So I'm a Tokusatsu fan (Toku for short if it's easier on folks), and was hoping to get a community together, for either long time fans or news fans or even people somewhat interested in the franchise.

What is Tokusatsu?
Tokusatsu is a live action television series or asian drama that heavily uses special effects. Tokusatsu ranges from all kinds of genres but the most well known and popular are science fiction, fiction and horror. It started in early Japanese theater but was restricted to costumes and puppets, it wasn't until the 1950s where modern Tokusatsu (People in costumes fighting other costumes monsters) began to realize.

I've never seen a Tokusatsu before, what's it like?
Actually you have! Well known shows that where brought over to the USA include "Power Ranger", "Big Bad Beetleborgs", "Masked Rider", "VR Troopers", "Godzilla" and "Ultraman". Unless you where born yesterday, you'd have seen one of these at least, and are considered Tokusatsu (to give you an idea to the potential "cheese factor" of the shows"

What type of Tokusatsu shows are there?
There are different franchises, each one with a different flavor:
Kaiju are the monster movies, Kaiju translates to "Mysterious/Strange beasts", Godzilla, Mothra, Gamera and King Kong.
Kaijin, which translates to "Mysterious Person", involve super villains/evil as the central characters of their shows.
Super Hero - Super Hero is a no brainer, These are series created with the guidance of Shotaro Ishinomori (Who you may know as the creator of Cyborg 009,009-1 and Genma Wars). However there are severeal franchises of super hero to be accustomed to:
-- Super Sentai, which translates to "Super Taskforce" and it the most well known in the US, Super Sentai is adapted to what the US knows as "Power Rangers", each series revolves around a colorful team of warriors who protect the planet from evil. It should be noted the term "Super Sentai" was not used until the third Sentai seres "Battle Fever J", until then the series was only called "Sentai" with the titles "Himitsu Sentai Goranger (Secret Taskforce Goranger)" and "J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai" (J.A.K.Q. Blitzkrieg Squad)"
-- Kamen Rider, which translated to "Masked Rider". It was brought over to the US with none to little success between the original "Masked Rider", a US adaption of "Kamen RIder Black RX" by Saban and later with the release for the more mature "Kamen Rider Dragon Knight" (an American adaption of "Kamen Rider Ryuki"). Kamen RIder generally had a bug theme to them until the start of the Heisei Era when they started going into other themes (Trading cards, cell phones, video games, fruit/warlord, cars, and ghosts). They are generally solo heroes and don't rely on giant mechs (Opting for the signature "Rider Kick" to finish the job), although starting in the Heisei era (minus one exception) the addition of Secondary Riders and Third Riders begin to appear as a series progresses, some series exceed these Rider numbers but are generally regulated to movie exclusive or very small minor roles (cannon fodder).
-- Metal Heroes, Metal Heroes have several US adaptions that are not connected but are a part of the same franchise including "Big Bad Beetleborgs/Metallix" and "VR Troopers" (It should be noted "Vr Troopers" itself is a cultivation of three completely separate Metal Heroes know as "Space Sheriffs". Metal Heroes declined in popularity the most in the 80s and 90s and thus are generally regulated to films.
-- GARO, translated as "Fanged Wolf", is a late night, for mature audiences hero based television show
-- Misc, Shows that fall under Tokusatsu but have no franchise as large as the others are Kikaider, Kaiketsu Zubat, Android Detective and Spider-Man (YES Marvel's Spider-Man)

Thats all for now! I'll update the OP if there are any other questions that need addressing! Hope to find a lot of other fans!
ALSO NOTE:
I feel that unless discussions get jumbled that if people want to discuss Power Rangers (The US product) then doing so here should be fine. If people want a dedicated Power Ranger chat I'll whip one up.

Well I'm sure posting links to illegal streaming and torrents in a big no-no like most forums. But if you want, I can help you out later.

Shout Factory got license to bring Super Sentai to the states. Mighty Morphin being based on Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger. It's like watching brand new footage of original Mighty Morphin.
So far they've released:
Choujin Sentai Jetman (The first non adapted series to be released)
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger (MMPR Season 1)
Gosei Sentai Dairanger (MMPR Season 2)
Ninja Sentai Kakuranger (MMPR Season 3+Alien Ranger)
Chouriki Sentai Ohranger (Zeo)
Gekisou Sentai Carranger (Turbo)
Denji Sentai Megaranger (Space)
Seijuu Sentai Gingaman (Lost Galaxy)
KyuuKyuu Sentai GoGoFive (Lightspeed Rescue)
Mirai Sentai Timeranger (Timeforce)
Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger (Wild Force) (newly released)

I'm hoping they'll start releasing earlier Sentai like Maskman and Liveman.

Nice thread!
Always liked Tokusatsu even before I knew it was Tokusatsu (Godzilla and Power Rangers as a kid).
Never really watched actual live-action japanese tokusatsu shows until last year, or the year before (don't remember) where I started watching Garo after loving the anime (the first one, the others are apparently different flavors of meh) and have watched 4 seasons of it meanwhile, haha.

Have been wanting to try out a Kamen Rider show as well and others. How connected are the Kamen Rider shows?

Generally Riders are in their "own universe" but in the same world at the same time (with two exceptions).
Heisei Riders starting from Kuuga up to Kiva implied they where in their own world considering the events of the series and films where as Showa Riders (Ichigo to Black RX) have been clear they're in the same world and occasionally showed up in each other's series. Kamen Rider Decade is where it gets weird because Decade is the Destroyer of Worlds, where he's supposed to destroy the Riders to save their worlds? Its heavily implied Heisei Riders are all in different universes (and in fact there are multiple universes of Riders since non of the original Riders play their roles in Decade. Decade himself has no "world" as his entire battle expands over dozens of various worlds. Afterward, Decade and W starred in a co-starring film and every Rider after that up until Ex-Aid and Ghost had a team up film implying they're in the same universe. Occasionally they team up with Super Sentai teams too in films or spring specials. Zi-O makes it weirder since it's a time traveling Kamen Rider that implies every Heisei Rider share the same universe and same timeline..
But back to that exception:
Kamen Rider Build is the first series where the series itself acknowledges that it takes place in a completely different reality (How Build appears at the end of Ex-aid isn't entirely explained).

it's best to accept it as "they're in the same universe, but they don't like to interact their stories"

EDIT: Might take me a while to get an actual cover photo, it seems to wanna fight me

I also wanted to watch Fourze first after hearing good things about it, but I really don't feel comfortable with jumping into ongoing franchises somewhere random in the middle, but I also didn't want to watch 40 years of TV series before what I actually want to watch, so the compromise I made was starting with W, the first of the "Heisei Phase 2" shows (and I heard it was also good and the "gimmick" sounded interesting), so I did that :p
I'm going to work my way through those and will probably realize eventually that I can just skip around how I feel like anyway..., but that's fine.

Not me, I jump around all over the place. I've seen everything after Fourze, and I've been going back and watching older Riders like Decade, Kabuto and Faiz.
I just recently started Kuuga. There's a weird charm about the poorer camera quality in older Heisei stuff.

Making my wy through Kamen Rider W and it's been excellent. It feel like it's getting better with each two-parter too!
Very good mix of fun and tense too. Like, it has some extremely tense episodes and then some lighthearted fun ones.
Also right now in the middle of watching an episode about a Song Contest and the main duo ended up performing one of the insert songs on stage and the 2 people who sing the opening are among the judges, lol.

God, that was excellent all the way through. I don't think it had a single bad episode. That was extremely, extremely good.
Now there's a bunch of movies and extras I still need to watch, but for now I think I want to check out the first episode of the next one, OOO.

Great thread.

I would love to be able to watch any of the Metal Heroes/Space Sheriffs series, even the classic ones. They're practically my aesthetic.

Nice! I don't see many Metal Hero fans considering the time gap since Metal Heroes ended. I'm still hoping Shout Factory will expand to Kamen Riders, GARO and Metal Heroes in the future.

That's interesting. I heard a lot of good things about W before starting.

It could just be the circle I'm in, If you say W was great then I'll trust your judgement and watch it after I finished Blade

But they were talking about design/powerset? I don't really have a point of reference for that after all. W is also pretty goofy, especially at the beginning.

So I've watched 10 episodes of OOO now. I really like it too! Lol. But W has better insert songs.
Kind of funny how both of them seem to go from "this is pretty interesting and neat" to "yo, this is really cool" at the late single digit/early double digits for me.
Eiji is a cool protagonist and the character dynamics between him, Ankh and Hina are super good. Also, potential romance! I kind of missed that in W. It did compensate with the best bromance though.

Apologies, I needed to geek out.

I attend ConnectiCon every summer. And I found out in the last few days that Walter Jones (The Original Black Ranger), and David FIelding (Zordon) will be attending this summer, I THEN just found out today that Austin St John (Original Red Ranger/Gold Zeo Ranger and my personal favortie Ranger/childhood hero) will be attending the convention this summer too!
I'm even more excited because generally, when Walter/David/Austin attend a con together, Karan Ashley (2nd Yellow Ranger), and David Yost (Blue MMPR) arent too far behind!

AH SO EXCITE!

I finished watching OOO yesterday and started watching Fourze now.
It was good. I liked Os design and powers more than Double. His last form was awesome. Though they all have silly names, and the insert songs didn't blow me away. Some of the regular themes were a bit too goofy for me as well, though it did have some really strong emotional themes.
The Eiji/Hina/Ankh relation was really good, especially towards the end. Great side cast too.
Also greatly enjoyed how everyone had lots of different outfits, regular clothes and even outright costumes in the Cous Coussier. Love stuff like that.
Talking about clothes, I like how the Greed's regular clothes were color-coded (Ankh's single red sleeve on all his outfits is ace) and the color-coded curtains/clothes (very in your face during the Greed meetings, but also Ankh's bed sheet was red and from the same material) and the color-coded lighting. Very neat touches.
I'm a bit puzzled about what Kougami's plan actually was in the end. It felt somewhat unsatisfying on that front. The Greeds as antagonists also let me a bit down at the end. Their desires and betrayels were interesting to watch for sure to an extent, but I felt there could have been more done with them. But it felt like a sideshow compared to the stuff between Ankh and Eiji (and to an extent Hina) anyway, so I'm not too fussed. I guess what I'm saying is I like the personal connections between the good guys an bad guys like in W and there wasn't really anything like that with the Greed.

Fourze has pretty much already grabbed me from the first episode though. Gentarou is awesome. The music great. I very much enjoy the setting.
And if I'd known it had an insert song like this:

I might have wanted to watch it way sooner :p

She sounds like Mizuki Nana, but isn't.

Anyway, I've now watched a hundred Kamen Rider episodes this year, christ.

Only 100? Step up to my level xD
But thats cool, Fourze is nostalgic for me because it was my first Kamen Rider. It aired alongside my first Sentai, Gokaiger. Gentarou has an energy about him that honestly never goes away, when you get a chance you need to watch the OOOxFourze Movie.

In other news, Ronda Rousey proves why shes the queen of bad ass nerds

Alright it's been a while, but here's some updates on my Kamen Rider watchings:

Finished Fourze a while ago, I really enjoyed it overall - Gentarou is such a blast to watch - though I do admit that the formula was already a bit exhausting at this point.

So I decided to take a bit of a brake and fumbled around for a bit.
Morbid curiosity ultimately got the better of me and I continued on with Wizard. Which I've decisively dropped after 3 episodes. The suit and action seemed to be really cool, but it didn't really jive with me (and I heard it was really mediocre).

Watched Gaim afterwards, which was certainly a breath of fresh air and a really wild ride. Enjoyed it a lot, though it was pretty heavy to watch at times.

I went into Drive right after, which I'm still watching right now (reached the halfway point) and I'm absolutely loving it. It will probably replace W as my current favorite.
Shinnosuke is so good, the show is just full of energy, it's funny, Chase and Heart are super good as well and the music has consistently been awesome. They've been overusing the opening theme as an insert song at the beginning, but it's moved past that for a while now, so yay.

Guys, what would you recommend to watch for newbies?

I and my pal tried to watch Urobutcher's Kamen Rider, but we were constantly laughing at special effects and some of the acting. Is there anything slightly more serious and with better production values?

And that was Drive. I think I binged it in a single week. Damn.
I can confidently say this is my favorite Rider show so far (out of W, OOO, Fourze and Gaim).
It's crazy how it went from something that's mostly light-hearted, sometimes really goofy, sometimes tense to something really serious and emotional. I straight up cried at the end.
when Chase and Heart died. Also Heart is a crazy good antagonist.
Amazing show.

Now I'll watch an episode or 2 of Ghost, to get some general idea, and considering I haven't heard much good about it, probably skip straight to Ex-Aid after that.

Guys, what would you recommend to watch for newbies?

Hm. Gaim is actually really serious most of the time and goes places. But especially in the beginning it sure has its goofy moments and the suits and powersets are definitely really silly. I think there's some inherent sillyness in all tokusatsu, but Gaim is really something else at times, lol.

I'm by no means an expert (only started watching Kamen Rider this year, and some Garo last year), so take my words with a grain of salt:

If you're looking something more darker/serious/mature then I'd suggest the first 2 seasons of Garo.

If you go with that I recommend watching Season 1 -> Beast of the Demon Night -> Red Requiem -> Season 2 (Makai Senki).
Demon Night and Red Requiem are Specials/Movies that happen inbetween and are pretty relevant for season 2.

For Kamen Rider stuff, my first one was W and I really enjoyed that one. It's also on the light-hearted/goofy side at the beginning and then goes serious after a while. It has some silly designs and powers but probably not as silly as Gaim's fruit theme.

OOO is a bit more serious iirc and the powers and suits (animal theme) not as goofy as W, so that could work too.
And my Drive impressions are above :p

So I haven't posted in this thread since I finished Drive, huh.
I've (as expected) skipped Kamen Rider Ghost after the first episode and went straight to Ex-Aid.
Which is completely weird/zany/over-the-top. At the beginning at least. Like Drive, once it got serious it just never stopped :sweaty-blob:
Really good.

Then I watched Build, which was also extremely good. Though some parts toward the end felt a bit dragged out.

Then I went way back and started watching Agito. (Wich I'm not done with yet. I mostly like it, but some parts I don't). And after lots of Kamen Rider I just needed a break, so I've watched some Super Sentai.

Mahou Sentai Magiranger, which was lots of fun after I got some eps into it.

And I'm not in the middle of Samurai Sentai Shinkenger, which has sofar been very good as well.

God there's so much Tokusatsu stuff to watch :sweaty-blob:

I may or may not write some a bit more detailed impressions if anyone cares (and if I'm not too lazy).

Alright chaps,
I've long wantd to watch through Kamen Rider but I'm a bit of a nitpicky fellow and have the following series in mind to watch-
Kamen Rider Black and Black RX

Beyond that is the 2000s era, of which I plan to watch
Faiz and Decade

Here is where i need y'all's help: What series from the 2000s are worth watching? Like best of the best?

I intend to go through the 2010s series but the 2000s being the revival era is one I'm hesitant to watch through much of.

I've watched most of the Heisei Phase 2 shows (2009-2019, everything except Ghost, Wizard and Zi-Oh).
I can't comment on Zi-Oh, because I'm waiting until I've watched more of the Heisei Phase 1 shows (2000-2009) for that one, but Ghost and Wizard are considered not great and very skippable.

As for Phase 1, I'm currently watching my way through them.
My impressions so far:
Kuuga (2000): absolutely fantastic, one of my overall favorites.
Agito (2001): has a few annoying parts, but overall a very strong entry.
Ryuki (2002): I'm about 1/3rd through, so far it's good and I've heard good things about it in general.

Can't comment about the others yet.

I started watching Toku just past month thanks to Dangerous Zombie .

I've knocked out from Kamen Rider:
  • Kuuga
  • Ryuki
  • Gaim
  • Ex-Aid
  • Build
Currently watching:
  • W
  • 555
  • Blade

Some scenes in the early 2000s shows have been nightmare material, I could not imagine watching some of those scenes as a child :surrenderblob:. Especially in Ryuki when
Imperder dies and Shinji

Shout Factory has some. I have only watched Kuuga there. I really love Kamen Rider Kuuga, but it's nothing like any of the other Kamen Riders - especially the more recent ones. It's sort of like half cop-drama. It can be a really slow burn.

I haven't watched any Ultraman and do not have any particular interest in Super Sentai - so can't comment on the quality of those.

They have been uploading the first two episodes of a bunch of the Kamen Rider series with English subs. You can get a feel for them here,

but sadly - the only way for a lot of non-asia fans to watch alot of these shows is via non-legal means.

Shout Factory has some. I have only watched Kuuga there. I really love Kamen Rider Kuuga, but it's nothing like any of the other Kamen Riders - especially the more recent ones. It's sort of like half cop-drama. It can be a really slow burn.
Kuuga is fan-fucking-tastic indeed, highly recommended.

They're also going to add Ryuki soon, apparently. Which I just finished watching and would also highly recommend. Very different again, and it was the first one that introduced certain concepts a lot of the later series would also pick up.
It didn't super grab me in the beginning, I found the characters to be kinda annoying, but they were growing on me and it was with the introduction of one character in the early 10s that it really got its hooks into me and just became more and more interesting, I binged the remaining 30+ episodes in just 2 weeks :grimacing-face:.
Very interesting ending too.

Started watching Ultraman Z and it's been really fun. The target demograph for this series is very apparent, but if Ultraman's attacks all had the sfx they'd make some attacks or fights look cooler.

:O

tEMPTEd more and more to go through the 60 and 70s series XP

I am slowly going thru Z as I want to fully binge it during my leave from work starting next week and then maybe go to the prior series. But man ep. 4 and 5 were great and satisfying.

Ultraman Orb is confusing me;
can I watch it, the origin then the movie and it's enough, or should I skip it and just go into the succeeding series, Geed?
