The Unicorn Overlord demo is straight up Ogre Battle except with massive, beautiful character models that are a staple of Vanillaware games. Super disappointing it isn't coming to PC as I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but I'm still playing the heck out of that sucker.
Probalby gonna run better on Ryujinx than on Switch. :p

I wonder if Vanillaware finally managed to make a game that doesn't overstay its welcome (for me). Every single game of theirs I played I really enjoyed 5 hours in... and I also haven't finished a single one.

Did you play 13 Sentinels?
I enjoyed this one pretty much to the end (and yeah, bounced off any of their earlier games after 1-2 hours).

Possibly. The Switch version seemed like it ran at 60 FPS. No idea about the resolution but it looked a bit fuzzy. I'm not Digital Foundry so take my layman analysis with a grain of salt.

That's true. Ironically, 13 Sentinels is probably their best game because it has the least amount of gameplay and doesn't get a chance to overstay its welcome.

From what I've read, UO is Vanillaware's most content filled game and there are over 60 classes. The character customization seems fairly in depth as well. Assuming it has good pacing and you don't, for example, unlock everything by the halfway point then maybe it can address the repetitive nature of their games.

I also read this. What I really want to know is whether this means that the built a game with the same length as their earlier ones but more variety in content, or used that extra content to make an even longer game.

Either way I'm confused by that attitude, and I genuinely wondered whether it's a deliberate strategy, along the lines of the "there is no such thing as bad publicity" school of thought. If so, it's certainly working on me, to an extent; I wouldn't have heard of either of those games otherwise. :shrugblob:

No wonder Xbox is branching out, the days of monolithic dedicated hardware based platforms are coming an end.
It's very simple to me.

Consoles sales have a ceiling, consoles like the PS5 is selling really well, but that means the ceiling will be hit faster than previous.

Console companies also want more more, they want "endless" growth, they can't have endless growth when there is a ceiling for consoles sales.

So they are branching out to PC and mobile to help them out on the quest for endless growth.
The biggest error the console makers did, was to focus on exclusives and the hardware itself, instead of the User experience or Platform.
The dozen of threads on otherforum about Xbox and Playstation the last few weeks came all down to:
"what reason do I have to buy a game for Playstation/Xbox if there are no exclusives"

Their customers are bound to the hardware and not the Platform. But isn't the hardware the Platform? No, The platform is your library, your friend list, your investment into your character/games, the tools that are available to widen, modify, and enhance your gaming.

Playstation, Microsoft, and Nintendo expect you to invest into a new generation and begin nearly from zero every time a new hardware comes around. They don't care about your old stuff. And BC is an afterthought.
Microsoft kinda came around and saw the issue and tried to mitigate it with Gamepass but they still make the same mistakes. They treat Gamepass as an Xbox product and not a Microsoft - on - every - screen - Product. Their windows Gamepass version is an abomination and the leaked numbers (10% of xbox, or so) speak for itself.

mid-gen updates are also an issue and they even further mask the decline of the console userbase. If people Upgrade from the base to the pro, Sony sold 2 consoles, but only 1 customer is buying games for your console, a customer who paid another 500 bucks that he won't use for games.

In this context I am really curious about what Nintendo will do with the Switch 2.
I believe they might actually try slightly harder to maintain library and ecosystem consistency.
I'm surprised about the 8inch screen that it is supposed to have, if one of the leaks/rumours is to be believed. That would be a massive increase in size, much larger than the Steam Deck. Maybe they stick to their tiny joy Cons for backwards compatibility, but would make for strange combination with a much large main body. Perhaps they also abandon the joycons and just have larger, more comfotable grips, but that would make backwards compat harder for any Switch titles that rely on joycons.

I'm not sure how someone could argue that they didn't. Yeah ER has legacy dungeons that are close to what the older games had but only a handful and not all of them are fantastic. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying all of the areas in past games were bangers but it's a numbers game really, when you have less of something and not all of them hit as hard as others do you feel that loss more than if the entire game was full of legacy dungeons.

Most of the game you spend traversing an open world that is mostly forests and fields full of enemies like all other open world games. If anything I think the dichotomy of ER's good legacy dungeons, like stormveil, makes the bland open world even harder to tolerate. I recognize this is mostly a me thing though everyone seems to love huge empty open worlds in games going by sales numbers of them all (I think pre-botw zelda fans can sympathize here). I just have a hard time understanding what makes these things so appealing to people over handcrafted linear/hub areas.

And before anyone says it yes I know Rebirth has a world that resembles an open one. It's pretty much the only worry I have with the game lol.

Ironically the PS4 Pro is what made me return to PC gaming as my main platform

I would honestly be ok with From treating Elden Ring like its World of Warcraft or something like that.

After all this is probably the most hyped I've ever seen the game industry be for a DLC since those earlier days of WoW.

Release another 40$ expansion in 2 years. And then maybe once more in 2028.

The description for Shadow of the Erdtree states that this land of shadow is a place other characters have been to and departed from. So its most likely a giant new island map they slap on to the south, west or east of the current game map. They can keep doing that with new DLC. Just add on and on.

So you wouldn't really need an Elden Ring 2 at that point. They could instead work on new ip or do Bloodborne 2, DS4, Sekiro 2, AC7 etc.

I somewhat agree that Elden Ring's level design is a often more listless and tiring experience than in previous games from them. Not to mention how many tombs were just copy-pasted, with a different ghost wall here or there. Even the boss at the end would be a copy from somewhere else in the game.

In their effort to make a big world, they overplayed their hand. A LOT. I'd say about 50% of my ER time was spent in annoyance rather than awe. My biggest gripe with modern gaming honestly. So many of these open worlds are filled with pit-stops to bloat your playtime rather than give you an interesting quest, or teach some story.

So on that note, I can't join the ER hype. I'll wait for at least 50% off sale, because unless they've tightened the experience up significantly I suspect I'm not really going to enjoy the expansion much.

Excited for this since I've heard great things about Breaker 3. Wanted to play a Gundam single-player action game
Given the IMMENSE popularity of Nintendo Switch in India (through grey market means), you would think they should start thinking about making official presence here.
These companies only see US, EU, JPN, China and nothing else.

apparently Unicorn Overlord is even coming out on Xbox, didn't know that until I saw that that was getting a demo on Friday

so I guess Vanillaware is just straight up releasing on everything but PC now

Not releasing games the same day on PC is not smart.
Re-releases after 2-3 years (if it ever comes), means not many would be interested.

I played 13 Sentinels 2 years ago when it came out on Switch because I have one and was interested in it and wasn't convinced it would ever come out on PC

I had hoped I wouldn't be quite so right about that though

Users of Intel's 13th Gen unlocked K-series processors such as Core i9-13900K, i7-13700K, are reporting stability issues when gaming even at stock clock-speeds. Hassan Mujtaba of Wccftech and Tom's Hardware have isolated the issues to power limit unlocks. Most Z690 and Z790 chipset motherboards include BIOS-level unlocks for the power limits, particularly the Maximum Turbo Power (interchangeable with PL2). By default, the i9-13900K and i7-13700K come with a PL2 value of 253 W, but you can get the motherboard to unlock this to unlimited, which basically tells the processor that it has 4096 W of power on tap, so not technically a "stock" configuration anymore.

Of course, neither your PSU nor your CPU VRM are capable of delivering 4096 W, and so the processor tends to draw as much power as it needs, to maintain the best possible P-core boost frequencies, before running into thermal limits. At stock frequencies with stock boost bins, unlocked power limits can drive the power draw of i9-13900K as far high as 373 W under a multithreaded load, in our testing, when compared to 283 W with the power limits in place. It turns out, that unlocking the power limits can come with long-term costs, besides the literal cost of electricity—the processor's stability with gaming workloads can degrade with certain hardware combos and settings.

The only other company outside of Vanillaware who insists at avoiding pc releases like them is Nintendo, let that sink in
Level 5 is planning to release at least one game on Steam, Atlus is all on Steam, Falcom (at least outside of Japan) is on Steam, NIS is on Steam, Spike Chunsoft is on Steam, indie doujin developers are on Steam (and obviously big publishers are all on Steam). No Vanillaware game is on Steam despite each of their western publishers having a big Steam presence (Xseed for Muramasa, NISA for Grim Grimoire, Atlus for 13 Sentinels and Unicorn Overlord). I can only speculate someone at Vanillaware really hates pc gaming, or doesn't want their games modded

Also, we're pleased to share that we are currently testing the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on PC to offer even more game variety in addition to the PS VR2 titles available through PS5. We hope to make this support available in 2024, so stay tuned for more updates.

FF7 Remake was visually stunning, but a complete snore for me. I played it for 7.5 hours and then never touched it again.
