Any time someone brings out the argument that it's because of the margins that these things happen they immediately get side eye from me.

They know this happens because of the bag of money paid out. Zhuge especially knows with his business acumen. This kind of language is why people assume Epic is paying everyone off to parrot this nonsense. It's incredibly disingenuous. If the media or analysts or whoever don't want these accusations around then stop fostering it by saying disingenuous things.
Zhuge 100% knows that the one month delay is because of Tim paid for that. But it wouldn't fit the narrative right?
Zhuge is so transparent:

PC players already said this for months especially after Ubisoft's Division 2 deal.

Rockstar launching one month later on Steam shows you where they really want you to buy the game.
On Steam? Because they can make it full Rockstar Launcher exclusive.

That's part of what's transparent.

purposefully leaves out information about Steam's cut for big titles

regular Steam users correct him

"Oh since Steam FANS are getting upset..."

Maybe don't post purposefully misleading information then?

Always ask yourself this:
Why do people care that customers ignore or boycott a specific company or service when their only, or major argument is, that you SHOULDN'T CARE and others DON'T CARE about using the service or buying from the company.

If others don't care, why do you care, Mr. company defender?

I mean, another day another EGS exclusive. I'm more interested in what they paid for it than any sort of anger over it
Lol, I wouldn't be shocked if it was in the millions.

Even more pathetic, it isn't EGS only, as we've got a wealth of choices, both at launch and if anyone buying the M rated games just so happens to possess an adult level of patience and gratification delaying skills.

let's hope it was enough so that other titles Tim had his eyes on get overlooked now.
Well this news definitely deflated whatever remained of the air in BL3 sails, and id have to think the EGS warchest probably just took a huge hit with whatever RDR2 cost. Maybe we'll actually will see some indie titles again because their paydays will be smaller.

I love how there are a handful of people talking about Salty Steam fanboys, but all I see are people saying one month ain't no big deal, and they can wait it out easy.
Attempt to manufacture controversy/rage. Shame it isn't just about steam tho, as RDR2 PC buyers have plenty of options. Who knew that anyone bought games from another storefront except steam? Anyone saying "steam fanboy" sure as fuck didn't.

I have no reason to be salty. If anything I'm enjoying seeing Epic's leverage get punier and punier.

From 1year to 6 months to 1 month, what's next? DLC exclusivity? Costumes in Fortnite for people that buy the game on EGS?

Well, nothing for No DRM fans like myself lol.

But I am not worried.
I do not know if my ageing 4790 CPU with my GTX 960 can play it adequately.
Then, I rarely buy games on launch because I wait for a good sale.
That will probably come at a time where there will be some enhancing mods available since I read many complaints about the game's controls.
Which means that I ll probably experience it in its ideal state.

Very petty on Sweeney to buy his month but that's an asshole dealing with his 2k executives brethren of assholes, lol on them.

I am not feeling bad about the FOMO croud which will buy this D1, so many things happened and so many things discussed so by now they should have known better. Yet they let themselves being manipulated by pricks.

Oh well, maybe some of them will learn the hard way.

I just wonder if Sweeny realizes he's being used by these big publishers. And if he is aware of it, it's obvious he doesn't care as long as he's sticking it to Valve. Which makes me wonder what Gabe did to the man to have him embark on this vendetta. It all seems so bizarre to me.

According to some, legend has it that Tim's heart was broken after the cancellation of Half Life 2 Episode 3 and thus, a villain was born. He needs to force Valve into such dire financial straits that Half Life 3 will need to be made.

oh, he definitely knows ... and yes, he does that (ubi and RDR2 specifically) purely to take those games off steam

nothing ... it's just about greed ... he just wants money ... and he knows that if he keeps doing this stuff steam will stop being the only place to get all the big games (which wasn't really true, we all know that ... but that's how he sees it) ... and when that happens - big publishers will be coming to egs without having to be given big bags of money

and that's actually kinda/sorta already happening ... stuff like that Techland-published game (Arise), or that Curve Digital one ... i don't really think epic went after those ... i'm fairly certain in both cases it was the publisher that approached epic asking for money

They will go back to multi-store releases if Epic stops paying. There's no way they're going to engender bad publicity without any renumeration.

But I think we may be seeing a shift where developers are going to start begging Epic for money, rather than Epic having to fish through the Steam wish list charts.

All that highlights is how monumentally fucked the games market is. People say we're heading for a crash. Frankly, I think we're in one.

Also, the RDR one month delay is a nothingburger. Anyone who wants to wait will wait. Sweeney has just spaffed a fat wad up the wall for literally fuck all.

I was either expecting RDR2 to launch on RGL, EGS, and Steam at the same time or be a 3 month "co-exclusive."

One month is pretty much nothing and it'll be releasing between the Thanksgiving sale and the Winter sale. It'll easily be the number one seller on Steam for December and more than likely sell at least a million.

I still won't bother buying it till it's on sale for $15 in a few years.

Made a video about RDR2 PC announcement:

I've tried a different approach this time, in the beginning, I casually discussed the PC announcement and then suddenly started to talk about how EGS version is not worth buying in any case (because it's really not, Rockstar Launcher version has the best bonuses and other stuff). So it's not purely anti-EGS video, I just analyzed the info we have and explained what is the best place to get this game. But yeah, that 1-month Steam delay deal is really bizarre.

People with FOMO already play on console, people who want to get it day 1 on PC will get it on Rockstar Launcher because of all those pre order benefits, and people who want to get it on Steam will just wait for a month.

- Launching on Epic doesn't cannibalise that as margins are nearly as high. Also Epic has Fortnite money to incentivise pubs to launch on Epic Store.
Zhuge is right here but for the wrong reasons, imho.
It's not a matter of margins, or even incentives, but just pure and simple users.

Rockstar does not plan to sell much on EGS during that first month, especially considering the preorder rewards limited to RGL.
On the other hand, I'm pretty sure that with a day1 release on Steam, many people would have ignored those rewards (mostly decades old games basically all Steam libraries own at this point) favoring their preferred platform.

In other words, I see this more like Rockstar not giving a shit about Epic at all other than earning some spare change, and just considering EGS at the same level of a random third party store for their keys like GMG.

RDR2 and Borderlands 3 prove that Epic's unlimited money is in fact limited for EGS. They obviously have set some sort of budget for it, else there wouldn't be any reason not to buy the full year for both.
I disagree. It's just speculation on both our parts but I think it proves a much more damaging thing : that publishers are afraid of disastrous launches sales and other consequences resulting of EGS exclusivity. It's like they are dipping their toes are lightly as they can in the pool while taking the largest bag they can. This attitude inherently acknowledges the toxicity of EGS's brand.

Hey I like your version a lot better than mine so hopefully you're right! It would be wonderful if customers managed to send such a strong message so soon.

The shift has definitely happened. Multiple people are saying the deals are worse from Epic now and some of the more recent additions/poaches would struggle fo make the top 5000 on wishlists. Publishers, like Versus Evil, clearly approached Epic with a lowball offer for their DOA games that they themselves hadn't bothered to market just hoping to recoup costs. Good for Epic, they probably only have to offer up 2 to 5k sales up front, and they get to crow about more games leaving steam.

Apart from a few AAA games, the quality of Epic releases has dropped and the freebies are recycled multiple times before they hit epic.

Epic may be majority owned by one guy but there is still a large minority owner that has seen a 52% drop in year on year revenue on the number one product and the black hole of cash that is the EGS will need to prove its worth very soon.

I really think Epic might've made some positive waves if they'd struck deals with publishers for Fortnite skins on games sold on EGS, followed by them actually making and releasing games that aren't Fortnite again, even if they're just paying another developer to do it. That'd be legitimate competition to Steam and in such a case, I might've actually bought some stuff on EGS just as I buy games on GOG, despite Steam being the center of gravity in my library.

It's definitely not the sign of a healthy market. Developers are just trying to bypass consumers now which is all sorts of fucked up and totally not the sign of a vibrant and healthy market.

That in itself should be a concern for Valve/Steam. And I don't think these games going EGS exclusive is making people want to buy more games - if anything it is going to further depress sales of games in the long run if people think their platform of choice is turning into a shithole.

That's exactly it. The video game industry is so weird. Journalists, analysts and other professionals mixing truth with misinformation. I suppose it will get worse as this whole EGS and exclusivity bullshit continues. I hope one day all of this goes away and EGS just fizzles out of existence.

We are on the brink of "Fashion Designer" development. Meaning: pubs and devs design their game around the desire to shop it as an exclusive and not with the customer in mind, they don't need the customer.

Epic Exclusives: designed to appeal to the money, like a Fashion Star-Designer who makes stupid dresses that no normal person would wear.

This is just so incredibly pathetic and petty of Timmy and destroys any notion that he wants to create "competition" in the market place (like there was any notion of that in the first place). This guy clearly does not give a shit about the platform, the marketplace, the customers or even the publishers and developers. He is on a mission to destroy steam and set up his shit show as a monopoly (where you will see the 12% cut rapidly increase).

I think of all the shit Epic has done this has to be one of their lowest points. Many PC gamers should be happy and be hyped and looking forward to a game that they have been waiting years for to hit the PC (many have been waiting for an RDR on the PC since RDR 1). They finally get it and in comes Timmy because he thinks he has found another way to damage steam. Now fair enough it is just another month wait but it sort of soils the whole feeling behind the announcement.

The current Mixer report shows that you can't buy an audience.
Code:
https://medium.com/@ethan.may/896fc713d752
The hours-streamed on Mixer doubled quarter to quarter, probably Streamers hoping to bank in on the publicity from the Ninja deal.
But the hours-watched fell 10%. Meaning that not many watch those streams.

Just look at this infographic and the disparity between mixer and twitch on the watched to streamed ratio. Mixer has just a third of the hours-streamed from Twitch. Not bad, right?
They only have <5% of the hours watched of Twitch.

Holy shit that’s the best analogy I’ve seen of this so far.

How utterly ridiculous of a situation we find ourselves in that developers are designing games to appeal to the handpicked curators of a capricious billionaire.

You know, theoretically, from an artistic standpoint, this wouldn't be so bad and could lead to more acknowledgment for games as art. IF Timmy would create a foundation or something with a billion-dollar budget to further the goal of creating games as art or expanding the scope and technology of development. This would have great synergies with his own engine.
There are some great artists, designers, programmers who try to expand or reimagine what games could do or could be. Invest in those projects and you have instant recognition and (real) admiration.

I don't think we're deep enough down the EGS rabbit hole for this to be a thing yet. We've heard, anecdotally of possibly 3-4 games on the platform selling well, with no actual numbers to back it up (actual sales data). Everyone else has been silent, and several of the developers can't not have seen the pushback, both legitimate and trolling; from the community just for taking the cash. Low "sales" and angry community will sink a dev fast after Epic stop calling.

In the year since EGS has been live, all the games taken have been in development for at least a year, if not more. There is no way EGS would have influenced the design of any game already in production, only something starting production within the last year. Most of the games have been poached because they got hype from fans elsewhere, if a game newly starting production can't build an audience before hand, Epic can't find them. Also, how would one, at this point figure out 'what game' is the Epic game type? None of the games that have sold well have been the same genre or all that mechanically similar.

If a "boutique" game's only audience is Epic or any imitators that follow in their wake, they won't survive long without those same saviours swooping in again and again. Those ridiculous pieces of clothing can survive by pricing at an equally ridiculous price. There is a FOMO and scarcity for physical items like that. I don't think something like Untitled Goose Game 3: Goosehard with a Vengeance would sell any copies if it's priced at $95 USD to recoup costs because Epic didn't drop cash on the dev again. It's a digital piece of software, there is no scarcity or status to be gained from owning it. In this hypothetical, I'm assuming theyd make UGG2 with Epic's cash, just an FYI

Basically what I'm saying is, if Epic don't buy Ice Pick Lodge or exclusive their next game, this idea falls apart, as they're the most games as art/out there games/weird design you're going to get at a budget level that Epic would notice.
