We will probably see similar posts form indie developers when they find out a year later that their game didn't get any traction and Epic isn't giving them another moneyhat. Suddenly they will need those pesky customers they treated like shit :p

Of course, when releasing and unknown game without any buzz a year later still somehow doesn't result in success, they will blame everyone else again....

looking forward to the upcoming nathan greyson thinkpiece on how gamer harrassment pushed AOne games into a business direction they didn't want to take.
I seriously wouldn't rule it out.

I thought there is a sales guarantee from Epic?
For a certain amount of copies. This means that the game has to sell above that amount in order for the developers to start receiving more money. I would imagine that a lot of indie developers on EGS are stuck in a situation where they're not making any money for a whole year as they wait for the amount of copies they presold to Epic to be depleted.

that's pretty much it, yes

and i imagine at least a few of them went like "oh, we have all that money right now ... let's spend it on hiring more people and making the game/our next game better" ... and then they realized barely anyone is buying their game on egs, and are facing an entire year without any additional money from sales, and they already spent most (if not all) of the moneyhat ... and are extremely screwed

which kinda makes me sad tbh

It is sad. Hopefully they'll make better decisions next time.

I would honestly feel a bit more "sad" if this was a team that wasn't actively mocking and antagonizing people.

Like I keep saying: there's plenty of indie developers who aren't pulling crap like this, and don't get an inch of the exposure some of these developers get, while doing everything "right" in terms of customer support and interaction.

I prefer to reward and support back those people, instead of a company like AOne Games.

Im really curious to how Blands 3 will do on Steam, should release between march 13th to april 14th I guess.

Also Metro Exodus, should rerelease in 13 days on Steam.

If playtracker is any correct, Blands 3 is around 2 mill, which is not good after soon 6 months and those big coupons, WWZ is 1 mill and sales may have dried up, Metro is about 700k, sales probably dried up, Satisfactory is 600k, sales also probably dried up, seems kind of frontloaded and every game after that might have dropped in sales like a cliff.

Tbh I can't see Borderlands 3 do a good number on Steam or reach EGS number.

I think it all depends on the price of BL3 at steam launch. If it is reduced and releases with some new dlc..I can see it being a big hit.

Like some 30$ complete edition but that will require 2K to be very aggressive. I don't think they'll do it especially since Cyberpunk got delayed out of April so they kind of have the month to themselves now on steam. At least as an fps game.

Also the port of BL3 wasn't that great irrc. Or did they fix it up after launch? That will probably have a big effect on steam reviews too which could hurt sales.

Looks like Epic silently removed Pandemic from their upcoming free games list. Probably due to the Coronavirus. This is the 2nd time they've silently changed the free game lineup in the past month. But its more understandable this time.

But the thing I find funny is this isn't even the only Coronavirus related mishap Epic has run into.

Last week, Epic was celebrating the lunar new year on Fortnite with a bunch of traditional Chinese inspired skins, and on the last day of the event (January 26th) they put all the Lunar Near Year skins in the item shop. But they also decided to put in plague doctor skins. Its unknown if this was intentional or just a coincidence, But considering Epic introduced a Aeronaut skin on 9/11 last year, I wouldn't put it past them to do something like this on purpose.

Pandemic's a really fun game (no idea how the digital version works - I've only played the tabletop version) so it's a shame that current events blown out of proportion by a media that wants to make us scared resulted in its exclusion.

seems kind of frontloaded and every game after that might have dropped in sales like a cliff.
That's exactly what it is. EGS games have no sales tail, so they may be able to lure in the day 1 people who want the game, are willing to pay full price and don't much care where they get it from (i.e. the kind of person who owns every console platform, has a ginormous spend on their hobby and doesn't really care much for how others like to experience their games if it's different from their own experience - I know this feeling because I used to have this attitude), but the vast majority of people don't want to buy a game until it's available on their terms. That could be its price, whether their friends are playing it, or because they want it on a platform that has features they want. All together, these factors seem to be indicating a "wait until Steam/GOG" attitude, with Epic and publishers/developers missing out on the sales tail.

As I've said many-a-time, it's not like we're running out of things to play while we wait. There's at least one good game a month released on Steam or GOG, and if they're not a AAA and don't sign up to Epic's bullshit exclusivity then Epic are denying themselves even those games. It's not a good way to build an empire - they are basically handing Steam exclusives which Valve doesn't have to pay for, and usually they're better than the games Epic curators have selected.

Meanwhile Plague Inc reached a new concurrent user and sales were stonk.

In that german dev roundtable thingy that was posted a while back, one dev who got an offer from Epic but refused implied that the egs contract might not be as simple as "you get a bunch of moneys day 1 and then nothing"), but rather paid out on a monthly basis. He didn't go into details, probably because NDA's and stuff and contracts could be different for different games, but might be worth keeping in mind.
Not sure if this would be better or worse than one big lump sum payment though. I guess better in the sense that you'll at least have some money each month even with 0 sales.

Even if it's paid out over time, there's nothing stopping devs from borrowing against that guaranteed income. Money now is pretty much always better than money later. If someone is going to squander it, you can't stop them.
I imagine epic pays over time to prevent devs from breaching the contract once they've gotten all the cash.

I sense there is a pattern of hypocrisy concerning Devs that take the bribe.

First they pocket giving exclusivity and a few months before this deal ends they have an announcement saying they are now excited they will launch their title on Steam/where ever and they are kind of apologetic about the EGS deal without, of course, denouncing it.

I say screw those Devs. Ignore them completely.

I can understand a struggling Dev going for life saving Sweeney money but they have to be honest to their audience and in no way antagonize it or reply to angry posts.

They haven't sold a single copy apart from the ones Tweeney bought, but at least they got a large blocklist out of this :p

Like spending all that money on drugs and Steam games.

And I'm not so sure about the drugs.
Don't want to seem like they're crawling back too hard.

Just checked the Blands 3 subreddit, only 1 story pack has been released for Blands 3 so far. Looking forward to the Steam release. Should be between march 13th and april 15th I guess.

Again, does anyone know when Ooblets is supposed to be released?
No idea, but I just googled it and their Devlog came up and the entry from the 30th of january sounds like they don't know either.

Better be mid april for them, cause Doom is coming out in mid march.
And I'm taking Doom over BL3 any time.

The issue with those contracts are the potential small print clauses.
And really, ANYTHING from it could be a pitfall for the dev

  • The payment could be 1/12th of the maximum sum(*) every month for 12 months. Good? Hell no! If you were banking on a big payout from the first day sales, you are beholden to the trickle of money every month instead of 70 to 90% of the money on month 1 (if your game has no legs)
  • the payment could be staggered based on the expected performance on Steam (like in the video, where he told that the starting negotiation point was their forecast of steam sales. So you could get 70% on month 1, 20% on month 2 and then 1% for every remaining month.

ANOTHER THING:
The contract payment could be based on the success of the game on the previous month. So lets say they told Tim they will sell 40% of their units in the first month and Tim pays out 40% of the exclusive money. And they stagger the rest of the sales in the next 11 months. Here comes the gut punch: There could be a clause, that the next payment is dependent on the sales of the previous month. Only if 80% of the expected sales were sold, will you get the next payout. They will never see more than 40% of the money if the game bombs.

We don't know if such contracts exist, surely not for the AAA titles. But it is a possibility, especially if Tim just wants to fatten his lineup but not empty his coffers. That could also be a reason why the exclusive lineup has thinned out, I don't believe that all of those devs suddenly grew an artistic spine and threw Tim out of the door because they uphold the freedom of PC gaming. There would be enough devs who would sell their souls.
Dev's can't talk openly about it, because of NDA's but they talk between each other and when they tell horror stories of only getting paid a pittance instead of millions because they didn't meet the sales criteria, more devs would be more wary about those exclusive contracts.

Tales from my ass, but Tim and Epic would be stupid if they don't have parachute and expectation clauses in the contracts. Anyone remember E.T. the game?
