So is Yu-No a good VN ? I think I read something about an infamous scene. Infamous in a good or bad way ? Will I be impressed or traumatized ?
Well, when the original Yu-No was released in 1996, it was billed as an "erotic adventure". Now, whenever there's an erotic content in any game, chances are there will be one or more aspect of it someone will disagree with, or even condemn said content. Having said that though, the erotic content in Yu-No is not the main attraction of this VN. It played a major part in Takuya's character development and progress in some parts of the game is tied into this erotic content. Is Yu-No still a good read without the erotic content? I'd say so. Yu-No examines science, religion, occult, adolescence, and love in equal measure, it has good writing, and it's an ambitious game, especially for its time.
Let's get back to this infamous scene. Without spoiling the game, I'd say it's divisive. Personally, I think the game could do without this scene at all. There is some argument to be made on whether or not this particular sexual encounter is necessary to reinforce the bond between Takuya and this other character, but I had a hard time justifying it. Whether you will be impressed or disgusted by it, well, that depends on your own sensibilities toward H-content. It didn't ruin the game for me, but I can't fault anyone who swears off the game because of it.
Despite all that though, I'd still recommend anyone to check out the original version, even if it's purely for historical curiosity. The timeless art of the PC-98 graphics is still being imitated today, and some of these charms are lost when translated into a more contemporary "anime" look. However, the new version which will be out today will improve most, if not all the archaic aspect of the game, and in all likelihood will retain the spirit of the original, although the jury is still out regarding the new art style.
