A new patch is out. It seems to fix a lot of stuff about impractical STR weapons and incantations.

I also had problems with dual-wielding estocs that look like they might be resolved.
The biggest surprise here is how complete those notes are lol

Have you heard of "Let me solo her"? A guy that helps players struggling with a certain boss towards the end who's not very nice.

yeah that player is amazing, it's already a hard boss and it gets more health and resistances as the host is summoning cooperators, also the amount of flasks charges are halved.

The most important thing I see in these patch notes is the Carian Retaliation thing, that was just stupid in MP.

The Adula's Moonblade changes I have to try in-game. I just recently started to use that a lot, I hope the damage nerf isn't too severe.

I like the number of sorcery and incantation buffs, there are just far too many that never made any sense to use. Probably they don't go far enough in most cases.
Some of them are just stupid by design. Like the light spell -- using up a slot just to cast light is already a huge deal, so the spell should at least be brighter than torches and last forever. As is, it's not something anyone will ever use for any non-meme purpose (and there are many spells and incantations like that).

yep, I always just use the latern. Tried the light spell and found it pretty useless indeed.

Confirms that the multi-hit illusory walls were a bug, and it also looks like the murder-dogs are slightly less murderous now. (Incidentally, this channel is full of weird minutiae about From games. If you're interested in that sort of stuff, I'd recommend checking it out.)

It isn't. I hardly see the difference. I didn't jot down any numbers, but I'd be surprised if the nerf is more than 10%.

On the plus side, the frost wave hits very consistently now, I'm pretty sure some of the Palace Approach Albinaurics escaped it before due to slight differences in elevation.

Darkmoon Greatsword still sucks, same as before, with its frostwave often going way over the enemies' heads when there are differences in elevation. Checks out, since the patch notes don't mention that aspect of it. I expect it will have its turn. At least the buff is faster to apply.

The dual-estoc problem is partly fixed: I had problems chaining attacks after a roll attack, which I can no longer reproduce. The normal combo chain is still reset immediately if you move, though, which makes sense but feels bad.

The performance fixes they did in this patch are amazing. I can finally play at 1080p and it doesn't stutter like crazy anymore.
yet EAC still refuses to launch most times on Linux. its weird... not a problem on the Deck, mind you, just on my laptop. At least that thing is easily circumvented. just a shame because i made a new character free of any cheats that I could use online if I wanted.

Never had a problem with EAC on Kubuntu (with my previous system)

Originally couldn't launch EAC on my new Arch (EndeavourOS) system, but ER worked fine without it. In the end I found that I had AMD drivers mixed into my NVidia system, and that was the cause; all has worked like a charm since then.

Here's a link to the problem I had:

Hope that helps.

Interesting. I didn't notice a difference on my PC (but that would be unlikely unless they removed the 60 FPS cap, since it was already hitting that consistently), but I did feel like it ran significantly more smoothly on the Deck than I remembered. I chalked it up to area differences, but maybe it was (also) the patch.

For reference, I am running GTX 1060, i7-8750H, and 16 GB RAM, so nowadays it's a lower-end PC. The game is installed on SSD. Up until patch 1.04, I had to run the game at 720p and even then the game was hovering between 40-60 fps with constant, non-stop stuttering. VRR display helped a bit with the lower framerate, but the stuttering was annoying. If the game wasn't as good as it is then I would not play it in that state. Now after the patch the game was running at mostly stable 60 fps at 720p with almost no stuttering, so I bumped the resolution to 1080p and now it runs at 50-60 fps. Looks smooth enough thanks to VRR.

Thanks! I run Manjaro, so, also Arch-based. I heard about the AMD drivers bug before - but when I checked, I didnt find them installed (even tho my laptop does have AMD graphics on board in addtion to the dedicated Nvidia GPU). So it must be something else... and EAC does run... just only every now and then, as it pleases ;)

I started yesterday. Since I don't really mind losing the online stuff that much, I modded out chromatic aberration and vignette, had to disable EAC to do that.
Have fun =)

Well, for me the online stuff (that is mostly the synchronous MP, though the messages are nice too) is 60% of the reason I play these games. But I think it's a strength of the Souls games that they appeal to different people on different ways.

Yeah, for me it's just the messages that I'm losing which is a bummer but I can't look at the game without getting a headache if the CA is on, so I really don't have many options here. It's a shame they haven't included a CA toggle. I even sent feedback though Bamco's support channel but a lot of good that did. :blobweary:

Noticed that if I have steam input on, the lock on target switching is somewhat busted. Disabling steam input for the game fixes it, so something gets lost in the translation there. Googled around a bit and saw suggestions to adjust the deadzone, change the deadzone shape, switch right stick to joystick mouse, none really helped. Downside to not using steam input is that I can't use the screenshot button in the series controller. :minos_sad:

Interesting, I'm using a Steam controller (so by necessity Steam Input), and the target switching works as expected. Maybe the behavior under Steam input is optimized/tested for the SC.

And yeah, the lack of really easy to do graphics options / features is a bummer. Same for 21:9, which the game basically already does but they don't want to show you for some reason. Or >60 FPS (though that one is at least marginally more dev/testing work than a CA toggle or 21:9, so it's slightly more understandable)

The weird thing about that target lock thing is that the right stick works perfectly otherwise for camera. So I'd guess it's something to do with the "outer ring" or outer dead zone settings or something. I haven't looked at it more, just been playing. Lost so much time waiting, time to catch up. :D

One thing I really wish the game had was some kind of inventory page for most recent pick ups, or newest items, something like that.

Also a question. I bought two Notes from a merchant. Do the notes stay in my inventory after I go and get/do whatever the note describes? Or do I have to keep track of that myself.
Should I take notes about the notes? :grinning-face:

You can sort the inventory pages for recent but afaik there is no way to have it on just one page :-/

Weird thing. After playing couple of days without Steam input, I decided to see if I could do something to the issue I mentioned.
But it seems to work perfectly now. I even loaded both the default gamepad template and the official settings from bamco, just as I did before, and they both seem to work just fine now, with zero modifications from me.
As far as I know there hasn't been an update to the game or Steam that would have changed anything, so it's very strange indeed.
Only thing I can think of is that playing directly with xinput saved some kind of config file somewhere, and that fixed it?
I'm actually more curious now than I was before and will do some minor tests.

Yeah, really just wish there was just an (optional) extra tab you could default to that was just every item in most recent order.
I have to always remember to look at the icon when I'm picking up new stuff so I don't need to blindly look for it.

Been trying to farm but can't seem to find a good reliable spot. I need 70 000 per level now and it takes a moment.
Have you tried Mohgwyn Palace? That seems to be the most talked-about spot for easy rune acquisition.

Ah no havent tried that, I'm now at Dragonbarrow but those little motherfuckers kill me way too often.

I think I might not be long enough in the game for Mohgwyn Palace. Still have so many places to beat.

You can go there fairly easy, after you defeat Godrick.

Its fairly easy to do:

in written:

defeat Godrick
find Varre at Rose Church, west Liurnia
do 3 invasions
go to Inhibition Church to soak the cloth with blood of a Finger maiden
go back to Varre
use the item he gives you
sprint up the hillside as shown in the video
shoot the bird across the cliff, watch it fall down to its death, get runes (in the latest patch the bird wont always go over the cliff, its a bit more of a "do it from the right spot" lottery)
rest at the site of grace
rinse + repeat

there is a talisman that boosts rune acquisition, the golden scarab, which you get from the Abandoned Cave in Caelid, as well as Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot which can be crafted (or bought in a small quantity from Patches)

I still haven't found that one greatsword that has the moveset I like. Could look it up, but not going to. So I'm using a boring long sword that has the same moveset, more or less.

Overall I'd say I feel like I've found way fewer full armor sets in chests or whatever than what I would have expected.

At the beginning of the game, it feels like there is less of everything, coming from the Dark Souls games -- I felt that way for armor sets, spells, and even weapons.

In fact, there's more of everything. It's just spread over a massive game.

different topic: given how sekiro is currently on sale: would i like that game? given that i really really like elden ring, but a lot of my enjoyment comes from the open world and the ability to outlevel the shit out of the content to make it easier? i think you cant do that in sekiro, correct?

Either I'm no good at exploring or there isn't enough variety in armors. I'm like 50 hours in and I'm still wearing the same armor I got during the first 15 hours because nothing else gives me better stats. Maybe you're right about the fact that there is a lot of items, just spread over a massive game, but I still wish there was actually more variety because unlike Dark Souls games it feels like my character doesn't change his appearance. I also have the same complaint about single-handed slash swords. I had a str-dex-faith build and I was wearing the same sword I found at the very beginning of the game and I just slowly upgraded it because I didn't find anything better. I regularly kept finding one-handed slash swords, but they were either somehow worse than what I already had or they required int stat. In fact, I found like 3 one-handed slash swords that required int and none that would scale with faith, or just str-dex that would be actually decent. Like I said, maybe that's on me. I gave up on that build not that long ago and I rerolled my stats and just equipped a moonveil. The game suddenly became much easier.

Also a question, I kept reading mentions about multiple endings and that people at some point backup their saves so that they don't have to complete the whole game multiple times. I don't want to dive into spoilers so I ask you kind metamates, at what point of the game should I backup my save?

I can see this happening -- there are a lot of armour pieces, but I feel like their stat influence has been de-emphasized in general. I didn't actively notice this as much since I generally play fashion souls in terms of armor anyway.

It's mostly linear and instead of leveling up, you gain more max HP from beating bosses. In terms of difficulty, it's in a weird spot. Its initial learning curve is one of the nastiest I've ever seen. If you can tough it out and come to grips with the game's mechanics, it becomes much easier (maybe the easiest of From's modern games), but getting there is a real struggle.

It's a great game, but based on what you're saying, I suspect you won't enjoy it.

I definitely felt like I was finding fewer armor sets than most people. I found maybe 3 or 4 that looked armor-y enough and had stats that weren't awful.

There are a lot of cool looking sets, but I dunno where they are lol.

It felt like the further in you go, the more sets get thrown your way :)

I went for quite a while with my starting set before I got something better ... and then couldnt wear it because of stats....and then didnt wanna wear it because it made me look horrible :p
but yeah, the game eventually gives you plent of options. more side-grades than upgrades tho.

I basically did it like Durante and went the fashion-souls route, just wearing what I thought looked nice ;)

Hey did you know that grab attacks continue to suck ass?

I've been doing the fashion souls route for the past few games and here's no different, which is exactly why I'm sad I haven't really found full sets that much. I started naked wretch as is tradition and for a longest time I had no pants because none would drop from enemies at all. :grinning-face: I think the first full set I got was the Radahn soldier set as drops and used that for a while with the Crimson Hood as my head piece, looked very nice. And aside from that I think I've found the Blue Cloth set and the Carian Knight set, which I'm wearing now. Might switch back to the Crimson Hood though and keeping the rest of the Carian set.

I mean of course I have couple things available through merchants, but who wants to buy their armor, pfft. Preowned armor is the best armor. If it doesn't smell like someone might have died in it, what good is it really.

I really enjoyed Sekiro in the beginning, but the more I played the less I liked it. Didn't gel with the combat in the end, I just have always sucked at parrying.

I felt that, comparatively with other DS games, there are fewer armor sets, especially when you consider the size of the whole game comparatively with the others.
On the other hand, the number of weapons felt significantly bigger than other DS games although the amount of swords is too damn high.

I found the Claymore I was expecting to have that moveset I wanted. Now I'm not sure I want it anymore. Hours and hours with a faster weapon does that I guess. But the increased damage is pretty nice to have. Gonna keep it in use for now. But also got some new curious regular swords from the ✋Manor. Too many fingers. Probably someone's nightmare, and someone's fetish.
