I ending up buying Elden Ring at the very end of last year end have basically just been playing that, lol.
It is indeed very good! Though I really could do with a little less obtuse quests, but it is what it is. And it really is insanely big :sweaty-blob:
I very much wonder what (wrong) lessons the industry is gonna take from it, but I suppose we'll only find out in 5+ years or so.

I would say the quests in Elden Ring already are a lot less obtuse because most NPC's very clearly tell you what they want and there to get it, which made it very easy to finish most of their quests on a first playthrough, unlike other souls games.

Also, most NPCs quest (maybe all?) don't have any failstates tied to gameprogress.

I spent a lot of time thinking about what wrong lessons they could take, and really struggled to think of any major ones. The minimalist music, like BoTW would be one for me. I played most of Elden Ring playing classic Zelda & Castlevania OSTs in the background. (Though the Elden Ring crypt song is amazing the first few times, and there's a boss theme or two that is decent)

More likely we'll just see games that don't take enough lessons or fail to emulate the lessons well.

Eden Ring is kinda by-the-books in its faults, so probably nothing new to learn from other AAA. Though I'd take less invasive tutorials and things like that, but the immense play area that mostly dilutes the usual Souls formula (and stabs the level design in the face) or the insane repetition of "dungeons" and ennemies, that's nothing really new for AAA.
Sure as hell removes a lot of the Souls identity when dragons are just everywhere (and almost the same fight as they were 10+ years ago) and not a one off though...

Lately I discover that I don't play games at home anymore. Probably due to how good the deck is, I only play games during commuting. In return, time can be put into other hobbies like building plastic model kits or learning. Not sure if this is good because my progress in games is really slow, but I definitely feel that my leisure time are better allocated and I can accomplish more than just plaing videogames.

Back at my old job I used to just play games during my lunch break so 45-mins to an hour at a time and I was surprised at how many games I got through. I think I was more consistent with that though because I was like this is what im going to do with my time for that

Yes consistent is key. Though I mainly play RPGs so games now take forever to complete. For example, I needed two months to complete the main story of Harvestella haha (around 60-70 hours).

Are the stadia controllers good? I am bidding on three controllers now. Hoping to win the auction so I have a set of controllers that I can play with my kids

They are good. D-Pad and face buttons are a little clickier than some like, but I think it’s a great controller. It feels like a hybrid between an Xbox One and DualShock 4 controller. No touchpad, but you get the PS4 shape and symmetrical sticks and PlayStation-style bumpers and triggers, but you have the Xbox One button layout.

I’ve got one I bought on a gamble a couple of months ago hoping it would get a bluetooth update, and it works wired on my iPad and MacBook (plus Steam Deck and PC) for when I’m streaming away from my gaming PC.

Since the announcement of the Bluetooth update I’ve bought 2 more on eBay and I’m gonna use my 3 pads as secondary controllers or when I simply fancy a change from my 8BitDo Ultimate.

Looks like it went really well for IO Interactive

Key highlights:
  • Hitman 3 overperformed against expectations in its first year
  • Hitman 3 continues to sell well in its second year so far, thanks to the releases on Steam and Game Pass
  • Revenue was higher than expected thanks to a content deal with Microsoft for Game Pass, which included a minimum guarantee and a performance bonus

Showing again why devs took the egg cut
Seems pretty clear cut to me. A big fat cheque from Epic in Year 1 plus console sales, and then most of the missed Steam sales in Year 2 onwards.

Devs would still be doing it if Epic were plumping up the cash.

NieR Automata Anime is good now, actually
Even the 1st episode which people complained about could be considered a "masterpiece" when compared to most other anime adaptations of games, since they're usually between terrible to mediocre...
Took a quick peek at the Trails of Cold Steel anime just out of curiosity, it looks really bad... It apparently takes place between Cold Steel 2 and 3, but since I've only played the Sky trilogy so far, I only looked at a few small bits of that anime, but that was enough to see that it doesn't look good at all.

ANYONE EXCITED FOR FOR FORSPOKEN?

YEA?

ANYONE?

NO ONE?

HOW MANY?
As long as its not poorly reviewed I'll play it eventually. No way at 70$ that is a crazy price. And P3P coming later this week I will be busy for a long while.

Yeah, I dropped the Cold Steel anime halfway through the first episode. It's terrible.

Yeah I'll eventually play Forspoken but from the gameplay videos it doesn't look that great for a $70 game (and trash regional pricing), I know people give it shit for the dialogues and story or whatever but those are the things I'm more interested in, and the protagonist looks cool.

This is exactly the reason why I don't buy former EGS exclusives when they come to Steam. Moneyhatting and store exclusivity are going straight against the open nature of PC gaming. I won't support any efforts that are helping Epic to achieve this. There are shitloads of other great games to play on PC.

Eh, I know we’ve disagreed on this before, but I don’t think not buying the game is really sending the right message. If anything it further justifies the developer taking Epic’s cash. I think this is especially true for developers not backed by a publisher, like IOI.

The best (and now proven) way to deal with EGS games is to let Epic eat shit on the game selling poorly on their store to the point where they’re actively discouraged from continuing the practice, then judge the former exclusives on their merits as a game once it’s out on a platform you’re willing to use.

In the end the only thing that matters to these companies is the bottom line. If they see things that make number go up, they will do them. If people don’t buy the game on Steam after a year they’re not going to link that to their EGS deal, they’re just going to chalk it up to a poor selling game and think they were right to take Epic’s cash.

But that’s just my opinion.
