The trick with the Steam controller is to turn off the need to click on the D-pad, and to set the haptics to high for both thumbpads for every game.

It's absolutely glorious.
That's the one thing I haven't done yet. I still use the thumbstick for movement and pad to look around. I should maybe give that a shot. Haptics must always high though.

I missed out on the controller talk, but I feel like writing a little about it since I own all three controllers.

I'm excluding Xbox controller since well, I don't own it and I hate dislike Microsoft with a passion.

Dualshock 4
I've been using DS4 the longest and it's the controller I'm most familiar with since I've been using Dualshocks since the PS2 days. What I like the most about DS4 is the D-pad and the face buttons. It's rather difficult to accidentally press the wrong directional button or the face buttons, compared with the Steam Controller, for example. I am the most comfortable with its form factor, mostly because of muscle memory and the size of my hands. As you might have guessed, the battery life on this controller is horrendous. If you have seen people actually buying multiple DS4s to last them more than a few hours of gaming, I can confirm that their reason is warranted.

Switch Pro
This is the newest controller I own. Having asymmetric analog sticks threw me out of the loop at first, but after a bit of adjustment period, I don't have an issue with it. The grips (or its lack thereof) on the controller is what I had more problem with since I'm used to the grips on the DS4 and Steam Controller (especially the one on Steam Controller since it fits perfectly in my hands). The start/select (or whatever it's called on Nintendo platform) feels like it has been recessed enough where most of the times I can't tell if I already pressed it or not until the action is reflected on the screen/game. Other than that, it is a pretty decent controller. The best thing about this controller is its battery life. And I'm not just saying this because I hardly use it, but it can actually go multiple days for 2-3 hours of gaming each day for at least a week on a single charge. I can never say the same about the DS4.

Steam Controller
This controller is easily the most versatile controller I ever come across. The programmability and the pads on this thing made it the best all-around controller I ever used. What I dislike about the controller are its face buttons. It's too easy to press the wrong button because of the combination of its size and space between them, which I thought was quite small, compared with DS4 which I thought was perfect. and while I can understand why it's the way it was, I feel it's something which can be addressed in its next revision. Apart from that, it's the controller I'd like to use for playing most games. There was definitely a learning period to actually utilise its programmability to the fullest and committing the pads into muscle memory, but once this period is over, you can use this controller for almost anything.
That's a good write-up. I always wanted to get the Steam Controller, but decided to wait for revision 2. Meanwhile I bought the DS4 and I'm pretty happy., True that it doesn't last many gaming sessions without recharging, but I do usually recharge after every second or third time I use it, so it's okay. I have heard that people actually mod the DS4 to double it's battery capacity. Maybe if the capacity deteriorates further, I'd look into that too.

And hope Valve considers removing the stick with a proper dpad in revision 2 of the Steam Controller.

On controllers I have various Xbox One controllers and DS4's as well, but I really don't like the DS4 if I can be honest. The battery is bad, games rarely support the button prompts (though it has been getting better.) The triggers are weird. The sticks and build-quality are cheap. o_O I preferred the DS3 in just about every way.

Nowadays though my primary controller is the Xbox One... er, one? It took a while to get used to the off-set sticks, but these things are built quite well, it works with my Panasonic Eneloop batteries, rumble triggers are cute, and the d-pad isn't great but certainly a step-up from the 360 one. Another benefit ends up being that the button prompts are practically default across the board for PC games.

... And there are many cool colors and limited editions, not to mention the ability to make your own with the design lab.

I too would like to try a Steam controller but await the oft-mentioned Revision 2.

We are currently working closely with 07thExpansion and Witch Hunt, the team behind Umineko‘s localization, on Ciconia When They Cry, and intend to provide a simultaneous English release on MangaGamer and Steam when the game is released in Japan at this year’s Summer Comiket.
Now we just gotta hope they can get it on Steam. I know MangaGamer is under increased scrutiny from Valve lately though... 😓

i haven't found it boring yet but it is a lot less interesting since you're so overpowered and you can't try different weapons or anything

All this controller talk is doing nothing to curb my tangential spending habits. I have all the parts for a MiSTer FPGA arriving this week and a couple of Raspberry pi projects on the go. I been thinking on a new controller especially because I think the MiSTer might have issues with my DS4 and XBox One controllers.
Damn you and all your controller talk!

I was bored before I even finished the main game. Once you get to the point where your own posture literally does not matter it just becomes a pretty boring rhythm game that uses a single lane and repeats patterns.

Game's still pretty neat for other reasons but I can't play it for long stretches of time because it will get too simple after "warm up" time has passed.

Been interested in the MiSTer for a while now since I’ve seen it a few times in Giant Bomb streams. Do you have sources where I could read up on it and get the parts?

Hello everyone,
Long time lurker first time poster. I just started playing The Surge and was wondering if any of the dlc is needed to get the full experience (like Artorias in Dark Souls) or are they just random extra levels/challenges with no connection to the main game?
Also, will the new Anno "exclusivity" last forever or will it return to steam in 1 year?

Would someone in the editing staff not have wanted that cleared up, or was it left vaguely worded for clickbait?
Just yesterday Kotaku published out an article about a song in Persona 5 using that well known slur for the mentally handicappend. The writer reached out to Sega/Atlus, didn't hear back 'in time' and just published the hit piece filled with accusations and assuming the worst. Let's just say it blew up in their faces. Gaming media has reached the lows of the Yellow Press, lies, slander and clickbait over research, truth and well thought out opnions.

We just don't know but it's easy to think that Ubisoft won't return after the 12-month exclusivity deal so it will remain as a Co-exclusive forever. BUT nothing is confirmed.

Grim Dawn is so exhausting.

Who designed the waypoints to be located so far away from each other? Such a weird decision. It forces you to play in long sessions because your summoned portal will vanish as soon as you exit the game. Sometimes, it may take me an hour, even more, to find the next waypoint and I shouldn't stop until I find it. If I exit the game before I find one, I'll have to replay the whole session all over again because the enemies will be respawned. Gah.

Hmm, is it for a non-Steam game? Or perhaps older than DX8 games? I recently completed Utawarerumono which is a non-Steam game but I can customise the default M/KB profile to use it with the game, assigning the face button to advance dialogue, the back paddle to skip, etc. I had to remap the screenshot button since it doesn't seem to be working though.

afaik yes, there are some connections .... but i also believe the story is complete without playing those

that being said - the DLC stuff is even better than the main game (especially the park one)

Also, will the new Anno "exclusivity" last forever or will it return to steam in 1 year?
like Mor said - i don't think they'll be back ... ubi wanted to ditch steam for a good while now, and epic only gave them an excuse (and a big bag of money) to finally jump ship

It's worth mentioning that the fuck up is more on Kotaku's editor than anyone. In a now deleted twitter post Laura explained that the editor changed the initial wording to something much more definitive, and the same editor published the unfinished draft before Atlus responded.

I rarely dive deep into the controller setup myself and mostly use whatever user-made profile is the most popular (and then modify those if needed).

Both are to blame, it's not like it's the first time one of her pieces is pure crap, plus how is this the first time she has concerns over how they do things at her workplace if she wants to be above criticism for this one thing now? Kotaku was awesome before and I'm so glad to be onboard and woo they're so progressive and their opinions align with mine and they're so cool for having me and it was my dream but oh, now they're bad. They're throwing each other under the bus, she threw him under the bus first saying that stuff publically before (and after) being told to shut up and it makes no difference to me, they all suck. Her take seems like an exit strategy devised just after she realized this was going big and there could be consequences this one time, so after being happily there and super aligned with their usual crap now she has to be a poor victim in order to find work elsewhere at a place that will then be awesome for having her.

I'm talking about games that support controllers but not mouse input through the right touchpad. I'm wondering if anyone has found a good option for those besides a mouse-based profile or the use of the mouse joystick option which I've never managed to configure in a way that satisfies me.

Talking about crappy Switch Pro pad without mentioning the vastly superior Wii U Pro pad, bunksmh.gif
\

SteamCon: Games that play best with KB+M, used to use it for VNs, but now I have GPD WIn 2 for those.
Pros: Trackpads are amazing, Battery life is out of this world. Can be configured to do pretty much everything you imagine
Cons: Terrible DPad solution, bad face buttons, rather heavy, feels cheaply made.
DS4: Jack of all trades, master of none. Use it mostly for PS4 games and Lunatic Rave 2 nowadays, should be decent for PS1/PS2 emulation as well
Pros: Lightbar can be disabled on PC, good stick placement, decent DPad
Cons: Terrible battery life, stick material doesn't like sweat, requires admin access on each connection if you want to hide the Dinput version from a game
WiiU: 2D games that don't require constant stick access, emulators of Nintendo consoles
Pros: Absolutely amazing battery life (80+ hours of use per charge), best DPad and best face buttons of the bunch
Cons: Stick placement takes some getting used to (after 2 years, I still prefer DS for stick games), requires additional dongle to work with PC.
8bitdo M30: Genesis/Saturn emulation
Haven't used it enough for pro/con analysis. Don't like it's not detected as a standard XInput pad, requiring faffing about with Steam Input. No sticks as well, so won't work with many modern games.
Pop'n Music ASC: Pop'n Music, beatmania IIDX
Pros: True arcade experience
Cons: LOUD, LARGE, buttons tend to stick from time to time (should get better with longer use). Extremely limited usage.
(not pictured: spare DS4, spare Wii U pad, 2 DS2s, Hori Fighting Commander, Mayflash Arcade Stick)

Creating controversy over a made-up thing on a subject this important is really despicable and a new low (which is a sentence I've found myself saying a little too often recently to be honest). It's also particularly bad since it's made by the same outlet that likes to define itself as the closest thing to actual journalism in game media.

I'm in the UK and because of Easters negative influence on delivery dates, nothing has arrived as yet. I went with Mouser for the main part of the De10-Nano. I decided on an AIO daughter-board & RAM through retroshoppontopt. I found them through the Atari forum local sellers thread. Main info is MiSTer Gihub wiki.

Just finished The World Next Door. If you played and enjoyed titles like Night in the Woods and Oxenfree I recommend you pick it up when on sale. Behind its puzzle-based match3-like combat, it actually shares many aspects with the aforementioned titles, mainly the importance given to its diverse set of characters and their psychological peculiarities and how they fit in the society the live in. Sadly it lacks some much needed character development which ultimately prevents the game from becoming something really special so go in prepared to see a few plot holes and many things left a little underdeveloped, but it's a very nice title nonetheless.

I think this came out of EA this week.

I primarily use X1 controllers. I have grown to dislike the Dual Shock 4. PS sticks are always looser, I don't like that. But one of my DS4s has developed annoying drift and another controller - one that I've had since near PS4 launch but has probably been used less than 5 hours, has a severely sticking circle button. Not to mention I have to use those thumbstick covers because they'll decay on you. I used to rank DS4 high but now I say they're garbage too. Meanwhile my X1 controller with extremely heavy use is just fine...
Same here, the current revision of the DS4 is usable and far superior to whatever the fuck the DS3 was, doesn't fall apart after a few weeks anymore and after half a decade they fixed the problem of stuck buttons (LB/RB was worst for me) but battery life is still crap, the flimsy L/RTriggers are made for babyhands and the whole thing doesn't feel 100% right in my hands.

Meanwhile I really love the X1 pads despite so-so digipad and bumpers*, got me a few with rubber on the underside and they feel good to hold, everything is where it's supposed to, triggers are lovely and so satisfying to press and best of all I can throw in black Eneloops with high capacity. Although still not the insane runtime as the Switch Pro pad which I like too but haven't used on PC yet.

Also the Sea of Thieves X1 pad might be one of the nicest looking pads ever, all Sony can up with are different color while MS went all out, the Design Lab is awesome too.

*Punching through One Finger Death Punch 2 with the bumpers, working great so far, how is everyone else playing OFDP?

random controller talk? time to post random controller collection...
I believe every game needs the fitting "weapon" of choice :drinking-blob:

these are what I use depending on the game for PC (at my desk or via streaming in the living room) and Raspberry Pi gaming.
(I was bored, yes)

and for gaming on the go :p (that thing is surprisingly usable)

overall I'm really happy with the newer version of the X1 controller, works really well for most stuff...
for 2D side scrolling stuff I use mostly the 8bitdo NES30 Pro or the SNES style iBuffalo ones... both have great dpads and are ace for stuff like Spelunky, Shovel Knight or Tetris... and Retro gaming in general of course.

That Arcade stick is a custom build one that I only use for shmups

The 8bitDO SN30 Pro is my favorite controller to use on PC right now. Feels like a SNES controller but it has full XInput support. And since it supports different formats, it also works perfectly on the Switch and my Android phone too.

Oh, this is good to hear. I wishlisted it asap, mostly cuz I was curious what VIZ Media's first published game would be like... I hope they become a decent publisher over time and it's nice to see them spread out from just anime/manga into games as well.

I have a DualShock4 too, I almost always use it with DS4Windows (I might need an alternative, it hasn't been updated in ages and there's the occasional conflict, exclusive mode won't work if I open something like UPlay before connecting the controller, other such minor annoyances) which gets it recognized as an Xbox pad so it works with most games, rather than dabble with Steam controller configuration. So I end up missing on its extra features usually but whatever, ease of use. I just got it because I didn't wanna give Microsoft more money. If a game accepts standard input or supports the DS4 natively then I'll configure it properly.

Before that I used a 360 pad which started having analog stick drift way too soon. I messed around with the Wii Classic Controller for a time but I didn't have a USB adapter if those exist so I had to attach it to a Wiimote, use batteries, etc. Not optimal. I still use the Wiimote + nunchuck for Dolphin but I need a new set, I stored it badly for a long time and it's in a really bad state, yet new official Nintendo stuff are really expensive for some reason and I don't wanna go third party.

I'm waiting for a Retro-bit Official SEGA Saturn USB pad to arrive imported from Amazon.de, it should be soon. For Genesis/Saturn/Fighters/etc. d-pad bliss. For the longest time I wanted a Hori Fighting Commander instead but when these were announced I knew I'd get one if they delivered. They're nicely priced too.

Rage 2 is listed as Steam key... I thought the only way to have the Steam version was directly through Steam?

I might pick it up and ask for a refund it they change it to a Beth.net key.
Yeah, they probably have an outdated listing.
I don't believe Bethesda is selling Steam keys for it.

Before that I used a 360 pad which started having analog stick drift way too soon.
I still use 360 pads, and that has been my problem.

Since my 360 broke down, I bought a Microsoft wireless "dongle" to use my 360 controllers on PC.

I like them, or at least, I'm used to them, and they have great compatibility with games.
Usually, I just turn them on, and use them, no need to configure anything.

But, all 4 pads I have have analogue stick drift. In some, one or both of the analogue sticks actually get stuck to a side.
And, in a couple, the triggers keep failing.

This has made fighting games pretty much impossible to properly play, and even while playing something like Euro Truck Simulator 2, I frequently have the truck turning to one of the sides, or the camera starting to slowly turn.

I really need to get a new pad soon.
I thought about trying to track down another 360 pad, but it seems clear there's a problem with analogue stick drift.

What would be a good, durable option for me, one that has a similar wide range of compatibility?
