This is the result of 5 minutes work with Steam ROM Manager -- it's not perfect of course, since some of my ISOs are named with the serial and not the game name.. but you can see it eliminates most of the busywork of compiling your own library by hand.
Trying it. How can I make it so SRM looks for games in each subdirectory ? Apparently, as is, it works only if I set the exact path of a game.

Very annoyed that it apparently overwrites every links it created if you generate others. I mean, I'm sure there is a way, it's just that I'm... looking for a clear but not too harsh word here :thinking-blob:
  • Example, I try the parser (badly configured, as mentioned) and add game A.
  • Hey, it works ! Hmm no boxarts even if the game has a boxart on Steamgrid, must be a file name issue, no big deal.
  • Add boxart.
  • Hey I could try another game !
  • Redo the parser thing.
  • Game B is here, no more game A.

I'm certain the two issues are very probably on me.

In case anyone wants more to see more footage from pre-release Shadow of Chernobyl, I've recorded the no-commentary demo from an alpha build 1935 in 4K/60 FPS and with disabled HUD:

This build is relatively easy to find and it was leaked ages ago so nothing really new. But I try to occasionally upload HUDless gameplay videos from different games, and I thought that this alpha version might be a good fit for that.

There are more interesting quotes but I feel pasting them would make the post a brick of wall.
It's an interesting read nevertheless.
There was an article on Nintendo Life or something too. Apparently someone decided that it was the big thing du jour.
Useless drama, I say.

Not defending the guy, just seeing too much mediocrity on every side to care :shrugblob: (but that's just my take).

Fuck, someone elsewhere just replied to me saying Nioh 2 DLC doesn't have the same difficulty spike than 1.
Have I ever said I'm easily swayed :nervous:

I really hated Nioh. I really loved Nioh. It's the poster child of my divisive take : playing Souls-like levels is great / miss me with your bosses.
I still have bad memories of one of the last fight in the first game, not even a boss, just three men dogpiling on me, had to glitch my way out of it.

Do you have the ISOs for each platform/emulator separated in each subdirectory, or just for a single emulator but spread in subdirectories? AFAIK you can use regular expressions, (Click the FAQ button on the bottom right corner) but I never tried it since I have a flat structure for my library (one subdirectory per platform)

Did you close the Steam client before running the parser? It will basically overwrite the Steam Category you assigned the Parser to (sharedconfig.vdf). Alternatively, if you want to keep an existing shortcut, you can move it to another category before saving the app list.

We have to get used to it.

For all these years, I thought English would allow me to play most video-games, except some Japanese RPG which had not yet been translated (but would eventually be). With China opening the valve, I slowly realize that there is a large offer of high-quality games made by Chinese studios and targeted solely at their billion-people national market. It is a bit crazy, because we only see the small tip of the iceberg via Steam. We would need to master fluent Chinese language and be allowed a full access to their national Internet to learn what is in store with Tencent, WeGame, etc.

Edit: There are barely more English speakers (mostly second language) than Chinese speakers (mostly first language). Crazy how we live in 2 different worlds.

Yeah, I have set on using a directory for each platform with sub directories for each game.

The OP on Era had a pretty unprofessional tone, and it's clear he was pretty but hurt about No Mans Sky getting that spotlight when it was all based on so many misconceptions. Sure, his OP was unprofessional, but was it wrong? The only real defence I have seen are either completely dismissing this topic, because "games don't matter", which is not an argument, but just saying you'd rather have the hype and never have any serious debate about anything game related.

The other one was arguing that the developers in question, especially Hello Games, were just being naive. They sure set up a lot of promises and the devs sure didn't bother to set people's expectations right. They could have gone out to say "you'll never see another player because we didn't implement it, and that won't be in the shipped games, not right away" but instead talked eabout how unlikely it is that it could ever happen. They continued this deception even in major TV shows they were invited to.
cue to players sharing their location and meeting up 5 minutes after the game is out. quelle suprise

Either they are dumb as bricks, or they implicitly lied about it. I sure know what I believe.

So yeah, the thread by Mahler was surely bitter, but I think his bitterness is understandable.

Parser can now find the games. It was a matter of reading the FAQ (gotta find it first, it is in plain view but doesn't exactly jump at you) and experimenting with parameters.

edit - damn, it's really painless once you get past this little snag.

I have used Google Translate to read this article in Chinese, because I wanted to check if it the expression "other forum" was used in the original text. :kappa:
Answer: it is not.

TIL there is an apology on Twitter. It seems like he went overboard as most people do when using the Internet. The abyss will gaze back into you.

Yeah sorry for that. That was my fault. I did it intentionally since I knew people said not to mention the other forum so I just replaced the original word with "Other" forum and put it in italic format.

This looks like a good streaming to watch in a few months

Wasn't there a time where the Chinese people complained the lack of Chinese localization in many games on Steam? Look what we have here today, lots of games from China that doesn't have English localization.
China sure has grown a lot in few years in the gaming market

I think one of the main reasons pubs and devs aren't ignoring Steam/PC the way they did before and why lots of pubs returned to Steam or looking at releasing on PC (Sony) is because of China.

China is enormous and they are mainly playing on mobile and PC. With games like Dyson and Tale of Immortal both having sold hundreds of thousands of copies the past few weeks Steam and PC in general are one of very few ways non-China devs and pubs can enter the market, China is not going anywhere. Consoles are barely a thing in China.

Don't be sorry. It is fine (and it was funny). I like your posts.

I am not sure it has grown. I think it is mostly us discovering that it exists (and has likely existed for a long time).

Wasn't there a time where the Chinese people complained the lack of Chinese localization in many games on Steam?
All the time, and they still do. But that is bound to change. Basically, the most efficient way to make bucks on Steam is to have both an English translation and a Chinese translation. Russian market is supposed to be big too, but it is about 1/10th of the (English+Chinese) audience. So English-speaking dev studios should pay Chinese translators, that is in their interest. Other translations are not necessarily worth it.

I think one of the main reasons pubs and devs aren't ignoring Steam/PC the way they did before and why lots of pubs returned to Steam or looking at releasing on PC (Sony) is because of China.
It makes sense. True.

Ah, RetroArch links crash to desktop. Of fucking course, it's always fucking RetroArch.

In the case of a Wii game, core installed of course.
I get the nifty RA black bar where the emulator name is supposed to display, then boom.

Yeah, from my understanding China has always had a big indie scene, it's just that Steam releases have brought them to our attention.

The Xuan Yuan Sword series for example is like 30 years old lol

Lol. No dramas. I'm tinkering with games and not really playing anything anyway. If Retroarch is crashing, make a backup of your current retroarch.cfg and delete it from the directory. It will regenerate a new copy and hopefully won't crash when everything is set to default
In the case of a Wii game, core installed of course.
It's been awhile since I've booted any Wii games, but try using the gl driver instead of Vulkan.

RA doesn't crash when used standalone though, the game runs. Must be an issue with the link parameter.
I guess I will ask on SRM Discord, maybe...

edit -
And now it works fine. When I already asked my question on the Discord.
Well ok, fuck you very much RetroArch.

I mean, Chinese people still complain these days because some devs/pubs still don't get it somehow. Most of the cases are in indies/smaller games, but they're really missing out. As for bigger games Mass Effect remastered doesn't have Chinese language.

Tizoc Dap looks really nice! I look forward to trying the demo out.

Edit : also for what it's worth, I think Thomas was right in principle, but Era is not the place where you want to have a balanced and rational discussion in my experience. Not many of those on the internet at any rate. But yeah, the media is shamelessly and actively promoting that over-promise, under-deliver behavior, to the point of lies. And all that sits well with the media. From their point of view, all they care about and ultimately keeps them in the black is engagement.

And boy, does rage qualify as engagement, as do protracted controversies and drama. They aren't exactly helping keep devs honest before it is too late for people buying their games.

Actually ..... Pushes up anime glasses

I'm aware of this and also Nintendo and others doing this in the past but then they basically stoped. And it feels like it has not been until very recent years where in general companies have been pushing for this in order to increase the longevity of their game and DLC.

I mean Nintendo use to do that one event but then they stopped. With FGC stuff I don't think the developers were as involved as they are now?

Yay or nay on Metro Exodus and how is it's DLC? I have 20€ to spend on xbox and the Gold edition is 20. Don't see it coming back to game pass anytime soon and the next gen patch is on its way, so little tempted.

Ahhhhh KT.....

They could fix things just but doing a Steam news update saying that they will fix the UI with a patch. That's all they need to do. Maybe they will say something later today.

I think you should do it, 20 euro for gold edition is not bad and if you don't like it you can probably refund it as Xbox doesn't have as terible refund system as Playstation and Nintendo.

I enjoyed M2033 and M:LL a lot and I was quite pleased with Metro: Exodus. The open world areas were a fun change of pace and the Metro gameplay loop lends itself well to exploring and looking for side content. The DLCs were a lot of fun too. The last one gives you a boat for a bit of exploration and another wide-linear area which is pretty neat.

Factorio expansion coming and the game has sold 2,5 million copies on Steam.

I find it interesting that the option of making another game (not Factorio 2) was not even in the cards according to the blog.
I believe it would be interesting to see this team try to do something else, besides a Factorio expansion.

I was mildly interested in Nioh 2 but the minimum system requirements and bare graphics settings make me think it’d be a bad idea with my current setup.

There was talk once from the devs of orbital space factories but I think it seemed to them like taking it too far and the game would never be "finished." Although here we are where the game is never finished. On to space factories!

It's a Caldwell-Gervais video, fairly normal length for his stuff. If you think of it as a fan-made documentary with in-depth analysis, it's not that strange. It's only weird in the context of Youtube that still dominated by a lot of shorter content.
Interesting, I wasn't familiar with his work thanks.
