Wibblewozzer Wtf, how'd you end up with a higher score. You said you were gonna do poorly!
Three key things:
  • I remembered more than I initially thought
  • Like five hints straight up just gave the game titles because Mr Horizon was sad with how bad everyone was doing. Other hints also really simplified a few.
  • It turns out Flash games are really easy to Google for the most part.

Yeah I did better than I expected but there's definitely a huge flash gaming shaped hole in my general gaming knowledge. Aside from the few obvious ones (4 games, in my case) that jumped out into the mainstream either via the sequels like Meat Boy or otherwise like Frog Fractions, just had to google some and hope for the best. Usually I can at least pick out the entire first row at a glance, sometimes even the second row, no such luck this time. :grinning-face:

June Quiz - Arcade Games

The world's first arcade game was "Computer Space" in 1971, many titles were to follow in the same decade. Even though the "golden age" of the early 80s is long gone, arcades with old & new games can still be found in many big cities today. When was the last time you were there? :)

We're a little late starting the June round. :/ And after all the weird stuff in the Flash puzzle, we're now going back to the last millennium, and even further into the past than usual: the new quiz has a strong 80s focus, but starts already in the 70s! o_O

There is also a bonus question: Where does the Arcade Hall from the Intro Gif come from?

Deadline is Friday the 30th of June, enter via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Here is the quiz, have fun :)

A rare month where I know four of the five in the fourth row just by sight whereas most months I typically know one or two at best, but often none in the fourth row. Conversely, the third row is harder for me. Recognize and can probably find most all of that row but at a glance I think I only know one title for sure.

Should be a fun month but I personally wish it had newer games since I'm more familiar with 90s and forward arcade games.

Going to be another weaker month for me, probably. Didn't really have arcades where I'm at and never really went back to emulating stuff I missed through mame or something. Obviously I do know some stuff though, and anything that got home console ports are also going to be easier. Looking at that pics, I don't think I know anything with certainty at a glance, though I have some ideas for a bunch. We'll see.

June Quiz - Clues #1

Always the same command... Insert Coin flashes promisingly on all the old machines. Unfortunately, I don't have more to offer for this quiz than a "Participate via retrogamequiz.com", but at least it's free to play. ;) The first 25 players are already in!

Here are the first clues:

1) Game 14 is the first arcade game that could offer real-time 3D graphics with filled polygons.
2) Title 12 was regularly criticised for its exaggerated depiction of violence.
3) Number 7 is the third part of a very well-known racing game series.
4) A whole 17 (!) games in this round are from the golden 80s, three from the 90s, two each from the 70s and 2000s... and only one from the last decade.

Deadline is Friday 30 June, enter via Video Game Quiz - June - Arcade Games

June Quiz - Clues #2

Insert coin to continue... 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 ...alright, that was close! But you now have less than a week to get in the game and take the top spots from the already active 50 players. Next Friday the fun will be over and this Arcade will shut down. ;)

Here are the second and final clues:

1) In number 10 you have to collect all the dots on the screen, like Pac Man.... only this title came out a whole year earlier!
2) Game 11 is one of the first arcade games with digitised language, where you fight killer robots. Ported to Atari & Vectrex.
3) Picture 13 shows the multiplayer mode of a top down shooter where you get to control a sci-fi soldier to shoot all kinds of fantasy enemies.
4) Title 18 lets you sink submarines, but in colour...not black and white. Did you guys notice that? ^_^

Interesting! I did a count, at the moment the 4th row has indeed slightly more correct answers than the 3rd. Not by much, but looks like you are not alone. :)
Should be a fun month but I personally wish it had newer games since I'm more familiar with 90s and forward arcade games.
I felt like I owe the older users a "real" Retro quiz after the shock and despair of the Flash quiz. :smiling-face-with-halo:

For July I'll strike my usual balance again and have plenty of 90s games. :slightly-smiling-face:

June Quiz - Answers & Score

Insert Coin - 1P or 2P - Press Fire to Play! Ah yes, the good old days... but now the round is over, the arcade has closed and there is only one important high score left, which is the one at the end of this post ;)

After the (very niche) Flash Game quiz in May, more people participated again this time (125!), but the focus on the 80s was probably too far in the past for many. Next round will be more accessible, I promise. :D

Now, let's check out the answers: first the names of the games as text, then the pictures, then the high score.

1) Tempest
A classic from Atari with a very unique look.
Answer rate: 79%
Other suggestions: Asteroids, Star Wars, Battlezone, Doom, Glaxion, Styx

2) Centipede
I never liked this game... everything is so tiny and fast. :/
Answer rate: 86%
Other suggestions: Gauntlet, Snake, Space Invaders

3) 1942
This shmup classic was the easiest title of this round for you. All numbers between 1941 and 1945 gave the point. ;)
Answer rate: 91%
Other suggestions: RAID over Moscow

4) Galaga
I also let the predecessor "Galaxian" pass.
Answer rate: 84%
Other suggestions: Space Invaders, Centipede, Phoenix

5) Gauntlet
Probably the most stressful dungeon crawler of all time, your life energy doubles as your (ticking down) time limit and the enemy hordes spawn endlessly. Oh dear!
Answer rate: 74%
Other suggestions: Chaos Engine, Mercs

6) Pole Position 2
Answer rate: 74%
Other suggestions: Grand Prix, Pit Stop, Pitstop 2, F-1, F-Zero, Formula Racing, Gran Premio F1, Turbo

7) Rave Racer
The third arcade machine of the "Ridge Racer" series.
Answer rate: 48%
Other suggestions: 4x Need for Speed, Outrun, Crusin', Sega Rally, Chase HQ, Crazy Taxi, Cruis'n Exotica, Daytona, Daytona USA, Lucky & Wild

8.) Rally-X
In my boundless goodness, I also let "the mini-game from ps1 Ridge Racer" count as an answer. ;)
Answer rate: 61%
Other suggestions: Dodge em, Formula Racing, Motor Mania, Rally Speedway, Xevious

9) Slip Stream
Your answers have introduced me to many new racing games. Thank you very much!
Answer rate: 40%
Other suggestions: Final Lap (R), Super Monaco GP, Virtua Racing, Ground effects, Power Drift, F-1 Grand Prix Star II, F1, F1 Grand Prix Star, Formula Racing, Racing Simulator, Daytona USA, F1 Super Lap, Exhaust Note

10) Head-On
"Pac Man with cars" before Pac Man was even released! The original from 1979 was required here, not one of the later copies.
Answer rate: 44%
Other suggestions: Dodge em, Crash, Formula Racing, Maze Runner, New Rally X, Rally, Rolling Crash, Route 16, Space Chaser

11) Berzerk
"Chicken, fight like a robot"
Answer rate: 50%
Other suggestions: 4x Robotron, Robotron: 2084, Escape, Organ Trail

12) NARC
The figures are not hand-pixellated, but digitised real images. A very unique look, though not necessarily in a positive way.
Answer rate: 48%
Other suggestions: Mortal Kombat, Beyond Sunset, Doom, Ninja Warriors, Shadow Warriors, Time Crisis

13) Wizard of Wor
Answer rate: 30%
Other suggestions: Joust, Buck Rogers, Robotron, sky lancer

14) I, Robot
A licensed game for the Will Smith film. Or is it? ;)
Answer rate: 46%
Other suggestions: Blaster, Robotron, Scramble

15) Operation Wolf
Answer rate: 50%
Other suggestions: Metal Slug, NAM 1975, Area 51, Blaster Master, Cabal, Commando, Contra, Line of Fire

16) Arkanoid
Answer rate: 47%
Other suggestions: Crypt killer, Pang, Parodius

17) Ikari Warriors
No, not "Commando".
Answer rate: 53%
Other suggestions: 12x Commando, Rambo, Dogs of War, General Chaos, Guerilla War, James Bond, Mercs, Senjou no Okami, SNK

18.) Deep Scan
In 1977, "Depthcharge" came out, also called "Sub Hunter". But that was in dull two-tone blue/black.... What we were looking for here was SEGA's "Deep Scan" from 1979, which was in colour. ;)
Only the Atari 2600 port "Sub Scan" also gave a point. Pretty mean, huh?
Answer rate: 37%
Other suggestions: 8x Depth Charge, 6x Sea Wolf, Battleship, N-Sub, Battlestations, Destroyer, Fleet Commander, Hunter Killer, Silent Service, Submarine, Sub Hunter, Submarine Hunter, U-Boat

19) Ninja Baseball Bat Man
A wacky 2D brawler.
Answer rate: 49%
Other suggestions: Mega Baseball, Twinbats

Amidst all these action games with war, death & destruction, I found Toobin' refreshingly harmless. :)

This was actually the last arcade machine I played (this January!).
Answer rate: 37%
Other suggestions: 4x Time Crisis, Virtua Cop, Resident Evil

22) Star Castle
Answer rate: 30%
Other suggestions: Asteroids 2, Geometry Wars, Omega Race, Reactor, Sinistar, terranean, Thrust, War Castle

The only title in the "Dynamite Deka" series that is only available as an arcade machine.
Answer rate: 30%
Other suggestions: 3 count bout, Die Hard Arcade, Funky head boxers, Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, WWF Wrestlemania

24) Navarone
Answer rate: 27%
Other suggestions: Blues Journey, Magical Drop 2, Pac pirate, Polybius, Pulsar, Pulstar, Space Invaders

25) Boong-Ga Boong-Ga
A very special machine and the hardest entry of this round. "The objective is simple, ram a plastic finger up a virtual ass as hard as you can." o_O
Answer rate: 26%
Other suggestions: House of the Dead, Bemani, Bunga, Dragons Lair, hot pinball, Irritating maze, Time Crisis

---

26) Bonus question
Where does the short clip of the arcade hall from the intro gif come from? See for yourself ;)
---> link
The bonus point was not weighted, so it is the "weakest" point of this round.
Answer rate: 27%
Other suggestions: 5x Stranger Things, Terminator 2, The Wizard, Barcade, WarGames, Las Vegas, Galloping Ghost Arcade, Gremlins, Joy Stick Heroes, Leeds, Pixels, Butcheroni's Great Arcade New Orleans 1987, Studio 54, Tapper, The Last Starfighter, Back to the Future

July Quiz - Birds

After some very "gamy" topics that were focused on certain genres, platforms or times, here comes something more random & mixed - birds in video games. So here are 25 pigeons, chickens, geese, seagulls and other fowl.... do you know them all? :)

For the last two rounds of bonus questions I had hoped for some unexpected similarities among users in flash and arcade games, but unfortunately there weren't any... so now please enjoy two questions about your generation and place of residence, I promise to make a nice graph at the end of the month. ;)

Let's go! :D

Deadline is Monday 31 July, participation via Video Game Quiz - July - Birds.

Here is the quiz, have fun:

July Quiz - Clues #1

Cock-a-doodle-doo, goes the rooster - the month has only ten days left! Isn't it about time to get up and join the forty players so far?

On the user poll: So far the Millenials are in the majority, with a few Gen X players and a dash of Gen Z. Of course we only have about a quarter of the crowd in, so I'm curious how it'll look in the end. I won't say anything about the nationalities until the final post. :p

Here are the first clues:

1) Number 11 shows us a well-known DOS fps from the late 90s.
2) Three images in this round are screenshots from the Commodore Amiga.
3) Game 8 is a fun platformer with up to four players simultaneously.
4) Picture 14 shows a "swan" that is so dangerous that it is kept in a special prison.

Deadline is Monday 31 July, enter via Video Game Quiz - July - Birds

July Quiz - Clues #2

The birds are heading south very early this year.... not because of the weather, but because the round is over after this weekend ;)

Over 70 players so far, including two from this forum - so who else is joining in? Maybe Valdien Parsnip Wibblewozzer MegaApple QFNS KainXVIII xxr mssq Bufbaf Arsene or lashman ? :D

The answer rates are very balanced between 5% and 100%, and at the moment you don't even need twenty points to end up in the TOP 20.

Here are the final clues:

1) In both #15 and #17 you have to solve crimes.
2) Games #19 and #20 are both sidescroller shmups.
3) There are lots of chickens in this round, but #10 is predominantly about pigeons.
4) Title 18 is a first-person shooter from this decade.

Deadline is next Monday (31st July), enter via Video Game Quiz - July - Birds

Here's the quiz one last time :) link

Well, I think I got about 22 in the end. Just couldn't get anything googling those last 3. 24 and 25 look vaguely familiar.
Maybe it's just me but feels like google is getting worse at actually serving you results based on your actual search. It's like they are trying to be super smart but the algo just kind of sucks these days.

Maybe I should bing it!

Funny enough, youtube search is kind of garbage too. Had to be surprisingly specific to find those clips. Everything's getting worse!

Also, it's always fun to go like "I remember that game but I don't remember its name, though I remember that it's from the same dev as this other game, but I don't remember the name of that game either. But the other game had this thing that I guess I could try googling for" and then google that thing, scroll for a while and finally find the other game, and through that the quiz game.

July Quiz - Answers & Score

Alle Vögel sind schon da,
alle Vögel, alle.
Welch ein Singen, Musiziern,
Pfeifen, Zwitschern, Tiriliern!
FrĂĽhling will nun einmarschiern,
kommt mit Sang und Schalle!

(famous german children's song about birds from 1835)

A total of 130 players from twenty countries came together to correctly name all these feathered creatures... but only FOUR of them actually succeeded, which was mainly due to the very difficult number 24. ;)

But I had promised graphics for the bonus question, so now first the composition of the nationalities:

Well, what do you know, 50% Germany! How come, maybe more than half of the participating forums are in German? ;)

The countries (and players) under "Other" are as follows: Canada(4), Italy(3), Switzerland(3), Australia, Belgium, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Sweden.

And what about the generation question?

Two-thirds of you are Millenials, so somewhere between 27 and 42 years old... plus a good quarter of Gen X, a handful of Gen Z younglings and one percentage point of Baby Boomers. No matter what your age is, I'm glad you're here! :)

Kirby was super lucky for me (and I submitted on the last day) because a completely unrelated video I was watching about boss rushes posted in Discord showed that bird for like 0.5 seconds and I had a quick "Aha!" moment. Also, annoyed that I completely recognized the Street Fighter background (and I'm currently playing Street Fighter V!) but just couldn't put it together what it was from. Mentally I was considering a different direction but didn't even search for that one.

Damn it. I had a gut feeling 11 was Redneck Rampage, but didn't submit it as an answer because the colours seemed a bit off.

I was able to search Agony easily because the bird reminded me of the Psygnosis logo. Turned out to be one of their games.

Anyway, fun round! Better luck next time Parsnip :coffee-blob:

Ah, Labo VR. Not entirely sure where I've seen it, maybe a trailer somewhere. I don't think anyone that covers games in video form did anything with that either, so it must have been on a Nintendo Direct or something.
Kind of same with tiny little slug, must have seen the trailer or gameplay. Probably crossed my path somewhere because it's a new Amiga game and that's curious enough for me to check it out, but didn't really have a chance to actually remember that. Kind of surprising that the answer rate is 19%. I suppose everyone on Amiga related forums knew it. :D

Also, if anyone is curious what game my "I remember that game blah blah blah" was for, it was for Black Bird. The other game from the same dew was Dandy Dungeon, and the thing I remembered was that the main character was in his underpants/boxers. So, you know, just your average day of googling pixel art men in their undies.

August Quiz - DOS Classics #5

With some delay the new round starts - it's the fifth and last entry of the DOS Classics! :) For one last quiz you can put on those rose-tinted goggles and think back to the great PC gaming gems of the 80s and especially the 90s. Will these glasses also help you to recognise everything? We'll know at the end of the month. :p

Deadline is Thursday 31st August, enter via Video Game Quiz - August - DOS classics.

Here's the quiz, let's go:

This could potentially be a pretty good one for me. I have a fairly good idea for quite a lot at just a glance and some of the rest appear like they shouldn't be too hard to research. Well, aside from that very last one, that's going to take some doing I think.

Now that we're getting into DOS Classics titles 101-125 it's getting to stuff I have little chance of recognizing. At a quick glance I know like three or four? Considering most months I know around 10-15 just at a glance this is not going to be a good month for me.

Now that we're getting into DOS Classics titles 101-125 it's getting to stuff I have little chance of recognizing. At a quick glance I know like three or four? Considering most months I know around 10-15 just at a glance this is not going to be a good month for me.
Yeah, its tough even for me (ha!) because i'm not a big fan of space/fly/sub sims :Kain_blountsleeping:

August Quiz - Clues #1

MS-DOS WHAT NINTENDON'T!? This round unfortunately had a pretty humble start, few players (25) and low answer rates (no game reaches 80%). Oh oh!

But now there will be some clues, and as always I'll comment that it's also a chance to reach a top 20 place, at the moment you need... three points. :D

Here are the first clues:

1) Completely unintentional, but #2, #8 and #17 are all from Apogee & from the same year.
2) Number 3 is a submarine sim classic but still completely without polygons.
3) There are five classic RPGs in this round, e.g. #11, #16 and #20.
4) Game 6 was written by Roberta Williams.

August Quiz - Clues #2

Listen up everyone, the last weekend of the last MS-DOS round is on! Forty players are in so far, many of them with rather low scores... so this time you can easily get into the top 20 and make your forum proud. :p

Let's go, here are the second and final clues:

1) Number #1 shows the first part of a well-known racing game series, where you can also win a race by eliminating all opponents or running over all pedestrians.
2) Game #7 is the third part of a famous space series with a lot of gameplay freedom.
3) In #12 you plunge into air battles of the Second World War from the cockpit perspective.
4) Title #13 pits two groups of bugs against each other, the game was also ported to the Playstation in 97.

Deadline is Thursday 31st August, enter via Video Game Quiz - August - DOS classics.

Here's the quiz again, now let's go :) link

Got 19 I think.
Couldn't get anything on the last row at all despite thinking that I had some ideas what they were. In addition to those I ended up also missing #19.

I think I maybe got around 15? Didn't bother counting, skipped a bunch. Didn't really put any effort into some of them (like the last row). At a certain point I just didn't care. DOS games simply aren't my forte and there's just too many for me to want to dig through to find what game has buildings that look like dozens of others.

I expect my answer to the bonus question won't be satisfying as well, heh.

Deadline is today

After today it's all over! Everything! No more DOS Classics! Ever! o_o

So I can only advise you to take part now, even if this is one of the hardest rounds of the year. :) Okay, the "Macromedia Flash" quiz had even lower answer rates, but in the current round not a single game reaches 80%... ouch!

There are over 80 players by now, four of them from here.

freshVeggie Valdien MegaApple QFNS xxr mssq Bufbaf Arsene ...how about it? :D

Wibblewozzer - well, it was the last one. I am sure the remaining rounds will be more accessible & fun for everyone! :)

Deadline is Thursday 31 August, join via Video Game Quiz - August - DOS classics.

Here's the quiz one last time, now join.exe! link

I'm sure for many DOS games quizzes are the best and they were excited to see it. I played some PC games growing up but mostly I didn't get more heavily into them until the mid-to-late 90s and that's when I began following the PC gaming scene more. So I just have little frame of reference for many of the games. Now if you did like an NES-only quiz that's where I'd be the one cheering and I imagine half the places you'd post would be like "Can't be bothered, have ten answers and move on to the next month!"

My only computer game I really played back then is basically The Settlers (which I actually played mostly on Amiga 500), a few pnc adventure games like The Dig and Laura Bow 2, and a little bit of Syndicate on a library computer.
I read the local, more pc oriented gaming mags though so some of the more popular stuff I remember through that window.

Playing some of the actual classics that I missed from that era is something that's in my backlog, but there's just too many games to play in the end. Lately I've been thinking about playing the Indiana Jones pnc games, and also finally play the first Deus Ex, for example.
