About

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will feature an authentic story set shortly after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, when the Jedi have fallen. Fans will play as a young Padawan named Cal Kestis, brought to life by Cameron Monaghan (Shameless, Gotham), who has survived Order 66, the Emperor’s secret decree to eliminate all Jedi. Players must pick up the pieces of Cal’s shattered past to complete his training and master the art of the iconic lightsaber—all while staying one step ahead of the Empire and its deadly Inquisitors.

Players will meet Cal on Bracca, a brand-new Star Wars planet and one of several new locations introduced in the game. Cal is hiding from the Empire in plain sight but is forced to go on the run when he exposes his Force powers. Along the way, Cal will make new friends, like his mysterious companion Cere, as well as run into some familiar faces, all while being accompanied by his faithful droid BD-1. Cal’s flight from the Empire is made even more dangerous as he is being pursued by the Second Sister, one of the Empire’s elite Inquisitors, who seeks to hunt Cal down and extinguish this surviving Jedi. Assisting the Second Sister are the terrifying Purge Troopers, special Imperial forces trained to seek out Jedi and aid the Inquisitors in their dastardly work.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is designed with gameplay as a top priority in order to deliver the kind of intense Star Wars lightsaber battles that are seen in the films. Brought to life by Respawn, a studio known for high-quality games that are both visually beautiful and technically masterful, players will use their Jedi training to create different melee combinations with an innovative lightsaber combat system and Force abilities. Players will also use traversal and other platforming abilities to strategically overcome opponents and solve puzzles in their path across this galaxy-spanning adventure. Star Wars fans will recognize iconic locations, weapons, gear, and enemies, while also meeting a roster of fresh characters, locations, creatures, droids and adversaries new to Star Wars.

Staff Comments

Stig Asmussen – Game Director, Respawn Entertainment

“Many Star Wars fans, ourselves included, are really interested in the dark times, so we wanted to explore that mysterious, dangerous period. The team at Lucasfilm have been amazing collaborators, helping us explore and further develop this part of the timeline where the Empire is at the height of its power and any remaining Jedi are in hiding. Within this narrative, we’ve crafted a game with intense, yet thoughtful and fun melee combat using the lightsaber and Force powers, allowing anyone to fulfill their Jedi fantasy.”

Steve Blank – Director of Franchise Content and Strategy, Lucasfilm

“When Respawn approached us with the idea for this game, we were immediately supportive. A single player, story-driven title in the Star Wars universe was exactly what we were looking for, and we know the fans have been eager for one, as well. Focusing on Cal stepping back into the shoes of a Jedi post Order 66 opens up a lot of gameplay opportunities and rich story threads to develop for this new character and his backstory.”

Mt. Whatever
Ah, didn't see we had a thread here for it.

No character creator in Fallen Order = No buy for me. 😬

It's fine if they wanna feature one dude for marketing like Mass Effect and MaleShep, but please let me make my own... please? 🙏
So that^. But also yes, the trailer was quite uninspiring. I did really like Titanfall 2, I hope they carry some of that same innovation into this.

Yeah but I’m still optimistic because Respawn are behind it. Need that gameplay though
they're probably saving gameplay for whatever they'll be doing around E3 (since they're not directly at E3 this year)

I completely trust Respawn to not mess this up, but the trailer was bland in terms of flair.
The villain looks great, as long they do not introduce the Attack helicopter lightsabers

That looked incredibly standard. Like any one of the recent cinematic adventure games of the past decade, just pretty looking and Star Wars-ish.

Jedi's Creed starring Ian Gallagher? Looked boilerplate as could be for a game involving lightsaber battles/Star Wars.

I think it looks fun, but I like Star Wars and don't play many games like this.

That looks like it has potential. Good traversal skills and promising melee combat. As long as the level/action/boss design ramp things up of course. Casual mode Sekiro Wars maybe. Hopefully the story and scripted sequences don't keep getting in the way of actual gameplay. Every other room had some event to sit back and watch through before going on your way it seemed. I get you can ignore it but that felt forced even with this limited demo so hopefully it lets up.

It doesn’t even have the hook that Assassin’s Creed or other third-person games have.
  • Uncharted: More or less Indiana Jones, pulp adventure movie simulator.
  • Assassin’s Creed: Stealth gameplay enveloped within painstakingly made historical recreations.
  • Batman/Spider-Man: Fluid superhero combat.
  • Souls/Nioh/Sekiro/etc: Challenging combat and atmospheric storytelling
I dunno so far it looks like they took pieces of all of those, but didn’t create their own angle. Even the Star Wars part itself seems bland and uninteresting so far.

Hopefully future showings are better, because right now it looks like a Redbox rental.

I mean, watching bits and pieces of Titanfall 2's campaign it looks like any other FPS but they made something fun. It had similar traversal skills (though wall running and shit was cooler in FPV while in third person I guess it's more common, yet if it feels good it's good). So it's all up to the level design and how it ramps up and the encounter design and how that ramps up to make you use your traversal and combat skills in challenging and fun ways while going through interesting environments and the odd cool set piece. It doesn't look like it has Sekiro levels of skillful swordplay but that's the latest and greatest, great games that aren't on its level aren't suddenly all bad now (like Souls games and Nioh 1) and it certainly looks like a far more involved system than is commonly seen. Like, even in the fabled Jedi Knight games it was pretty clumsy. It looks proper here. It could still be shit or forgettable like Force Unleashed, just saying.

The Lightsaber behaves like a training foam bat. This is one of the most awesome and dangerous weapons in fictional culture.
Enemies are brushing it off like it is nothing. It's a game so enemies need to take several hits, I get that. But there is no impact, no destruction, no cut limbs, hit reactions aren't great. LS combat is like a beautiful ballet of destruction. This is somebody swinging a foam bat, in slow motion

Most enemies seemed to be one hit kills to me except that mini boss dude. It did seem weird when he got hit and didn't die like the troopers did, I guess they maybe need to give him some dodge/deflect/parry animation for when he gets hit but it's not enough to kill him, same for whoever doesn't take one hit. The insects I guess it didn't look as wrong there given their size but they could do with more visible damage for sure. Still, regular swords tend to just take one clean hit to kill most things too but we're used to slicing through people or at least bosses until their health bar depletes or they're open for a finisher just the same.

Oh and it wasn't the best play, getting stunlocked by the guy even tho it was clear there were dodge and such evasive moves to use, which he barely did, so I'm sure it can look cooler when playing well and dealing with enemies who have weapons that can stand up to a lightsaber, especially other lightsabers. Although I feel the days of elaborate ballet choreography are past Star Wars even for the movies (and they were only so for the meh Episodes 1-3 really).

Maybe it can look cooler, maybe not. We can only judge what was shown. This is an EA game, this could very well be representative of the state of the game. It will maybe even release exactly as is, or be somehow worse.
It doesn't matter if most enemies died in one hit or five. I'm talking about the flow of animations, interactions between attacks and hits, "weight".
Take a look at the axe in God of war or the katana in sekiro. There is a certain power behind there, enemies take several hits there too and you still feel the impact and damage your weapons do.

I'm not talking about cooler animations not seen in the video either, though you probably unlock moves and shit as you go given the xp system and the whole force thing which is ripe for aquiring new skills as you play. Just that the player clearly didn't make proper use of dodge and sidesteps and stuff that were visible in other points when fighting that mini boss which made it look clumsier just as it looks clumsier than it can if I don't play Sekiro well (like I usually didn't, lol). It just seems obvious to me they've at least tried to develop a proper combat system rather than have it be something way too simplistic and meh like Force Unleashed's. Or like most western games with melee weapons for that matter, even if nu-God of War and a few others have bucked the trend.

You said enemies brushed it off, that's why I said most died in 1 hit. I didn't find much wrong with the animation quality but hey, whatever.

One problem with greater graphical fidelity is that the better the visuals get, the more noticeable it becomes when dismemberment isn’t always applied.

It’s really weird that they cancelled Star Wars 1313 (Star Wars Uncharted) to make Amy Henning’s game (Star Wars Uncharted) and cancelled that to make...Star Wars Uncharted. Again.

I would just go all out and say as the fidelity goes up overall, its all the little shortcuts that stick out more.

Almost certainly it's a time constraint thing and not a tech thing, because the Quake3 engine could handle lightsaber dismemberment to a pretty good degree. Hell, even the Jedi Knight engine could handle it when modded.

I don't think it's a matter of tech. They almost certainly weren't allowed to put dismemberment in, either because Disney wants the game to have as low an age rating as possible, or because they specifically wanted this trailer to be shown on YouTube without an age gate.

I'm in the camp of the underwhelmed people. It's hard to articulate what was wrong in particular :
  • Level design couldn't be more linear
  • Nothing about the location, story or the way it's all portrayed made me drawn to it. It doesn't have any of the star wars-appeal to the imagination
  • The lightsaber is wrong. Core should be pure white. Sound when turning it off should have more oomph.
  • More of Disney's bland cast of characters. Making characters appear everywhere isn't the same thing as lending them depth.
  • I get that they wanted to showcase many different moves and make the demo interesting but I can't help worry that this character is a little too powerful for the lore. I hope we at least get the Training Montage to go with it.
The combat moves seem like they could really be good and interesting if the game let you play around the way Jedi Outcast did.

Anyway, it feels like a star wars game should have at least captured a bit of the magic and been a lot more exciting than that.

What confuses me is why so many want Fallen Order to be an RPG

Like, I get it, I love KoTOR too, but I'm appreciative to see Respawn playing to their strengths here.

The GI article says the map design is much more open, but they sure did a bad job showing that.

To the above, I don't think the sentiment is overwhelmingly that it should have been an RPG. The only thing probably strengthening that crowd is how blasé this main character is. If you're going to have someone so bland, might as well let people customize your bland character.

I feel the biggest weakness with this gameplay reveal is that it doesn't do anything particularly "wow". It's... okay. The game comes across as something like TimeShift but with a lightsaber. And that's not necessarily bad, but you're basically watching 10-15 minutes of someone walking down a conspicuously linear corridor occasionally pressing a button to stop fan blades spinning or to push something over to make a bridge. The combat looks... okay? It's very console-y lock on combat with movement that seems oriented around lock-on. I'm wondering how it'll play with a M+KB. The classic Star Wars games had very fast lightsaber combat with a high level of mobility. Shit got crazy as you leapt around huge spaces trying to take down a single Sith warrior while dodging fire from stormtroopers. This comes across as "stand there, wait for them to attack, parry" or whatever.

Show us the allegedly Metroid-esque level design and stuff like that. This seems like a rather middling area of the game for a demo designed to make the game look really cool.

And instead of looking cool it rather looks a bit archaic. It's okay to copy things from other games, but a SW game with LS combat needs a twist, something that makes it stand out.
Main character didn't stand out, traversal and level design invoked strong "been there, done that" feelings, seeing rogue one characters did nothing for me, combat was okay at best, but not exciting or interesting.
I love Star Wars and I'm waiting for a new single player AAA game now for an eternity but this didn't convince me at all. I actually wish EA would move the release to next year to give the talented people at respawn more time.

Yeah, there wasn't really anything here to grab me. It always surprises me how in a medium where you can do literally anything, there is so rarely any sense of imagination or wonder. It didn't sound like this game was focus tested at all and that EA isn't interfering, so maybe the demo just didn't capture that. I'm also kind of surprised they showed the game at all, considering how unpolished it looked. I really like Respawn, though, so staying cautiously optimistic.

STAR WARS JEDI: FALLEN ORDER™ - LETTER FROM STIG
A note from our Game Director, Stig Asmussen

Revealing gameplay is always a little nerve-wracking, even more so when considering our goal of delivering 25 minutes of hands-on footage, not to mention the little point that this is the latest Star Wars™ game;).
In scope and expectations, this is by far the biggest E3 demo I have ever worked on.
Looking back a week later, the response has been amazing and informative. We are incredibly humbled by your support and are dedicated (more than ever), to make this game as great as it can be!

We spent months going back and forth discussing the best strategy to release this content, and ultimately decided for the first-look, it was critical to present a focused 15 minutes of raw, in-game footage highlighting lightsaber gameplay that speaks to the Jedi fantasy in an empowering way. But it should not be mistaken that our combat is overpowered or easy. I promise there is considerable challenge and depth to be found within our combat system. The same can be said about our approach to level design, which is crafted in a non-linear way with heavy influences from games like Metroid, Castlevania, and the Souls series. The game will feature several planets that the player can elect to travel to via starship. On these worlds unique abilities and upgrades can be found that open up new paths across other planets, making retraversal an essential part of the gameplay experience. This is a lot to describe in 15 minutes of gameplay. Getting hands on the full 25 minute experience is best to completely understand it.
With that said, we invited some press to play the game at E3, offering hands on for the full 25 minute demo. Here are some of their impressions: The Verge, Game Informer, GameSpot, IGN. From these previews, I think it’s safe to say that the game isn’t as easy as it looks and our thoughts internally about the game “feeling good” are closer to being validated. But we are not done yet, and are continually play testing to ensure the game challenges even the most skilled player, while not alienating those who want to take a more casual approach. And, maybe most importantly, we also want to make sure that the game is delivering on the core promise of becoming a Jedi.
Last but not least, we would like to share the full demo video with all of you. The top of the demo showcases a hand-crafted sequence we refer to internally as a Star Wars™ moment. Midway through look out for a small peek into our planet hopping system, an example of an upgrade/acquire, as well as our Metroid inspired map (in action). We sincerely hope you enjoy!

We’re excited to enter the final stage of game development: shipping this game. There is no doubt a lot of work ahead of us, but I have a ton of confidence in our team. We’ve only shown a fraction of the game, and we’re looking forward to sharing more in the coming months.
And on behalf of everyone on the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order team, thanks!
