The idea that Palworld used generative AI, at least for the creature designs, is pretty silly for another reason: their announcement trailer predates the release of all the more powerful/usable generative AI tools, and that trailer already has more or less the same designs.

It passed 1.2 million users already. Maybe it will reach 1.3? Crazy stuff.

Maybe they are forgetting about PUBG since that was also a paid game. So they are now the second highest paid for game on Steam?

It's actually amazing once again how AI tech proofs how performative leftist internet bubbles are, everyone pretends to care about muh artists so much that they very consistently end up harassing and death threatening these exact artists because they smell Ai art where there isn't any.

It's all just morally self-rightous witchhunting

My wild wild guess, is that the trailer is the catalyst to all of this. If you look back at that original trailer. There were some (the key world being SOME) pals that did look like they ripped off Pokemon. When they do the whole Akira bike thing in the trailer you can tell that's a Pokemon. But you also have those blue penguins and the cows. Are those from Pokemon? The main point being that the looked at the feedback that they got.

If at that time they got the feedback that they got now, they might have changed stuff. Maybe not by a lot but they would have tried change up the designs just a tiny bit more. Other people were saying how their upcoming game also ripped off Hollow Knight. I mean I guess. Anyway people overall seemed to be okay with those Pokemon ripoff designs that were in that first trailer and they went based off that.

Another thing, and this is something that this dev does do and I'm curious about how other feel, is asset flip. Does this dev asset flip? Well yeah they do and even admit to it, but I feel like there are times when it's not a bad thing. I mean AAA companies buy assets, Valve purchased assets for Half Life Alyx (textures).

I feel like when it comes to asset flips the biggest issue that people had was that some one would simply buy assets, dump them in a game and basically just call it a day with no real direction. To an extent that's what Craftopia was, I will give them credit though since there were people that liked that idea and since there was legitimate stuff that you could do in that game. So it was more than just simply an asset flip. When it comes to Palworld, it's more than just an asset flip since the game mechanics for the game actually work (have some though into them, even though they are from another games) and people are having fun.

Pocketpair is now at over 40 employees, that would still not be enough for a game like this if they had to create every single asset themselves. Just the Pal alone take over a month just to make for the game is what it says. You also have a number of other small indie games that use pre-made assets since the devs working on the game don't have that kind of talent/resources to make them and it would be better for them to just buy them and focus on the core gameplay mechanics for the game. Other indie games do this and fof good reason, but for some people this seems like it's a Sin.

One of the people that I did see condemning them for asset flips, looks like they have a history of working at AAA companies and well indie games do have that sort of budget and big team to make assets from scratch for the game.

I don't want to go into the Palworld issue but I don't like people posting nonsense either
The dev goes in great detail at explaining how the game came to be and who they hired to work on it, the problem is it's all in japanese (yes the game is made in Japan let's stop with this bullshit made in China thing)
Google translate can help but it's not perfect
This post talks about the "6 miracles" that allowed Palworld to even exist. Miracle 3 and 5 specifically talk about who modeled/animated (3) and who designed/created (5) the Pals. Miracle 1 is also very interesting
Look, making games is hard. You can't just mash everything together and rake in the money, especially if the game actually runs well as Palworld seems. There is work behind it. Let's not spout random things just from hearsay

Where is the idea that the game is not-Pokemons are made with AI ? Is it because the CEO said that they like to use genAi ?
Yeah the salty nintendo fans are reaching for anything they can. I mean I wouldn't be shocked if it was found to have AI or gets an update in the future that has AI work in it but I feel like right now just screaming AI is distracting from the real issue that these are still art plagiarists and shouldn't be celebrated because we like seeing fanboys mald on social media. Anyone who knows me well enough knows I'm the last person that would ever be a nintendo fan but they have a point somewhere in their tantrum tornado. This game's success is going to set an extremely bad precedent.

A game with alike concept with all gen pokemons (I'm only interested on the first gen one) made by Game Freak and let's say with pokemon stadium combat rules would be awesome.
Nintendo is free to make it happen and would sell tons. Instead of sue or worry about palworld just make a great multiplayer game.

PC-tan asset flip or not doesn’t mean not using bought assets, one can build the whole game like that, asset flip means a barebones game with barely functional game play that is thrown together with bought assets.
I seems like people don't seem to understand that then. That's how I understand what an asset flip is, but for other it seems to be any game at all that makes uses of assets that they purchased form some one else.
yes the game is made in Japan let's stop with this bullshit made in China thing

Are people really saying that the game is from China?

Going back to that post by Mark those numbers are crazy.

Also I'm guessing that Yokai watch and DQM are confused by the numbers and the success of this title?

It's not even the same genre as (mainline) Pokemon, I don't think anyone's seriously blaming them for ripping off a genre or gameplay or say it affects Pokemon itself in any real way as if you'll play some survival and crafting shooter instead of Pokemon and take from their game sales. It just so (intentionally) happens a key design in the game is obviously a knock off. But it happens. And to Nintendo more often than not. Loads of Zelda likes on mobile and other platforms rip off everything they've done whether it's Wind Waker style complete with near identical sailing or open world/air adventure with gliders, physics, climbing, etc. and there are actual Pokemon game clones and Animal Crossing clones, different from just being in the same genres and clearly copying (or trying to copy) their design, aesthetics and/or other elements. Perhaps this is the most successful yet to clearly rip them off but others got hype before, like Ooblets and Temtem, but failed to deliver (as much). If they haven't been able to sue actual clones I don't know if they can sue over the aesthetics as that's happened before too (didn't everyone say Genshin Impact copied BOTW, clearly that game is also different to just a Zelda clone though so in the end it's just an art style inspiration).. Oh well, it doesn't matter to me. If people find it enjoyable it must be doing something right and should be commended even if the studio's basically Gameloft 2.

If truly is an amalgamation of different things.

Also I'm starting to take notice that when it comes to streamers and stuff that they don't really pay attention to longer term and smaller stuff. Maybe this is why stuff just "comes out of nowhere".

I don't think this game used AI. I think it has similar designs to Pokemon. Too similar, but I don't think Nintendo, The Pokemon Company, Creatures, or GameFreak will do anything about it and those who are expecting a response that would destroy it will be disappointed.

I think Nintendo will try to get this on Switch 2 though. Probably at launch.

I also thought it would hit 5 million by end of the week, but can see it doing it in the next 24 hours. Probably will be over 10 million sometime this year.

The witch hunt is crazy. I think some designs are more than "inspired" by Pokemon, but there's not a bit of evidence to suggest AI was used.

I don't think Nintendo allows early access games so it won't show up on the Switch 2 until 1.0. Apparently that's the same reason it isn't on PS5.

And yeah the sales are bonkers and have already shattered my prediction. 5 million by tomorrow with 8-10 million by February 1.

Remember this

Square just shot themselves in the foot.
I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.
What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase FFXIII for either system, nor will they purchase any of Square's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Square has alienated an entire market with this move.
Square, publicly apologize and cancel FFXIII for 360 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

To an extent this is happening again, but it's about PalWorld and Japanese gamers disappointed that it's a Japanese company that seems to be ripping off another Japanese company and that they feel disgusted (I'm not sure if they feel betrayed though. Okay it seems like the betrayal part is related to VTubers and how they are playing Palworld and how those agencies like Clover have deals with Nintendo already in place? And because of that they are betraying Nintendo by allowing their clients to play the game.

So maybe back in 2008 that one guy was actually onto something..... Or maybe not I mean FFXVI is releasing on PC later this year right?

That is extremely lousy for game pass as I assume it takes both Xbox and Windows Store in consideration.

No wonder there is all these negative game pass articles lately about growth having been stagnated.
I only know a few people using game pass on PC, and every one of them has issues with it.

And even if it works as intended, it's more of a console experience.
Finished Robocop: Rogue City
Surprise of '23 for me. Amazing game, especially from an unknown studio.

Cheapest price for P3R is 52,19€.
I hope something cheaper comes along. I rarely buy games at launch but when I do I usually find sub-50 prices.

I think there is a discussion to be had about how close the creatures look like pokemon, but people should drop the AI stuff since these designs have been seen since the initial announcement and that was before AI art tools were available. Hopefully the studio is pressured enough to use the money that they made from this and start changing up the designs and art.

I'll probably rebuy the game down the line but I want to see how it develops and if the developers don't drop support for it.

There's so much fighting between PS and Xbox folks on social media, when a game blows up on Steam and the game is only on one of the consoles and console folks are talking about acquiring the dev despite the popularity and sales is happening on Steam, not console.

Same thing with BG3. Explodes in popularity on Steam. Console people fight. PS players starts talking about acquiring Larian when Steam is the cause of the game's success.

Happens every time.

I have grown very tired of the console exclusivity and acquisition wars. Many people have dropped all pretense of caring about the games themselves and basically treat platforms as sports teams.

Steam is the Roman Colosseum and we are all just watching the indie games dook it out to see who will live to fight another day.

In some cases MS and PS are there in the VIP spectator seats just looking down and eyeing who to put on their roster.

I'm not sure about MS but with Sony they have YosP who is the one going to the indie events and checking out games. He likely also pays attention to steam.

They don't really do EA on PS and given the past stuff people mention about Pocketpair, there was likely not much faith there in the game.

MS meanwhile took a chance and it seems to be paying off to a degree.

Early Access games can be released on consoles....but you would likely have a situation similar to Risk of Rain 2, which I'm not sure if some one like MS or Sony would want to pay a lot of money to advertise a game as, yeah PC will be getting the updates first and everyone else will have to wait a few weeks to a month or more to get the new update but that's play because it's here.

Has EA been available back in 2019 and Notche was okay with putting Minecraft on Steam. Oh boy imagine the amount of money that could have been made there. Streaming and VoD was still in a weird place back then so things definitely would have been way different than they are now. Either way Minecraft went on to be HUGE. By the way the other Minecraft similar game was it very disappointing? I remember hearing that both games where in Alpha around the same time but the other game didn't really release anything for almost a decade before people actually got to play it and they didn't like it.

Now that they have money and are still in EA, they could (as other mentioned) try to change the character designs and see how that goes. You will still have people calling it Pokemon with guns, but hopefully it makes it way less obvious?
--------------

Also funny how a lot of people talking about Pocket monsters are only talk about that and not ARK. Hey yeah this game copies Pokemon, ahh ARK, yeah I have never played that game before anyway yeah you should go play these other Monsters raising games instead. What's makes them similar to Palworld other than just being able to capture and raise monsters? Nothing since they aren't even the same genre. If people wanted a good monster raise games they would just play easier versions of Pokemon instead or something.

Next thing Valve needs to do is add an official monster trainer/raiser genre on Steam.

I'm not hearing mentions of Monster Rancher for some odd reason though.

Anyway it sucks how it seem like ATLUS did not release a PC CE for P3R but for some reason they choose to do pre-order exclusive stuff.... I'm buying the CE but they will never give me the pre-order stuff in the future. It's really scummy of them to do that. But I guess it's better than being forced to buy it from their official store and paying a lot of money for shipping fees.
-----------
On Steam they call it Creature Collector.

People can't even seem to agree on the same term.

Wouldn't the correct term be Monster Trainer?

DQ V and Shin Megami where among some of the earliest games that had Monster taming as a game feature? It looks like Wizardry 4 also had a feature sort of like that, but it was not as robust as Shin Megami, since in Wizardry 4 you could only have the monster follow you around for 1 flor level, and they don't level up or anything. Or so I have read.

2021 post were pretty funny and had me smiling.

Time is a flat circle.

In 2021 we were able to predict 2024.

We are having the same discussions that we have in 2021 in 2024.

I just hope more people do look back at those post.

The whole AI thing is just meh, they ripped off design since day 1 and there just was not enough of a backlash at the time. So they didn't change that.

Also I was a fool back in 2021..... Since there is 1 Pal that is interested in having intercourse in the game...... Oh boy....

--------------------
I didn't check Twitter, but I did check gaming website and people's reaction to the initial Palworld announcement is very different.

In the west you got a LOOOOT of Pokemon with Guns stuff. In Japan you got very little of that, people did notice the Pokemon designs though and were already wondering if Nintendo would sue way back in 2021.

In Japan by far the biggest concern was Craftopia and were basically calling the dev out already. I'm not sure if it's true or not but they were claiming that Pocketpair was not even a Japanese company but a Chinese Shell company, which is why you can only really find information about their CEO who is Japanese (and who has a questionable past).

Crazy stuff actually.

So overall people new about the Pokemon stuff was back then, but in general not a lot of people in Japan were comparing it to Pokemon at all (just a few). In the west people did show concern based of Craftopia, but they didn't seem to show as much concern as people in Japan did in comment sections. People were even pointing out just how negative the Japanese commercials section was because it really boiled down to "but what about Craftopia"?

That 2008 Square Enix post vibes were actually present in Japan with people, saying they wouldn't support Pocketpair anymore since they just announced a new fans while still working on their current one.

Some even mentioned they will likely announce a new game while working on Palworld, which did happen and they are working on a Hallow knight game.

For the west anything that has monster trainer elements is already a Pokemon clone and is already going to get ravaged by Pokemon fans.

The 90s really poisoned people. There is nothing wrong with liking Pokemon, but there are people out there that make Pokemon their life (you know how you hear about Disney Adults, they are that bad). I blame Regan for that.

I got an ~100 MB update, but there's a lot of fud about what it actually is atm, will wait for it to be concrete. Works fine on my PC stilll but I didn't have any mods. Some folks say previously Enigma patched games still work with mods and just needed an update to the mods/frameworks/injectors or whatever though (not that it's good to update a game at the end of its life and bork mods that may never get updated of course, but at least that may not the intent and purpose of adding Enigma, maybe). Also Rise used Denuvo so maybe they're just replacing the company/products in all their games as I don't think it was patched to remove it, though this was an opportunity to do that rather than go about replacing it. But yeah, hard to know what's real and where the fomo/fud begins.

Wouldn't have been the case if it was a Bloodborne PC release.

The try hard ass Pokemon game would have gotten destroyed.
Just the announcement alone would crash Steam servers with people wishlisting the game.
