I want to get this background for the sake of it (because I can!), but then it will be forever tied to my Steam account, and the idea makes me uncomfortable.

After playing through it at launch last year I'd honestly be hard pressed to say if it is even worth buying and playing at all. The dialogue is shit, the combat system gets stale pretty quick and some of the platforming is frustrating at some point. Character progression is also tied to story beats which makes the battles in the game redundant. It’s really a bummer because the game looks really good and the South East Asian reprensation in the cast but also mythology was refreshing to see.
Im currently thinking about simply either playing it through game pass or just wait for an even deeper discount. I would have bought it already if the reception to the game wasn't so damn mixed.

I used 2x Multistrike upgrades and one of the Slay: Gain armor upgrades.
I generally think that the Slay: Gain attack upgrade is the strongest, since you don't have to rely on Rage with it. I wasn't offered it that run though, so I had to make do. Thankfully I was up against Seraph the Temperament, not the Chaste.
Turncoating to EGS wont be nice to your budget in the future.
Just to be serious (ish) for a second. Everyone is different. Get what you can where you can and be happy.
Personally i have zero interest in EGS and have claimed none of the freebies or logged into my own account. I have an Epic account for work purposes but it's literally so i can test the client etc. I'm not about to go full batshit at people using EGS especially when most on Meta probably don't even register on the EGS usage stats much at all. lol.
It's video games, it's supposed to be fun not stressful.
Of course, when i take over the world me and a few like minded people will be popping round your houses for a "chat" but until then have fun!

well like 95% of their freebies is usually highly praised stuff thats been bundurued to hell and back ,as well as part of other special deals (gamepass,psn,apple, twitch promos, ...) left and right

Im looking into Streets of Rage 4, but apparently it's 2-4 hours long. Is there anything to do after playing the "campaign"? If not I might just play it via game pass and get it on Steam when it's cheaper. Im not that into beat'em up games, but it looks like a nice game.

On the one hand, good on Epic for giving them away for free I guess, but on the other hand they are devaluing these games pretty much everywhere since Epic's offerings aren't even tied to a subscription.

I was out of the 'buying bundles' game for about a good three years before I really jumped on the EGS freebies. So for as many people already own these games, as many don't and appreciate the free stuff. And hey, the coupon stuff is great too. My bottom line for buying games to play solo is price (co op is function, then price).

It's likely cos I'm getting older and also budget conscious, and it's only been more recent for me, but my feeling on it is I'm not going to "cut my nose to spite my face" on the "idea" of either my choice of platform or on the concept of ownership, when I can be playing the same games sooner and cheaper.
I've bought so many games that I'm certain I will only ever play the once and never again, given how many new games come out all the time, plus the backlogs!
So yeah I've been using Game Pass and EGS much more lately
2 great examples for me even recently:
Ori and the Will of the Wisps, a very good game. Will I replay it? I have no idea, but probably not. I paid £25 on Steam to do so but it could have been £1 on Game Pass. I'll likely Game Pass new releases when I can now, think Tell Me Why will be the first.
Also, The Sinking City, also an enjoyable game, and there's no sign of a Steam release yet, but I just went ahead and played it.

There is a loyalty program. And "loyalty points" are another currency and source of uncertainty for the Steam Market meta-game.
For instance, this awesome profile background can be yours if you toss "loyalty" points to Gabe. Before that, it was costly to get a waifu background.

Previously, these backgrounds were hard to get. Now, you can buy the game and have them instantly.
Wok you are a genious but I'm not sure if you overlooked why are people buying your expensive backgrounds/cards. Well, its certainly because as you pointed on the second message you need to "own" the corresponding game related to that specific background/badge(card) you are selling.
So, people probably wont or cant spend money (Whatever their reason may be) on a game they wont play and so they take the market route.
I think that may be a reason to why Valve attach the new point system to game ownership.
This is just a hypothesis, not sure if I left some details behind.

I think there might be yet still games to get a discount. For instance at the start of the sale Depth wasnt discounted and I received today a steam email "reminder" of it being on sale at 70%.

That's a good price for it. The artwork and music alone are worth the price, let alone the cultural stuff you're not going to find in any other video game.
Lack of character progression outside the main folks you find in chapter 1 is a critique I agree with, but you get like 20 characters to find what you like with combat. Not sure how it can become stale because you gotta play everyone just to see what you like.
I thought the platforming was fine, but I enjoy challenging platforming.
I loved the VA.
The game's dialogue actually made me laugh

Speaking of which Valve does have an economist don't they? I'm guessing that all of this was run through them before had and that they only way that this system would work without tanking this. Is that points can't be "cheap" and also that certain items still need to have a certain value threshold. Also having to own the game is a must since that would restrict people from just buying background left and right for "next to nothing". This may actually end up working for them in the long run if they also plan to let publishers/devs also make animated background as well. While static backgrounds may only be 500 coins, animated ones will almost always be 2k coins..... Having an animated background will require more work than a static image that most pubs/devs already do, but the pay out would be that they would be rarer drops and that they would sell for more in the shop. This would also make encourage more people to buy the game and sell background for some already cheap games.
So a lot of thought must go into this. When TC were introduced, Valve gave out free copies of some of their games with trading cards and were able to make more money off those cards then what they did form giving the games away for free.

That all depends because you could make RL money but that because a very complicated process. Or at least for a time I think you could just use your Steam Wallet fund and buy keys for CSGO and TF2?

MHW is a great game, but a bit complicated to get through the story mode with 4 players. You can, for example, only join missions after the specific intro cutscenes has been triggered etc, which can take some time. I also do not think progress is being shared, so you'd need to repeat everything four times.
But after that, it's awesome coop hunting.
I simply found not every character viable to play since it is a system that deals more damage the higher you combo. And so I always had a party constellation in which one character has an attack that gets the counter higher, Ajna does something, the healer does something and then a heavy gets the last few hits for damage. While I tried different parties throughout I always wound up going back to the one that worked the best.
So every combat encounter was the same button presses for me and the enemy design did not make a change of tactic necessary.
My problem with the platforming was not in the design because I thought that had a nice flow to it even if some passages were too long. Rather that sometimes when I had to do some directional inputs to get for example the axe out during a jump sequence it wouldn't do it.
I could see the character interactions being entertaining but for me dialogue was cringeworthy. No saving from great VA performances possible.
And yeah, the cast is almost if not entirely BIPOC. I think only Razmi is white but I could be misremembering. Which was, like I said, refreshing to see in videogames or even media in general.
