the entire market. Of course, all of this will depend on the success of the Steam Deck, but judging from early receptions it might probably be.
This is a very Valve move, so subtle and yet malicious(?) to the competitors. But it's probably just me looking too much into it.
