Valve have always made it clear that they want to move away from the dependency on Windows due to microsoft's inevitable dropping of x86/win32.
It's why they keep investing in Proton and why i think they will circle back to SteamBox again and again. If they can divorce your steam library from Windows then they have a big chunk of future-proofing in hand.

People laugh at Valve's mis-steps in hardware but i'm sure there's an end goal even if it is a bit fuzzy at times. They'll keep trying new stuff every few years and one day they'll have most of the pieces they need. It's why i don't want them going public, they just wouldn't be allowed by shareholders and investors to experiment like this.
Look at Nintendo's fumble with the Virtual Boy, then the DS series became the industry's de-facto portable platform.

The Wii was "controversial" in terms of "traditional gaming" but everyone owned one. Then there's the misstep with the Wii U, and now, "is it going to be ported to Switch?" is a meme.

So yeah, good companies (not Sega) turn an L into a W

Oh, wow. Yeah! I hadn't thought of that but whoooo, that would be AMAZING!
Fans have already linked internet radio stations to your truck's virtual locale so to be able to do that with map based photo enhancement would be astounding.

edit ( It will also hugely increase the storage size of the game and/or greatly increase the network traffic and bandwidth but it'd be cool to see it as an option in years to come. ) Tech availability permitting of course.

A friend sent me this link which might be of interest to a bunch of people here. Do we have a thread where this would be a better fit?

Intel ISL at Eurographics 2021 - Photorealism Enhancement with GTAV as an example.

It's technical but there's some good examples and visual comparisons in this video. More at link.

I wonder how this could work with a game explicitly made to take advantage of it. I can imagine a good amount of game-detail could potentially be dropped and be handled by the neural network.

Thanks. Wow, this is great!
It really is, that's basically why I keep saying Valve wants steam to be a kind of bridge that connects as many platforms as possible, only requirement is to have your game on Steam alongside places if you want but steam is mandatory which isn't a bad deal if you ask me.

Service connected with other service via API, isn't it cool?

Finally got my hands on this thingy here:

Pre-ordered decades ago, it got out of stock a couple of days before release, and then unavailable, then out of the blue it showed up at my doorstep.

It's my first 8bitdo, and I was very keen to try one, especially for its multi-platform capabilities (I play on PC, Mac, Switch, and Android, all of which are covered by the controller).
Plus it has paddles and gyro, costs like a fraction of any official controller, and got excellent reviews all over the place.

I've only had the chance to try it for a few minutes anywhere but on PC, and it's really cool how seamless it pairs to different devices.
Also it was my first time using a controller on Android, and I didn't expect to be able to use it on the OS as well! Like, I hit the home button and could move around the icons with the left stick. Fancy!

All in all, I was way overdue an upgrade from my old X360 controller with wonky dpad and left stick (not to mention the 3 out of 4 drifting joycons, fuck you too Nintendo), and this seems an excellent choice.
Also the GB color scheme makes me feel all fuzzy on the inside.

Copons My one turned up today also! Pre-ordered AGES ago too! Even though Amazon had the wrong delivery date at first so that came and went, then they said the 12th and then yesterday the 11th they changed it and said it would be delivered June 23rd... it turned up today.

I have the 8bitdo SN30 Pro+ and like it so the SN30 Pro 2 with back-triggers and profile button was an insta-purchase for me.
I got the G-Classic look too, i almost caved and bought a PS themed one but i'm glad i stuck with the G-Classic.

I've just gone looking for some silicon thumbstick grips/covers as i can't remember where i got my current ones.

You in the UK too?
Amazon UK was a bit messy in communicating the mess (presumably caused by shortages on 8bitdo's end?). Like yeah, it was supposed to release on April 30, then got unavailable on April 28 or something, when I received a mail saying they didn't know when or if, then a few days ago another mail saying it was slated to June 30, and yesterday got shipped without any specific notification. 😅

So far the only issue I have is with the 8bitdo apps: it recognizes the controller, but it doesn't let me do anything :/
Like, there's a splash screen prompting me to hit the profile button, but nothing really happens there.
The Mac app doesn't even recognizes it, even if it's connected and games see it just fine.
I guess I'll try profiles and whatnot as soon as I have time to use the PC, but I'm not super concerned, as I'm not into profiles anyway 🙂

Copons Yup, i'm in the UK too and yes, Amazon UK was a bit of a mess but hey, i got the controller so it's all good!

It'll be handy to have the profiles for switching between Switch/PC but i tend to use my controllers wired USB on my PC so it's not really an issue but the flexibility is nice. I'll pull down the "Ultimate Software" later on and have a play about with it. I didn't bother with the SN30 Pro+ but apparently you need it this time for the back-paddles? Haven't tried it yet so can't say.

Jeff Grubb is saying that Remedy is publishing Alan Wake 2 by themselves and there might be something at E3.

If this is the case I'm guessing Alan Wake 2 is the smaller scale game they have in development, unless those are both epic published games?

I've just retried and managed to connect successfully to the "Ultimate Software" (yeah right 😄) app on Android.
I haven't had time to play around it, but yes I think it's needed for the paddles, which are mapped to "null" (or something like that).

Although, you don't strictly need profiles for switching between devices.
There's a little toggle on the back where you can select the input mode:
  • X for Xinput (Windows basically)
  • A for Apple
  • D for DirectInput (Android)
  • S for Switch

Of course if you need different prefs for each device, that's where profiles can be useful I guess.
I'm generally fine with the default config.
I'll definitely need to play around with the paddles though! I've got a Steam Controller, but never got into it enough to appreciate all its features.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is 93GB on Steam. It said 103GB disk space needed and is a 93GB download but what size it will actually be i have no idea.
Is that so surprising? it's 3 pretty big games in terms of content, lots of set pieces and cutscenes (quite a lot of it as video I think).

Another release, liked the demo I played during the demo festival a lot

Felt somewhat like a isometric Ratchet and Clank.

Looks cool, like Ori

Mivey Not really but i haven't ventured into the realms of COD disk space yet so it just amused me to see 100GB+ required.
It's why i decided to get a bigger SSD last month so i was expecting it. As you say, it's 3 fairly big games which have had their assets upscaled etc.

Can't wait to ignore pretty much everything else for a few weeks once it's released.

Mine arrived today and I'm also in the UK. Because I'm a consumerist twat, I'd forgotten that I even ordered one so it was a nice surprise :) I quite like it, though I think I bought it mainly to use with my MiSTer and not on the PC.

For me in Chile getting a Steam Link or a Steam controller was really hard i bought it used from a friend who bought from a dude who bought at least 15 controllers
Yeah, LATAM, SEA, basically everything that isn't US, Canada and bits of Europe you have to rely on third parties. It means increased costs, dubious origins, extra taxes (real taxes, not Tim's kind) IF you even find a trustworthy third party at all.
