So I bought a magic trackpad, it's actually pretty good, I didn't replace my mouse with it but I use it as a secondary device, also installed bettertouchtool so I mapped most of the shortcuts I use from the keyboard.

My MacBook Pro 2017 had pang and smoke today. Scared that it would burn my home down I went to Apple Store and they took it to investigate. Curious to know what happened. Seems it’s not the battery, they said the smell would be different, they suspect it was a component based on the smell.
Also curious since it’s out of warranty, why did they take it to investigate? It says on the paper that is going for repair but the price is 0. Hmh

So the new iPhone 16e is priced at $599, lmao, guess I'm keeping my android phone til it dies, it's still pretty decent but the display was flickering every once in a while, and the only alternative for stylus phone is the flagship Samsung one, so I thought if I'm gonna ditch the pen and go for a cheaper device, I may as well try a "budget" iOS phone, but guess I won't.

Thats sad to see, when they priced the new Mac mini even cheaper than before it was a good sign, but seems they didnt do it in their other departments.:(

Yeah the iPad Magic keyboard is a GOATed upgrade, highly recommended. Although it makes me wish I had the 13 inch iPad though.

Depending on what you do, it basically makes the iPad a laptop replacement. But I'm happy with my 11 inch iPad for that - I have an actual laptop if I need a bigger screen.

I'm not the biggest Apple lover, but it's hard to deny that they make the best tablets without any question.

the iPad magic keyboard is way too expensive and I think I'm better off using a normal keyboard (the logi ones support 3 devices) with my set up, and the keyboard I got is a bit smaller so it still is pretty capable of being a portable keyboard. I can see it being quite good if you use ipad as main more, but I'm also just not a laptop person since I rarely travel so this is the most cost efficient and saving more space.

Can’t deny it is very expensive. I thought about it for 6 months if I’m completely honest. But one day last week I went like, fuck it!

I sent my broken laptop to recycling. Feels weird being without a laptop. But I don’t have as much need for it now as before. I still have my dual setup of two Mac minis. Also have an old iPad but don’t really use much. Not sure what to do on it.

Thinking of grabbing the 14” M4 Pro MBP to consolidate my M2 mini and Air into one device.

I’d consider sticking with the Air, but my desk setup is dual display, so I’m thinking one powerful system than two not-as-powerful ones is best. Plus the extra umph of the Pro will help when I’m trying to run Civ VI.

Will cost about £2k, minus what I can sell my current Macs for.

I could get the regular M4 MacBook Pro for £1600 and have a good time for most of my tasks, but at that point I might as well wait for the 15 inch M4 Air and have the bigger laptop screen.

The £400 seems worth it.

Im super happy with my Mac mini M4, just would need an Air too to be completely set.
This is how I was with the M2 Macs I have.

I bought one (the Air, I think) and decided I needed the other to fill the gap (dual displays).

With the money I spent on both, I could’ve bought an M2 Pro MBP and not have two separate devices.

And in all honesty, having two Macs is a pain in the ass. You have to do everything twice, like installing apps and updates, hoping iCloud or whatever other cloud provider you have correctly syncs stuff, and so on.

I’d rather have the one system these days.

I used to run two screens on my old M1 mini, it worked having a type c to hdmi cable. But now I run my M1 on one screen and the M4 on the other screen. Since I do different things on both thankfully I dont really need to worry about installing double. And using just one mouse and keyboard is pretty smooth to use on both.

Yeah, my current M2 mini is running my dual displays right now. It does a good job of it, but I’m unsatisfied with the fact that I have two Macs that essentially do the same thing: one portable and one stationary.

If your computers serve different purposes, that’s a different story. For me, it’s one purpose across two devices.

I’m pretty close to pulling the trigger on a MacBook Pro. I’m wondering if it’s worth seeing if Apple surprise with the Air, or if I just suck it up and get the Pro.

Decided to pull the trigger.

14” Space Black
M4 Pro
24gb RAM
512gb SSD

John Lewis were offering £230-ish off the standard price, which is hard to resist. The savings plus the extra cash I’ll get selling my two Macs on eBay or Vinted will more than make up for the hassle of doing it.

I’ll be doing a fair few things, including:
  • playing Civ 6 (maybe 7 if I can bring myself to play it), and some other games that work well on Mac
  • writing and content design
  • prototyping services in Figma, HTML and CSS
  • graphic design and photo editing in Affinity apps
  • learning coding
  • playing about with LLMs
  • life admin for my mother
Gaming and LLMs are the main gamechangers for the M4 Pro CPU.

yeah i kinda get it, actually why i went with an ipad instead of a laptop, i don't actually think ipad can match a mac laptop, but it does things different and support an apple pencil, otherwise having 2 of the same thing is a bit redundant.

Yeah, that complicated matters further. I have an iPad Pro with the keyboard that works as an ultra portable.

So really, do I need a MacBook Air, or can I justify a faster machine that more often than not stays at home?

I think that was the choice for me. The MacBook Pro needs to be flexible around my home, but I won’t take it out loads (just enough to need a laptop, really).

For day to day portability, I have the iPad.

Feels pretty good to slice out a whole machine from my setup.

Glad I didn’t wait. The 15” Air is not doing much for me. I mean, the value is amazing, but I’m not sure I’d want to drive dual displays with a laptop that has no active cooling.

No regrets. The pro motion display itself makes a big difference. But everything is just... snappier. And it's not the typical new computer snappiness - I wiped my Mac mini and that still feels just incredibly sluggish compared to this. I don't know how to describe it. It's just a pleasure to use - like when I was running Windows 11 on my Ryzen 5800X and only did word processing on it. Totally overkill, but everything just runs buttery smooth.

A week with the Pro, and I’m still in love.

This is an incredible machine. My work are giving me a TB4 docking station for the new upgraded laptops they’re giving us, so I’ll be hooking that up to my desk setup next, bringing the number of USB-C cables to connect down to one.
