Also, in gaming related news, this article had pretty great information about SW:Squadrons
  • There is an artificial corner speed
  • Bonuses triggered by maxing out one of the systems (Shields, Engines, Weapons) that last over time
  • Flight aesthetic based loosely on Poe's manoeuvring in TLJ
  • Drifting/Engines cutoff is something that only happens in a short time after cutting the boost gauge (I think?)
  • There is an aiming reticle that was hidden in the trailer, but there is no predictive targeting other than a green light when you are on the right spot
  • You can't turn well while boosting
  • You get an extra layer of shielding independent of your distribution when maxed out
  • You get a much faster laser recharge rate when maxed out
  • Few weapons are gimballed, lots of fixed weaponry.
That's about the gist of what I could gather from it. From what I can tell, they seem to have a few excellent and new ideas (maxing systems gives a bonus which introduces lasting and continuous resource management) which is no doubt going to do the genre some good. I still need to see proper flying to decide and I'm definitively not a fan of that crazy amount of space dust which kind of ruins the sense of space and momentum for me but this can be something special.

I find that lately the thread has been veering somewhat off topic. I enjoy idle chit chat or jokes but I would honestly prefer that topics like console games or issues like the one about Chris Avellone were discussed in separate topics. I use the thread as a valuable resource for Steam news and opinions about Steam games and sometimes I have to go through many unrelated posts in order to find on-topic ones. Just my opinion though, if others enjoy having other discussions in this thread then I'm cool with it.
I agree with you.
Seems crazy to me that we're having a huge event and there isn't anyone talking about the games/demos being shown. I'd love to hear about some recommendations and hidden gems people have found in the pile.

I'll start with some that positively surprised me and I had no idea existed before this event:

That is surprising, when it was first announced it looked so bad! But good to hear that is turning out good. I love games where you are minuscule in a real world.
I mean, Im very into building/management games like The Forest, Factorio, Satisfactory, Subnautica and so on, so Grounded I expected to like, but I was still skeptical.

I'll give those a shot kio, but Spiritfarer really grabbed me, as did Occupy Mars. Haven looked promising but the camera control kb&m is a nightmare :(

I’m enjoying Outer Wilds but the core mechanic is really going counter to my slow play sensibilities 😫
Hmh it was the only sure game I would pick up during summer sale but I dont like too stressful games and like taking things at my own pace. I knew about the time thing but might still be too stressful for me!

Is the Spiritfarer demo new or the same they had in a previous event?
(though the old one already convinced me to get the game so it doesn't really matter :p)

Tried the Grounded Demo and honestly saw potential for something neat there. At first I was skeptical because I thought it launched for full in a month but then learned it is Early Access and they can make this something good with that. Positively surprised

I faced the huge spider 5 minutes into the Grounded demo and got rekt, then I quit the game and never looked back. 🤣

Maybe I should give it another chance.

I wouldn’t characterize it as stressful necessarily. More like “oh I ran out of time so now I need to make the tedious 2-minute run back here... again.” Having that looming over you every “run” kind of disincentivizes open-ended exploration.

Okay, I'm not getting that something out of Outer Wilds that others are so enamored with. I don't think it's anywhere close to being as meticulously designed as FEZ or The Witness, as I read in some places. At a very basic level, those games don't punish you really harshly for messing something up or simply taking too long to get somewhere. I consider myself fairly open-minded when it comes to games, but enforcing this kind of "do it over and better this time" mechanic really rubs me the wrong way in a game like this. It's like doing The Challenge in The Witness over and over. Having to play it with a controller because the KBM controls are mind boggling in and of themselves is also not helping. Will still try to finish it, but I don't think I'll be able to fully get over the game's underlying design philosophy.

Edit: while I'm at it, there's something to be said for information or exposition density. The amount of proper nouns that this game machine guns into your brain is astounding. I recognize that this is a very subjective thing, but pelleting the player with nonsense words and names out of the gate and keeping up a rapid pace throughout, while expecting you to make sense of it is uniquely off-putting to me. I suspect they partly recognized the issue, because they do keep track of key information for you, but it's only accessible in the space ship. Would be nice if they just abstracted it to a menu you can access anywhere, instead.

I like a lot of things about the game, to be sure, but it's simultaneously also really hitting a bunch of the wrong buttons for me. :grimacing-face:

INDUSTRIA looks rad:sweaty-blob:
Got some serious, Dark vibes from that. Germany, 80s setting (at least in the intro), strange (research) plant, and general mystery feeling.
Of course, maybe it's just the imminent season 3 of Dark that made me think about that. Really liked the demo,

Wait isn't Grounded a Fortnite like?
No, while you do build bases in both games. I think that Fortnite has a "horde mode" so you have to protect your base against waves of enemies. And I think that could happen in Grounded that is not the main objective.

Also there seems to be another game that is sort of like Grounded called Drake Hollow.

Those spiders sure are something, I was taken aback when I saw them for the first time since you did get a real sense of danger from them compared to what else you see in the beginning and then I just ran like hell.

Okay I played some more TF2 and I think I now understand what I don't like about it. I don't like the cool down system. That is the issue. So even when you die you can't use your stuff right away. Traditionally in FPS games you have a finite amount of supplies to use in the game and you would pick up ammo by walking over your enemies body. In TF2 you have an unlimited amount of supply (I guess that makes sense as to why the lock on rocket launcher is one of the last things that you get because it gets an unlimited supply, there for making it very OP. In the OF game the laser cannon that you get at the beginning is what you would get at the very end because it had an unlimited supply and just needed to charge before you could fire it.

It seems that there is not much of a point to rodeo a Titan anymore. Before you would rodeo them, expose their weakness and then fire using your gun, but now all you do is drop a grenade. I'm not sure if that does note damage but it's not nearly as fun.

The infinite ammo makes sense as to why it's a hassle to get your second weapon. You have to hold the weapon changing button in order to switch. Traditionally it would be its own thing along with your anti-titan weapon. But because you don't have to worry about running out of ammo there is not much of a need to bringing it up right away.

One of the Titan things that I don't like is how before you would get multiple anti-piolt smoke. I think that was an option or maybe all Titans got it. It would recharge after a while but you could use it right away and you would keep having it. But in TF2 it seems like it has to charge up first and then you only get it for one time unless you use a skill slot to have 2 per Titan...... Why???

I like the smoke because you can use it as a smoke screen to escape from others, it would damage those that get near it and you could use it multiple times.

......RIP TF1 I will really miss you. I think I'm going to try to do a thread about what do people think makes TF2 better than TF1 if we don't count the single player part (because they do share some game mechanics but there are also difference. And which does what better.

Its just annoying.

Ha, sounds like i need to sign in to Steam today. It didn't really register that there was an event event going on as i've been finishing some non-Steam games the last few weeks. It's kinda refreshing tbh. Think i'll login and have a poke about before going to have a shufty through some of the games in that itch megabundle.

Titanfall had an average of 1-2 players pre-Steam according to the game subreddit. There are right now 10k playing the game.
1-2? Do you mean about 1k-2k?

Also the number will likely go up when EA Access releases in the fall. Since the core gameplay Is pretty good and I don't think APEX has a death match mode yet. I do wish that they had that in the game.

Im really enjoying the Titanfall 2 campaign. Played it a while ago. Its the only game i have on Origin and so I havent really re-visited it as i just dont fire up Origin. Picked it up on Steam and just finished ...

The mission in that facility where you hop back and forward through time

Its a really good shooty bang game. Glad for those that like the MP that it has a bit of a player number boost.
