I have none. I made an account to siphon the free games and then couldn't be bothered.
I even ended up buying Subnautica Below Zero on Steam instead.
I hemmed and hawed over Enter the Gundugeon. I skipped, then almost bought it for $7.50. When I could have had it for free.

I'll let Epic use its money up on my behalf. Thanks Tim! (officially the new "Thanks Obama" of the PC gaming world.)

"You’ll have to Install EGS if you wanna buy Ooblets on PC. I know that’s asking a lot but I believe in you and your ability to download a free thing and create a user account "

"Epic paying for PC exclusives has become the latest thing Gamers™ have gotten angry about "

"Just imagine if other companies got it in their head to offer funding in exchange for exclusives. What’d be next? Game consoles paying for games to be exclusive on their consoles? Netflix paying for exclusive shows? Newspapers paying for exclusive articles? It’d be some sort of late capitalist dystopia "

There's a lot more hot takes inside.

Lol at that blogpost.

Fucking say "we took the money" and end it at that. Its cool. Believe me, we get it. There are devs that said "we took the money" and I didn't give it a second thought.

Talking down in a super snarky way just turns people off big time. Seriously.

Fuck these devs. They couldn't have more contempt for their audience if they tried. I never say this as I don't tend to get hard feelings towards people wanting to make an honest living, but I truly hope this game fails hard.

Looks like Ooblets signed with Epic.

Edit: I'm slow.

I'm not part of the "boycott them for life" team, but that condescending blog has guaranteed I won't be buying it even after they release on Steam.

Well, never playing that game now. What a fucking pathetic blog post. Can't wait until the Epic money dries up and then all these devs who shit on their potential customers have to deal with the ramifications of their actions. Especially the ones who were relying on crowdfunding initially.

Also remember they had a patreon:

Not only did they have a Patreon, they dropped their publisher (Double Fine) just two months ago. No word on if that’s because of the Microsoft acquisition, but they were taking both publisher money and Patreon money and they still needed an EGS deal?

That blog post is so fucking awful. Even if we ignore that your arguments have been debunked a billion times over and how ridiculous the “why care about x when climate change exists” argument is (you know you’ve fucked up when you’re making the same points Jontron used to justify white supremacy,) they’re acting like they’re still entitled to my sale after changing basic featuresets of the game and I’m the one who’s a baby if I decide to just... not buy it in response. Fuck off. Your “let’s all be fwiends uwu” tone doesn’t make your statement any less aggressive.

The" we got Epic's money so gtfo" posts are really pissing me off. That blog is an insult to pc gamers raising their voice against Epics anti-consumer tactics. Will never buy anything from these devs.

At least they're saying they did it for the money rather than go all high and mighty like Rebel Galaxy devs.

Also it's wrong to say "this way the game can't fail". If the money's just from Epic and the game isn't sold to actual gamers on top then that's still a failure.

It won't make them pack up and go home but they'll still need to figure out what they did wrong.

Also if Epic only gives up front sales money that's a worse deal, they'd likely get that money on Steam too, just later. That just shows they have no faith in their product and submit to an exclusivity for no real benefit. Ie, if the game sells well, the deal is worse for them, than if it sells bad, in which case the deal is good but the result is still not great. Either way not great business there unless they really had trouble keeping the lights on prior to the game's release.

So I also did the thing. De-wishlisted, ignored, and never will buy a game from them :)

Perhaps they made sure they can keep the lights on for a while longer but it's almost guaranteed they won't survive their next game launch, unless Timmy is still around and still willing to bribe devs. The pc community doesn't tend to forget things like this.

I just added them to my ignore list. Now to get on with some good games tonight like the DLC for We Happy Few! ... but i really want to dick about with Time-Lapse capture of me dancing on the bowsprit of the ship by the fishing guild in Limsa-Lominsa in FFXIV.

Decisions, decisions.

Is there a competition between developers that take EGS deals on how much they can shit on their customers? We just had one lying just days before the announcement, and now another that is just making fun of all the concerns people have. Ouch.

Well, with that post put me in the camp that you never buy anything from them. Even if the "impossible" happens and I somehow one day end up buying stuff on EGS, I'm not touching anything from this developer.

At this point we can probably start a study titled "sudden influx of cash kills brain cells".

Yeah, it's kind of strange.
Imagine Coca cola telling their costumers to shut up and stop complaining about high sugar levels because world peace is more important.
While half of twitter and the media tells you that you have to think about the sugar industry. It's also coca colas right to put as much sugar into their products as they want to.

But in the gaming industry it is okay for a company providing a product for a certain hobby to tell its clients to shut up about the hobby.

I was very interested in Ooblets but I think I'll be donating the price of their game to charity. Because, you know, more important stuff. Thanks devs for helping me see things under a different light.

Yes, I'm being petty. But hey, in this case it helps people in need.

I don't mind them taking the money and being upfront about it. That blogpost though, yikes.

After seeing a recurring patterns with EGS exclusivity announcements, I actually wonder if the contracts that Epic offers states that you should actively praise the company and dismiss concerns that people could have about them.

I know that most contracts regarding funding, or remuneration more globally, usually stipulates that you shouldn't talk about the products in a bad way or anything regarded as negative, but it usually doesn't asks you to go out of your way to fight concerns point by point and talk shit about people not sharing your view and/or the contractor's one.

Ha, New Coke. What a colossal fuck up. I mean, if I wanted something that tastes like a Pepsi, I'd just buy a Pepsi. I remember after the backlash and switching back to the "original formula", they still tried to sell New Coke as Coke 2.

Passive aggression pisses me off more than just regular old traditional aggression.
Slavoj Zizek has a great rant where he talks about how modern tyranny is worse than classic tyranny because at least the old kind of authoritarianism was a direct order you could object to, but now the new strategy is to make you look like an asshole for objecting. Like a boss who acts like he’s your friend so he can express disappointment when you call in sick, or a relative telling you you don’t have to go to a family meetup but then getting mad when you say you won’t.

It probably also applies here.

Jesus fucking christ, what a trash-fire of a blog-post.

This should have been their entire blog post:
So we had a big decision to make, and we didn’t take it lightly.

Because Epic doesn’t yet have the same market share as their competitors, they offered us a minimum guarantee on sales that would match what we’d be wanting to earn if we were just selling Ooblets across all the stores. That takes a huge burden of uncertainty off of us because now we know that no matter what, the game won’t fail and we won’t be forced to move back in with our parents (but we do love and appreciate you, parents!).

Now we can just focus on making the game without worrying about keeping the lights on. The upfront money they’re providing means we’ll be able to afford more help and resources to start ramping up production and doing some cooler things.
and I would go: All right, I'm still not going to use the egs, but I can understand this. Maybe I'll pick it up when it comes out on a platform of my choice.

But they just didn't know when to shut up and kept digging and diggin. :sweaty-blob:
As such the games gets off my wishlist and on my ignore list for probably ever unless there's a super cheap bundle or something.
They did get one other thing right though:

So let’s remember that this is all low-stakes video game stuff we’re dealing with here. Nothing to get worked up about.
They're totally right! In the grand scheme of things, this is a totally inconsequential little thing, so I'll just treat it as that and ignore it, forget about it and buy something else instead ¯\(ツ)

Although there's one other thing I don't really understand.
They say that epic pays them all the money they expect to get from selling the game on PC upfront and use that to pour some more development ressources and time into the game before release.
So.... what money will they actually use for financing their things after release?
They're not getting money from epic until the game sells enough on the egs to pay off the upfront money. If this is what they expect the game to sell on PC across all stores, that simply means that they will not make a single cent for the entire exclusivity period on PC.
So they're banking on the consoles alone? They're probably not using all the epic money, but still this feels like a weird long-term business decision, but what do I know.

Like yikes way to alienate your fanbase. I guess wanting to buy a game in my native currency is too much entitlement for them to handle and apparently my original plans to buy the game day 1 were just a big lie. Thank you devs!

What is it with some of these devs and their delusions of grandeur? Like, who the fuck even are you to assume you can talk down like this to your potential customers? Not that there should be any point in a dev's career where it would be acceptable for them to treat their audience with such disdain. It seems like some of them just can't wait to show their - shitty - true colors the second they get paid

I hope these 'entitled' gamers show them their middle finger when Epic doesn't pay for their next game.

It's incredible how Epic's moneyhats turn devs into respectless jerks.
