I'm thinking about getting one of these. Main reasons are:
1. testimonials where people say they have been playing way more games than they would without it
2. ???
I don't have a real use case for needing a handheld system specifically. But I do have a big backlog and games I love that I'd like to play again, and so on. If the form factor of the Deck helps me play more, it would be worth it. So, for those who play more on the Deck, why? What makes it more motivating/enjoyable to play on the Deck than to use your desktop? I really like builder and factory games, but it seems like not having the big desktop monitor for those kinds of games might not be ideal? Also, a large proportion of my game library is unsupported (Dark Souls, really?). But enough of it is Verified/Playable, and I don't mind tinkering.
I'm concerned about its size. I have a Switch for Nintendo exclusives, and If just hold it with the joycons and play, I'm guaranteed to get wrist pain. So, I use my favorite old 8bitdo SN30 controller with it. I also use a small fold-out stand for the Switch, so I don't have to balance it awkwardly on whatever's available. So I'd probably like to play the Deck like this as well. If it doesn't fit in the Switch stand, I guess I could get the dock?

Pros with the deck:
Cons:
- Literally play anywhere, In the sofa, in your bed etc
- The Deck is relatively small (as compared to taking a laptop to the above mentioned places)
- The Deck boots really quickly compared to other computers, so you don't spend as much time fiddling around,
- Also, there's a sleep mode (that I personally don't bother much with, since it boots so quickly)
- Often (at least for Verified of Playable games), the controls are adapted to the Deck to feel comfortable
- If they aren't, make your own controller configs to make it play exactly how you want!
- A lot of games are totally playable on the Deck, even if they haven't received their rating yet.
Cons:
- Battery time can be low for AAA games (sub 2 hours at worst I believe)
- But at the same time, if you turn down the graphical settings, you can often squeeze out a few hours more on the same games
- And on that "small" screen, graphical quality is not necessarily the thing you want to maximize.
- Tinkering with game settings and Deck settings is required for the step above
- But not necessary for all games
- And you quickly learn what to do, to get games to play how you want them to.
- Mouse heavy games that require quick reaction times (for example RTS) might be a bit hard to play on the Deck.
Reliable sleep mode is a game changer for PC games. I would not be able to finish any jRPG without it.
People playing more games probably has to do with the sleep feature mentioned in Momo's post, I mean you can alt-tab and stuff on PC too but kinda not really the same if you have to use your PC for work, or need to do something else, AAA games generally have a lot of cutscenes and other junk, you can just put it on sleep in the middle of them instead of having to wait, and can do them later, so there's the feeling that you need less commitment playing on the deck and can just pick it up whenever.
Other things include the thing having a small screen makes you care less about image quality because you just can't really see these things compared to a giant display where low res textures or whatever stick out like a sore thumb, but games also look great on a small screen at the same time because of that, so people find more appreciations with older games as well.
All in all, Steam deck is kind of just a computer but in handheld form, so it comes with all the technical hurdles of a PC and depends largely on what you think about handheld and how much you prefer to play on a desktop, but it's much better to hold on your hands than a switch so there's that (it's also bigger).
One more thing is that while this thing is a Linux machine that you need some technical knowledge to get the most out of, the community does a good job making some of the stuff much more accessible than on Windows, for example installing emulators is incredibly easy (outside of knowing how to get the bios you needed for these things) where people came up with softwares that automate most of the progress for you, I'm just now going back to playing Metroid Prime I never got to because I no longer want to hook up my old consoles, nor want to go set things up on my PC, but it's pretty easy on the Deck and the Steam Deck controls are great.
I work from home and sit at my desktop hours a day. The Deck is good for me since the idea of sitting at my desk even more is annoying (and one reason why I steered back into console gaming the past few years). I also have a massive library of console-like games on my Steam account (platformers, JRPGs, etc) that I am not too interested in playing at the desk, but enjoy a lot on Deck. I'm probably a niche case, but the Steam Deck fits my niche perfectly. If Valve makes a Steam Controller 2.0, I would probably look into getting a mini PC with SteamOS so I could have a Steam Console.
Yeah, emulation is a big draw, too. I could potentially just get rid of my Switch. I like the simplicity of consoles and comfy couch gaming, but I completely stopped buying any 3rd party games on consoles years ago -- it's just not worth losing them over time due to backward compatibility. And even if there's compatibility, who wants all these old devices laying around? What a pain in the ass. So Deck may also bridge that gap.
I sure wish it were possible to audition this thing in person, but it sounds like the huge size of it is fine. I like that it's so customizable in terms of controls, but maybe that means my little bluetooth controller won't work quite as well with a Deck.

You will start using this extensively once you get children, believe me.
Already have one, and I pretty much only use the Deck when my child sleeps.
Well, my 512GB is ordered. It was lashman's gib reaction that really put me over the edge tbh.
Honestly the controller part of Steam Deck is actually a selling point, I use the kick stand on the Switch because a pro controller is better, but for Deck I just use the steam deck controller instead.

hmm .. so esterday i heard some weird sound inside it .
so i went to check and opened it .
Found out the rubber bit and its "shield" (for right top backbutton) were loose
so i tried to put it back to its place ... but its not really clicking and the R4 doesnt work anymore

i just contacted the support for RMA (for the nonworking r4)

I dont really use the button so its not problem with my decking at all , but iw ill be busy in next few weeks aynway and still got Win3 for my handheld needs so not that much of an issue to be without it for some time
=> so better safe than sorry , especially when my warranty runs out in march.

I was wondering why I was getting such bad battery life on Persona 3 so I checked my TDP.
I completely forgot I set it to 10 to make Persona 5 run at stable 60fps heh.
Now setting it down to 4 or 5 makes P3 run like butter. Basically 6+hrs of battey life

Anyone having loud trackpad haptics sometimes? My right side trackpad gets a rattle, but only when playing certain games. When I'm in desktop mode or testing the trackpad haptics, it's fine (strength set to 4). Why would the haptics get much stronger while in game, to the point of rattling, and then only one trackpad? Not considering submitting a ticket for this, since it's not a huge deal, just wondering. I've seen a couple of threads on steam community about rattling trackpads, but those cases seem much worse than mine and happen outside of games, too.

Yea I know but I just keep it a default. I mostly play indies, long jrpgs or old games that don't really need tweaking. But I played P5R for over 150hrs over the past 3 months so I just tuned out and never even messed with any of the system settings lol.

smaller but bulkier, deck is pretty damn lean outside o the side controlls
The whole Trine series looks absolutely beautiful! Bit of a shame the story of Trine 3 remains unfinished – and that game was a bit of a missed opportunity anyway... they couldve made a fantastic 3D platformer but the fixed camera they had really limited it.
I would argue the art direction in those games was never underrated tho, I think it was always praised–rightfully so
I haven't looked through the admittedly 40 pages of content of this thread yet because I had to originally cancel my original pre-order of a steam deck but I just got one for my birthday because of my family and I just wanted to throw out that I'm surprised by the amount of old games I have in my library that are fully verified on the steam deck.

Finished Little Noah, was a fun game, not as long / dynamic as something like Hades but still gave me like 10hours of entertainment, there are other modes that unlocked but not really going to do them. It's a game that's fun to pick up and play and can resume midway through on the deck without quitting the game.
Don't hesitate to try any not verified games. I can count the games I could not get running on one hand.
That is a nice setup. I'm heading to Japan soon and was looking for portable monitors and came across these https://www.nreal.ai/air/ (can't get any more portable than glasses). I've been spending most of my time playing while wearing these and it's nice. Also I prefer the displays on the glasses (turns out is is an OLED display) to the steam deck display.
It does require a messy setup if you want to run it while charging the Deck.
Pretty excited to try my setup on the plane.

I played the Forspoken demo for about 15 minutes. I'm no Digital Foundry, but here are a few thoughts off the top of my head:
-Defaults at low settings. Looks kind of ugly, but it is what it is.
-Runs at an inconsistent 30 FPS. There are plenty of frame rate drops when in combat. I think part of it might be shader compilation issues though? I was getting dips into the single digits during the first few minutes, but it smoothed out and I was "only" getting dips into the low-mid 20s by the time I stopped
-Battery life is between 90 minutes and 2 hours, depending on how much is happening on screen
-The fan was going crazy at the title screen, but calmed down during gameplay. It picks up during the intense scenes though.
I don't think it is a game I would play on Deck, but the fact it runs at all, and in a fairly playable state, is impressive.

Is there a way to force a lock to max of 30fps? Fans going crazy at the menu to me says it's running uncapped at that point.
There is an in game option to limit FPS at 30, but I guess it doesn't work at the title screen.
That's great news. It's the one Ubisoft game I actually want to play on the Deck.
Hi-Fi Rush supposedly runs fine on the Deck. I bought it.
