So what you are saying is that Epic losing more money is saving Epic Store exclusives from flopping even harder?
Funny but true. We've seen the huge spikes in consumer spending during the Mega Sales with coupons in Epic's leaked documents.

While this may sound like a bad situation, it's probably more than worth it for Epic:

- lots of games that would have flopped at full price are selling decent numbers, which feeds their narrative that EGS is doing well

- increased consumer spending to please the suits and investors

- people aren't buying these games on Steam but are building a library on EGS instead

I see people already claiming that Epic's Mega Sales are now what the Steam sales used to be. Also, no doubt these coupons will motivate many devs to publish on EGS when the store opens up.

Epic is following Amazons strategy: burn lots of money in order to push (better) competitors out of business. It's sad to see people considering this as a good thing, because in the long run it definitely isn't healthy competition. But hey, people are getting €10 coupons so who cares 🤷‍♂️

Do you have anything to back these claims up? I mean, based on actual numbers, people don't care about EGS outside free games and coupon sales.

The thing is, amazon might burn cash but they aren't really losing money. And in general their strategy is to build similar services for a better price, I mean they are (or at least were) selling the (base)Kindle at 0 profit.

But their policy is to benefit the customer(*), Epic on the other hand tries to benefit the publisher.

(*) There's an argument to be made about Amazon (and others) becoming such a big company but that's a discussion for another day.

Yeah, with the trial papers we can see spending greatly increases with each sale, it's pretty clear what they are doing.

I never said otherwise. But my point is that this situation still benefits Epic. Don't forget Epic's end goal isn't to convince consumers into using their store. Their goal to convince devs and publishers to release their games only on EGS. Exclusive games selling well and consumers buying games on EGS is mandatory to achieve this.

[UWSL]But their policy is to benefit the customer(*), Epic on the other hand tries to benefit the publisher.[/UWSL]
I've read some very interesting articles about Amazon's tactics to lower prices and force competitors to be bought by them or going out of business, but that's off-topic here. :)

Epic isn't having the impact on the market that the Amazon strategy would imply. Theyre carving out a small section for themselves sure, but not really taking down the incumbent. Their attempt at this strategy is going to end up with them being an also-ran because they won't be able to lose lead long enough to actually take down Steam or other stores.

This is not based on anything other than my memory and current observation.

Based on ERA thread(s) and searching for "epic store" and "epic games" on Twitter and Reddit (r/epicgamespc, r/gamedeals, r/games, r/indiangaming) there seems to be far less talk about the actual sale (coupons) this time than it used to be and people are mainly talking about wherever NBA is a good or bad free giveaway.

Again, I can be completely wrong, but it's what I remember and currently see.

I have listed all the codenames for which we do not know the store page.
Genshin Impact is not in there, because there is no codename (the two entries are called DLC 01 and DLC 02).

If you go here:

For instance, with Angelfish, we get these:

and

and the Freedom Cry DLC gives away that the game is likely Assassin's Creed IV:

With a bit of investigation, I think it is possible to figure out a few upcoming games, including freebies.

On a sidenote, I am missing a few codenames, because I have used data from only one of the databases ("items" and not "offers").

For instance, the codename Reykjavik is missing, and it is for War Thunder.

The thing about the "Past steam sales were 1000 times better" narrative is, that people didn't have massive backlogs and the whole digital library thing was new and exciting. Some bought digital versions of the games they already had as physical disks, but the majority just were new to digital gaming and couldn't believe the insane discounts.All those AAA games they didn't own could be bought for 50 to 90% off.

What I want to say: Unless Epic opens the floodgates, every new Mega sale will have diminishing returns, because the people who are willing to shop on EGS will have used those coupons on the games they want to buy and fewer and fewer big exclusives are coming to EGS.

I have gone through some of the codenames. There are many for which we only know the seller (company).

Epic Dev Test Account
  • Abyssinian -> a game by Frictional Games (Amnesia, SOMA, etc.)

  • Owlet -> Batman Arkham - Trilogy (already known, but no store page because it is a bundle)
  • Whiting -> possibly Assassin's Creed 2 Deluxe Edition
  • plus 4 other games
Ubisoft Entertainment
  • Larimar -> a game in a Gold Edition
  • plus 3 other games
Epic Games Publishing
  • Beef -> features a Starter Pack and Coins
  • plus 1 other game (Lasagne)
Sega of America
  • Amethyst -> Sonic Mania
  • plus 1 other game
Warner Bros.
  • Hydra -> includes a DLC.

10144720 CANADA INC and Business Corp Inc:

Annapurna Interactive:
  • Owl -> Solar Ash

Another Indie Studio Limited:
  • Camel -> Lost Castle / 失落城堡

Bigben Interactive:
  • Flamingo -> Paranoia Happiness is Mandatory

Dovetail Games:
  • TrainSim -> Train Sim World

Epic Games:
  • Poodle -> Twinmotion (application)

Gaijin Distribution KFT

What kind detective work are you doing? Where do the codenames come from and how were you able to tell what actual game each codename is?

Based on this tracker EpicData - Epic Games data tracker along with the seller names and some of the DLC names.
Sometimes, the name is there in plain text, which makes it easier.
Sometimes, the DLC gives the name away.
Other times, it is a bit of a guess, and that is why there are still a lot of unknown games.

Going through these old leaks from 2019, the following games are still missing from the EGS:
It is possible that some of them are tied to one of the codenames listed earlier.

If we look at these:

Epic Dev Test Account
  • Abyssinian -> a game by Frictional Games (Amnesia, SOMA, etc.)
  • Angelfish -> Assassin’s Creed® IV Black Flag™
  • Merganser -> Lego Batman Trilogy (already known, but no store page because it is a bundle)
  • Owlet -> Batman Arkham - Trilogy (already known, but no store page because it is a bundle)
  • Whiting -> possibly Assassin's Creed 2 Deluxe Edition
  • plus 4 other games
Ubisoft Entertainment
  • Larimar -> a game in a Gold Edition
  • plus 3 other games
Epic Games Publishing

  • Beef -> features a Starter Pack and Coins
  • plus 1 other game (Lasagne)
Then Anno 1503 and Rayman 3 would appear as 2 entries among:
  • either the 4 unknown entries (Bobolink, Dovekie, SP_, Valkyrie) from Epic Dev Test Account,
  • or the 3 unknown entries (Artemisia, Chartreux, Mau) from Ubisoft Entertainment.
Pyre has to be one of the 4 unknown entries from Epic Dev Test Account.

Moreover, now that I think about it, I suspect Fall Guys should be among the entries from "Epic Games Publishing".
Most likely the one with a Starter Pack and Coins, so codename Beef, even though there is no Starter Pack on Steam and the currency should be Crowns instead of Coins. Maybe there would be a change of DLC offer with the F2P version. I cannot think of any other unreleased game published by EGP with micro-transactions.

Epic has obfuscated one of the seller names which appeared earlier today.

Similarly, the DLC names are not helpful this time:
  • DLC 001, 002, etc.
  • In-game Currency 001, 002, etc.
  • Monthly Pass 001, 002, etc.
  • Skin 001, 002, etc.
Hopefully, it is not a new trend, and the timing is a mere coincidence. Hello, Tim.

The good piece of news is that the codename does not look random this time: "SQ-Bridge". Not sure if linked to:

Reference:

Larimar is the codename for an Ubisoft game in Gold Edition. It could be:

So I redeemed a free copy of NBA 2k21 from Epic, last time I opened my account was to redeem Subnautica. Apparently, downloads resets to 0% everytime you exit the launcher or turn off your PC. Game is 90gb I downloaded 20GB yesterday, I'm back at 0%. I cant with this fucking incompetence. Internet Download Manager resumes direct downloads a decade ago, why can't Epic do this? I should not complain since it's free. I guess I'll just redownload the game.

Some developers fell for Sweeney's snake-oil tactics and signed lifetime exclusivity deals. It was their choice and they have to live with it.

World War Z was a lifetime exclusivity.
This is a bit confusing because there was a moment last year or so in which quite a few people told me via Twitter that the game extended for an additional year the deal and they said so on an Interview, however no one provided me with such interview so, I don't know.

Edit: As for that lifetime list, I think some of those deals changed (in particular Ooblets and 10 Crowns are most likely coming at some point after the Early Access phase)

Yes it is free but you still should be getting a service that is competent for 2021.

I looked into A Knights Quest. It seems the publisher even forgot it exists. Here's one thing they had to say on Reddit:

Where have you guys been since 2015?
We actually spent years on a large-scale zelda-like videogame, stayed quiet as we were sworn to secrecy by our publishers. However near the end of development it was ultimately taken over and completed by another development studio. Since then we've gone back to our roots of fast paced shooty-slashy action and are working on the next huge project. We're about a year into it and will make some official announcements when we have enough content to show!

--------

I guess Curve really wanted that deal.

And now Dangerous Driving... look at this 2 year old post from Reddit

I remember the twitter (?) drama when Omen of Sorrow went they made the deal and made fun of people.

And a year later all the promised DLC character were not available.

Then again I only remember that game when people metion it.

Well, game is abandoned at this point, they were doing DD2 but no word since announcement.
Why support a game that will never make their guaranteed money back in 10 years.
just make another game that has no contract or COULD make another contract with new money.

Assuming they're still working on DD2, I wonder if they go back to the EGS well for it or not. That blog post shows some serious anti-steam sentiments, but it doesn't look like EGS really helped them any in any of those same areas except for money.

Remember when everyone was saying we'd get better games because 12%.would allow spending more time on game...
Add it to the list of lies around 12% helping consumers.
The smart devs used EGS as their live beta and released proper versions elsewhere after that, with a nice financial cushion to rest on. The ones not thinking ahead took the money without a post-EGS plan
