I'm kind of the same. I'll read through the field guide to get some of the flavor text there but I just couldn't ever get into the story. I gave it a shot during low rank and by the time I was in high rank I was either mostly ignoring it by doing something else while the cutscene played or I would skip it.

One of these days I'm gonna have to learn a new weapon! I started out hunting with SnS, as I think almost everyone did. Then I moved on to Switchaxe eventually because it looked cool, and I played with that for a good long time until I settled on the Greastsword. I had tried it before, but I guess I couldn't quite appreciate it until I played a lot more of the game and got a better feel for its mechanics.

I've been exclusively hunting with a GS for about four games now... I considered mixing it up for World but they changed the mechanics of the weapon just enough that I wanted to learn it all over again. I don't know what it is, but GS feels synonymous to Monhun to me. The Ryu of this game, so to speak, because it works fairly well in every matchup and seems generally well balanced (aerial attack notwithstanding).

But now that I've spent so many hours with it, I'm finally considering learning a new weapon. It's hard though, because learning one properly is such a huge time investment. Doubting whether to go for Hammer, which seems to map nicely onto existing GS skills, or try out something with a more diverse skill set like Charge Blade or SnS. Hammer is also appealing because I rarely see one online.

If only I had just a single charge jewel in MHW, I'd be all over Hammer. I've got three attack jewels for god's sake. Did like a hundred runs of the Greatest Jagras event. No charge jewel :(

I guess my monhun partner decided he doesn't want to go back to PS4 (neither do I) so we're going to grind out some MHW on PC to get caught up. Having trouble deciding how I want to go about it when looking through what MHW has to offer right now orz. Thinking about going to Lance, seems like it's one of the more fun ones right now.

I've played enough monhun to know what I'm doing. I tend to aim for pretty optimized sets that focus on one weapon, then move onto another. I know in MHW that there's just generally optimized sets that work with anything though so who knows. I will say I do not like my normal favorite weapons in MHW at all, bad changes IMO, but Lance seems to be pretty much what I liked it for in the older games.

Also I completed my Heavy Bow set in MHGU:

Athena's ASS says there's only one possible way to build these skills with a single skill charm, and that charm is Heavy Up+6 OOO. Been wanting to build this for a very long time but didn't have the charm until like HR200. Super optimal and a lot of fun, if I go down to High Rank I can stunlock and kill things in just a couple minutes.

If you are new to Monhun from MHW and have a switch, I implore you to give MHGU a shot. It'll be weird going back to what is basically a PS2 game, but there's a lot of really, really cool parts of Monhun you've missed out on. I much prefer it to MHW right now, but I'm hoping that Iceborne can solve my major gripes with MHW.

Well the thing is you can make multiple sets and save everything in loadouts. Even the decorations, charms, and item wheel. I am sure you know of this.
Yup yup, but you still need to build some pretty wild mixed sets and weapons to get that far. Again, last time I was playing MHW the end game was "solved" where there was more or less just one general set that covered most everything, so I guess that's much less of a thing. I know there are some more specialized sets for certain monsters/strats, but you get most the utility you need from movesets/mantles that you can really just build damage.

I'd imagine the upside of that is you don't need to spend a bunch of time with Athena's or farming out sets that work with literally one weapon, but I'm in the habit of building TA stuff and trying to learn patterns orz.

This was straight up the best new game i played in 2018. And i didn't even play it right. (Single player)

The new expansion is supposed to be pretty big? I could really go for another big chunk of the game. Damn its so good.
