picked this back up lately after dropping it a third of the way or so into chapter 2 for a couple months(due in large part to Path of Exile pretty much killing off my interest in everything else for a month or so when it finally got a currency trading thing)

near the end of chapter 2 now and feeling mostly back into it but one thing i've really been noticing lately is the total absence of any minigames this time around, not even having fishing let alone other stuff really just makes it feel like somethings missing and makes me notice just how important that sort of stuff feels for breaking up the npc talking(which I like doing but does take a lot of time when you want to talk to everyone whenever they have new lines)

The fishing minigame at least comes back in Daybreak 2. A crying shame they left it out of this one . :blobclosecry:

I think they just ran out of time when making Daybreak (as the first game on their new engine). I'd expect the number of minigames to inrease again as the (sub-)series progresses.

One reason Reverie can have so many minigames is that it's basically the 5th game on an established software stack, and the 3rd at the same asset level. (That said, I think Reverie might have the largest volume of minigames of any JRPG [or RPG in general] ever, if you define "volume" as quantity x depth -- any contenders?)

the Yakuza series comes to mind(not that i'd call most of them JRPGs/RPGs but the two turn based ones added a bunch of RPG elements and definitely are)

and yeah Reverie being the most recent game I played in the franchise before this is definitely helping make the total lack of minigames here feel a lot more jarring

finished chapter 2 earlier and
it was a bit disappointing to not see Richard at all since IIRC he's supposed to be based in the eastern quarter, it was nice to see the characters from the gambler jack books though even if on the topic of minigames that kept crying out for a gambling minigame of some sort[/spoilers]

finished chapter 3

bit of an underwhelming chapter plotwise but feeling hooked on the game itself at this point, basing the film festival in essentially fantasy dubai felt like a fun choice that the series hasn't really done before and i'm liking the party at this point even if a few of their quirks like Aaron calling Van old or Feri not understanding things do feel a bit overused at times, Risette doesn't really feel like a character yet though need to see more there
the execution was pretty underwhelming but I did also think the setup for that hookah thing was fun, the mask thing from reverie repeating as the chapters big reveal felt pretty anticlimactic though and the desert field area was kinda boring
I also feel like the sidequests in this game are perhaps the most interesting in the series to date

Into Chapter 5 now. Time to complain about an annoying trope in Trails games.
Forced replays because of splitting paths.

I dunno how impactful these path splits are going to be, but just like in the Cold Steel games, having to play though multiple times to see the bonding events-- this is somehow more annoying because its going to make me replay large parts of this chapter but with probably not a ton of variation. I'll have to bust out Cheat engine for the others cause who's got time to see all of that through normally? LOL.

Liking where the story is going, but I understand what people are saying about the probable rushed development. Lots going on that feels very rushed here.

finished chapter 3
Almata trying to replicate the incident in Crossbell is the intended purpose, but at the same time, the resolution in Daybreak was kind of clumsy compared how the event played out in Reverie. It's not the fault of the two sisters either since I think they are great characters.

Sadly there's not enough incentive to NG+ apart from collecting achievement. There will be a slight change during the events of Finale chapter depending on your LGC alignment, but the reward from it is almost inconsequential since the game can be completed without difficulty either way.

Into the finale now. Liking the crew more and more as it goes.

Of course the last chapter didn't wrap everything up they have more games to make, but I did wish we got a little more about Dantes and Melchior's uh... whatever they had. And it seems clear the finale will focus on Van, Elaine and Rene. I'm ready for it tho. Let's go
