Imagine Microsoft would have launched Rise of the Tomb Raider but people would have needed to login with a PSN account to play it. That would have been embarrassing.

And still, here we are with Tim having no self-respect for himself or his brand. Sneaking up everything he can, as soon and fast as he can.
This isn't late state four dimensional capitalism, as some people believe. This is just idiocy.
it's both :p he only can do it (and so recklessly) because he has all the money in the world

And still, many people don't care and bought Tetris Effect on EGS. And the EGS defense force is on it as well, telling us how Valve needs competition, how Steam was bad as well in 2004 and how Epic's store will benefit us as consumers with lower prices. Incredible.

Next time an EGS exclusive is being released, I'm going offline for at least 24 hours. 😒

Don't let the 🥚🥚 and the idiots championing for it affect you.
Ignore those people and have fun.
I have major doubts that those who buy from there and the defense force are anything more than a drop in the bucket.
Even if not, as long as people will only buy something from them if they have no other choice and go back to Steam/GOG/etc for everything else, there is no way the 🥚🥚 will be profitable. So ¯\(ツ)

Lean back, pour yourself a glass of whiskey and play some of the gajillions of games that are unaffected by all of this (like Digimon Cyber Sleuth in October! cough) and watch anime, while watching from a distance how Timmy continues to make a fool of himself and his store either implodes or does a major turnaround in terms of consumer-facing services.

I refuse to buy a Tetris Effect on EGS. The fact that the game is not even releasing on the Oculus Store is such bullshit.

Say what you want about Facebook and walled gardens, but the Oculus Store is really good both as a store and as a client.

Releasing a game praised for it's VR support not on Steam or Oculus Store is really just a whole bunch of fucking stupid.
I am also impressed by Oculus Store, and I hate having extra storefronts. But it's legit.

Why Tetris Effect would go to EGS is indeed a quagmire.

I'll stick with the PSVR version for another 12 months though i usually play on my monitor so there's no real need for me to buy it on PC until it's out of EA.

If for some mad reason you dont own Alan Wake, this will be the only instance I can sanction the buffoonery of accepting free shit from the EGS.

... and as everyone already guessed:

It has been officially announced that Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries will now be releasing on December 10th 2019 exclusively on the Epic Games Store.
Community Pre-order pilots will be able to access the Closed Beta to access practice missions in November, prior to the game’s full launch.

Our partnership with Epic Games store allows us the opportunity to make sure MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries meets our internal goal of creating the best MechWarrior game possible.

Fans looking to obtain refunds from their pre-order of any tier are able to do so by September 1st. Pre-order refunds of any tier will be refunded in full. Additionally, those seeking refunds will be able to keep all bonus MechWarrior Online content from the Standard, Collector and Ultimate Editions of the pre-order, which amount to $100, $180, and $300 dollars worth of in-game currency and content for MechWarrior Online including all bonus items like XP, premium time, badges, decals, cockpit items and more, depending on which pre-order tier purchased.

However, refunded pre-orders will forfeit their access to the full game and be unable to participate in the upcoming closed beta for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, now scheduled for November as well as lose the exclusive MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries DLC items.
For more details on MW5 or refunds, check out the FAQ.

Didn't they claim FAQ update wasn't anything to do with potential change of service. Bunch of liars.
they did ... and yes, they are

the CEO even did an AMA on reddit a few days ago ... and chose to lie by omission when asked about workshop support (he said the game will have workshop support ... which of course it will - once it launches on steam 12 months later)

I wish I had seen this post before backing a game on KS yesterday. Now I fear that game, despite mentioning steam all over the place in the campaign will end up EGS. Yeesh. I expect this will be in the XboxPC game store day and date given MS' connection with it

The only games I back anymore are Visual Novels, since I'm pretty sure Timmy considers them all to be trashy porn, even though some of the greatest stories I have ever experienced have come from the genre.

i think at this point it's safe to assume that every single UE4 game is in danger (unless it's complete trash)

i mean - they don't even have to do any legwork for those games ... they're already using their engine, so they have their contact details and shit ... all it takes is for them to go to each dev and offer them a lot of money, they don't even have to search for them

so yeah ... at the very least - avoid all kickstarters that use UE4

Checks, doesn't see UE4
I'll breathe a little easier.
Will definitely be more vigilant now.

Wait till someone tells Tim that there's small but dedicated fanbase which is ready to drop a few hundred dollars to import games from Japan.

If Timmy wants to start funding localization of some of these VNs (the main thing that prevents a lot of these great stories from making it West), then I might change my opinion of the man. But from his track record, he'll just wait for fans to fully fund the localization, then sweep in and take all of the credit for it.

I actually went and checked the two kickstarters i have for games and both have said there's no exclusivity plans and neither use UE4 so i'm hopeful. I've waited two years for them so far so if they did go EGS then i'd just get a refund and wait another year anyway. I'd be sobbing for the whole 365 days but i'd manage. Somehow.

Epic making a power play.
There's also always the option of just deleting your account :)

Some games have cloud saves now, welcome to 2008 or something.
Not gonna lie, I'm a bit disappointed. I was looking forward to them not delivering again :(

Nah, if they're giving it away for free, I'll take 'em. Epic hasn't gotten any money from me yet, and I'm sure these giveaways aren't free for them.

Your data they get from scraping your Steam friends list is worth something to them, and having their client already on your PC is worth something to them. That’s the entire point of the free games. There’s no such thing as a free lunch, especially in an age where data alone is worth billions.

I just had a "oh shit" thought.

So I was reading another forum about the Mech Warrior news..... there happens to be a journalist going in hard regarding how great this is for the future of the dev and the game. Some dressed up words about "money is good and any news is good news".

We may have a problem with "too many games/not enough dev resources/dev money available". I've seen this angle from game journalists before and I think its because they talk to smaller devs, (and larger/middle sized devs) and they're struggling. I believe it.

Kickstarter and kickstarting games most likely never provide enough funding and Epic just laid that cold truth down on us the last couple of years.

Meh, I have almost zero steam friends (people I know IRL or anyone I play with). I have a facebook account bc I'm the leader of a local library club. That fucking ship sailed a long looooonnnnggg time ago lol. I don't even have the client installed atm, just some free games floating as part of my library on my Epic account. (Which I created to sample fornite on the PS4 like a year ago and no thanks fortnite lol)

This was bound to happen, though. There are too many developers and too many games for the market to sustain them. But instead of viewing it is as a supply and demand issue, they're just blaming it on the consumers for not giving them enough money, and Valve for not doing all of their advertising for them.

to be fair - i don't think it's even about that ...

i think the only reason for those free games is epic then being able to say "see? we have this many active users monthly, they're all potential customers who might buy your game ... so why don't you release your game on our store instead of steam? we'll give you much better visibility and let ALL those people know about your game" etc. etc. etc.

It was always true and it’s been apparent for some time. Even basic math shows that getting $5 million for a moderately-sized thirty-person studio isn’t enough to cover the two to three years game development takes, especially once you factor in utilities, property taxes, and other things required to keep an office building running. And $5 million is like, the top .01% of Kickstarter gains. Humans are notoriously terrible at understanding numbers that are very large or very small (which is also why more of them aren’t as mad at the very concept of billionaires) so when Broken Age needs extra time and funding to get made the reaction is “but you guys had $2.4 million!!!!” as opposed to “yeah, I guess you guys do work in San Francisco.” It’s why the big Kickstarters lately have all been backed by another publisher like Deep Silver or THQ. Bloodstained said right up front “the money is just to show interest to a publisher we already have.”

Game journalism is ignorant at best and malicious at worst. The only person performing a single speck of journalism is Jason Schreirer.

The rest are either hype or outrage clickbait machines.

And almost everyone works on console centric sites. So its no surprise to see stupid takes.

Gamesupply is great because gaming has never been better but its left us with large backlogs and a ton of starving artist devs and dev/consumer relationships that have never been shittier.

Their store website is awful, can't even see like more than a tiny sliver of the cover art for each game lol.... Plus now I feel a bit guilty, Epic is using me to give false hope :( Sorry, I'll only spend on like steam and PSN sales, maybe, like less than $10...

relax, i'm not trying to guilt-trip you :p

just explaining what's the most likely reason for those free games (especially since they already bragged about that exact thing at GDC)

i'm sure JaseC has more info about that saved somewhere :p
