Downunder.
Not much point worrying about what Epic might do next, really. We just need to keep playing our games, tackle the backlog and whatnots. There's still plenty of good games next month which will come out on Steam or GOG. Epic can announce a hundred free games tomorrow and I simply couldn't care less.

I too was looking forward to The Outer Worlds and was rather saddened by what EGS has done, but there will be other games worth supporting and probably someday soon, this whole EGS thing will be nothing but a bad dream.

Guess it's time to fill up my wishlist with April releases.

While hoping Generation Zero (in 2 days) turns out good.

Interview is only partially about the headline and more about Unity, game engines, business and the glorious streaming future, worth a read.

Some of you were worried about Control (Remedy Game) because the were pretty much silent on their social media but worry no more, there's already confirmation of the known 12-month deal.

Alright, couldn't help myself but post again on ERA. The irony of Sweeney rambling about "junky asset flips or shock controversy games that are built just to make noise" while not too long ago being shook by Twitter kicking out Alex Jones is just too delicious to not point out.

I grew up in the 80s with a C64 and a Amiga as my first computers.... you can bet your ass I pirated EVERYTHING... and those sweet sweet crack-tros...

memoriiiieeees
I was that one weird kid who owned a bunch of originals on C64 and Amiga. Kept some and sold, amog others, the 3 Turricans (boxes, maps, all still there) for close to 100€ per piece last year. That's what I call a longterm investment, suck it dirty pirates!1 Too bad my Amiga broke a decade ago, today I would probably research a way to repair (especially in the US there's now a small industry dedicated to ressurecting and overhauling old computers). Using emulators just isn't quite the same.

Tizoc you have Katana Zero listed twice. ;)
Thanks for the awesome list, as usual.
My poor wallet.

---

In other news, 2 new characters are coming next week to Fighting Ex Layer, a really fun fighting game that no one is playing.

The game is really easy to play for anyone, since you can pull flashy special moves or combos by doing simple button pressings like forward + punch, or forward + kick, instead of the 57 button pressings it usually takes in other games. :p
For those not aware, this game is a successor to the Street Fighter EX series, done by a small team at Arika, the developer behind those games.

Of the two characters, one is free (Sharon), the other is paid (guest character Terry Bogard).

Here's a couple of trailers for the new characters:

EDIT: The developer released a few videos of the upcoming 1.2.0 update (Steam version), with some gameplay, for those who may want to see how the game plays:

I’m with Tizoc; I can’t even play what I have, what’s available, and what’s coming soon to Steam. The only thing that would upset me is Master Chief Collection, Konami Collections, or Devolver going to EGS.

that last one might still happen

we STILL don't know what's going on with Observation .... store page is gone, steam logo is gone from their website as well ... but Devolver logo is still there

I don't think they are. If Devolver have no interest in doing exclusive releases on PC for a published title, they'll be discussing it with its creators. They can't say anything official until they're ready.

we'll see what happens ... but they definitely wouldn't nuke their entire steam presence (including the community hub) for that game for no reason

While so far most of those deals were apparently made behind the dev's backs this could be a situation where the devs took the moneyhat and then told their publisher. I assume Devolver, while not going exclusive themselves, wouldn't stand in their way.

yeah ... i can see that happening

Devolver really seem to be one of the best publishers (other than maybe New Blood Interactive), so i can only imagine they don't really tie any of their devs with needlessly strict contracts

You guys are giving Devolver too much credit. If the game becomes exclusive (and all signs are pointing to it) it's 100% on them.

After they signed their publishing agreement, they are the ones that handle publishing platforms and whatnot.
I mean, for other games that turned out EGS time exclusives, we kept saying "oh poor developers, this is all on the publisher, the developers had no say in this, nor were they informed", and now because it's a publisher that has a bit an irreverent image, are we seriously going for "poor publisher, this is all on the developer, they were the ones that choose how/where the game would be published"? That's not how publishing works. All this is on the publisher.

Devolver is as willing to take the money as any other company.
I know you guys like their image and quirky stunts, but it's still Mike Wilson's company, a guy who is willing to do anything for a quick buck. Yeah, the guy who made the "John Romero's about to make you his bitch" campaign for Daikatana, that pretty much killed Romero's career. He's the guy behind former publisher Gamecock, who kept releasing poor, if not downright broken games, and pulling crap like that stunt at the 2007 Spike Video Game Awards, where they interrupted Ken Levine's acceptance speech on stage (and other poor stunts at E3).

I know with Devolver, people started eating his shtick, because they managed to publish some worthwhile games, but again, they are in it to make money, and they are as willing to take Epic's money as anyone else.

It's not like those agreements cannot be broken, backed out of, or altered, and it depends on how iron clad they are in the first place. If Epic is throwing millions of dollars around per game, there are definitely devs who would pay whatever the breach of contract is and still feel like they're coming out ahead, especially if they think exclusivity isn't a negative thing.

I'm not saying Devolver would never take EGS / exclusivity off the table at all, but it's incorrect to say devs can't get there on their own even with prior agreements.

Fans of 2D action games, or games with rogue-like elements, should keep an eye on Black Future '88.

The game is a lot of fun.
It's designed for fast, short runs (characters have a limited time to live; the one I'm using has 18 minutes, I believe), and each run will unlock new equipment, power-ups, and more, that will drop in future runs. Maps are randomly generated, so each run you're getting different stages. Interestingly, drops (health, ammo) that you don't pick up quickly will, after a time, instead power-up your enemy, so there's an incentive to pick up things as quickly as possible.
On top of that, it has a cyber-punkish setting, and a hard hitting synth-based soundtrack.

Here's a couple of previews:

If anyone is interested, the game can be pre-ordered, at a discount (around 8€), from the official website, and it gets you a Steam key with immediate access to the beta.
The beta already features achievements, and progress will not be reset when the final version launches, so if you like the genre it's not a bad time to jump-in.
