The Last Ninja Collection + Bonus Games

The Last Ninja Collection brings together seven iconic titles for the first time, celebrating the golden era of retro gaming and the preservation of pioneering games from the '80s & '90s. The Last Ninja series is one of the most beloved and successful franchises, known for its innovative gameplay, memorable graphics, atmospheric music and blockbusting reviews.

This collection includes The Last Ninja, Last Ninja 2, Last Ninja 3 and Ninja Remix, alongside critically acclaimed titles like International Karate, IK+ and Bangkok Knights. These games were milestones in the gaming industry, pushing the boundaries of technology and making them available to play on Windows PC.

The original developers of these games were pioneers, experimenting with new technologies and game-play mechanics that would lay the groundworks for today's video game industry. The Last Ninja series sold over 23 million copies across the trilogy, cementing its place as one of the most influential and best-selling titles of the 8-bit computer gaming era.

Last Ninja 2 follows Armakuni's quest for vengeance in modern-day New York against the evil Shogun Kunitoki, featuring atmospheric, isometric environments. Last Ninja 3 received a perfect 100% review score, being the first computer game to achieve this.

International Karate (rebranded as World Championship Karate in the USA) was the first European game to top the USA C64 billboard charts and the first European company (System 3) to achieve this. IK+ is a multi-award-winning retro classic, introducing improved graphics and gameplay with AI. Bangkok Knights was the first fighting game to feature large, distinct characters, inspiring the very first Street Fighter game.

The importance of video game preservation is highlighted – ensuring classic games remain playable and providing valuable resources for researchers and developers. System 3 is proud to have contributed some of the most iconic and influential games on the C64 and Amiga platforms, leaving an indelible mark on the action-adventure genre.

If you mean labor of love Warframe already won it in 2017 and the guildwars stuff shows up there
Yes but you can't vote for Guild Wars 1 for some reason (while 2 is eligible). Also I was pretty sure Final Fantasy XIV won at some point as well but you can vote for that too

I actually disagree with this take on PB. Their most ambitious game, by far, was Gothic 3. And it was an incomplete, disfunctional mess. It was never really fixed and I understand that there was some fuckery going on with the publisher JoWood, but I think it's also fair to say that PB kinda dropped the ball and then went back to making much simpler games that were just poor copies of their "good old days".

I'll take your word for it. I was so disillusioned with Gothic 3 that I had largely forgotten of it's existence. The game was so incredibly and unbelievably buggy when it came out that I couldn't believe anyone would release a piece of software in that state. That was, of course, before the era of games like Diablo 3, Battlefield 4 and No Man's Sky which not only normalized games releasing in a broken state, but kind of made it the expected outcome. I've always maintained that I am willing to accept bugs and lack of polish in games (endearingly or disparagingly referred to as 'eurojank') if the trade off is the game having depth and ambition. But Gothic 3 was just a bridge too far. I specifically remember an early game breaking bug I ran into where I had to kill some animal for a quest and every time I would swing my weapon, either my character or the animal would get launched into space. Then you'd reload the save and try again and get the exact same outcome every time. Even the most patient gamer in the world would find the game bugs unacceptable.

And you're right about Risen... the games in that series were fun but it was clear that they played it very safe from that point on. Basically they abandoned ambition for polish. That meant the game played fine but there was no innovation and no depth or complexity in how you'd play it. Almost reached the status of theme park RPGs and like I mentioned, they were just never able to refine their craft to take it to a higher level.

That's revenue, not profits, though I'm sure they're pretty ungodly as well but it likely doesn't take in account even basic things like say, the servers they rent worldwide and the people working on those companies as they aren't Valve employees.

I've seen that gamers and game journalists seem to have a disproportionate interest in Valve's revenue as compared to other companies like Nintendo or Sony. Part of this is probably because we actually have no idea what the reality is given that they're a private concern, but my hot take is that this specific fascination is just another expression of their belief that Valve does not deserve to earn as much as it does. In other words, the old "Valve doesn't deserve 30%" jellybean.

I continue to remain baffled at people who don't understand Valve's success. They are a PC gaming company that have remained a PC gaming company when all their peers turned towards the supposedly more lucrative console market. They have spent the last 2 decades building out features in Steam to make the PC gaming experience better. They created an ecosystem where anyone from the smallest indie dev to the biggest corporation have an equal chance to find success, something that is not generally reflected in other walks of life. This might be somewhat controversial but I would say that the indie gaming scene owes almost all of it's success to Steam. Steam is where some genres were founded or found success. Odds are you have heard of or own a game from developers in Osaka or Jakarta or Cairo or Montevideo. Would that have been possible without Steam? Even their decision to allow porn games has given an outlet to developers and communities while Valve (mostly) shields them from the bullshit that puritan organizations try to pull. Did you know there are some porn games that have higher CCUs than some AAA games? And then there's their investment in VR, in Linux, in handheld and now living room hardware. And they've done all of this while building trust with a community of hundreds of millions of gamers over 20 years. That is why they are successful and deserve their reward. This endless handwringing of their cut seems like a disingenuous campaign where game journalists and some indie developers fan the flames in an attempt to put pressure on Valve to change.

Well deserved. As far as I'm concerned, this is the best 'Sony' game on Steam. The year long delay was unfortunate but it resulted in a beautiful PC port that looks amazing, runs incredibly well and was bug free. A really fun game that mixes the fun and flashy combat of DMC with a souls like structure without the punishing difficulty. The story wasn't half bad either but it was similar enough to Nier Automata for many to just call it a ripoff. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game and even went to the trouble of finding all the (1000+!) collectibles in it. Not something I usually do in a game.

In regards to voting, I have no idea what to put in Innovative Gameplay... feels like I havent played any groundbreaking games this year. Also not sure what to put in sit back and relax...

I would recommend that you try Split Fiction if you haven't already played it. That game is so much more than a simple co-op platformer. They introduce different mechanics in every level but the real genius of the game is that each mechanic is used in multiple different ways within a level. You cannot go 15 minutes in that game without finding a new and innovative way to apply the game mechanics to solve a puzzle. It's constantly stimulating and fun to play through. Durante mentioned Popucom and that was also a good game with a similar premise. But I found that game had some floaty physics based mechanics which were a bit cumbersome and it just lacked the sheer variety of puzzles that Split Fiction has.

I guess I'll throw in my nomination sheet as well

Dynasty Warriors Origins was a super fun game to play but that was down it's amazing combat. It deserved some recognition so I threw it into the story category because hey, it's the Romance of the 3 Kingdoms story but that is definitely an out of place nomination. Pretty happy with the rest of my list. Indiana Jones was a criminally overlooked game because of when it released. Very buggy at launch but also the closest we've come to a high budget immersive sim in years. Umamusume has a very cheerful and ridiculous soundtrack, which, honestly, sort of describes the game itself.

I found this interesting looking upcoming RPG

They describe it as such;

Glasshouse is an isometric Turn-Based-CRPG set in a post-capitalist Feudalpunk world at the dawn of a terrible world war. Inspired by RPGs such as Disco Elysium and Pathologic, Glasshouse promises an intense narrative-roleplaying experience punctuated by unforgettable characters, complex dialogue trees, multiple endings and deep ideological introspections that go beyond the screen.

You are Wealdmaer, a deputy head of condominium obsessed with the desire to be remembered as a “righteous” leader. Stuck in a crime scene from which you cannot escape, you manage the problems of the poor souls in Dormitory 73B, survive your flatmates, and fight a political conspiracy that will challenge your ideological faith forever.

I really like the idea of RPGs set in small but dense and alive game worlds and this one being set entirely in an apartment complex piqued my interest.

To put it into perspective, Gothic 3 was trying to do a massive open-world, with relatively large cities that you can walk into, take quests from and do all the things you could do in Gothic 2, but on a 10x scale. It was released in 2006. There were no loading screens, it was all meant to seamlessly stream in. Cities were occupied by orcs, and you were meant to dynamically push the main story to either free the cities or alternatively join them and help them on their conquest. I also think there were meant to be a ton of dynamic systems on top of that, mostly non functional and of course tons of crashes and bugs everywhere.

One of the best things I've seen in gaming this year

Indie games continue to push boundaries and make gaming better. Even outside their games

bosses on big games:
"How the fuck would I know what they did?"

sometime later:
"Ok, just give me a quick and short summary of what you did."

immediately after:
mayhem and carnage in the dev offices because of devs fighting over who did what.

hoo boy, checked the ram prices out, my 64gb kit from Kingston has gone from 200€ in june 1st to 509€ right now, a 300 buck increase or 150%
but my overall build "just" got 150€ pricier because the GPU got 130€ cheaper and 20€ cheaper on other parts of the build

I was hyped for the game, got it at launch and I still remember going north to the orcs, standing on some mountain, immediately being considered hostile and then every orc on the map coming to me, popping out of the ground instead of climbing the mountain. I played whack-a-mole with orcs for what felt forever and then the north was empty :D

"Notably, Santa Ragione said Horses was denied entry onto Steam before payment processors reportedly began imposing adult content restrictions onto video game storefronts. The studio said Valve rejected the title back in 2023—when it was still in a rough, incomplete state—but failed to provide a detailed explanation as to why it had been blacklisted."

So this is related to the old, unpredictable and case-by-case rule of rejecting games on Steam rather than anything new.
One as to wonder if it has anything to share with the fact that Saturnalia was EGS exclusive at the time

I think over the Christmas break I will install the motherboard, PSU and graphics card I grabbed a little (long) while ago and make the switch over to Linux. All the AI stuff being pushed into Windows means I no longer want to use it. Plus also having to give them money because my install is an OEM is a pain as well.

Yeah VRR is pretty sweet! Remember to always turn off vsynch! (at least I think that is what one is supposed to do with VRR.XD)
Nope, you want vsync on even with VRR (if you hit the target maximum refresh rate that is)
Valve does some dumb decisions regarding which games they don't want to publish on Steam. Why not say what violated the store policy?
They did say it even not mentioning the specific scene. It refers to a segment of the 2023 build which featured and underage girl riding (not sexually) a naked man disguised as a horse. Valve stated they not allow any depiction of underage """""sex""""". What's wrong here is that the studio changed the scene featuring now an adult woman but Valve doesn't accept nor even responds to any recourse

We think the ban may have been triggered during the initial Steam submission by an incomplete scene on day six, in which a man and his young daughter visit the farm. The daughter wants to ride one of the horses (in the game the “horses” are humans wearing a horse mask) and gets to pick which one. What followed was an interactive dialogue sequence where the player is leading, by a lead as if they were a horse, a naked adult woman with a young girl on her shoulders. The scene is not sexual in any way, but it is possible that the juxtaposition is what triggered the flag. We have since changed the character in the scene to be a twenty-something woman, both to avoid the juxtaposition and more importantly because the dialogue delivered in that scene, which deals with the societal structure in the world of HORSES, works much better when delivered by an older character.

“After review, we will not be able to ship your game HORSES on Steam. While we strive to ship most titles submitted to us, we found that this title features themes, imagery, or descriptions that we won’t distribute. Regardless of a developer’s intentions with their product, we will not distribute content that appears, in our judgment, to depict sexual conduct involving a minor. While every product submitted is unique, if your product features this representation—even in a subtle way that could be defined as a ‘grey area’—it will be rejected by Steam. For instance, setting your game in a high school but declaring your characters are of legal age would fall into that category and be banned. This app has been banned and cannot be reused. Re-submissions of this app, even with modifications, will not be accepted.”

So they submitted a scene that could be interpreted as an underage character in a sexual situation, then Valve banned the game, and gave no appeal even after they changed it. I know Valve is paranoid about anything even remotely involving underage characters, but there should at least be an appeals process instead of one strike and you're out.

Based on this evidence alone, and if there isn't anything else to help the workers, if I were a judge I'd rule in favor of rockstar.
It sucks and it's unfair but they dug their own grave by sharing that innocuous email, violating company policy that seemed to be in place for a while. Granted the main reason rockstar did what they did was to union bust but they have their asses covered.
Here's hoping there's more substantial evidence that can help the workers case.

I have to admit defeat I think, playing SH f on hardest puzzle is just too much for my old brain.XD Im at the one where I have to look at all those thingies hanging on gates but I am so beyond lost.
Don't worry, I can think of a couple of puzzles that are complete bullshit and can only be done by trying every combination.

Ah, yes. Surely Valve won't get in trouble for having these games on their stores however. No reason to be paranoid about it

The appeal process is either be owned by a massive Japanese conglomerate CEO of which can call Gabe directly (Chaos;Head) or atlernatively generate negative PR in the gaming press and pray that helps (Kindred Spirits on the Roof).
I see they've taken approach number 2.

Shit sucks, but given off the scene's description that's one warranted ban.
