This runs just as well on Ultra Nightmare settings as it does on Ultra.

One thing though, if I get any sort of STEAM overlay pop up I lose about 30fps while its on screen.

Yeah, the same goes for the steam fps counter.

I just finished the third mission (I think? the cultist one). I'm playing on nightmare and it is indeed, sometimes. a nightmare...

I like it, but I think I prefer Doom 2016.

I have to say: I had no idea it was possible to make doom even more heavy metal. But they somehow managed it.

The game really starts at the 3rd level and its fucking insanity all the time lol
Looking forward to jumping back into it today in that case.

It at least ran like a dream last night. My hardware is exactly what they specified for 1440/60/High and I was getting 1440/100-120/Ultra last night lol

I like the game but I'm not sure about the relationship between finishers, chainsaw, health, fuel and ammo. Chainsaw seems way overused as ammo is scarce.

As for Doom 64, is there no way to play these with proper high framerate instead of the interpolation or bust choice, was Doom 64 EX like this too, I can't recall.

I'm not sure if you're unclear about how they work or if you're questioning the way all of this was implemented...

Anyway...

  • Finishers drop health
  • Setting enemies ablaze makes them drop shield
  • Fuel gives you the ability to use the chainsaw
  • The chainsaw is used to replenish your ammo.

Edit: fixed awful phrasing.

Game performs great on my system (8700k/2070/32gb). 1080p with ultra nightmare settings.
Disappointed that the ultra settings don't bring much of anything visually. Once again Id are being extremely conservative.

Not that it looks bad by any means but no doubt many things could be improved. Hoping for some ray tracing this fall in line with the PS5/Scarlett versions.

The next level is where it starts getting sweaty for real

I love how you can come up with different ways of cleaning trash mobs to get ressources, took me forever to just use my normal nade + flamethrower while keeping the ice one for heavies

Upgraded blood punch is so so good

Runs smooth on High on my i5-6500, GTX 1070, 16GB RAM. But please, can i have a pure DOOM game/spinoff? All this upgrade shit and bling kills the fun for me. I prefer DOOM 2016 even if i did not liked it very much.

Man the bethesda.net crap is annoying, sometimes it takes like 10 seconds to connect... in a SP game...

Especially when the game loads in like 2 seconds on a ssd. 💩
It even disconnects while playing too, warning me that I'm not going to receive "important" XP.

Damn this game is just so much fun it's crazy how good this one turned out. The new movement options are such a big step up of from 2016 it's taking the fast pacing to another level.

Together with the amazing soundtrack I often find myself in a sort of a battle trance and everything just flows. Amazing!

Man the key of the whole thing is to basically swap of weapon whenever you shoot once with the heavy hitting one

Just found how to completely destroy marauders, like interrupt with SSG, double frag + rocket + ballista, swap back to ssg for the interrupt and do it again (without the nades)

Actually, its kinda funny but the game is EASIER than 2016 lol

yeah i'm not sure what +com_skipSignInManager 1 do, i thought it doesn't work because i already signed in before using it

the ammos are kind of scarce in this game, i'm not sure if i like that, because i'm basically playing it like a strategy game or something with all the management mid battle else i would waste all my ammos :p but it's fun in its own way

Honestly ammo isn't that much of an issue, you're meant to swap your weapons a lot. chainsaw recharges by itself all the time, just dont use the primary fire of the basic shotgun and you're good. Actually there's a mastery giving back shells when you use full auto but yeah. Don't understimate the frag grenade too, that and blood punch combo'd are super effective and you save ammo in the process

oh I didn't know the chainsaw recharges the first bar, that'd help!

Mission 6 was the best part of the game and so is its Slayer gate.

For its final section, just do Super shotgun, quick switch balista and repeat.

2 marauders appear in slayer gate 5, good luck~

I'm enjoying the game but it's one of the most exhausting games I've ever played. The combination of extremely long levels that are almost non stop fast paced action and an over abundance of mostly unnecessary progression systems and secondary objectives/challenges makes it so I can only do 1 level per sitting. I'm seriously drained at that point. It's like overloading your brain with junk information after you've processed 2 hours of lightspeed action.

My exact experience, I really enjoy the game, truly! It is just the levels feel really long in part to the amount of non-stop fighting. I have been playing a bit of a level or so, then taking a break.

My only other complaint is the fights in narrower spaces, it really kills the momentum of dashes, hooks, and the like. Some parts of levels feel bad to fight in since with no way to retreat, you can only hope you can dash in-between or something to build distance. It is a relatively small issue in the grand scheme, but it contributes to my feeling exhausted after a few narrow spaced fights interspersed between arena style fights

Just finished level 3, I spent way too much time looking for the last items, I think I missed a 1up somewhere that I don't know how to fast travel back to, my god figuring out where to fast travel to get back to the missed items can be confusing because some gates are closed.

I don't mind the length, thankfully there are enough exploration outside of the non stop combat so I just play one section at a time, there are 10 encounters each level along with the slayer gate so I'm not sure if I could do them all in one sitting :p

Game is a blast though, they expand so much from Doom 2016.

I like the game alright, but there really is some poor & "development time challenged" choices going on.

The constant cutaways to doors opening or monsters appearing etc, taking you out of the action, is completely a 'we chose not to develop these areas such that they could open up while the player had control' decision. They COULD have designed them better, but this was the way they chose to launch the game earlier...

The combat really is a bit of a mess. The mechanics where you get more health upon finishing move when YOU are lower in health and the huge amount of damage enemies throw out (at least on UV) means the game is all about chaining from melee to melee finisher. Low ammo limits means you don't always have the ideal ammo for whatever enemy you're facing, diminishing some of the tactics. Then there's the fact that it really turns into a clusterfuck. Whereas the first game had no hitscan attacks (or if it was 'hitscan' the enemy had a big tell & delay before launching), the projectiles now come from all directions at faster speeds than ever, limiting the skill that can be employed to dodge.

So, the gameplay weighs heavier into luck and has a lot of mitigations to make the game playable at all. Which is a real shame compared to the actual tactical gameplay of many other FPS.

The levels are less refined too, I notice the bounding boxes for many areas are just OK, feeling sloppy and sometimes not great. Picking up items also feels kinda mushy. Play something like Ion Maiden or a classic FPS and you'll feel the difference right away.

The enemies are also more bullet spongey than before, again not making them feel fantastic to fight.

On the bright side it's still a pretty solid game with some genuine tactical gameplay.

Yeah, the level design is really a step down from 2016 and I start to begin to see some of the problems too:
I'm starting to fall into constrains because there is only one legitimate way to play the game. The absolute must to destroy enemy equipment, use your own specific weapons for specific encounters and high enemy health pools makes playing the game more methodical work than fast blazing action.

It's still fun, but I started catching myself bein annoyed when some enemies enter the encounters instead of being in a constant, action rush like in doom 2016.

There's nothing bullet spongey in the game outside of the Tyrant, people just don't know swap their weapons fast enough / use frags to melt heavies down

I see that a lot on twitch where players just shoot one rocket after the other and stuff takes forever, that's not how you're supposed to play Doom at all.

Ammo isn't an issue if you use your tools well, you just don't have it flowing yet

all the progression systems are the same as doom 2016 just in different menus etc Derrick01

Weapon upgrade points from encounters during levels / broken in color sectors
Praetor tokens for armor perks.
Weapon mods from weapon drones in secrets etc
Runes, are from terminals this time.
Sentinel crystals replace Argent Energy for HP/Armor/Ammo upgrades.

It is largely the same but I think they expanded on some of it, like the suit upgrade screen is a lot more involved than last time and the weapon mod screen feels messier. I guess some of this could be down to UI not being as good at conveying the information which is leading to some confusion on my end. I just feel like in this regard 2016 hit the perfect balance between too much info and too many systems and too little of it all. Eternal feels like they jumped to the too much side of it.

Oh the enemies are definitely bullet sponges on UV... When a mancubus takes two precision shots, then another 4-6+ super shotgun blasts at point blank range and a melee finisher?! That's a bullet sponge. The revenant is also in that zone, but probably takes 1 less hit...

Also, it's confusing to refer to this game as Doom, say DE or Doom Eternal or Doom E or something, because shooting it till it dies is how you're supposed to play Doom.

But it's extremely frustrating to always get the precision shots yet still have a bullet sponge enemy. Would have felt better if larger enemies took 1-2 hits before melee after pulling off the precision shots.

Just finished mission 4 and man I feel like a beast sometimes.

Only thing I'm not sure about is the plasma rifle stun mod, I move around so much I rarely get to use it. it has a slow charge up too, only used it in one of the slayer gates for the big demons towards the end because why not

Ive got to like the 2nd or 3rd fight where Archviles turn up and if you dont kill them straight away, it's just fucking bullshit.
Too much shit going on at once, and I'm only on Hurt Me Plenty.
None of my guns feel strong enough except the BFG, and theyre all upgraded, as is the suit

Marauders, Platforming, Glorykills (boring business). This is the order of the things that annoy me. :(
A Doom classic mode would be nice with toned down dependency from glory kills.

I just finished the game in Nightmare and nothing is bullet spongey at all outside of the Tyrant, sorry. You can utterly melt down packs of 4 - 5 heavies at once in one freeze. Frag / rocket / frag /crossbow / blood punch and you're good

Meanwhile, I like it more and more. The last hour or so was just super intense. When you come to terms with glory kills, chainsaw and the flame launchers, then its much more of a breeze. And it really plays wonderfully, buttery smooth.
Also, playing it on easiest difficulty really helps!

Yeah what you just described - using 3 cooldown powers and 2 separate attacks - sounds like a bullet sponge to me. I mean it's more hits than the average enemy in Halo 3 took, and that game was heavily criticized for bullet sponge enemies.

Maybe if you're comparing it to a MMO mob, sure. But for FPS this isn't the norm.

Maaaaybe you just didn't play doom before ? and I mean before 2016, like the first two games ? You're meant to swap your weapon very quickly and melt stuff down, or just crossbow shot / bloodpunch / bfg / ohk with the sword if you need to

Like I really don't understand your point of view sorry, heavies just die here, I'll make a video of a master level run

Yeah I don't get it... you're meant to dodge attacks, prioritize targets and deal damage, very little is enough for the average minion which is used as a resource more than a threat and the bigger baddies take longer requiring you to dodge more of their powerful attacks and deal more damage on them in turn, what's the metric for bullet sponge? That they don't die in one headshot as if playing some realistic game with humanoid enemies? Why not play at a lower difficulty if you hate it? How would challenge come if they died way faster with like one or two super shotgun blasts to the face? Just have way more of them and make it play like L4D? Not saying the game is stellar or anything, I really don't enjoy the combat loop now that I've played more, but not because they're bullet sponges. Playing Doom 64 and even hell knights and cacodemons early on take several super shotgun blasts to go down at a lower difficulty mode ("bring it on" I think).

The game ends up giving you various tools to push your offensive such as ice grenades and blood punch.
Burning enemies during combat also helps since it allows you yo regain some armor so even if they hit hard the armor will mitigate some of that damage.

I can't wait for people to reach the very last level and lose their mind. There's one "arena" in particular there that is so beyond absurd and I loved everything about it. The game just straight up stop caring about you hahaha
