Since I got my Deck a few months ago, I've managed to complete more games in my backlog and logged more gaming hours than I've managed to do overall the last 3 years.

And suddenly there's like a million deals on interesting games and great bundles which cause the backlog to grow and grow....

Not that I'm complaining... 😉

Been working on streamlining my backlog. Distilled it down to about 50 games that I really must play. Everything else must wait for these games (unless I add something to this list - such as a newly discovered classic or what have you).

The criteria on the list is either:

1) Good Metascore/Opencritic score.
2) Overwhelmingly Positive Reviews on Steam.
3) Strong recommendation from someone I trust.
4) A sequel to something I love.
5) Generally should be unplayed, but I've made a few exceptions for a couple of games that I tried and (maybe unfairly) bounced off, or the developer updated them to make them more appealing to me.

List is below.

Alien Isolation (Horror)
Aokana - Four Rhythms Across the Blue (Visual Novel)
Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness and the Secret Hideout (RPG)
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger (Shooter)
Castle of Illusion (2D Platformer)
CHAOS;HEAD NOAH (Visual Novel)
CHRONO TRIGGER (RPG)
CORPSE FACTORY (Visual Novel)
Crash Bandicoot (3D Platformer)
CrossCode (RPG)
Divinity: Original Sin 2 (RPG)
FINAL FANTASY VI (RPG)
FINAL FANTASY VII
FINAL FANTASY VIII - REMASTERED
FINAL FANTASY XII THE ZODIAC AGE (RPG)
Frog Detective 2: The Case of the Invisible Wizard (Adventure)
God of War 2018 (Action)
Gorogoa (Puzzle)
Genshin Impact (RPG)
The Great Ace Attorney 1 (Adventure)
The Great Ace Attorney 2 (Adventure)
Hades (Roguelike)
A Hat in Time (3D Platformer)
Highway Blossoms (Visual Novel)
Hollow Knight (Metroidvania)
The House in Fata Morgana (Visual Novel)
Into the Breach (Strategy)
It Takes Two (3D Platformer)
Katamari Damacy REROLL (Casual)
Kindred Spirits on the Roof (Visual Novel)
The Longest Journey (Adventure)
Lunistice (3D Platformer)
Mega Man (2D Platformer)
Metro Exodus (Shooter)
Outer Wilds (Puzzle)
Raging Loop (Visual Novel)
Rakuen (Visual Novel)
Resident Evil Village (Horror)
Rusty Lake Hotel (Puzzle)
Satisfactory (Simulator)
Shadowrun: Dragonfall (RPG)
South Park: The Stick of Truth (RPG)
STEINS;GATE ELITE (Visual Novel)
Subnautica (Survival)
Synergia (Visual Novel)
Total War: SHOGUN 2 (Strategy)
Walkabout Mini Golf (VR/Sport)
The Witcher 3 (RPG)
Yakuza 0 (RPG)
Yoku's Island Express (Metroidvania)

All are on PC so far. Going to go through the library on my Xbox and Switch to see if there's anything else I want to play. And new games by virtue of them being new releases will by and large take priority over playing games in the list.

Any recommendations on where to start? I'm replaying Shenmue as part of my "one annual Christmas game each December" effort, but once that's done I'm gonna get stuck into these games.

Looks like the Bamco PR statement for AC6 clearly stated it will be a revived and reimagined game.

Jointly developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. and FromSoftware, Inc. this is the latest title in the ARMORED CORE series, now revived and reimagined as a new action game after 10 long years since the last entry in the franchise.

Will offer a game experience based on the mech game know-how FromSoftware cultivated over 25 years of developing games in the series, but now introducing groundbreaking gameplay found in the developer’s recent action games. The new ARMORED CORE title will combine these elements into thrilling action that only mechas can provide. The game promises to be a unique entry in the mech action game genre.

Players will be able to freely move through massive three-dimensional environments with rapid maneuverability while experiencing visceral vehicular combat.

Signature to FromSoftware’s carefully crafted game design, the game will feature challenging and memorable battles along with a fulfilling progression system and deep gameplay, all of it now powered by assembling mechs and going to combat with massive bosses.

Players will recognize the sense of satisfaction and achievement when they overcome a difficult situation and relish momentary victory, and perhaps a boost to their standing, before encountering the next challenge.
So they are definitely gonna deviate from what the games used to be and cater to all their recent Souls fans. The question is how big will the deviation be.

I think something like Dark Souls ===> Sekiro was a nice enough deviation that pleased old fans and newer hardcore fast action game fans. Though the game was hard asf. And now the designer will be directing AC6 so I expect it to be brutal. The game should be a lot slower but still a fun mech shooter/flyer etc.

Its gonna be tough tho. They have to keep AC fans happy while catering to Elden Ring, Bloodborne, Sekiro and Souls fans. I think they just break the game down into sections and have each section please everyone lol. Maybe have some optional hard missions. Replay value Nioh style would be great too.

By the way 1 week from now the Steam Deck will be available in Nippon and other select parts of Asia.

So that will be pretty exciting to hear about and how people react to it. It's been generally well received at TGS.

Mor I looked into the numbers some more and it looks like 100k is how many orders Komodo has had (this is not exclusive to Steam Deck and could be for a mix of Valve Index and other stuff.

Now as for Steam Deck specific stuff it does look like they got around 20k or so pre-orders. Now if these pre-orders are Japan only numbers or not, I'm not entirely sure. I remember something about Komodos numbers previously being at around 80k and them jumping to 100k would line up with those 20k people actually doing through with their Steam Deck. Not everyone kept their Steam Deck pre-order, since some people (just like the western release) were caught off guard when it was their turn and didn't have the money for it.

As a reminder I'm not sure if that 20k is Japan only or Asia in total. If it's in total then that seems like a very realistic number. if it is actually just Japan by itself that would be very impressive. Maybe in reality the number for Japan is closer to something like 5k units or so, If it is liked, and I would imagine that it could reach 20k by spring of next year.

Where did I get the 20k number from? That is because Komodo kept 2 separate order number. 20k is the Steam Deck queue number (it should actually be bigger than that) and the 100k are completed orders that Komodo has fully charged people for.

Also most likely kids won't know what a Steam Deck is (supposedly the next Switch won't be out until at least 1 more year. And by that time you might even see a Steam deck 2) but if they do become a niche that has staying power you might see them pick them up when they get older (middle school/high school)

Having actual good accessibility / difficulty options like other big modern games would go a long way towards making it able to please everyone but that's not something I'd expect from them at this point. Maybe because it'll be such a departure from Souls core they'll give it a shot though.

Callisto Protocol was a solid 4/5 in the first half, but slowly fell to a 3/5 by the end. I’m kind of bummed since I figured I was locked in for a game as good as Dead Space 1/2, but those are both a clear step above. The combat and volume of enemies just starts to wear thin and your toolset doesn’t become more interesting. There are a couple weird decisions too like making bosses kill you in 1 or 2 hits only so you have to play perfectly for the entire fight. The first time you fight a boss again (repeat) they add in another enemy mid way through and it probably took me 30+ tries which felt like running into a brick wall.

Picked up Dwarf Fortress, Squadrons and Fuser (delisting this month).

So Im somewhat done with my game purchases this year, but still looking at certain titles at the winter sales.

Due to lack of time I have managed to massively reduce my video game purchases, which isn't a big problem since games will just get cheaper later.

I may not be the biggest fan of Sonys current output of games (Gravity Rush series now please) I do love their commitment to making sure the games work on the Deck. Especially after how they seemed reluctant to release their big games on their own portable hardware.

Lessons learned I guess...

I've only played Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami adn i got to say, I love the familiar feeling of Kamurocho. You really get to know the streets and areas in the games.

And I can't quite explain it, there's just a certain unmatched charm and feel to the Yakuza games that you won't find anywhere else.
And I don't even really enjoy the fighting gameplay that much, and the cutscenes can at times drag on. Still, the story is captivating and you really just want to spend time in these games.

Guess who got hooked up on Hades XD. For someone who is not thar big of a fan of rogue games and axonometric perspective Hades is really enjoyable. Tonight I almost passed 2 new bosses that I never encountered before, I really got lucky with upgrades and I was dealing a lot of damage with a bow.

Started God of War (2018) today and put about 2 hours into it.

Enough time to know it’s not for me. I won’t say it’s bad, but I find the story and characters uninteresting and the gameplay is quite shallow, padded out by the bland AAA cruft.

Plus I hate physical/sword/axe combat played with triggers and bumpers. It just feels wrong to play for me.

So I’ve dropped it.

First few months were already pretty rough but TGA just made it worse and then added a bunch more to may and june.

Normally you'd expect things to move around but like the whole first 6 months are packed so where do you move anything? April is really the only open month because there's just dead island 2 (which is going to be terrible lets be honest) and the Horizon expansion.

Yea early next year is really strong.

Persona 3
Return to Castlevania DLC
Wo long

Also keeping an eye on Returnal but those 3 should keep me and my Deck occupied until summer when Diablo IV drops :)

Hopefully Diablo IV gets Steam release but it doesn't look like it will for now.

2023 is going to be an insane year in gaming. So many cool upcoming games. And let's not mention the backlog alone can last me for more than a few years. Being grown-up sucks because we need to make compromises. So my priority would be Zelda and some 2021 games like Midnight Suns. Very intrigued by Returnal and Last of Us as well but probably not going to get them on day 1. My steam library is still free of Sony games so I will add a few to it soon.

It's not worth much now since you said you're done but you can change the attacks. I really hate this dark souls influence of attacking on the shoulder buttons too and thankfully it let me switch it to the old GoW controls where square and triangle are the two attacks.

Thanks. If I’d loved the game and just disliked the control scheme I’d give it another go, but there’s plenty I don’t care for in the game other than the controls so I won’t be going back to it.
