Elaborating further on Nintendo

This shit is seeping into PC gaming as well. We've seen countless people say about the EGS exclusives that 'thats the way consoles are, whats the problem?'

Well, fuck your consoles, buddy. Just because you accept a lesser service at a expensive price tag means that that's the way things should be. And when PC gaming becomes more popular, companies will feel free too implement these boneheaded solutions, since the fanbase are used to it.
Exactly. This is one of the reasons people prefer PC. Making it more like consoles is not what we want.

Alright, so after playing through Abzu, Guacamelee 2 and ReCore via Game Pass, and trying a bunch of others, I think I'll end my time with it now.
I think I fundamentally prefer to have games in my library to play them at my own pace. The subscription is just always at the back of my mind and it affects my enjoyment negatively.
I also never got the Steam Controller working for any of the games, though apparently Microsoft is going to get rid of their locked down WindowsApps folder in favor of something more open, so I guess that will change in due time.
I appreciate it existing though, since it's definitely great value and it makes Timmy-boy cry because no one in their right mind will buy their egscloosies if they can play them via Game Pass instead.
Yeah. I'm a bit annoyed about the fact that I can't move my ReCore saves to a Steam copy, I'm actually enjoying that game. I guess I'll try to finish it on UWP.

oh, does it still have the weird sound distortion? I should try it again.
Did you mean audio stutter or crackling? Yeah, I got a little of that. I had to set windows power management to high performance and tinker around with the audio settings a bit.
true. I like Asahi and Kirin, but in America these are imports. They're hard to find and expensive as a result.

Usually have to raid the Asian supermarkets near me when they go on discount. :p
I cut down on my drinking since I need to lose weight but I love Asahi Soukai and Sapporo. It's pretty common down here and usually can be had for less than $50 a slab (4x6 packs)

Elon Musk bringing drama into the nier community i want to fucking die nothing is sacred anymore in this god forsaken hellworld kill me

I wish I was strong like this. Instead I'm so pessimistic and always thinking about how much everything sucks... the moment I find something I like I hopelessly cling to it and always go overboard. I hate this aspect of myself, and it leads to all kinds of troubles. Like whaling on gacha, shopping for the rush(happy chemicals in my brain whenever I spend money lol), or getting addicted to MMO's.

I know that feel. Often when i really like something i have to go all-in; and then i eventually grow completely exhausted from that new interest and begin hating it because of that.

Thankfully i can moderate myself somewhat nowadays, although i have no idea how i achieved that.

Line ok fair enough the combat in Kao leaves much to be desired esp. with how the hitboxes/hurtboxes work, but it didn't detract too much from my enjoyment. Kao's attack animations are nice but for them not to connect properly is disappointing.

So, will we have a Steam Summer Sale Hidden Gems / Game Recommendations - thread?
I'm sure someone will create it. But, like always, if someone doesn't do it before you, do it yourself. :highfiveblob:

It's always a great way to hear about some smaller indie games, or to learn about heavily discounted packs.

I guess we all have something like that, def can relate to buy shit just to feel happy.

I've never become addicted to MMO's but I'm afraid that will change with PSO2 lol
Thankfully PSO2 can be rather casual friendly (especially in the end-game, though of course there's also stuff players can do that would last several hours).

The main draw of the game are emergency quests, a type of quest that can either happen randomly at the start of each hour or can be scheduled in advance (there's a new schedule for EQs every week). These emergency quests last around 10 to 40 minutes depending on the quest, so a more casual player can pretty much just play a single emergency quest session and feel like they've accomplished enough in the game for the day.

I have been playing WoW ten years since vanilla to various degrees, from raiding 5/7 to just levelling characters and deleting them once I reached max level and starting anew to multiboxing, pet collecting, pvp/arena, grinding/farming and playing the auction house (god how I enjoyed playing the auction house and flipping items, I don't know how many people I fleeced).
I only quit when I had to move for a few years in a place where my connection was so bad I didn't enjoy it anymore.
I had a lot of fun back then, I wouldn't go back now because most of my muscle memory is gone and I should start from scratches, also there really aasn't been any mmo that sucked me in to that degree, what I really liked in WoW was being very solo friendly and having all those activities to do regardless of being in a guild, with a group of friends or not.

I have this exact same problem. It's why $10 is too expensive for a gamepass -- I go through streakes where I play PC games every day, then maybe weeks where I don't touch the PC. $5/mo is cheap enough where I can accept wasting money, but $10 is too much. And there's definitely a psychological burden with having the subscription, where I actually get annoyingly preoccupied with making sure I'm using it and getting my money's worth. Overall, it's a fairly negative experience.

On separate topic, speaking of the consolization of PCs, this is a struggle that's been going on for literally decades. MS and other companies have always wanted to lock down the BIOS, make schemes where you can only run "trusted" apps on your PC, blah, blah, blah. They haven't been able to do it yet due to customer outrage, so keep pushing back loudly. It works.

ReCore is alright bordering on really good until you hit a 'sorry, pls collect x more orbs' wall and 'x' is A LOT higher than the amount of orbs you'll probably have. It forces you to go back through old dungeons and find them in the enviroment. Completed the game anyway but the second half is mostly padding.

I was planning to play it next. Hearing about that padding is a bit disappointing. :(
I'll probably give it a go soon either way.

Speaking of Microsoft games, I just noticed there's finally a publisher page for Microsoft/Xbox Game Studio's on Steam (there wasn't one not long ago):

If you plan on going all in on idling, why not, but it's too late now for the next sale if you have ton of cards.
If you are like me and quickly fed up with the process, don't. I earned some spare change and fucked up my play time. Yeah.

At least the Definition Edition streamlines a lot of stuff and loading is non-existent on PC. Can't imagine how bad it must've been initially on Xbox where you had insane load times and were forced to go back to your base to change loadouts/bots (needed to get certain orbs cores).

Damn I completely forgot about Max and Lococycle. Two games that I was somewhat interested in the past but ended buried back then. Anyway, I hope to see that page getting a lot more of games soon. Fable 2 / 3, State of Decay 2, Rare Replay, Forza...

Same thing. Now it's a bit to late (I have about 1.5K cards to drop) and I don't want to mess my playtimes more than I have done already. I just wish I could play more games with cards :grinning-face:

I don't see a need for it personally, but I think it can be made to recommend or point towards certain deals or price discussion.
Yeah I could see that, just a thread for deals that might not be on steam that beat its price or something.

This will be our very first big sale as a community. Though I don't remember there was a Winter sale thread back then.

So who knows?
I think we kept everything to this thread last time lol. but i might be wrong

Yup that is the biggest flaw of sub services and it doesn't just extend to gamepass. Back in the day I saw so many people leave WoW because they wanted to take a few days or weeks off of the game but as long as they were subbed it was always in the back of their mind itching at them. They felt a need to justify the $15 a month in terms of playing X number of hours a month and if they didn't hit this made up threshold they "wasted" money.

Sure gamepass is great value...if you're using it all of the time. If it's sitting there for most of the month as you play other stuff you're just throwing away $10 and while that's not that much it adds up over time. There's a reason why corporations (in all forms of media) want to move to subs and it's not because it makes them less money. They have mastered human psychology and know what most of us are likely to do and that is to stay subbed and pay full price and forget about it most of the time.

I don't see why people would sub for months/years for gamepass, and end up like people say, months where you will barely touch it. I'm just going too treat it like a HB monthly thing, if there's enough games at that time worth paying 10 bucks or whatever the price ends up being, I'll pay and go through them that month, then just go back to play games on Steam etc, until there's a new game or a few new games worth paying 10bucks for.

Downside is unlike the HB monthly, you don't keep the games, but it's not a problem since I'll probably use it for single players that I'll never return to. Like right now, I think Metrox Exodus alone was worth the price of admission ( not counting the fact that it's just $1 even for this month, I'd have easily paid 10 bucks ) and I'm playing Hellblade as well ( actually started with this one! Pretty good game so far ), and will play Vampyr, CrossCode, Sunset Overdrive, Void Bastards and a few others.

Humble Monthly is a sub and a bundle; the sub isn't mandatory. Gamepass and PS Plus are subs that serve as 'rental services' for lack of a better term :X

Anyways, playing through Casltevania Bloodlines and I'm play as Eric. I like his high jump and his spear weapon but unless it is because of his moveset, you have to hold a direction while jumping to have him jump in that direction, and you can move him after pressing jump. This can be annoyingly tricky in some sections @_@
It is a visually lovely game and has a nice soundtrack, a really solid Genesis/MD game IMO.

Yup, exactly. Just prepare your list of games you want to play, sub for a month, beat them, and move on. That's at least my plan.

For me, it really doesn't matter if I suspend the sub often. For example, I subscribed to gamepass PC for $1. I downloaded Turing Test, Gears 4, Thumper, and Wolfenstein 2. Seems like a great deal. I started with Turing Test, because it's fairly short. About halfway through the game, I started getting distracted wondering how much was left -- it's actually fairly short, but even so, I projected it will take me about a week to complete it given my usual time available for gaming. And that is just the base game -- if you want to do all the optional content, it's more time. Wolfenstein 2, which is next, is maybe twice as long.

So let's say I don't manage to get through Wolfenstein 2, and I have to extend my sub. At the regular price of $10/mo, I've now paid $20 for Turing Test and Wolfenstein 2. I'd honestly have a way better experience buying those outright on Steam after they go on sale and play them at leisure without having to feel any pressure to get them done or skip content. Oh, and let's not forget that sometimes games will just drop off the gamepass.

And during all this, I'm neglecting games I really want to play on my Switch, because those aren't time limited. This is why I also really hate any kind of time-based mission in games -- don't fucking rush me. It's an instant turn off.

So, the experience with sub services probably varies a lot depending on the person. I have so many things on my backlog that it doesn't make sense to pay monthly for more games when I can just wait for them to go on sale withough putting up with the psychological time/money pressure of a subscription. If you don't care about that stuff, a sub is probably an awesome fit.

Final haul. I spent around $40-45 this sale on GOG, hopefully next Winter Sale the rest of the stuff I wishlisted would get a better discount. I grabbed most of the EA games I'd wanted like Crysis and Dead Space, can't be too sure with whatever dumb DRM EA slapped onto these games behaving properly nowadays :V

EDIT: Made a few more purchases so I spent a total of $55 cash this sale.

I am not sure whether this is actually due to the subscription constraint. Turing Test is not a great game. The setting is intriguing and that is why you want to try it. However, despite being short, the game features repetitive puzzles and a story which does not capture your attention. If you had bought the game, I believe that you would have had the same experience. Time is limited, there are many games out there, all competing for your attention, so at some point, you have to drop the less enticing games so that you can move forward.

So let's say I don't manage to get through Wolfenstein 2, and I have to extend my sub.
After a month, if you have dropped Turing Test and have not played through Wolfenstein 2, you have to suspend, not extend. ;)

And during all this, I'm neglecting games I really want to play on my Switch, because those aren't time limited. This is why I also really hate any kind of time-based mission in games -- don't fucking rush me. It's an instant turn off.

If you have games which you want to play on Switch or in your PC backlog, then subscribing now does not make sense for you.

Only sub if you want to play ONE of the GamePass games RIGHT NOW,

Just finished Armored Warriors, from the Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle.

The game is a lot of fun! It has a very decent variation of weapons and accessories that your mech can pick up (arms, legs, ...), and it changes gameplay quite a bit, especially for a classic beat'em up.

Fans of beat'em ups, and/or arcade games, should consider buying this in an upcoming sale, since it's a very enjoyable package, and I think the price is very reasonable, especially considering you get 7 games.

And, their previous Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara release (which I remind you is a pack of licensed games, so it's bound to be removed when licensing expires) is also a lot of fun, and well worth a purchase:
