Hot damn. This have gotten EXTREMELY real in Cold Steel 4. I am rapidly approaching what is certainly the end day and (maybe?) Final dungeon. What a game. It doesn't redeem the insane pacing of this series but man when it gets good, it does get good.

I wonder what version has the most units available? Probably the 64GB one since it'll be cheaper and easier to produce.
It's strange that the activity feed doesn't show which version people have bought. Instead it shows that a deposit was made

Saw this tweet

In NA 55k units of the 512gb has been reserved while the 256gb model has 28k reservations

Good that it can be upgraded. NVMe 2230 drives are not cheap though, so if anyone is thinking of buying the cheaper model and upgrading storage, it really isn't worth it. Along with the fact that we don't know if the eMMC version of the Steam Deck is soldered onto the board.

Makes sense, they weren't going to have multiple motherboards for the Steam Deck.
yeah, pretty much

i'm assuming you'll have to unscrew quite a few bits to get to the slot ... and 2230 M.2s aren't exactly cheap ... but hey - future proofing, i guess ;)

The m.2 slot is probably buried under a heatsink, battery or fan. If it was easily accessible Valve would’ve put a little compartment on the back for easy access. They wanted to make this device as open as possible, remember.

Very quick: fear of social dumping and fear of local farms shutting down are 2 other main reasons for why people here are against EU. Norway is culturally very pro local farms and self reliance.

Ironically (?) it's the leftist parties here that are anti-EU, the conservative parties, right wing party and liberal parties are pro EU.

yup, pretty much this ... i imagine that's why they said it's not upgradable during the IGN interview ... as in "not easily upgradable"

Ok I got hit again with a DISK WRITE ERROR on Steam while trying to update a game. Is my drive dying or something? I could update a game elsewhere no problems. I can also install other games on said drive no problem.

It's possible...it's how I found out one of my SSD's was dying. Thankfully it was still under warranty so I got a replacement.

I found the issue. For some reason the manifest file (.acf) on Steam apps got renamed to a tmp.save. I dunno how or why. I just uninstalled the game and deleted said file. It is downloading again right now. I dunno if it will fuck something up though.

This is the second time in a month that I have a manifest file renamed to a acf.tmp.save. Any ideas why this might be happening? The only clue I have is that I moved those games around drives. At least one of them.

Now my dumb questions while I think about getting the Deck

You can preorder now paying 4 bucks, but when do you have to pay the full thing?

Can you pay with Steam wallet?
Once the distribution starts they will probably charge people. So maybe Oct/Nov maybe a little earlier. But based on the cancellation/refund language it looks like it won't happen for 30 days from today. At least.

All of what is happening now is still just reservations and not preorders so people shouldn't pay too much attention to the shipping months. There will be plenty of cancellations etc so most will jump up in queue.

Been really busy irl so I keep forgetting to visit the forum, but damn steamdeck looks hella promising.
Saw Lashman's tweet and looks like everyone's getting into it.
Hope to see it soon in my country as well.

Aside steamdeck, did I miss anything cool?

Been watching a lot of youtube benchmarks with 1050 and 1050 ti (roughly what is in the Deck) @720p.

Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro run really well. 60fps on all those old rigs with i3's from 2016 etc. So Elden Ring should perform really well on the Deck with larger open world and all. Its the same engine by the looks of it.

Also Bloodborne engine is identical to Dark Souls 3 so performance should be similar.

Handheld Bloodborne @60fps :so-good-blob:

Tho I have to say I am not gonna replay Sekiro on the Deck. It seems way too dangerous and is easily the quickest way to kill your new Deck. There will be nothing left of the triggers/bumpers/stick after you are done with Isshin lol. I can just see newbies cracking the Deck in half playing that game out of frustration.

Also watching some other popular future titles next year. Baldurs Gate 3 should run well. Its still EA too.

Halo Infinite should be fine since its also an Xbox one game.

And Starfield is gonna be the big one. Fallout 4 and 76 both really well optimized on PC so unless Todd did something crazy with their engine I think Starfield will be fine. But I think it will be better to stick to desktop with big titles like that. They will be a buggy mess at launch and the immersion is just better with high hz monitor.

But yea the 800p target should handle all AAA games out there just fine. The CPU/Ram is good too and kind of future proof so very ambitious indie games releasing on Steam in 3-4 years will still be great on current Deck imo. And by then Valve will most likely release an iteration of it that is a little lighter + more storage + possibly stronger/faster.

The one iteration I want Valve to do in the future is do a 120hz screen. I know its probably very battery draining but I would much rather pay an extra 100$ for a 120hz screen and bigger battery. Unlike say the bs Nintendo is pulling with larger OLED screen. The Deck is rocking a lot of beef for hardware and many old/indie games would easily push past 60fps @ 720p. Stuff like Spelunky 2 and Hollow Knight would be incredible at high 120hz on a handheld. Again I don't know much about handheld screens/batteries/thermals but Valve did do 120hz+ panels with the Index so their hardware team should be more than capable of pulling it off. Maybe like 2 years from now once the component prices come down.

Sorry to say but Fallout 4 is not optimized well at all. Bethesda has lots of issues with it's creation engine.

That game suffers from frame drops like crazy in areas with high density buildings/objects.

It came out in 2015 and I still get major FPS and stuttering issues on a 3080 and i7 8700k.

Yea by well optimized I just meant not as demanding on lower end hardware as most may believe. There will be FPS issues for sure regardless playing on Deck or not. Bethesda games will be all over the place but I think very playable/enjoyable. I would play them on PC/Monitor/M/KB instead.

Huh? Huh!? The Steam Deck is open hardware? It runs Linux? It has a desktop mode that uses KDE? Pinch me.

So that means much greater support for Linux gaming across the board? And certainly more polish for KDE in the long run, as a bonus.... With a popular device running Linux, game devs will finally have clear incentive to either release native versions of games and libraries or contribute to Wine/Proton. Launchers too. Perhaps a few adjacent desktop apps will be affected as well. The snowball potential is huge, for games and for the computing ecosystem at large.

I was not expecting this. You don't expect good news from major corporations in 2021. But I'll take it.

As reported by [UWSL]VGC[/UWSL], a new discovery by dataminer Steve Moser has revealed images of the PS5 DualSense controllers and artwork of Ghost of Tsushima in the app’s data. A logo for something called ‘N Games’ has also been found, suggesting that this will be the final name of the service. Additionally, Moser has also uncovered a logo of a shark fin and claims that the project’s working title is ‘Shark’.

With the announcement of the Steam Deck, there are some major concerns that are brought up constantly by Users and the Press.

I want to tackle two of these:
1. "This handheld can't play the most recent AAA Games"
2. "Steam OS is Linux-based most of these games won't run on it."

For the first argument: Unless Steam Deck completely crushes all expectations and digs into the hardcore AAA userbase (questionable, because it is a handheld), it probably caters to the Nintendo and, of course, the current Steam userbase. Nintendo's flagship is the Switch and any game that a Nintendo user is happy with, will be playable on the Deck.
And then there are the current Steam users.
2021 is half-over and only 7 games from this year are in the Top 100 and NONE can be classified as "AAA", only 3 from those 7 as "AA" Rest 4 are Indie.
The 1- to 3-year-old games take a third of the top 100 with 35 games releasing in the last 3 years
The 4- to 10-year bracket is the biggest with over half of the games in it (53)
And lastly, we have 5 Games that are older than 10 years.
I think for most Steam users and the potential Nintendo userbase, the graphical power of the Deck will be fine.

For the second argument:

36 Games in the Top 100 have native Linux Support
42 games are "mostly fine" with Proton (possible fiddling involved)
12 games are blocked because of the Anticheat system they are using. Valve already stated that they try to work with these Games/Developers/Anticheat developers to make it possible to play the game with Proton.
2 are unknown (not enough proton user feedbacks)
and 2 are incompatible with Proton.
