I mean seriously: Italian people, with very rare, local exceptions, would never put chicken on pasta or pizza.
We actually find it super weird when we see it used so widely abroad.
Best pizza topping, you say?
It's definitely too personal.
Folks from Naples would say that the one true pizza is the margherita (mozzarella + tomato sauce), and I'd agree in a sense that it's the most basic one that all proper pizza places need to get it right.
Personally, I like it more with buffalo mozzarella (which is technically incorrect, but also fucking delicious).
There are plenty of less traditional toppings that I'd recommend, but availability may vary of course.
Salsiccia e friarielli, or salsiccia e patate (sausage and potatoes) are among my favourites, maybe because I've got a mild tomatoes intolerance, who knows.
I wouldn't disdain a pizza with 'nduja (a super spicy pork sausage from Calabria, Southern Italy), something like: tomato, mozzarella (or smoked provola), 'nduja, maybe some spicy salami, why not. This is totally not traditional though, proper folks from Naples would yell at me for this, but fuck them I'm not from Naples I can do whatever I want
