... and on a completely unrelated note:

After coming across countless ridiculous and almost parody-like Sweeney puff pieces by PCGamesN, that's the first time I've seen an article from them that reflects badly on Epic :thinking-blob:

Well, 250k is nothing to sneeze at. But I cant help but wonder how much more could have sold if it were on Steam. And it pretty much confirms that is has to be the best selling game on the store.

Is this good? The game supposedly already sold over a million copies through all platforms. How many copies do this kind of games usually sell in the first week when they're successful?

i guess people in general really don't care where they buy their games ...

and i doubt it would've sold more if it was on steam, honestly ... probably about the same ... maybe like 50-100k more at best

but then again - Vermintide 2 sold 1m (on PC) in 5 weeks, so ... who knows

depends on the game, the hype, the marketing etc. ... there really isn't a set number for that sort of stuff

In any case, I'm not much worried yet. Let's see how much legs the game/store has. SURELY someone will notice the lack of features.

MK11 has a 25% discount on GMG and they paycheck is still way too far. I'll try not to cry.

Been watching some of the Snooker World Championship. Why are Snooker video games generally so poor..

User reviews (yes, I actually use them!) seem to say its the normal type of fair for these games i.e a bit naff.

There hasn't been a good snooker game since Jimmy Whites Whirlwind Snooker.

We knew as soon as they had anything remotely considered a success they would be shouting it from the rooftops. Having one relatively high profile game do OK does not seem like something we have to worry about too much. Especially when interest in that game already appears to have fallen off a cliff.

good point, actually

the fact that this is the only game they've given out actual numbers for is probably telling ...

I feel like Epic is playing the super long game here. At this stage they just want regular PC folks to install the client and buy a game or two (exclusives) and to get their huge Fortnite user base to also use the client for other games (free games) .

The plan must be that at some point this forms a larger and larger group of people who regularly buy games on Epic Store, and once that happens I assume they will increase the 12% to 30 and also stop paying for exclusives.

I personally doubt that this will ever come to pass, so I guess the question is how stubborn Epic is, and whether they run out of money first.

I am curious if those playing WWZ on EGS can play alongside Steam players down the line.
Because if not, it'd be funny if that boosts its steam sales :V

Mind you the whole 'doesn't matter where I get my PC games from' is not something that's gonna work in the long run, esp. once one realizes they've got their games split between multiple platforms.

i don't think so, to be honest

i think their plan is to keep moneyhatting exclusives until all the competition is dead ... i mean - sure, they'll probably dump all indies in a year or two and just focus on the big games .. but other than that - i really don't think they'll stop until they either snuff out all the competition, or run out of money (which doesn't seem like it'll be the case for a VERY long time)

The thing about them playing the "long game" is that we know Google, Apple, and Amazon are all on their way, and they're going to make Epic's strategies and bankroll look quaint. If they want to throw around cash in order to build mindshare, they really have a limited time to do it.

It seems that Ninja created videogames and he will also kill them.

well, i mean - if everything is going to be exclusive for 6-10 months then i don't think those "doesn't matter where" people will even be bothered ... by that time they'll move on to other games

that is also true ... fuck, what a complete shitshow gaming will become soon ... ugh

apparently

I wonder what will Valve do if/when shit hits the fan. Surely they must be crunching numbers and working on new strategies.
Hey at least give him credit for being a good entertainer.
Honestly I've never seen a stream of his :p but I guess he must be doing something right to have so much pull now.

I wouldn't worry about google at the moment. Until they can get a game system/service that doesn't rely on infrastructure that doesn't exist or is too cost prohibitive for a majority of people in the US, they aren't a big threat. Also, I give Stadia like, a year before it's quietly cancelled

Apple and Amazon though, they I'd keep an eye on. Epic might have Fortnite 'fuck you' money, but Bezos could wake up tomorrow and find 'Fuck you several small to medium sized countries GDP combined' money buried in his couch cushions and dive into the console game - and he'd own the game and console development, game distribution and publishing, and the web backend via AWS. He could have complete vertical integration if he chose to.

I really don't know why i keep buying every Mortal Kombat. For me it feels so fucking clunky compared to japanese fighting games (or even Killer Instinct, to name a western one).

250K out of a million on 3 platforms makes it the worst version of the game.
Isn't it a co-op shooter? Cos those tend to be more successful on PC than console

if i had to guess i'd say they'll try doing for a while what they've been doing previously - improving steam, offering better split to devs (although still nowhere near the completely unsustainable 12%) and all that other stuff ...

but while this MIGHT convince some indies or even AA publishers - it won't really matter in the long run ... because the moment Tim opens his wallet, all the other stuff volvo could possibly offer developers and publishers (short of an even bigger bag of money) doesn't matter any more

but i seriously hope volvo won't start moneyhatting anyone ... that would be just awful

true ... but also most games sell the worst on PC tbh ... very occasionally one might sell better on PC over Xbone ... but never PS4

I think moneyhatting would be a very bad move for them since it will give devs and pubs the signal to start a bidding war between platforms, and Valve will almost certainly be outbidded by Epic.

Deep Silver already started (allegedly) ... before they went exclusive they went back to volvo asking for a better offer than what epic gave them .....

Yeah. I hope Valve doesnt start money hatting. I dont think It will. Epic is going to get a foothold in the PC market with the bigger titles but I think Steam will still be the place to go for indies and the lesser known gems.

A breakdown of the platfoems would help. I think it would be something like PS4 > PC > Xbox

WWZ was the top selling Xbox game last week.

"If we became a satellite Epic studio would it change your mind?"
Well, yes?

That's what I said as well. But then he took the "Epic is publishing our game" route. He seems to prefer Epic over Valve no matter what. You can read the whole discussion here, just find the comment with the most replies. :)

Well, there it is. 250k is much, much higher than I expected, especially since WWZ isn't a very good game to begin with. It may be possible that many buyers are casual gamers, but still, Epic will use this to convince other devs to abandon Steam - which is Epic's end goal after all.

Also, why the hell are people buying Ubisofts games on EGS instead of uPlay?

Really, really sad that Epic's strategy seems to be successful for them and the devs/games involved. This means moneyhats and store exclusivity for 3rd party games are here to stay, thereby destroying my vision on healthy competition where 3rd party games are available in as many stores as possible.

I've been banned on Era for saying it, but I'll say it again: f*ck Epic for establishing store exclusivity deals on pc, and f*ck people who support them by buying their moneyhatted games. 😠

Valve should bid on games with the intention of inflating the price Epic pays so they lose even more on games that will go to Steam in a year anyway.

Didnt know you were banned for that

I'm shocked MK11 actually launched on steam, I honestly it would taken off the service at the last second.

Tim doesn't want healthy competition ... he wants absolute domination

he literally already said that in one of his tweets (or reddit posts, can't remember) ... where he said something along the lines of "i don't mind other stores existing in the future. origin will have ea games, uplay will have ubi games, steam will have valve games" ... i think he might've slipped there honestly, said just a bit too much ... but that's basically what he wants - total domination ... first party games on their respective stores, and everything else on egs
