Anyone watching SAO Alicization? How does it compare to GGO-Arc? GGO was pretty much the only SAO I liked after the original 14-Episodes which made up Aincrad-Arc.
Given how popular it is, I'd at least like to try to get into it. For what it's worth, I enjoyed SAO quite a lot when it came out but I got lost in the plethora of sequels, movies and such.

I've come across "Keep your hands off Eizouken" and it looks pretty promising,

I really hated the ALO crap on the other hand, so if it's more of that.... bleh.
I actually have just started watching yesterday, only the first episode done. It was quite lengthy (47 minutes). First impressions are, the premise is quite interesting as it's quite different from the previous series. My only gripe is that there are a lot of talking, explaining the new techs. Looking forward to the next episodes.

I need to finish this before the game is out later, probably this year.

Question for Detective Conan fans. Can I watch the movies without knowing anything about anime proper? I saw a couple of episodes a few years ago and have a vague knowledge about the mc, but that's it.

Well. I've watched the first season of Alicization so far (the first 20 something episodes).
It's not actually a "game" game this around, feels closer to an isekai.
Asuka actually has relevance this time around again, but only in the real world.
Kirito gets a male sidekick for the majority of the time.
It has the absolute worst instance of "the only way I know of conveying a person is evil is to have them attempt rape on-screen" small-time villains. Garbage.
The final boss is a woman that is always naked, even when fighting.
It has a strong start, a very interesting setting, and generally interesting side characters. As always the animation and music, etc is very good and entertaining.
The first season ended on a big cliffhanger, and I haven't continued watching yet, so not sure beyond that.

Make of this information what you will, lol.

I watched SAO s1 years after the fact knowing full well the hate-boner a good number of people have for the franchise. Can't really disagree with them, shit is full of ellipses from hell and the characters are... what they are, but at the same time it's nowhere near bad enough to warrant such animosity.
I could even watch the rest, but I completely forgot how Aincrad finished (more precisely how the fight resolved and the fate of the antagonist).

I watched the first episode of Eizouken over the weekend. It was completely not what I expected and it was amazing. Yuasa delivered.

Also continue to be supper happy about the Darwin's Game adaption, it's fantastic.

I watched a couple of fun shows.

Packed with animal trivia. I thought it's going to be a harem show, but it kind of is, but also not at the same time.

Bofuri: Unbalanced VRMMORPG, the show. Don't think too much about the game mechanics and just enjoy the healing it offers, I suppose.

Finished Death Note. Second half of the story wasn't as good as the first, but I still enjoyed it. The ending was very satisfying.

hum hum hum.

In prep for SAO Alicization I decided to re-watch SAO from the beginning and I did forget how comfy and warm Aincrad arc made me feel. Hearing "Crossing Field" again after so long was really nostalgic. I almost teared up. Almost.

Also I learned that GGO got a spin-off of it's own (GGO Alternative) so that's exciting news for me. Can't wait to see that. And I also remembered I have the GGO game on Steam!

Finished Hugtto! Precure.
What a ride. Overall this was really good, though I think the second half was overall weaker. The final episodes were really intense and emotional, but at the same time I think they are a bit too vague in some pretty important story related aspects, so I'm left somewhat confused.
I'm kind of impressed at some of the themes this show tackled, because whew, some really mature stuff in this show for little girls :sweaty-blob:

So yeah, overall a really ambitious and enjoyable show that didn't quite manage to tie all the various parts together as strongly as it maybe could have, but very good regardless.

Now what to watch next. :precure_hana_think:
I had previously watched a few eps of Max Heart, Precure 5 and Kirikira, so if anything I should continue with one of those.
Maybe Max Heart to get some Nagisa and Honoka nostalgia infusions, though I've heard the direct sequel Precure seasons aren't that good.

I've been on a 90's anime OST binge lately which has made me nostalgic and wondering what's up with anime lately.

I get the feeling that the scourge of moe has passed for several years. So, what's popular in Japan now? I don't need a super in depth run-over. Just tell me a 2 or 3 top genres and an example in each.

I'd heard of sword art online. Does seem like the genre is very popular in Japan. But the whole genre seems defined as a framing technique. I mean often media has an 'everyman' character as surrogate for the viewer - and with this they're emphasizing that connection. Are there any other hallmarks of the genre in anime? Seems like either fantasy or other genres with fantasy elements.

Also the slime thing is great and I look forward to the day where slime protagonists are normalized in the West beyond Gooigi.

Most Isekai are a stereotypical power fantasy mixed with harem elements.
It's sort of a the best-of-the-worst-of-anime tbh

Not really a genre i can enjoy myself beyond the funny ones like Konosuba, that one in particular is pretty good because it's more of a parody and has more to say about the genre itself than its seriously toned entries.

There's certainly a bunch of isekai that really only use it as a framing device without falling to stereotypes but they're more the exception than the rule.
Youjo senki for example, which is an edgy show about a guy being reborn as a nazi-loli :NotLikeDis:

Too bad, I didn’t hate the artwork. Is it a follow up to another series or stand alone ?
I really should watch the original Gundam, but the art and IQ is ehhh.

It's basically the second part of 5 compilation films from the 2014 TV anime.

If the original 1979 series art isn't your cup of tea, I can recommend reading The Origin, which is a retelling of the original, with the addition of certain characters' POV and minor plot element alteration. The anime adaptation OVA is a pretty good watch as well, although the manga artwork is in a league of its own so I'll always recommend the manga first and foremost.

The Origin was written and illustrated by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, who was the character designer of the original series. He is most famous for drawing dynamic action scenes without the aid of guidelines in perfect perspective.

Nicccceee. Thanks for this super helpful post. I know what Manga / Anime I'm looking for now !

Edit - And scratch that, a manga from 2013 in English, no digital version that I know of. This will be a walk in the park.

Today's Bofuri episode was just amazing, lmao.

I was a bit worried if the premise would get old after a few episodes, but thankfully nothing of the sort happened, if anything it got even more fun with the addition of the MCs friend (who is playing a different kind of broken character lmao).
Very much recommended!

Just got done watching Upotte!! yesterday.

Apart from the really unessecary ecchi, it was an okay anime.
While the idea of schoolgirls engaging in armed combat can never not be entertaining, the fights weren't exactly well directed.

As for me, just about done with Aincrad arc of SAO, probably will finish that up before bed. Nothing to really report outside of that, last weeks FGO Babylonia episode was another recap. 😴

Bofuri is certainly on my watchlist, I just can't pass up RPG related anime/show.

Too bad it's only 12 episodes, I like my adventure anime long. 24 episodes are just about right.

Does that mean you're watching Infinite Dendrogram as well?
I'm have read/am reading the Light Novels, and as far as VRMMO stuff goes, I like it a ton.
Mainly because it has really cool world building and the game mechanics are a mix of regular RPG and JoJo Stands, lol.

No, but it's because I simply don't watch ongoing anime.

It looks interesting though and perfectly fits my favorite genre, so I'll definitely watch it when it's finished later.

New Babylonia episode tomorrow. Last weeks was really heartbreaking. We're getting to the climax and I expect the fight scenes will be quite epic. I think Bone Daddy will show up soon too in all of his glory.

Also I finished Aincrad-Arc of SAO and am 3-epsiodes into the Alfheim portion. Just a big wave of nostalgia so far. I also noticed, at least so far, I'm much less critical of the Alfheim stuff this time. Kinda just going with the flow.

I watched Promare and it was alright. The animation and OST were really nice but Trigger does the same thing in almost every show they make ever since Imaishi made Gurren Laggan. At the end it's always about aliens or some world shattering event or both, which I don't mind that much, but it gets pretty cliched. It feels BNA will follow that too and I hope they don't.

I watched Nazi Loli Isekai the last two days, the Show was surprisingly unedgy and blah.
I wanted Edge.

There's basically no plot and the characters are all one note. There is only two cool fight scenes in the entire season too.

If this is about Tanya, the novels are more highly praised. I don't know if they are available outside Japan though. :thinking-face:

And I believe the author is still on hiatus. Very good historical knowledge and nice writing style.

I'm not much of a light novel reader tbh.
But i might look into it because history is always great 👌

Finished watching Mahou Sentai Magiranger. Was my first Super Sentai show (well, aside from some Power Rangers as a kid, which I don't really remember much tbh).
It took a bit until I got into it, but in the end it was really good. Had some real hype stuff and great character development. Having the team be a family was also a pretty neat dynamic.

Now jumping forward a few years to Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. The OP is so catchy

Largely the same issues as the show, but that fight was really rad

If the show had more of that kind of character going forward it'd be pretty great

As for me, yesterday I finished my SAO Season 1 re-watch.

I really liked it, maybe even more so than the first time I watched it when it came out. I definitely felt less harsh towards the Alfheim portion as well. And the ending was just so sweet.

It does have problems though. I hate that Asuna was relegated to Damsel status in Part 2. I hate the Deus Ex Machina. It's a bit lazy.

If you look through modern reviews, people are really harsh towards SAO though. And I notice a lot of people really blame it for the current Isekai trend (because they're stupid and forget .hack existed lol.)

Really I feel like a lot of the hate is undeserved. SAO definitely catapulted Isekai as a genre, but that really shouldn't be a mark against SAO itself. It's beautifully animated, with an amazing OST, and it does some things other Isekai still don't do to this day and that is talking about the psychological aspects of it.

Anyway I'm glad I re-watched it. I teared up a lot. Somehow it's a really nostalgic series for me. I think it's because it's one of the last series I watched as it aired. Right around the end of 2012 is when I stopped following anime in general and kinda just got stuck watching old stuff or just occasionally trying something out based a lot of recommendations.

In fact, I think the currently running FGO: Babylonia is the first anime I'm watching as it airs since SAO all the way back in 2012.

its pretty easy to explain why , yes the show hash ton of problems , the novel itself rushes lots of plot (to the point the wrtier is now doing "SAO Progressive" novels which is pretty much Aincad again but this time level by level to expand and fill the gaps) and anime is pretty much even faster version of that so they skip lots of explainers and moments.
But in the end the current hate towards the show can be easily pinpointed to few big youtubers who did extensive "analysis" to explain honitpick pretty much every second of it (often without the knowledge of the nocel) along with the popularity of Abrridged .
