For a cozy game I could suggest My Time At Portia. You come to this Island, where you inherit your father's workshop and pass your days building things, exploring caves, killing some monsters, mining and collecting various resources, talking to the other citizens, helping them out, etc...
Very relaxing game.
Portia is a really good pull. I fell head over heels for it around this time last year. It's SUPER cozy & feel good. With nice pacing that guides you up through the ranks from beginner to master craftsman through a string of story quests. Loves the art design and soft, watercolor presentation. Soundtrack is ace too.

On a related note, if you're feeling like moneybags, you could always go for Dragon Quest Builders 2. Shares a lot of the same pros as Portia but also features a full-fledged rpg-lite story with tons of cute dialogue banter and questing. One of my surprise hits of last year.

- There's always Stardew Valley, as long as you focus on making the farm aesthetically cool instead of trying to relentlessly upgrade and make money. Be just productive enough. That's the fun way to play. The other way is just hectic and stressful. Just like in real life.
Great tip on game-flow management. I need to remind myself of this often as well when playing these types of games. The urge to optimize is a decent impulse when thinking strategically, but taken to extremes it can quickly suck all the fun out of the game when you become OCD about it.

Along the lines of Stardew (since so many seem to already own it), there's also Graveyard Keeper. The best Stardew-like I've seen so far that has a twisted take that's more charmingly Burtonesque than outright dark. Really meaty campaign too.

Thanks to the person who mentioned Pikuniku reminded them of Wuppo. What a charming adventure that was.
I think I might have a sweet spot for games that reminds me of An Untitled Story. That game truly was something special at least for me when Matt originally released it.

In other news, I gotta say that I'm a HUGE fan of Steam's recent What's New banner.

I'm not sure what dark-magic they have running the algorithm, but for someone who's only actually played like half the games they own on Steam, the update feed seems to only populate with recently played or titles that I've put significant hours into (installed or uninstalled).

So it ends up feeling clutter & spam-free while hipping me to new & interesting developments with recent faves or old-time classics. It's great for engagement when I see a title that I may not have played in a while has gotten a cool content update.

Makes my entire Library feel more living and dynamic as I can see a collection of recent activity at a simple glance whenever I open my Library home page.

New Concurrent Players Record

Really impressive. Just shows even tho PUBG has fallen back down to earth over the past 2 years...the rest of Steam continued to grow in a healthy way.

Also CSGO is such a beast. I wonder how long Valve will take before releasing a new next gen Counter Strike from the ground up. They always do it with when a new Half-Life game comes out so its gonna be time soon. Wouldn't be surprised if it happens before the end of the year. Imagine those graphics and animations from the Alyx trailer in a new CS game :D

I hope this is the year that steam gets my currency in its store, its no excuse that Epic, Origin and even fucking Uplay has the correct pricing but not Steam
DO NOT HOPE FOR THAT
You will lose access to a good chunk of games on the store, permanently. Polish złoty was added in 2017 and a good 10-20% of games still haven't bothered to add regional pricing for that currency batch, rendering them unpurchasable.

I finished Kathy Rain, it was great. I gave up on Kentucky Route Zero during the second episode, it's not great.
Yeah I have to admit that I thought of KR0 as fairly typical arthouse fare; I just found it rather weird and confusing more than anything else (particularly with the huge gaps between episodes not helping that) while everyone else around has called it genius and a marvel.

I saw a mutual of mine on Twitter talk about finishing Labyrinth of Refrain, and I want to replay it. It's a shame that so few people seem to actually know about the game, let alone have played it. It's easily in the top 5 games that NIS have made, IMO.

I really need to start my Switch copy

I've heard nothing but great things about this game and how it's one of the best NISA localizations. It's definitely on my radar once February slows down a bit and i can find it on sale.

I think I might tackle some horror games next from my list. Currently looking to play Distraint 2 and Song of Horror. Any other recent horror games I should look into to?

I really love the direction 4A Games took with Metro Exodus. I assume open-world Metro would essentially be Stalker, but this feels very different. Each region feels very different, both in atmosphere and gameplay. The Volga level was probably the closest to Stalker, with slow, methodical exploration and a dangerous environment with weird supernatural dangers.
The Caspian Sea region is basically Mad Max.

Sand, jury-rigged cars, a slave-cult and bandits. And you get to drive around in a car, shame it's just a van, though

Definitely the best Metro game already, and judging by the story, I still have at least another big region to go.

I have the game for N/S (I have the CE from NISA actually) but I just never got around to playing it. I heard that there is a sequel in the works. Also don't the PC version have some issues in the later parts of the game that break the game?

Labyrinth of Refrain is great, loved it:

Is that what the game looks like on GOG 2.0?

Seeing how CS:GO is now free to play, and how Valve has changed some of the steam community market stuff for the game, a new game may come out in the next 5 years ? The changes make it so that the economy of CSGO has been hit. For TF2 the only thing keeping that game going is the economy and that one bug last year almost ended the game. So TF2 mainly just has the economy, while CSGO had both an economy and esports.

It seems one of the main driving forces behind CSGO right now is esports. Even after all of these years it's still a tier 1 epsort, along with Dota2 even though it seems like Valve cares way more about Dota 2 than they do about CS:GO (examples include, CS:GO still running on Source 1 instead of Source 2 like DOTa2, Dota2 has a huge prize pool while the CSGO one is a lot smaller, the frequency of new content and patches).

They recently seem to be showing it a bit more care but that could just be them trying to get the most amount of money that they can from it before they release the next CS game.

When they release a new CS game that will take some time to take the place of CS:GO, and it was the esports scene that ended up helping CSGO take off, seeing how people still preferred 1.6 over CSGO at the time of launch.

Things are different now and there are other Tier 1 and Tier 2 FPS esports game so the new CS would have to compete against those games. Seeing how the PS4 and Xbox one now support KB+M, and how the PS5 and XBSX will also have that and crossplay with PC. So will the next Valve titles on consoles end up being a CS game? There is still the issues of how often updates are pushed out though.

OT but this is a fun watch. Don't let yourself be had by the title, it's not what you think.
It's more about Ninty waiting until trends crystallize to later adopt them into their own franchises.

I mean Switch already dabbled in VR more than Xbox did (and really, who has seen people play Beat Saber and not instantly think Wii?) and Souls owes a lot to Zelda lock-on battle systems and temples if not Metroid progression. They've supported non-gameplay games much like walking sims just offer experiences (is animal crossing an experience?) rather than puzzles or action too (but walking sims are light adventure games and their platforms had their share, mostly from third parties, from Another Code to Ace Attorney and Professor Layton). What's daddification and who thinks we need more Battle Royale? Fortnite is on Switch, why does Nintendo need to make a less popular one to not be behind? Not watching clickbait shit, demand better, just going by your hidden explanation.

The best thing they can do with a new CS game is add some type of new game mode for it. So that its not competing too directly with CSGO. Both will be able to coexist for a long time that way.

Some type of new Battle Royale mode or maybe do some VR thing with it. It would really make sense for them to do a multiplayer VR game as more people continue buying headsets.

With both Portal VR and L4D VR being officially deconfirmed now I think their 3 VR games will wind up being...

1) Alyx
2) Counter Strike VR
3) In the Valley of Gods

They arent making CS:VR until the VR population is big enough to handle something like that. That is something they talked about with HL:A. My guess for the next games are:
-L4D3 (this doesnt require that much of a population).
-A weird new IP.

With a new HL and CS (with a VR mode, but not exclusive to it, similar to L4D3) coming later.

I had been thinking about that lately. I'm eager to see what Metroid Prime 4 will be like now that everyone does metroid better than metroid. What is that game going to be like in a world that has Dark Souls, Hollow Knight, Prey, Ori, etc. I secretly hope it's a metroid themed kart racer instead.
