I am just surprised to see this amount people that said "Arkane don't miss' before release after Deathloop. That game was fine but far below Arkane other games, and after looking at gameplay of RedFall it was obvious what game that is and that is below even Deathloop regarding how Arkane game is. But i am surprised that they didn't even managed to reach Ubisoft levels of gameplay loop that they aimed for.

I just hope that this is not Harvey Smiths last game at Arkane.

Regarding Redfall
Arkane had a very specific kind of game they excelled in. The Dishonoured games were great. Stealth-focused, hand-crafted levels made with love and attention to detail. Story was not that interesting but characters and worldbuilding were neat. Prey kinda went the same way. I couldnt find my way into Deathloop since it felt like a rogue-like, I dont like rogue-likes and nothing in that game really clicked for me.

I am wondering, if Arkane as a whole went down the route of "this formula works but lets ditch it and try out new things" or if that was a management decision somewhere to chase a trend. We know that Raphael Colantonio left the company a while back, so the creative focus might have shifted within Arkane. But who knows? I mean, they also worked on Wolfenstein YoungBlood, which felt like a coop-focused game-as-a-service (at least when it came out, unsure if they reworked anything since then, but there were so many interlocking game design choices that maybe reworking was impossible). So maybe it is just what they want to do now? I certainly would like to know.

But either way, it remains to be seen if the negative reception the game is getting right now will lead to a turnaround and realignment.
One thing is certain however: this shows us that no developer/studio should ever be given a carte blanche to never fail. Even if they make 10 amazing games in a row, the 11th one could be a total stinker.

Regarding AAA in general:
Yep, we had a bunch of ports that arrived unfinished, no doubt about it; and games are overpriced even further than theyve already been. Some games were just a disappointment in comparison to the hype that marketing had built up.
It has not been great.

I am not the best example to follow, since I still preorder some games; but I would just like to encourage everyone to not buy at release if you can help it, but wait for high-profile releases to be fully patched and discounted. I feel this is what publishers will feel the most (but you already know that) and hopefully, hopefully get back to more sensible budgets, less trend-chasing, less GaaS ... (maybe thats wishful thinking with regards to some publishers, tho)

But I also want to state I dont really like the "all AAA is shit, only indie is great" angle Ive seen come up several times here. Its such a negative and kinda pointless thing to write. I get where youre coming from: youve probably been burnt by AAA games too many times, dont like the studio heads behind the games (just think Ubisoft or Blizzard), or think the games are overmonetized and overpriced to hell and back (not to even speak of regional pricing), and see releases with bad optimization/performance and see your viewpoint enforced.
But any game, of any budget or team size can be good or bad -- and release fully working or in a wonky state (or anything in-between).

Hyperbole never helped anyone, especially those that just want to enjoy their games and are bummed out about a lacking release. Sometimes you look forward to one specific game and if that releases unfinished and someone says "ah look I told you itd be shit, its AAA, how could it not be shit" ... thats just not helpful in any way. And with some games it kinda felt like some people were just waiting for something, anything bad to jump at -- and that leaves a bad taste, to be honest. Its just so unnecessary.

(sorry for all the vague wording, thats on purpose: i dont really want to debate or fight anyone. i just see it again and again and its been annyoing me. If you think this is targeted at you: please dont view it as a personal attack.)

What a sad day for Arkane.

The rotting husk of a semi de-gaasified looter shooter that's obviously designed for co-op, except with no co-op friendly features like shared game progression, pick up matchmaking or even AI partners (or any AI for that matter, looking at video content) where the developers keep insisting that "it's actually totes a SP, Arkane DNA experience", except it's always online lol, and the distinct characters are obviously archetypes meant to complement each other in fights, something that is informed by the environment and encounter design (such as it is) and lack of compelling SP story or experience.

A game that serves no audience, basically.
It is funny how "design by committee'd" this game is and that resulting in a game that, as you said, literally targets nobody. If you aren't interested in letting Arkane make Arkane games, then why even bother continuing the studio?
As I said, I hope someone at Microsoft actually understand the true value of this studio and rescues them from Zenimax.

One more thing regarding Redfall, i would really want to meet person from Arkane that said that Redfall is combination of Far Cry 2 and Stalker. And i would love to see that person show me what the hell is combination of those two in Redfall xD

I remember Bethesda (and maybe Arkane) not being all that happy with Dishonored 2 and Prey sales, not terrible but also not what they were hoping for. To me it looks like they decided to try and evolve their type of game by adding some popular mechanics and ended up with two projects, one was fitting their game into a "rogue-like" structure with mixed results and the other was multiplayer and, going by reviews, didn't really work out.

It's pretty obvious

Far Cry 2 has Guns, Which Redfall also has.
Stalker has Pistols, which Redfall also has.

Maybe someone just asked them about "Is this gonna be like Stalker?" and they answered "Redfall is going to be a Far Cry too from Stalker."

Lets hope Microsoft buy Larian next, I'd love to see their take on a GaaS game!
To be fair RedFall was like 2-3 into development when MS bought them. Their next project will be first one under MS.

Also Jedi Survivor is running bit better with new patch (with RT Off). Traversal stutter is still there occasionally but it is manageable. Also Running game at 3413x1920 so DL scaling is activated with FSR2 at Performance gives good IQ (outside artifacts that FSR causes with fast moving objects) and i still manage to keep game at around 60FPS (it drops sometimes to 55 but GSync deals with that). But man do i enjoy playing this game and does environments in this game kick ass.

Think I might grab the latest Humble Bundle. Got a friend who loved Chaos Gate and Spiritfarer is on that I have been interested in grabbing for a while.
From all I've heard Chaos Gate is super good. Like one of the best modern XCOM-likes on the market.

But man, I just don't vibe with the 40K universe. The whole, "Angry Man goes, Rawr!!!" thing is a complete whiff to my sensibilities.

I actually dig a lot of the design (ships, armor sets, etc.), but the whole agitated superhero/villain schtick is just bleh.

Still tempted though as XCOM clones are a dime a dozen, but the truly exceptional ones are far more rare.

.....................

Spriitfarer is the real deal. Absolutely loved that damn game during lockdown a couple years back.

The Bendy games are also awesome surreal/horror walking sims with a unique setting.

There are still good devs there and that will be obvious when they decide to return to immersive sims.

Those Redfall reviews....

Vampires deserve better than that.

Arkane :(
Don't worry we still have Bloodlines 2....

People who were saying they don't miss conveniently forgot about wolfenstein youngblood (and I'm being kind by not bringing up deathloop), they were heavily involved in that mess even if they weren't technically the lead devs on it.

Also the "X dev can't miss" is annoying because how many times have people said that in the past and got burned?

Bioware can't miss. Until Anthem.
Bethesda can't miss. Until Fallout 76
and Fallout 4
Rocksteady can't miss. But they will when Suicide Squad comes out.

Everyone can't miss until they do, and everyone will miss at some point. I got so annoyed watching people say Arkane can't miss so they'll play Redfall when this was an obvious disaster in the making from the very first showing of it. But no one wants to learn from history or admit what they see with their own two eyes. We always get people who say with co-op games "the devs say it'll be fine solo" and it never turns out that way, but the pattern will repeat because no one learns.

I am a big fan of 40K. At surface layer it is a lot of Angry Man. But if you dig a bit deeper there is a lot of good stuff there. For example the Ciaphas Cain books are a lot of fun based around a Commissar who wants a simple life but can’t find one. Very Blackadder. Or Deff Skwadron. A comic about ork fighter pilots and the hi-jinks they get up to.

They have even started to push the fiction into Horror books a setting that works extremely well. I don’t think GW always do a good job of selling the 40K universe as it is nearly always space marines. But that is their biggest selling faction so not surprising.

Then again one faction I play as is Iron Warriors who go more into “Very Angry Men” territory.

However I don’t want to be one of those people who are all “You Are Wrong And Here Is a Five Million Word Essay on Why My Opinion Is The Only One That Matters”

As an aside I love the Imperial Guard which is why I was even more disappointed when Dark Tide turned out to be a hit technical mess.

I was there Day 1 for Arkane games including Deathloop. But after that and after reveal of Redfall i said nope this is not what i want from Arkane. As soon as i saw that Redfall is shooter i was out. You can't claim how your level design is true Arkane if you switched your core gameplay. As soon as they went with shooter intricate level design was out. i believe that they would manage to bring Arkane levels in open world but they had to make gameplay loop like in their older games. There is simply no reason to design levels in interesting way when you are pushing players into encounters and you even include lootable weapons (but they even f-ed that up too). And going for shooter especially coop one means good enemy AI and Arkane never had that good enemy AI but due to slower pace of their previous games and core gameplay loop they didn't have to make them too advanced. And they somehow managed to make enemy AI even worse than in their previous games. So honestly i don't know what they were doing past 5 years.

And seeing other devs congratulating Arkane and praising their work is kinda sad. And every time when you complain about that you hear "game development is hard, give them break". Look Sherlock tons of jobs are hard but you don't see that level of defending.

I love Arkane's Dishonored 1, 2 and Prey, and I was looking forward to giving a chance to Redfall, but..nope. Every video I watch just looks dreadful in pretty much every respect.
I did download it via gamepass, but immediately I noticed how terribly controller sensitivity is handled and just noped out of there.

I guess every studio has to go through their "Fallout76/Anthem/Avengers" moment, to remind themselves to do what they are good at instead of chasing multiplayer wannabucks.

Next up to learn the painful lesson: Rocksteady.

Microsoft can't catch a break, huh

The amount of Sony-Era user avatars in the Redfall review thread lead me to believe so, lol.

Poor MS.

I actually don't think that at all as they've been straight fire with recent content like Pentiment, Grounded, Psychonauts 2, etc.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Makes me more inclined to look into Chaos Gate.

I don't understand their weird fixation with multiplayer-focused games. All big multiplayer games are multiplatform, people want to play with their friends regardless of platform. Just make a few big kickass singleplayer games for crying out loud. I think Sony's GaaS turn is going to underwhelm for the same reason.

Everyone wants to tbe the next Fortnite.
Cuz if you do manage to be the next Fortnite, the 30 bombs youve made along the way are negligible,
Of course this only pays off if you DO manage to be the next fortnite eventually.
Sunk Cost Fallacy as business strategy basically.
