Enjoy, I guess...

(yes, that's pure black on both)
That's kinda surprising as QD-OLED is supposed to be per-pixel emissive like regular OLED, so it's kinda hard to understand why it looks like there is some kind of backlight here.

It's not backlight, Dell used bad anti-glare coating.
Monitor is still pure black in an unlit room, but the second you turn on your lights, you get IPS levels of contrast.
🤦‍♂️

The contrast levels do not change, you just will not have the deep blacks in a (well lit) room.
It's a weird decision tho.

that is a really strange choice to mess with your expensive monitor.

I mean, having crystal clear reflections is also not great.
That said, personally I almost always play in the dark anyway (which is one reason I really don't like IPS for gaming).

I have light behind my monitor when I am playing for longer sessions. Reflections and glare won't be an issue for me. This coating is a weird decision but it's not that big of a deal and weirdly blown out of proportion. Kinda like the Deck screen.

Downunder.
I have a need for a sound card with optical input (TOSLINK) which can accept multichannel (Dolby Digital 5.1 minimum), preferably PCIe, but I can accept USB as long as the form factor is compact. Not looking to spend an outrageous amount of money, so probably $50 AUD tops.

I've been looking at a few refurbished Sound Blasters on eBay which will do the job, but I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for these kinds of hardware.

I could buy a 3080Ti FE or a 3090Ti FE at their MSRP, is it worth or not now?
I waited two years to find something at an honest price but with the 4xxx right behind the door i'm conflicted...

I am not expecting good availability and prices.
I am kinda in the same spot, but I am still going to wait but I am also on the verge of buying a used 3060 TI to be a bit more modernly equipped.

Yeah that's the point honestly
I don't expect good availability, let alone prices like it was with the 3xxx, so I would like to put an end at this agony. There is also the fact that if I end up with nothing available at launch, and even month later because I literally can't try to stay 24/7 ready to snag a card in a 10 seconds window, well...it will be a never ending loop with a newer architecture always around the corner
I was always strongly against the waiting game, because there will always be something more powerful coming sooner or later but also I never buyed a top tier card at the end of an architecture life cycle. Its probably also the fact that dropping 2 grand for a 3090Ti is an hell of expense so its always better to think about it 2-3 times more than usual

I think I may have found the wireless mechanical keyboard that matches my specific needs.

The reason I didn't find it before is because it's apparently brand new. At least all the reviews are from a few days ago.
It's like it's built specifically for me.

Well, I don't love that it has a built in battery instead of some AA or AAA slots so I could just use my eneloops, but looks like the battery lasts pretty long if you don't use the backlight.
I also don't love that it's been squashed vertically, so the function row is right on top of the number row. I would prefer if it had a little gap there.
But other than that, it has everything I need. Full 100% ISO layout, wireless, 4 extra keys on top of the numpad. Literally exactly what I wrote here some months back. :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes:

The switches are not hot swappable, which is a bummer, but can't have it all. They are Kailh Choc V2 Blue, Red or Brown. As far as I understand, they are compatible with Cherry MX-mount keycaps. So the visual customization options are there as well.

I don't love that it's €179.99 since I'm kind of broke still, but I'll bookmark it for future reference.

I think it's time for me to buy a new monitor. I have a 4 year old ASUS ROG Swift PG278QR, but there is what I think is screen burn in on it. Judging by the position of the line and the squiggly shapes that run above it, I think it's from my bookmark bar in Chrome. It's been there for a while I think I first noticed it when I was playing Animal Crossing on my Switch about a year ago. I don't know if it's actually gotten worse, but it is starting to feel more obtrusive.

I've read that you can use FreeSync with Nvidia cards now, which seems to be much cheaper, and I'd rather not spend $800CAD+ again(which is what my last one cost). Does anyone have any recommendations for something comparable? I have a 3070 if that matters. I'm not looking for anything bigger than 27-28" and I don't want a curved screen as I watch movies/TV on it as well.

Oh, and are there any downsides to using a FreeSync monitor with a Gsync card?

These hot-swappable switches is like the iem/headphone rabbit hole all over again. At least it's cheaper. (maybe)
It is not. (But like with headphones, there's plenty of great not-expensive stuff out there.)

I think the absolute highest end with keyboards is about 600$. And that's talking about very rare GBs. The cumulative costs for a keyboard can be higher, but switches are generally cheaper, and most mods don't require a ton of money, just time.

The ceiling for headphones is a lot higher, and those are easily available headphones which you can find on any store front, pretty much.

In other news, I bought a 3080Ti finally. Good price too, 1099€, from an official seller here in Italy. My 1080Ti served me well, it'll always be in my hearth but at 3400x1440 it's not enough anymore sadly
Have fun with the 4xxx series guys, I'll not be part of the crazyness that will likely happen again with the release of the new gpu, see you at least for a 5xxxti or even later
What a wild ride, I'm very happy rn! It's been exactly 1 year, tomorrow, that I started upgrading my main pc and finally I finished it. It's been quite a journey but I don't regret anything, in 20 years of this hobby this has been for sure the most difficult times where I've been to buy components and such but ehi, I've a story to tell at least.
There is passion and dedication involved, I builded from scratch an inverted build by carefully choosing every component and every aspect of the build. It may not be perfect, it's not for sure, but it comes from a lot of work and studying. I'm proud of it, that's the beauty of pc gaming tbh if you can embrace it (or the worst part of it if you can't stomach any of this thing!)

Congrats on the GPU. I think the 4000 series are going to have insane power. And also insane PSU requirements.

It’s a can of worms I’m scared of Nvidia opening because the last thing we need in a cost of living and energy crisis is expensive power hungry GPUs.

Personally I’m gonna try and ride my 3080 out for as long as I can, and I think you made the right call to give the 4000 series a miss.

Watched a Gamers Nexus video about GPU power spikes. The case for lots of people's random system instabilities being down to GPUs randomly spiking to several hundred watts above the average is pretty open and shut. Everyone is going to need MUCH bigger and better PSUs for the 4000 series unless you already have like a 1k PSU.

I think their testing also showed that some motherboards were good at dealing with those massive spikes, so I think it might also come down to getting a good motherboard and PSU combo, which might alleviate the need to require crazy high wattage on the PSU alone.
The actual power draw of those new GPUs is also still not confirmed and I could see the final specs being quite a bit lower than what some rumours are saying.

Nobody should even skimp on PSU wattage either way. Always leave a 200 Watts in reserve, it's not like the system will use it constantly.

A local retailer have a long week hardware sale. But it's kind of sad how with the discounts the GPU prices are at the point they were when they launched nearly 2 years ago.

Yesterday I was so close to jumping on that LG C1 48" at $800 (which it still is in the US across all sellers), I did even more research on it. I think with my desk I would have just barely enough space to truly enjoy it, but the few downsides of an OLED are still enough to push me on the 'no' side. Had it been a C2 42" at that price, I probably would have gone for it (due to the smaller size)...

No joke I've been waiting for OLED tech to be viable for more than 15 years before even the first commercial OLED displays...

Never skimp on PSU, but when the spikes are getting to be 2 or 3 times the rated wattage, it's starting to get pretty nuts.
I remember years ago there were so many people on hardware forums saying 'always skimp on wattage'. Meanwhile I've spent the last 20 years always buying the premium PSUs at high wattages. I may actually have to buy a new PSU next build, though, with wattages getting so crazy. :/

As someone who did jump on a 48" C1 as a monitor, I am still completely torn. It's insanely huge, when I'm sitting at the desk I just use the middle part of the screen like an UItrawide, and just move back further to actually game. I'm wavering on if I will actually keep it, or just find a good monitor instead and not have OLED...

Don't think ill buy another OLED again. Had mine for 3ish years and its now got some annoying burn-in. Has a few bands across the bottom of the screen, most likely from Rimworld type games with an info bar. Could be News channels or the cricket score band. Bit annoying but its not too bad, the worst bit is there are 3 tear/scratch looking marks in the middle of the screen. No idea what its from, maybe a game. Mostly shows up when the picture is a red colour but it shows often enough for it to get on my nerves.

Is anyone else using a 48" C1 as their primary PC display? If so what are your current thoughts on it. Or did anyone try this and switch to something else?

I've been looking at this Inno3d 3070

But I don't know much about Inno3d. Anyone here has expirience with them ?

E: There's also this gigabyte. I'm not sure which of the two I should get since any other option seems to be to expensive.

Inno3d is fine. But that Gigabyte at the EUR 620 (or EUR 806) is a much better deal.
I ended up getting the Gigabyte, since the Inno wasn't discounted anymore (the Inno was 599 when I saw it).

Should get it soon. (Tho, with how hot is getting these days I'm not playing many intensive games).

I could have bought a 3080 FE at MSRP 750 € today, it was still available 20 minutes after the drop at NB.de (normally sold out in seconds to bots).
But after waiting nearly two years, I can wait a few months more. Plus most of my gaming time is now on Steam Deck and not on my 2070 powered Gaming PC.

For a while there I was also planning to wait for the next round, but Elden Ring didn't run quite as well as I wanted with the 1070 so as soon as the prices were down a bit I jumped at a 3070.

Now, looking at all the rumors about power and stuff, I fully expect the new cards to be quite pricey again. And with some many hardware products launching this year, and practically everyone being at TSMC, I wonder what kind of volume they can actually manufacture, will the cards be super hard to get again? Who knows.

Well got my GPU. I doubt I'll be able to test stuff until it gets a bit colder.

That said I can finally enter the BIOS :wd_happy:

There's one thing I don't understand. This mystical DLDSR, in the 3D configuration where you can select the multipliers you want it displays the wrong resolution. Has this always been like that ?

E: Since I had to open my PC I used the chance to use my air compressor to remove the thin layer of dust that was inside the pc. Feels good seeing the inside so clean.

Alright so I've had my RTX 3080 for about a week now and last night for the second time my PC just randomly shut down and turned back on. Both times it happened while I was playing FFVIIR although I've also played it plenty of times without any issues. Doesn't look like anything's crashing or overheating although I've turned on logging in Afterburner to make sure the next time it happens. But yeah, everything just goes black instantly and then the PC boots back up immediately so it really looks like the power is just cutting off. The first time it happened I assumed the house got a power dip or a breaker had tripped or something but nothing else in the house was affected.

My specs:

CPU: Intel Core i9-12900K
Cooler: iCue H100i Elite Capellix
Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix Z690-A Wifi D4
RAM: 32GB Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR-3200
4 SSDs (2x 2.5" and 2x m.2)
PSU: Corsair RM850x
oh and I have a bunch of RGB fans in my Corsair case although I don't imagine that matters here.

I'm thinking either the card itself has spikes that the PSU can't handle or maybe the system overall is pulling so much that there isn't enough wiggle room left to account for them, right? Do I need to buy a new PSU already? :confounded-face: Other than making sure to log everything while playing a demanding game, is there anything else I can do to confirm whether it's due to transient power spikes?

I have an old Corsair 1000W I could swap in to see if the issue persists but it's over 10 years old at this point (and has powered my last two PCs full time) so I'm hesitant to use it in my new PC despite it never giving me any issues...

I thought about it but I'd have to look into it a bit more and see if there's any risks involved. From what I've seen so far it sounds like it wouldn't necessarily fix the issue entirely so it might not be a permanent solution either way.

Yeah I also have a 1080 monitor.
Yes. I ended up fully deleting my drivers (with DDU) and reinstalling and now it shows up correctly.
I went back and found the post where I saw this recently.

edit: Yeah, that might be it. Turning off DLDSR, moving NCP to my main monitor, closing and relaunching it makes it show the correct 4K resolution next to 2.25x. But if I turn it on, close NCP and relaunch it (on the same monitor) it's back to 2880x1620 lol. Just gonna chalk this one up to NCP being weird, I guess.

I'd also wager a guess that hdmi handshakes and such can have an effect on which resolutions you get. So when you boot your pc and your 1080p monitor isn't turned on, you guys would probably have a better success rate at getting the correct resolutions to show up. Maybe.

Similar and maybe related behavior to how GPU's initialize the connected displays is that sometimes I would get bios in one monitor, sometimes in another.
These days I never get these issues however since my monitor is actually always off and not even connected anymore. I literally never use it so just saves me the headache. :grinning-face:

Temptation to brute force Switch emulation rising. I guess I could not buy a case and keep my shitty NZXT, just get the CPU beast and a cooler for it to not go nuclear on me. And for the 123 of the case I can buy a shit load of fans :thinking-face:
Or maybe a downgrade on the CPU ? 315 sure is something.

I have a question though. Morally more than grey I guess.
Let's imagine I break the CPU while installing it, is there a way to send it back to Amazon like I just changed my mind about my purchase or will they be more intelligent than that ?
Not that I plan to nuke the CPU or enjoy being lax with refunds, but a fucking 300+ euros CPU is making me sweat BULLETS bigger than my balls.

Last time I had this issue it was my 5 year old 850W EVGA PSU that was failing. It would fail on very specific games and very specific scenarios in the games, or under sustained heavy load. It was under warranty but EVGA's warranty service cost a lot to take advantage of (not to mention they didn't package it well shipping a refurbished one back to me...)

I had my 3080 for a while at that point. It was the PSU that was failing, nothing else had changed.

Looking for some advice on a lowend pc upgrade.
Have a possible deal on an i5 6500, b150 board and 16gb ddr4 ram for $60 - is this worth the time and effort to upgrade an in i53570/16 gb ddr3?
It'd be for use in my htpc (old games, media, and emulators).

In my case the RTX 3080 is the new change. I've been using the PSU without issue since January. Doesn't mean it can't be going bad but for now I'm working on the assumption that it just can't handle the card. I already bought a 1200W replacement (and some white cables to go with it because I refuse to let this ruin the white theme of my PC lmao) but I think I'll hold off until next week-end to install it. I bought them right away cause they were on sale but I wanna take another week to experiment and try to make sure the issue is due to transient spikes.

I'm reinstalling Cyberpunk rn. Running it with ray-tracing on should be the easiest way to tax the card and try to recreate the problem lol. If it turns out to be something else then I can just return the unopened replacement. Plus, I have 2 weeks of vacation starting next friday so at least if something goes wrong installing the new PSU then that will leave me plenty of time to get things sorted out without any stress.

Uh, looks like the 5800x on amazon for 300 is a third party seller. I have 0 faith in those.

Tired, I keep trying to find a moderately powerful upgrade path for my 2600x / 2600 super but it never works out.

Summarized my case, I think. I will spoiler my part list to not make too big a post.

Here is my actual PC -

CPU
AMD RYZEN5 2600X Socket AM4 4.25Ghz+19MB

CPU Cooler
Wraith Prism ?

Motherboard
MSI B450 Tomahawk AMD Socket AM4

Memory
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16Go (2x8Go) DDR4 3000MHz C15 XMP 2.0

Storage
Samsung 860 EVO - 1 To

Video Card
Geforce RTX 2060 Super

Case
NZXT H500 - Black

Power Supply
Corsair RM550x v2 - Gold

Monitor
LG 27GL850-B

I have historically have had BAD temp with this case, so one of the goal would be to buy something that has good airflow. And a good CPU cooler.
I would also like to buy a new CPU to get generally better perfs and maybe get better results in emulating recent systems like the Switch. Getting a new Ryzen would spare me the expense of a new board, which is appreciated.

I was aiming a little high with a 5800x coupled with a chromax black and a bequiet 500dx, but if I can get 90% of the perfs for less I'm super cool with it.

I saw GamersNexus implying that a base 5600 is good enough ? But yeah in France the 5600x is broadly priced the same. Maybe a bequiet cpu cooler to save a couple dollars and maybe get RGB lightning (I am ashamed to admit I got accustomed to the pretty colors of the Wraith prism).

It's difficult for me to know where the line is between 'I want to buy shit to feel alive', which is obviously ridiculous, and 'I have to buy a CPU now or risk having to buy a mobo if I drag my feet', which makes a lot of sense to me. I guess I could simply wait, but the next upgrade will be brutal.

Ideally I would love to add a NVMe and another SSD, but they certainly adds up too much for my target budget.

Any input appreciated, but let me light up the didamangi signal

I have a 5600x and it has been good for yuzu and ryujinx. But I haven't tried all the games.

There's also a rumor that AMD's going to make some Zen4 CPU's for AM4 socket with the usual DDR4 support. I'm personally very interested if that turns into a real product. Would make the initial AM4 purchase quite a superb and long lasting investment.

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor (€239.90 @ Amazon France)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition 57.3 CFM CPU Cooler (€50.90 @ Infomax Paris)
Case: be quiet! Pure Base 500DX ATX Mid Tower Case (€111.51 @ Amazon France)
Total: €402.31

Lowering my demands, I get some interesting price. But then again I had my power supply since 2019 and it's not exactly a beast. Maybe a new one ?
If not evident I reiterate that the goal is to do a nice upgrade while I still can keep my mobo, but at the same time while it's a moderate upgrade I don't do one every Monday, so I try to squeeze the max out of it. Like the power supply, I'm fucking alright with mine, but if I buy a new case, maybe I would be better off starting on a better base (and I don't expect to be excited at the idea of changing PSU once the case is set up).

Is the Hyper 212 a good fit for this CPU and maybe later a better one ? Or should I really go top end ?

I don't have much experience with CPU coolers. I currently use a pretty big one from Noctua in my current case. It's the Noctua NH-U12A, cost around twice what you currently selected. It's super quiet and also pretty good at cooling my 3800X. Basically 40 degree idle.
One thing that you need to take care with these giant Noctua coolers is their size. I have a large Fractal Define R6, so ample space there. The case itself is built to be quiet, so not optimal for air flow, but combined with the quiet Noctua fans, it ends up being super quiet.
