The Trails in the Sky remake has been on my mind a lot.
These games are really special to me. At first I was worried that they'd mess it up but after watching the trailer a few times I'm confident they will get it right.
I hope it doesn't take long to come PC. The wait is going to be painful.

By the way, how did everyone hear learn English. I was just watching a video about how in Japan the English proficiency just keep dropping. People in Japan that learn English mainly seems to people individuals that like Western stuff. But because of how popular stuff like manga/anime Japanese video games and Japanese music is, there isn't really a reason for people to learn English (or at least they have less of a reason to go out of their way asides from academic/compulsory reasons to learn English.

I have heard of people in different countries learning English just from playing video games.

Asides from English, Japanese seems to be the only "major" langue that a bulk of video games are made in. You do have situations of some video games only being known as a niche Japanese series that never left Japan or something similar to that and how some Western games would reach Japan and wouldn't even release there at all.

If games like Wizardry were never released in Japanese at all in any capacity would people have gone out of their way to learn English to play the game?

Other countries in general seem to release their games in English, either that or the game industry in that country was rather small and it was hard to get their games distributed prior to Steam. But a lot of them are being released on multiple langues it seems.

Anyway that's all I have for now and happy labor day weekend for those else in the US. Enjoy your 3 day weekend, or 4 day weekend if you got Friday off.

Sesame Street was subtitled in Indonesia when I was in elementary school. That helped me learn English at an early age of 6. After that, playing pirated pc and console games helped me learn a lot of the slang and idioms, as well as American tv shows and movies. I can understand English very well, but I'm quite terrible at grammar and speaking the language.

I mostly learned English from video games, yeah. I started learning since elementary school, where I had a dictionary on my lap as I played video games. I was among the top in English throughout my junior and senior high school years and participated in a few English competitions.

I think the "problem" with Japan is how they are proud of their language, just like their neighbors China and Korea. Also, the way Japanese is constructed and pronounced kinda hinder their English too. The language lacks certain vowels and consonants (and some combination of them), if I remember correctly, so they struggle to pronounce some of the English words. Even the good English-speaking Japanese still sound off with their pronunciation at times.

The basics from school, and at some point I understood how virtually everything is written in English, so I tried to challenge myself by trying to read stuff way above my language level from an early age (around 12) until I got better and felt I could understand everything. Video games and books in English were pretty important for that, actually.

Have to say SW Outlaws is so preeeetty! For some reason I also prefer to play in the 21;9 mode with black bars. The game itself seems pretty cool, I do enjoy the open worlding even thought it doesn't have much yet, but just exploring the world is nice. I do agree that the stealth is pretty meh, especially just coming from Cyberpunk where I played a super stealthy type, really miss moving super fast while sneaking.

Hello, this is me. You needed some sort of english language understanding if you were interested in games 20/30 years ago (especially in my country). Thanks to videogames I learned everything I needed to know about which often surprised my english language teachers, the rest came out as I grew up (and kept playing games)
Also I learned history thanks to Age of Empires

I got the basics from school, and after that I learned from playing games with text in english, watching anime subtitled in english, watching tv shows and videos in english (in the case of tv shows, I watched them both voiced and subtitled in english for some time, until I could understand them well enough without needing subtitles), and through talking with others in MMOs and forums.

Big month, lots of good shit coming out:

day 1:

What the Car

Presumably day 1 if reviews are good and I have time:

Astrobot
The Plucky Squire
UFO 50
Frostpunk 2
FF16

Will be bought at some point:

Age of Mythology Retold
The Casting of Frank Stone
Space Marine 2
GoW Ragnarok
Towerborne
Wild Bastards
ARA History Untold

All on Steam except for Astrobot.

Could have considered using game pass to try out some of them, but MS increased the price for PC game pass, so fuck them, not worth it anymore.

Looking at that list of games, I once again have to wonder how many will bomb. There are just so many..

As for me, I have SW Outlaws and Alone in the Dark to play this month, and while I am somewhat interested in GoW Ragnarok and FF16, it is unlikely that I would get them this month. When you make me wait a year, do not expect me to pay a full price.

And thanks Mor :)

About 99% from videogames. Not only because it was needed to play them, and especially interact in MMOs, but also because learning English here was just... not really possible in school at the time.

First lesson was "Hello my name is", and the second was "memorize all the irregular verbs".
Completely ass backward, and I sure hope it has changed, but it explains a lot about the state of the language in the country... none of the yearly programs make sense until you reach the later years, and by this point people are either incapable of doing that much, or they've learned outside of class.

That was very different from learning Spanish, which was done properly, with voiced dialogues and long texts, that we would talk about in class while the teacher would ask questions, and where we were pushed to ask for words that we didn't understand or didn't how to say in Spanish. Actual teaching moments, instead of rote memorization before we knew how to put anything together.

And for Japan, it's worse than you think.
On one hand, the country is extremely insular and just doesn't care about the rest of the world in general (which let me tell you, causes massive problems when work is concerned in many Japanese companies... hell, look at videogame devs), so a lot of people don't really bother and then they need to catch up when travelling...

But on the other hand, the real killer, is, again, learning in school.
Not only are the multiple choice questionnaires the worst way to learn anything, but for English specifically... they're taught the language. But taught wrong on purpose.
They learn a Japanese version of English because it's "easier to pronounce", so almost every single word they learn is incorrectly pronounced (and they use even more of them in every day life, because they have tons of loan words that have replaced the old native terms!), sometimes with incorrect grammar too. Not only does it make it extremely hard to understand English speakers, it also mean when they have to actually bother learning it properly to be understood, they have potentially decades of bad habits to get rid of...

Combination of things really. School, tho I'd say the way it was taught wasn't that great (and I suspect it hasn't improved a lot*).
Games and tv shows (first with subs in Spanish, and later in English) and at some point you realize that you understand the language.

*
(Funny that you ask today, because yesterday i was at a store and they had YouTube for music and at some point an ad jumped and mentioned how the English that's taught in here and a couple of other countries (like France and Italy) in school, it's like a "fake english" that's not very useful)

Anyway that's all I have for now and happy labor day weekend for those else in the US. Enjoy your 3 day weekend, or 4 day weekend if you got Friday off.
I took english classes from elementary school, but really the main reason I can speak english is because I spent all my childhood on the web discussing and playing videogames. Other kids took those classes as well and they just didn't pick up much of the language.
I think you just have to put the time to learning a language, there are no shortcuts, unless you are some kind of language genius.

Not a lot on there for me at the moment. One or two idie games, XVI when I can get it for around £40, Space Marine 2 when I can find a decent discount. Otherwise it will be spending more time trying to clear the current Savage tier in FFXIV. and looking at stuff to clear from the backlog.

Also, as always, thanks for the excellent thread Mor

Age of Mythology and Space Marine 2 in time, and maybe if I can square my feeling about in anyway giving JK Rowling money, someday Quidditch (but not for a long while I'd think).

Like most months this year, September will be more about clearing backlog.

Here in Portugal everything on tv is subbed, which helps. Then there's mandatory English starting in 5th grade in my time (now it actually starts in elementary school) and videogames back then not being translated at all, which forced us to learn to figure things out.
Gonna spend September finishing Grandia (Saturn emulation) and Tales of Vesperia.
Finished Mad Max, it was fun, main story is shorter than I expected.
Also finished Shining Force 3 (scenario 1). Didn't buy it back in the day because they had already announced that scenarios 2 & 3 wouldn't be localized. The last fights are brutal, doing those without save states would've been a pain.

Thanks for the thread Mor
Depending on the price and reviews I may get Caravan Sandwitch

Against my better judgment, and prompted by the crpg bundle with all the dlc, I restarted Pathfinder: WotR and it's really frustrating seeing how so many systems are implemented and just how "dishonest" the game really is. I'm still enjoying myself, we'll see when I get to the part that made me quit last year, but in a way it's disheartening to see something that's so close to being great fail in such stupid ways.

By the way, how did everyone hear learn English.
In Finland we start studying a second language on 3rd grade and never stop. Most people pick English while some pick Swedish. Then on 7th grade we start the other language that we didn't start before. Then if you go to high school (I think that's more or less the equivalent) you are given more language options to start yet again, generally German, Spanish and French at least.

So anyway, most of my day to day vocabulary probably comes from school, but then of course there's the extra side dish of games, movies and internet.
It probably can't be overstated how much my vocabulary has grown due to media consumption, and how important writing on international forums and such has been, for my grammar in particular.
And understanding spoken language is obviously boosted by movies (and later also games).

For comparison all of my Swedish and German is practically gone due to lack of use. :rip:

To be honest I haven't looked if any of that school stuff has changed since it concerned me, but that's more or less it.
