News Epic Games Store

This is grotesque.

So is Epic, giving people the option to pay for digital trinkets in instalments.

Apple announced a bunch of sweeping changes to the App Store in the EU yesterday in an attempt to comply with the DMA. Frankly it is so convoluted that I've read over it several times and don't completely understand it. But I think the gist is Apple is lowering their take rate for the highest grossing apps to 20% and raising the bottom tier to 12%. Tim has spent the past ~24 hours being mad about it so kudos to Apple for upsetting him.

BRUSSELS, July 22 (Reuters) - Apple's (AAPL.O) changes to its App Store rules and fees will likely secure the green light from EU antitrust regulators, people with direct knowledge of the matter said, a move that would stave off potentially hefty daily fines for the iPhone maker.

The company last month said developers will pay a 20% processing fee for purchases made via the App Store, though the fees could go as low as 13% for Apple's small-business program.

Developers who send customers outside the App Store for payment will pay a minimum fee of 5% and at most 15%. Developers will also be able to use as many links as they wish to send users to outside forms of payment.

The European Commission is expected to approve the changes in the coming weeks, although the timing could still change, the people said.

"All options remain on the table. We are still assessing Apple's proposed changes," the EU watchdog said.

Looks like the EU might actually accept that nightmare of bureaucracy. Would likely put an end to that chapter of the Apple/Epic saga in the EU.

Yo dawg etc etc etc.
Fuck epic, etc. etc., but Tim/Epic always had a point with Google.

Apple runs a closed platform and Epic mostly lost based on that.

Google masquerades Android as an open platform, then acts like a mob boss when anyone else tries to compete with Google Play.

It was so brazen that Epic basically had a slam dunk case if they could prove the accusations.

And at the end of the day, Google is a far more terrible company than Epic so whatever. Fuck 'em both.

I agree Google are a bunch of scumbags, but the fact they have to allow third party stores on Google Play and they have to allow those third party stores to access everything on Google Play is pretty fuckin' wack.

Not against the verdict, way against the remedies.

This is a classic case of “Fuck around and find out”.

If Google hadn’t fucked around, they wouldn’t find themselves in this situation.

The remedies are designed to redress an anti-competitive imbalance going back 15 years. I think they are harsh and fucking wild, but overall the least Google deserves.

I’m not even of the opinion that all LLM/genAI technology is shit.

There is value there. However, like with anything that has a high compute cost, the value is on the edge and not centralised.

But Silicon Valley is wanking itself off trying to loss lead themselves into being the next big ecosystem and it’s not going to end well.

The new Fortnite season came out this week and it had the lowest opening numbers since Epic started publicly displaying player counts. This weekend peaked at ~1.852 million. For comparison the previous seasons opening weekends were:

Chapter 4, Season 3: 2.1 million
Chapter 4, Season 4: 2.8 million
Chapter 4, Season OG: 6.1 million

Chapter 5, Season 1: 7.1 million
Chapter 5, Season 2: 5.1 million
Chapter 5, Season 3: 2.4 million
Chapter 5, Season 4: 3.2 million
Chapter 5, Season 5: 4.5 million

Chapter 6, Season 1: 4.7 million
Chapter 6, Season 2: 3.2 million
Chapter 6, Star Wars: 2.3 million
Chapter 6, Season 3: 2.2 million

I think the overall decline can be contributed to the fact the Battle Royale numbers continue to drop and the metaverse hasn't picked up the slack.

:geek: player numbers are the lowest during summer as people are traveling and the weather is nice. You can view the same phenomenon on Steam.

Also I doubt the average zoomer cares abut Power Rangers, or at least the version that was airing on TV while they were swimming in their daddy's junk.

Are there even any major collabs that haven't been in Fortnite yet? It feels like they've emptied the well of all the big names they can get their hands on. It's not like you'll ever see Pokemon or Nintendo characters in the game. I've read the next season is rumored to be The Simpsons which isn't very relevant nowadays.
