Tried a few games from LudoNarraCon. I usually consider these events a success when I play one game that makes me want to buy it on release, or find games that I was going to buy but now I wont. I found three I'll be getting first thing, and took one off my wish list too. So quite successful, all told!
So yeah, some great stuff, some okay stuff, and some awful stuff.
I'll start with the awful first.
I hate musicals. I knew this going into this game, but that didn't stop me viscerally hating it as soon as the protagonist started singing.
I'm sure this is not a bad game for people who dig that, but I don't.
Again, I'm saying "awful" but it definitely falls into the "not for me" category. I don't like roguelites/likes and found the gameplay pretty barebones and uninteresting.
Stilted dialogue and bad voice acting killed this one within a few minutes.
These next lot were quite intriguing and I gave them a solid chance and/or reached the end of the demo, but I've decided I probably don't think they're worth my time.
This demo just didn't come together for me. I dig the idea but the execution didn't grab me, the story was not as interesting as I'd hoped and the battle system was confusing.
An interesting concept, great artstyle and I love the use of Malaysian-English dialect, which does give it a nice regional flavour. I just don't think the story grabbed me. I'd be willing to give this another try depending on reviews, and when it's discounted.
Nice graphics, excellent production values, but I'm done with walking sims unless the story concept is really interesting. Sadly, the story concept for this was not that.
This game almost grabbed me, but I found the overly-stuffy language used in the dialogue was offputting. No one spoke how people actually speak... it was jarring and took me out of the experience. But cool concept and I love the gameplay duality of solving a murder mystery through the perspective of a detective and a mind-reading magician.
This last lot of demos were awesome, and I'll definitely be getting these games.
I love a classic point & click. This feels like a 90s-style adventure game adapted beautifully for gamepad controls. It has the almost irreverant humour of the genre, some decent (and absurd) puzzles with a great visual aesthetic. I think this'll be great fun!
Quite a generous 2 episode demo. I was sold on the concept after episode 1. The nice visual style, partially animated, blended with the fun writing grabbed me immediately. Because of this, I'm saving the second episode until release.
This is the highlight for me. The production values on this game are insane. Great voice acting, amazing visual style that's beautifully animated. We're not just getting moving lips and a few poses here - character portraits feel alive, environments are stunning and the the story idea is really well-polished. I think this game is a cut above everything else shown in LudoNarraCon, and I can't wait to play it next month!
