I get where he's coming from as an executive as he wants recurring income, but the F2P and mobile market is just as volatile as the AAA space. You've got your live service kings with Roblox, Fortnite, Call of Duty etc and everyone else fights for scraps. He should already know that due to how Multiversus played out.
Everyone wants their forever game. But the problem is that it becomes a literal black hole of resources. Look at how every activision studio ended up being a COD studio or a support studio (for COD) or how epic ends up sending the studios they buy to the fornite mines.

Wasted 7 years of Rocksteady

Now WB gonna waste another 7 years making terrible mobile and f2p games

So that will be 14 years wasted when they could have made so many good singleplayer games.

Reminder they put out 4 Arkham singleplayer games in a 6 year span. Even if we double the dev time you are still looking at missing out on 4-5 games over a 14 year span.

That Wonder Woman game might just be the last good thing they release for a long while. Assuming it even gets released.

The entire AAA industry is lead by people that don't understand videogames, and it's not helped by the data analysts either.
It's always about trying to ape the competitors that are successful, or be as focus tested as can be, never even underestimating why and how trends happen.

And now the entire licensed IP formula is dying because who knew that paying more and more money to another company that you can't say no to would siphon any profit made.
Let's fire a few thousand more, then we're going to make GaaS and mobile games, because surely that will work and be cheap, the competition dosn't spend 2 billions and hundreds of millions every year on support, right?

Never take any risks with small projects, they could fail!
Instead spend half a billion and eight years for an obsolete clone. And spend now spend billions on clones of games that are already has been by the time the design phase starts.

Just astonishing how companies are lead by people that don't even know how money works, they only see stocks rising and going down.
Frankly, that's not even that surprising when you consider how the market is so disconnected from reality...

150gb. Textures better be crisp af.
Looking forward to playing this at Very High. The specsheet doesn't mention 4K60fps with DLSS/FSR, so I wonder if that means it's native? I'm not hopeful, but if it is that means I can probably switch DLSS on and get much higher framerates.

WB about to learn that mobile and free to play is somehow even more cutthroat than single player AAA.

actual brain dead monkeys running these game companies.

This isn't even a capitalism problem this is the result of promoting absolute fucking morons to higher positions and not ever firing them.

I know WB isn't a monopoly, but they have no idea what a good product looks like, and they're definitely run by morons, as Jobs described. In fact, I don't think Steve Jobs' idea that this only happens to monopolies is true, because you see it up and down in late stage capitalism.

I'm not sure about every other country, (maybe in some places in EU as well) but in general as crazy as it sounds it's very possible in the US to fail upwards.

I've visited some tech companies in when I was first starting college and we visited places like Western Digital (the hard drive guys) they showed us their offices and stuff and we also learned about their CEOs of the past and stuff and just crazy stuff.

No one wants to hold accountability. The shareholders only want more money, worst case scenario, just fire the CEO, and get a new one. All while also giving the CEO a lot of money before leaving the company.

The thing is that I don't think people actually want to be CEOs, people that truly love a company and want to be a part of the process don't really want the position so that means that someone else has to take it.

The whole CEO thing does get made fun of a lot. There was this show on NBC about this one lady that becomes CEO of basically Ford/GM. The reason she become CEO was because she was previously the CEO of a big Pharma company. Which she made a ton of money for them, but also got people addicted to drugs and all sorts of very unethical stuff. Also the only heir to the company is basically an idiot that doesn't want to do anything and just wants to take credit for stuff he doesn't do. In parts of the show she doesn't really know what to do, she doesn't even drive a car at all.

Anyway, one the show is a type of work place comedy like the office and Superstore. At least the way the shows CEOs is that they are pretty much idiots that don't know what they are doing, damaging the company, where their big pay out of stuff like stock options for the company will be given to them so long as they are able to stay in the position of CEO for at least 3-5 years. So they aren't really looking long term for the company beyond just those years. The only time the CEOs seems to get "serious" seems to be damage control. Since they seem to have some experience of that from their previous jobs. But that's about it. Poops hit the fan, time to take care of stuff that will potentially cost the company hundreds of millions of dollars.

I'm not sure if that show got a season 2. I found it entertaining.

Also the only time the CEO does try to do stuff seems to be when shareholders gets upset, and even then they don't have to do stuff right away. Some time even just lie to shareholders. And then later tell them, oh our projections didn't hit their target. Those were our estimates to begin with.

Mmh, imho Kyougar is forgetting that Rorona has some risqué elements, too. Though very rare, to be fair.
You've still got a tentacle cg and some formula ingredient requiring milking some peculiar animal.

That being said, and without having played Riza (who got time for that ?) I can totally imagine the new series being more pervy and yes, indeed, Rorona may be the apex of OldAtelierDarkSoulsOfTimeManagement.
Rorona is excellent anyways. People should play it. Great cast of characters.
I love that the literal first few pictures of Rorona on Steam don't show anything about the game besides embarrassed girls blushing. 😅

Depends on how MANLY you are.
Are you manly enough to be seen with Barbie dolls?
If yes, then the earlier Ateliers are no problems. It is basically 75% cute girls in frilly dresses cooking stuff.

Ayesha and Eschatology are my favorites.
I don't care about dolls and stuff, but I care that my daughter might sneak up behind me while I've got noise cancelling on. 😅

(Thanks for the replies you two! This is all much more expensive than anticipated, so... in eternal wishlist they go!)

For a very narrow and specific definition of "productivity stuff". Maybe.

Sorry, I really couldn't let this go uncontested. People here cry about Nintendo and Sony being assholes (rightfully so), but Apple is their equivalent in general computing (which might be worse since general computing is more important than consoles).
Yeah, that and the fact that they don't really support Vulkan or up to date OpenGL, and a ton of old software just straight up doesn't work anymore. Even for recent Razer peripherals like their macro pads, you have to use third-party software to get working.

So many old iOS mobile games from the 32-Bit ARM era are just completely lost to time too.

My advice would be to try and change the way you look at gaming. I can understand how being online too much can shape one's perspective but I honestly feel that it is a great time to be a gamer, maybe the best it has ever been. So the internet is miserable, who cares? Seriously, who fucking cares? Why are you letting dumb people online affect you instead of laughing at them? As for Nintendo, the danger they pose to emulation is nothing more than a wet fart.
I wasn't clear enough, Internet being miserable is Google being a tire fire and AI articles being everywhere, oh and the debatable state of the press. I wasn't talking about people being dumb online with this part of my post.

To be fair, this is the publisher fishing for weebs with the pics, I totally agree that the game can flirt with perviness, but keep in mind that this is a very long game and the bad examples I cited are only two. One tentacle CG in bad taste (though nothing R rated) and a potion requiring semen (treated as a joke because, the girls sure don't know how to or want to get the ingredient).
Oh yeah, the translation team found it funny to name a character Esty Dee, too. Morons.

There is surely a debate to be had here, on this specific game trilogy, about how demeaning or empowering it is to a girl. Frankly, the two bad scenes apart (ok, let's include the beach suits), I honestly think it's pretty empowering.

This is Koei Tecmo, bruh, so this automatically costs a kidney. That's the rule.

TLDR: Disney upping licensing fees on all upcoming (some current) Lucasfilm/Marvel/Disney to force developers to back out of deals/cancel projects so Disney themselves won't be the one to pull the trigger and pay the penalties. More Disney IP-related games will likely be cancelled
If all of the points are true then it might just mean that Epic will be the only ones that will be making Disney licensed games in the future since they have a 0% licensing fee and everyone else will have 22% (33% fee for the currently licensed games) fee:

Epic would be the only developer to have a 0% licensing fee because of Disney's partnership with Unreal in many of it's projects

Thanks this is all super helpful!

I don't particularly care of scant dresses. That's basically the norm of anything targeting little girls anyway.
Plus, me and the wife are fundamentally weebs, we brought the daughter to Japan and have not shied away from going action figure shopping in the sketchiest stores with her. 😄

I'm more concerned about male gaze, or awkwardly sexualized behaviour.

Oh yeah, the translation team found it funny to name a character Esty Dee, too. Morons.
JFC, this alone would be enough to make me not want to play the game, but I guess the Yakuza team can't possibly translate everything.

(assuming that's true) I doubt they can put resources in anything that's not fornite, so that would be the end of licensed games (which considering how most probably didn't make enough money to justify the costs, it would be for the better)

For general computing and plenty of productivity stuff, they’re the best computers out there.
I would agree to this, once Asahi Linux supports the entire hardware stack of modern Apple machines and I can put an actual OS on there, not Tim Apples golden cage. Apples ARM chips are crazy good. But I would never want to use their locked down software on any machine I own.

If Ghost of Tsushima really gets announced tomorrow, that still leaves plenty of room this year for GoW: Ragnarok and TLoU Part II. That would be Sony's best year on PC for me so far.

I frankly don't find this very plausible, mainly because I can't imagine any publisher would be willing to sign a licensing agreement that allowed the licensor to change the terms and significantly increase its share of royalties even on projects that were supposed to be covered by the original agreement, not even just to renegotiate terms on renewal. The very point of those contracts is to hammer out things like that in advance!

The only way I can read this that might make some sort of sense in a bunch of exec's head is that instead of spending 4-5 years on a single big-budget AAA singleplayer game and hope it sells, they instead use the same budget to shit out multiple cheap F2P mobile cashgrabs with a popular IP paint, fleece a bunch of poor souls, run and repeat and maybe get a lucky success with a sustained long-term revenue as a bonus.
I'm not sure that is a less "volatile" strategy than AAA so who tf knows.

I only want to add this specific issue is an old holdover from the original NISA translation of Rorona, and let's just say I'm not a big fan of their translations from that period. Long story short, outside of shitty STD jokes and random name change I really disliked the insane maount of swearing they added to games about cute girls doing cute things. There is nothing that takes me out of playing something like Neptunia and hearing one of the girls tell another "shut up you bitch". From Ayesha onward Koei did the translations and this problem no longer exists

Even without discount, Humble Monthly is worth it imo. 8 games for less than the cost of a single Fortnite skin...

At this point, I feel like these monthlies must almost be imbalanced on purpose. I've been subscribed for years (with a few pauses when I get around to it), and there are frequently months where there is not a single game I really am all that excited about in a bundle.

But then there are months like this one, where even just the indie games could carry it, at least IMHO. Afterimage was actually one of my favourite games recently, and I've heard great things about Citizen Sleeper.
And then they still also include e.g. Nioh 2 in the same bundle, which up until today cost twice the bundle price when it was at its cheapest on sale.

Maybe they think (or even have data confirming) that having really great months interspersed with (relative) stinkers is better for their numbers than having consistently good but not great months.

They’ve been going for years at this point, and they’ve tried a lot of different things over the years, so I think it’s almost guaranteed they’ve got “good enough” data to steer them… until the direction of the steer stops working and then we’ll see them trying lots of things again.

And yes, Citizen Sleeper is extremely high quality. One of the best story-driven games I’ve played in years, and if you don’t have it I recommend grabbing it in the bundle and playing it straight away.

Dragon's Dogma 2 looks promising, but I still don't understand why some people are complaining it's just like the first game.

Just to take the last week, are people complaining that FF7 Rebirth is not a rogue lite card game?
Are they complaining that the impeding announcement of Ghosts of Sushi 2 won't be Ubiclone number 8751679?
That Suicide Squad is a carbon copy of the other Batman games? ...that Thi4f was too similar to the old games?

Somehow I don't think so! Just baffling why Dragon's Dogma always get hit with that specific complaint.

To be fair, Japanese developers were making peanuts compared to the global job market (in countries with similar development / cost of living). And that's not even specifically compared to the US bay area salaries (where a lot of the layoffs were) -- those are another factor 2 higher.

(FWIW, we absolutely couldn't do PH3-quality ports at our current prices while offering US bay area salaries)

Also, the yen is significantly down in the international comparison compared to e.g. 2020.
All that said, this is of course great for Capcom and their employees and should be applauded -- but when comparing it globally some global context is necessary.

Pre-orders for an unannounced S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Legends of the Zone Trilogy for PlayStation 4 have gone up at Japanese retailers like Biccamera, Neowing, and Rakuten Books. It will launch on June 27 in Japan for 6,578 yen.
The three-game collection includes S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, and marks the first time the survival horror first-person shooter series has been ported to consoles.

More people having the ability to play STALKER is a good thing. Although, I am curious how the controls would translate to a gamepad. I tried playing CoP on the SteamDeck and that was not a great time.
