I didn't submit any additions to my first entry, hints were either for games I already knew or which I had absolutely no clue about so. :)

March Quiz - Answers & Score

Everybody back at home, washed your hands and ready for the Corona lockdown? Great! We were exactly one hundred people (wow!), and ten from here. Given the amount of participants I guess you must have liked this round with slower and less action heavy games. :)

But some people clearly didn't get the theme of this month... who puts scary stuff like "outlast" or "five nights at Freddies" in a quiz about mainly walking simulators? ;)

Before we dive into the answers, to this first round of the year I want to welcome three new communities:

the LastGameStanding community: Monatliches Videospiele Bilderrätsel
the french PC Canard Forum: Monthly Videogame Quiz (thanks to Ruvon!)

Hey, 21, not bad :) Damn, one of the people of Canard PC forum I brought in have a better score than mine
Yes, FoxDy did pretty well. :)

Here is the local highscore for the Canard PC forum:

1 - 24 points - FoxDy
2 - 10 points - Bobby Colique

I'll let them know the results, thanks again Mr_Horizon !
Little question Mr_Horizon : How do you rank people with the same number of points ?
That's a good question! In the early years, whoever had the same number of points was just ranked by order of submission, so if you entered your 10 points a day earlier than your competitor, you got the higher of the two positions.

But now I use a different system - every game title is weighted by how often it was answered correctly. In the last round, Firewatch was guessed right 95% percent of the time, answering it earned you 1.005 points. However, Inner Space was answered right only by 23% of users, and getting that right awarded you 1.077 points. The differences are very small, and would never earn you a full additional point - but they are usually enough to make sure 7 people who all got 17 points get a distinct ranking.

Here are all people with 17 points from the current quiz, without having their results rounded:

1 - 17.569 points - Wizdom
2 - 17.545 points - j1m
3 - 17.510 points - Lukulus
4 - 17.503 points - windfisch
5 - 17.499 points - darkwave
6 - 17.487 points - Frump
7 - 17.487 points - Sachiel

You can see, with the exception of the last two it has worked out very well. :)

FoxDy was happy with the quiz and she will certainly play again ;) I'll try to get more people on board, some of them didn't submit even though they were interested in...

About the ranking : that's a perfectly clear explaination but...

Why is Frump ahead of Sachiel then ? :p

Easy, in these cases I fall back to the original method: order of submission - look at their timestamps:

3/02/2020 02:39:50 Frump
3/24/2020 18:38:29 Sachiel

I don't expect to ever have a problem here - I can't imagine a case where two users have the exact same score and also the same submission date down to the second. :D

April Quiz - Cool Cars

Be it almost the entire racing game genre, car based mini games, shootouts on wheels or just background decoration - cars are everywhere in our video game entertainment. This quiz round is all about recognising games throughout decades, genres and platforms... all just by the exterior of some car. Think you can do that? ;)

If you take a closer look at these screen fragments, you might notice there's none of the famous racing simulations around. That's because modern realistic racing games like Forza, Gran Turismo or Driveclub do unfortunately look a bit similar. Instead of those you'll get a mix of genres featuring lots of colourful cars in many different graphics styles.

Thanks to Francis W.M. we say hello to the Spazio PC community in Italy: Spazio PC :)

Deadline is Thursday the 30th of April, participate via April Quiz - Cool Cars

Here is the quiz, good luck! :)

April Quiz - Clues #1

Ignition, check mirrors, off we go - we are past the half time for this round. I'd like to post some clues for all of you, so the 33 participants (three from here) might get joined by more. :)

The car quiz is much tougher than the previous round... does the following list help?

1) Just twelve titles are racing games - barely half!
2) Several games are based on licenses from movies, comics or music: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 15, 25.
3) Number 12 is a multiplatform racing game from the last year.
4) Five screenshots show arcade versions.
5) Title 11 is an open world game.

Deadline is Thursday the 30th of April, participate via April Quiz - Cool Cars

April Quiz - Clues #2

Okay guys, watch out: please take the next exit off the highway, as this round is about to end soon! So far a convoy of 55 players has formed (four from here), but nobody managed to guess every game correctly - and just seven participants made it to twenty or more points. :)

So here is the final set of clues, good luck to all of you:

1) Just on Nintendo consoles? That's right for the 6, 7, 14 and 15.
2) The numbers 13, 19 and 23 show screenshots of games for the Commodore Amiga.
3) Game 16 and 21 make you build a vehicle from many single parts.
4) One of the games in the last row is a RPG.
5) Number 17 is a side scrolling shoot em up.

Deadline is Thursday the 30th April, please participate via April Quiz - Cool Cars

I'm guessing results must not be as strong this time around because those hints almost made things too easy, not that I'm complaining since it helped me get three or four more that I didn't have correct. I believe that left me one without an answer and the hint on that one didn't help since it now makes me uncertain what exactly I'm seeing. It'll probably be like the last quiz where it's more modern and I just don't keep up with everything so it's something completely outside of my attention and with how many games are out there these days it can feel impossible trying to search for something!

Well, good month all around. Curious to see the results!

Hi Mr_Horizon,

Just dropping by to personally give you a huge thumbs up for your work on the monthly quiz.
I first heard about it last month from Ruvon on Canard PC, and when I recognized a few games right off the bat on the April edition, I decided it was time to give it a proper go.
I never imagined I would get anywhere close to completion (or that I would end up spending so much time trying!), but here we are... hopefully. ;)

I had an absolute blast researching all those games, and I gotta say it's been a very much-needed break from all the lockdown-induced boredom.
Anxiously looking forward to the results now!

Thank you so much, keep it up.

(...) those hints almost made things too easy, (...)
There will be changes to the way I do "hints" starting next month - I will try to avoid hinting on specific games (unless answer rate is below 20% or so), and will skip hints on the bottom row completely. Have the masterminds work hard to earn that full score. ;)

Yeah, to be honest, I generally have liked the more broad hints that just note like five games are Nintendo exclusive, or this row has this genre in it, etc. For example, once I knew which numbers specifically had games from a console it makes it easy to do a search and find each title.

But I'm sure preferences vary quite a bit and I enjoy each monthly quiz so just giving my thoughts on things!

I'm probably with you on this - both sets of clues were a big help with a couple specific entries, but I did feel a tiny bit frustrated that they might be making things too easy for some of the others that I had already cracked on my own. ;)

April Quiz - Answers & Score

April is over, all cars are back in their garage - now we count some points! :) We had 93 participants and four from this community. However... THIRTEEN people have full score?? That's a lot, and I wonder if I have been to generous with my hints this year. :/ So starting next round I will put some rules on myself regarding to that:

  • never more than four clues in one post
  • less specific, more general
  • no clues at all for the last row of the quiz

I want the masterminds among you to struggle a bit if you're really after those 25 points! :D

Thank you for compiling the results so fast!

Looking back, I had only played two games from this list (n°10 and n°22), so you can imagine it was quite a journey to uncover the rest. So many cool discoveries along the way! The one I nearly lost my mind about was n°23 (Flyin' High), the screenshot's angle made it look like an isometric game so I spent ages investigating Super Skidmarks and every single related game I could find! In the end I had no burst of genius, just brute forced all Amiga racing games after your final hints.

I had a nice surprise along the way: having played n°10, I've grown quite fond of the soundtrack and I was actually listening to it while researching some games. Then I stumbled across n°6, and I thought I'd gone crazy! Turns out the same composer did both soundtracks, some 25 years apart - and remixed at least one of his old tracks in the process, as an homage to the classic game.

Thanks again, eagerly awaiting the next edition now. :)

Disco Elysium! Argh! I own and have played a little bit of it but there's no way I would have placed that car with that game. I knew it was the RPG based on the hint but for me that wasn't enough help because I wasn't sure how to interpret it. I was picturing it more like a standard open world-ish RPG where you drive around the world in car and I couldn't figure out anything that really fit that description outside of Final Fantasy XV and I knew it wasn't that.

I went from thinking this quiz was really hard but got up to around 18-20 without hints but then the hints were a bit too easy and helped me get up to the final 24 I got. Knowing that three games were Amiga it's pretty easy to search for Amiga racing games and come across those three games I had been missing. Funny enough I had actually searched Amiga racing games during my first pass because I know you tend to include games from it but I barely spent time looking before moving on.

Fun quiz, as usual. And very speedy results!

May Quiz - DOS classics #2

Everybody loves a classic - but also if it means exclusively MS-DOS games from the 80s and 90s?? For some those will be sweet memories of their childhood or youth, and for console users or those born after these games were released... well they're classics regardless. ;)

The first instalment of the "DOS classics" was the most successful quiz round of all time - so of course you're getting a part two. :) The March round was very new, this one is very retro... I am sure everybody appreciates a good balance.

Deadline is Sunday the 31st of May, participate via May Quiz - DOS classics #2

Here is the quiz:

May Quiz - Clues #1

Well, is that old DOS tower still booting properly? Or do you satisfy your nostalgia via emulators instead. ^_^ This months riddle is well received so far - forty people are in, and one from this forum.

Here are some clues - good luck! :)

1) Four games were published by EA.
2) In the 11, 13, 15 and 16 you are driving a car.
3) There is a first person shooter hidden in the second row.
4) I made a mistake with game #5, that isn't a DOS game. -_-

Deadline is Sunday the 31st of May, participate via May Quiz - DOS classics #2

May Quiz - Clues #2

Did you know? The data transfer rate of an original 90s single speed CD-ROM drive was 150 kb/sec. The disc drive of a modern Playstation 4 however reads 27000 kb/sek. :) Look at all that progress!

But let's hurry back to this months quiz... as sunday next week it'll be over. So far there are 70 people playing, and three from here.

Here are the last hints - good luck to all of you. :)

1) Two entries were developed by Bullfrog.
2) The oldest game is from 1987, the newest one from 2000.
3) Three titles were published by Microprose.
4) Image 18 shows the intro of the game.

Deadline is Sunday the 31st of May, participate via May Quiz - DOS classics #2

Submitted mainly so I don't have a break in submissions for the year-end scoring. This is not a strong period for me. I had to leave more blank spots than I normally would and many took a lot of research. Others I probably could have found with more research but since I don't really know the games of the period it would take a lot of looking and I decided this time I'd just move on.

I also found the bonus open question at the end way harder than I would have expected. Turns out I don't really have a favorite video game monster.
