I'm going through some rather tough times and firing up Hollow Knight really filled me with that soothing nostalgia. Ori's probably next. Kingmaker is as amazing at eliciting that sense of Baldur's Gate-like adventure too. They help a lot.

Hollow Knight is like that for me too. It's such a comfortable world and it's easy to jump right back into. It's just right on a cold rainy day.

Hollow Knight is a treat, but I hope that they don't go overboard with the difficulty in Silksong.
HK was a challenge but I finished it, but the DLC really got into unfair territory (and added some wonky ass platforming; after the white palace which was already pretty bleh).

This always work!

Anyway, my little haul

Nekopara volume 4 is released. Activity feed is disabled. Coincidence? My guess would be that Gabe secretly likes anime.

Have we ever seen Gabe Newell and the neko girls in the same room? I don't think so.
Maybe he's hiding his acting skills.

The only major issues I had where I felt HK was unfair, or more to the point not respecting my time, was when there was major backtracking through very challenging areas. Sure, I got good at them by sheer repetition but I can't say it was with a smile on my face. I know there's a way to shortcut that but I don't think it was a great choice to gate a convenience item behind the large amount of grind required to get it.

Do we know for sure that a certain someone we know doesn't have enough clout to Gabe a call and arrange the Activity Feed to go down to cover their New Years' Anime Game Haul? I haven't seen any evidence that they didn't.

Likewise. I really like HK but the souls-like aspects of tedious repetition and long walks back because of course we can't let you retry right away are really one of the really bullshit design decisions to come from the souls game in my opinion.

Yeah I think so too. I don't get the same feeling of accomplishment that some people seem to get with that aspect of Souls-ish games. Challenge is one thing, but being stuck for three days because I'm just trying to get this damn charm is something else. When it's over with I don't feel triumph, I feel like never seeing that part again. I feel thrilled, like the clouds had lifted and they gave my game back. I'm not asking for Meat Boy-like instant restart here, but don't make me fight for 5 minutes just to arrive half dead. It's like the devs wanted to shorten my actual life with stress.

To be fair though, HK always lets you go do something else for a bit, or it turns out you were missing a charm combo strategy that makes it much easier. I'm bitching here but it's in my top 5 of all time. It was the game that made Super Metroid, old as it is, to finally feel obsolete.

I absolutely agree that Souls-like game wasting your time going back to the boss is terrible.
And it still got a lot better! Demon's Souls was awful wit that. Did they change that in the remake?

Don't see where "surmounting the challenge" is when you just roll away like a maniac between monsters while reaching for the boss door.
Those games need frequent checkpoints, especially before tough encounters.

tbh DS/DS3 (havent played DeS/BB/DS2 yet) would lose some of the appeal to me if there was the "skip straigh to boss" once you reach it once ... with exception of like two fights never really felt comeback to be so long to call it waste of time ... also probably the locations wouldnt feel so memorable if it was the case

Tizoc Who knows. At first glance this reads like wishful thinking, too full of major announcements to be true. But on the other side, Nintendo has been asleep for some years now, why not.

I need to sell my Switch asap. Lazy.

I don't think I've ever had it crash, I have about 5 group chats open on it
Wait, so you can send emotes and stuff?

Mine crashes all the time, but especially when trying to send emotes.

I've been playing Bugsnax on my PS5 since I ended up getting a year of PS+ and well. It's an okay game. Now I'm not sure if it's the game or my PS5 but the game does have some performance issues, it is not a locked 60fps I can tell you that much, when ever I try to "run and stuff" it just feels bad.

The game is okay it's not great but it's also not terrible, so it's tolerable.

Also the whole Dual Sense controller stuff can be cool in a way but I also think that adaptive trigger are very dumb. They likely will break my controller. It just feels like it is going to break because if the way it shakes.

scratches head

I dunno if I'd call this an accurate proper leak but it does mention cloud service....non the less take it with a grain of salt

1440p when?

Agh! I'm completely lost in the Nether in Minecraft. Any tips how to find a way out?
If you can't find your way back to your portal, you might be in trouble. You can always make a new one BUT you need a way to get obsidian I think. You could die somewhere memorable and note your coordinates and then navigate your way back with supplies to get out again

Yeah that is my backup plan, now I'm just digging straight towards the way I think I came from to see if I manage to come to a place I recognise. I need to remind myself to leave torches everywhere next time to find my way back!

Looking at mobile phones to solve my bank 2FA issue and enter the 2010's.
This is gonna cost me, won't it ?

Not even a fucking headphone included in the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro.

So I started playing Alpha Protocol, our retro game of the month. Been on my backlog for ever, so I guess I should thank lash for giving me a good excuse to finally dust it off. :face-savouring-delicious-food:

It's an interesting game for sure. James Bond style action game meets RPG, made from Obsidian. I liked the beginning of the game, it uses the prologue to effectively hide what's an overlong tutorial sequence, and allows you to skip to the story bits very quickly if you wish to do so. I kinda wish they had the budget to allow you to choose different voice actors, or even gender. Playing this with a female PC would be like having a spiritual sequel to No OneLives Forever.
Game itself doesn't feel super janky so far, but knowing Obsidian, that will probably become of an issue later own.

Yeah, just sent an emote to the metacouncil group chat from my phone just now

Some interesting titles in development

Do you have an NVidia card? Use SSGSS AA, really smooths up most of the models.
