Some stats:

Elden Ring crossed 400k Steam purchased reviews, no discount yet, big milestone.
Spidey crossed 20k Steam purchased reviews with no discount.
GoW is very close to 40k Steam purchased reviews, only so far with a 20% discount.

Wait, what do you mean by 'purchased review'?

Again, contrary to what you might think by reading this, I have no reason to doubt the dev as a whole, I’m just not convinced by the whole picture.
My opinion is that the dev tried to be too clever without properly understanding the systems he was playing with. Every indie developer gets spammed with review key requests and they all know to just ignore it (or hire an agency which takes care of this stuff if they can afford to). This guy thought "Ha ha let's send fake keys to the demo so that I can make a Twitter thread later patting myself on the back for how clever I was". Except now we have the Twitter thread and he's the one who ends up looking silly IMO.

This would not have been a mystery if he had bothered to check the Steam Curator page.

Valve allows this because they understand that people can buy games at different places or on different platforms. Curator reviews do not contribute to the positive/negative rating of a game so there is no requirement for the game being reviewed to be owned on Steam.

Fortunately for him, nobody actually cares about Steam curators so these negative reviews won't matter at all but also, none of this would have happened if he hadn't sent out bogus keys in the first place.

And then he ends it with the whole "every key sold on grey market sites is stolen". Yea dude, nobody actually believes that.

I can believe this curator shit, right. But then the dev mentions grey sites and how they are full of those keys and something doesn't add up. There are usually not one or two or even ten keys available on these shops, so tell me, if what you say is right, why you sent hundreds of free keys to random solicitors ?
This.

But Valve obviously should be banning these curators and all meme curators too. They make whole system mess for those who try to find curators.

When Soul Hackers 2 works on Steam Deck, it's a great experience. The hard part is getting lucky with the game not crashing on boot and having music correctly play. I hope Valve and Atlus make sure Persona 5 Royal is verified at launch.

I'm surprised that Steam keys make up such a large portion of sales. When accounting for key reviews in those games you mentioned, they make up 23% to 29% of all reviews (and presumably sales). Valve leaves a lot of money on the table for the network effect of getting people on Steam. It likely pays off in the long term, but many companies wouldn't do that.

99% of the curator pages should be deleted

Example.. No reviews. just random description of the games. copy pasted over 4 curator pages, Even games not released til 2023,

The curators "review bombing" the game in question are definitely the same person(s).

All of the curator groups were created on the same day September 17th, 2021 (with 1 created on September 19th, 2021) and they all have almost the same # of followers 20K-21K.

Valve should take another pass over the curator system.
*Allow folks to completely block curators without exceptions and without having to block/ignore 100
*Allow folks to block any curators they do not follow
*Increase the number of blocks and follows you can have for curators
*increase the number of titles curators can list
*Make changes to the curator connect system around keys and redemptions
*Add a flag/report system
*In talking with others. I think they could have a few high level tags for curators. For example, is the curator going to review, inform, list, or some combo.

There are curators who provide helpful information like Games at risk of removal and some of the language update curators, but they are not reviewing, just providing information. Then there are curators who list games with specific tags or genres, they are just listing games for folks sifting through the store.

System could be beneficial, but it has a lot of issues needing resolved.

Steam curators have the same issue as forums - both are good and useful concepts that need at least some basic moderation which Valve isn't really providing. Community reviews on the store frontpage had the same issue but looking at it now, it seems like it's gone, haven't even noticed.

And here are two good curators I really enjoy, one is digging up hidden gems (emphasis on 'hidden', it's not the usual 'hey, have you played Hollow Knight?') and the other is Rob Fearon's (Death Ray Manta) curator with plenty of obscure twin-sticks recommendations:

They wouldn't do it if it didn't pay off for them.

Customer buys ER PC on a shop outside of Steam, they receive a Steam key, they create a Steam account for the first time, they see all the games Steam have, they feel it's more convenient to buy directly on Steam even if it sometimes costs more.

Are there any mods that let you play as Thomas the Tank Engine? That's when you know the mod community has reached the full modding potential of a game.

And the kickstarter is live.
Signed on for one physical copy each. Its kind of weird signing on for a physical copy of what could technically still be a PC-only game (depending whether the "console version" stretch goal gets met, although it will more likely than not will be). They didn't even specify whether the keys will be redeemed via Steam, or via some vile alternative storefront! :face-with-stuck-out-tongue-and-winking-eye: Just generally a much less professionally run Kickstarter vs. Eiyuden Chronicles (which I also backed).

Ah well, against my better judgement, and despite the fact that these are 99.99% sure to come to Xbox Game Pass (there's no way they don't take that money+exposure), I'll keep the backing as is. I love Shadow Hearts too much to leave anything to chance!

...OK, Wild Arms, you can come too. :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes:

Edit: Apparently they did confirm the PC storefront (in the comments, not the KS body...). It's planned for Steam and... GOG! :tightly-closed-eyes:
