They doubled down on Discord and started saying “entitled gamers are not our target audience” and “anyone who says our post was rude or condescending weren’t going to buy the game anyway”

Like yikes way to alienate your fanbase. I guess wanting to buy a game in my native currency is too much entitlement for them to handle and apparently my original plans to buy the game day 1 were just a big lie. Thank you devs!
I've been following this game since it was announced and would've bought it on Day 1. It's been near the top of my Steam wishlist since it was added to Steam. They have no idea what they are talking about.

Unless they plan to sell all their future games exclusively to Tweeney, this may come back to bite them in the ass. Won't say I hope that's the case, but I certainly wouldn't shed a tear if it was.
Oh it will when they'll try to make a new game and Tweeney will tell them "weeeel sorry but your previous game sold like crap so we're not interested. You know, managing a store with a 12% cut is hard so we need to make compromises. Sorrynotsorry."

Good luck then.

Didn't Sweeney himself say that at some point they'll stop financing exclusives at this rate because it's not sustainable in the long run?

Well, they certainly aren't doing any favor to themselves.
I really don't like being rude to people but among all those who went the Epic way they're a special kind of stupid, especially the one handling their social media/discord/blog.

I mean they just tweeted "Anyone hear about Ninja?" like if his exclusivity would somewhat prove they did the right thing.

Oh, and they also retweeted the guy who worked for PC Gamer (IGN now, apparently).

You couldn't make this stuff up.

Even if your 1200 Patreon subscribers - which, by the way, you announced this on the first of the month specifically to sucker them into another month’s payment before it was too late - were only giving $1 each, you’re still making US minimum wage. Which is not a livable wage and we should increase it, but on top of a console exclusivity deal, and the support of a publisher, is not an insignificant amount of money. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that you moved to Seattle a few months ago?

Imagine fucking it up and still going forward.
Even more: imagine dozens of other indie devs liking and retweeting their comments.

At this moment, I don't feel like spending my money on games anymore. At least not until Epic opens up their store for games which aren't part of their exclusivity deals. Because only then it becomes clear if independent devs and publishers are also supportive of Epic without getting loads of money.

These people are complete idiots. I have backed over 150 games via crowdfunding and strongly believe in supporting the medium. In their noble an enlightened minds, they might think they are only pissing off "angry gamers" but this ends up pissing off people like me too who enjoy helping out devs. The EGS stuff has really exposed the fallacy of believing the "little guys" are different from big "greedy" publishers; the second they get a chance to do scummy shit they hop on it like an EA would.

But hey, keep telling yourself that angry kids are the only ones who could possibly disagree with you.

ETA: Anyone remember the good old days when people asked you to support them and appreciated that rather than trying to shame/blame you for not supporting them?

Yes, this is the saddest part of the whole Epic stuff. I also used to support an awful lot of indie projects in the false belief that they embodied some sort of long lost ethical integrity. Sadly the whole “we’re not like those greedy triple a publishers” argument revealed itself as “we’re not like those greedy triple a publishers because we never got the chance to.”

They don't give a fuck. They have enough Epic money that they can get by without selling a single copy, so if this ends up hurting some other innocent dev, tough luck. Not their problem.

One thing that comes out as crazy disingenuous in people supporting the EGS and saying it’s just another launcher and just another account to create is that we live in a data driven era and we’re well aware that our data is monetized, bought and sold by the companies we subscribe to so, while you can give this issue a different priority and you might also think “well you’re already subscribed to one and they’re selling your data already, why can’t you subscribe to ten more?”, dismissing all as “just another account” when it’s been proven dozens of times and will be proven dozens more that they’re not “just another account” is pure bs.

I mean noone sane would have an issue of seeing a company of two getting Sweeney money for their game. Most good people would empathize.

And most good people that are devs wouldn't disingenuously attack their community as a preemptive response to a supposed "false sense of entitlement" anger. It makes no sense.

They could have said something like:
"We got funded to make our game better but we had to agree to a limited time exclusivity with the good folks over at EGS. Thank you for your support and understanding." would have closed the issue at hand.
There would be some angry reactions but there would be no hassle.

Unless they made that provocative blog post as a method to gain visibility for their work.

Which makes them two times assholes.

And now they are doing damage control on their discord. Let them be with the other useful idiots that agree with the spirit of their reasoning.
The rest of us should ignore them and be done with them, if they are of some worth to Sweeney then they are no worth to decent people.

Life is hard and development is hard. People all over claw for scraps of stability and self fulfillment. Indie devs are just like the rest of us. I can totally understand them going to bat for each other even if more than a few probably dm them about "unforced errors".

From the side of a provider of goods, you can easily get jaded after one too many pushy and demanding/insulting customers. I see it on the daily. However, because its an environment where there are no barriers, no one higher up you have to answer to or come to your support, you end up exposed and without meaningful support. You cant turn around and blame the only ones you feel are in your corner, you pass the blame of an oversaturated, cut throat and gold fished brained market to the dredges of the custo.er base. Thieves, loudmouths, children and I'm sure it feels good to strike out. Hey, it's an easy way to say "this is why".

Common sense just failed today and the huge group of quiet gamers (fuck you, I'm taking that term back) got hit when you lashed out. The worst thing is that the shitty elements will just laugh in your face, say fuck you too, then harass and steal more.

I'm going to just assume that everyone on the dev side involved let emotions get the best of them and they just forgot the view from the other side of the screen.

And if the response is anything to go on, I think this will be a teachable moment. Also fuck twitter and Reddit is full of lies.

I'm so tired of being challenged to justify my dislike for EGS. Do you know what? I don't actually need a reason not to shop somewhere. If I said I don't shop at Walmart would I need to provide a Google Doc spreadsheet of reasons why?

Fuck off.

To be honest I'm starting to dislike indie developers (from a general perspective) more than AAA publishers these days and they are the ones more likely to cut off their noses to spite their faces

"Let us on Steam and stop curating as we can't get on!!'
Valve opens gates and makes it much easier
'No! Not that many! Valve needs more curation!'
Indie devs get bags of cash from Epic
'Ah we love money and sure it's only another launcher anyway!'
Customers actually complain and make their displeasure known
Pikachushock.jpg and act like cunts about it, like you're owed my fucking money.

It's pretty fucking funny to be honest

You know, I can symphatise with developers whom needed money because developing isn't exactly cheap. But most of them (if not all) has the same tone of "you should be grateful we're making this game for you/it's just another launcher" which doesn't help their disposition towards potential customers, as if those money bags will last forever.

Pissing off your customers won't do them any favours. A fact which seems to have entirely lost of them. If they need us as customers, then they will need to earn it. No matter how good their games are, they can't expect people to buy it at full price -- a year later, when there will be even more interesting games out there, from a developer who isn't a dickhead.

Anyway, there won't be any shortage of farming games in the near future. Their rubbish game is nothing more than a drop in the bucket.

Oh, I almost forgot to post the coup de grâce. Presented without comment.

This whole mess was completely insane. I cannot believe the nerve of this hipster douche to get on a high horse and lecture people about getting a real job when in reality he is just leeching off his wife's hard work and vision. He's supposed to be in a support role doing PR and marketing and he just squanders fucking everything. What a worthless asshat.

It seems the thing with that Malaysian patreon supporter could be a bit out of context, but even without that there's enough material to unpack.
Hoo boy.

Like after I went to bed after reading that blog post yesterday I did not expect that that was just going to be the tip of the iceberg and they would keep digging their hole.

Why

I also don't appreciate being called an entitled toxic baby gamer for not wanting to support epic and lumped together with the actual shitheads in the same breath.

Honestly if Epic was even remotely a decent company they would've called the deal off by now. Games they paid for and available exclusively on their platform represent them as a company so if they're OK with being represented by this guy... I guess The Last Night will be next.

Well their new target audience is tim, since he has already bought all the copies.
lol

That's really the case, isn't it? Once you go EGS exclusive your target audience is Tim and nobody else.
I also love this new narrative.

EGS = reasonable, normal people.
Steam = angry, stupid gamer.

Epic is an intellectual club now.
I can't stop laughing.

"Don't worry, kids, we don't need your filthy Patreon donations anymore!"
This is one of the most revolting aspects about this whole EGS thing. I've always scoffed at the notion that I'm somehow supposed to "support" particular developers even if I wasn't that interested in their game because... reasons. It's just pure business at the end of the day for me. Sometimes though I'd feel that tiny bit better about buying and enjoying some games here and there where the developers would show respect and goodwill towards their audience (Think Hollow Knight with the ridiculous value you get for such an excellent, meaty game... at launch! Not to mention the boatload of free updates they've released for the game over years after its release), The more I see of these trashy opinions labeling me as a man child just because I refuse to take Sweeney's bullshit lying down the more convinced I get that many of those people whom I think of as "the good guys" are only one paycheck away from treating you worse than the dirt that's stuck on the soles of their shoes.

There's been plenty of garbage hot takes from both developers and shills for EGS, but these two are a special kind of asshole, particularly this "perplamps" human lump of shit.

I hemmed and hawed over Enter the Gundugeon. I skipped, then almost bought it for $7.50. When I could have had it for free.

I'll let Epic use its money up on my behalf. Thanks Tim! (officially the new "Thanks Obama" of the PC gaming world.)
Kinsly do note equate Obama to Tim Sweeny considering Tim's trumpian posts

Im baffled by some indie devs attitude towards their customers. Why do they make games? For people to play and enjoy?

NO, MONEY.
