Makes you think if this will even run well on consoles.
I would assume the 60fps performance mode will run in 540p upscaled to 1080p on medium, just like the 3070 does according to the reqs.

The requirements seem super steep on paper, but it really depends on how the game looks in action if any outrage is warranted.

E.g. to get 60fps with pathtracing in Cyberpunk, I have to run 1080p with DLSS on balanced.
According to the table above, I should be able to run pathtracing in AW2 at 60fps in 1080p with DLSS on quality.

Of course, Cyberpunk is open world, has more systems going etc, but I am still not surprised to see these reqs.

Honestly, if the game has no shader compilation stutters and looks great, then Remedy already made a better port than almost any other AAA port this year

30 series came out 3 years ago.
It is reasonable to raise the bar given how long ago the 20 series and earlier cards came out, but from the 20 series onward, each generation of Nvidia GPUs has struggled due to the crazy prices and some annoying caveats to certain models. There was a solid year and half when the 30 series was virtually unavailable due to the pandemic, crypto, and scalpers, affecting the pricing of older cards too. That is, unless you were willing to pay 2 to 4 times its MSRP.

Now we are in an awful transition where games have continued to improve graphically, but folks are still catching up from the years of struggling to upgrade. I know I am in this boat. I still have my 1070ti and had all the plans to jump on the 30 series (remember folks use to say the 20 series was not a good upgrade since DLSS1 and early RT was not worth it), cue the madness that was 2020 through 2022, and here we are. I would still love to upgrade, but at this point I think I am probably just going to stick with handheld PCs and hope for the best haha.

oh I didn't mean like that, I'm not gonna play alan wake 2 since i have no interest in the series, I was just saying I'm still on that model and I really don't feel like i need to replace it for gaming yet

I think it'll still be 2-3 years before I "upgrade" and I say that with quotation marks because even then I'll probably just buy a gaming laptop or a prebuilt or just a more powerful steam deck?
I'm not 100% sold on steam deck since I can't really do 100% of the stuff I do with windows on SteamOS so I'm not quite sure it would work as a main gaming device for me

Low settings might still look great and hard to fault Remedy for the current gpu generation launching at the same price/performance level of the last one, but it sure doesn't help either. Looks like if your gpu costs less than 500€/$ you'll be below 60 playing at 1440p, low, dlss/fsr quality. Won't be the most gpu demanding game (cities skylines 2 releases earlier) but still, that is tough.

I'm really into Detroit right now. The story and characters are grabbing me and the acting is pretty good all around. I said this before, but man, the game looks great. This is by far their best game.

Finished Shadowrun Hong Kong. Had a good time with it which isn't surprising because I really enjoyed Dragonfall. The writing in these games is really solid which combined with the great atmosphere really sucks you in.
This game has been in my backlog since forever (or since gog gave it away to be more precise).
Lack of funds and an aging PC do wonders for the backlog.

I've been playing for a while on PS5 but what the hell have Insomiac done with Peter Parker and Miles Morales faces on Spider-Man 2?. They're even worst than squenix Marvel's Avengers random average faces. And it's even weirder when the memories flashback from the previous games they have the original faces.

Lies of P is pretty good. Definitely a budget game that does a decent job hiding its budget. The localization is kinda bleh though.

I mean, that's with pathtracing. If you turn off RT entirely, Cyberpunk actually runs pretty good for what it is.
I completely misread what you meant here, my bad.

Aaaaaaaaand, Cities Skylines 2 fails the Litmus Test

Why is it that using poorly re-scaled adult models to represent children seems to be such a consistent Broken Window with rough game launches?

Doubt.
From a perf stand-point, all versions of the Switch are the same and the OLED upgrade feels like a technological thing, where they hadn't thought about other screen tech in 2017. I would expect the Switch 2 to have only one OLED model, and then smaller "lite" versions down the line that are smaller but otherwise the same in terms of specs. I don't see Nintendo ever offering mid-gen upgrades for their machines.
Having a SteamDeck "lite" might be a good idea, though I'm not sure about the target audience. Like with phones, there's a vocal minority that says they want a smaller product, but people really going to buy it?
This is what Nintendo did for the Switch. There was the OG Switch, later on Nintendo did the Switch Lite but they also did an upgraded switch which had an even bigger battery life than the original launch Switch, this one likely has to do with the Nvidia bypass that all those original Switches had, so they had to release a new version, and years later they finally released the OLED model. For the most part there have been 4 different Switches released since 2017.

I thought you ment upgrades that might affect game performance. I can see Valve offering a Steam Deck 1 with improved battery, if they can do so without having to get a better chip or make the device bigger or heavier, which seems unrealistic.

For those unaware, Konami plans to launch METAL GEAR SOLID Master Collection Vol.1 on October 24th. Just so you know, this collection will be locked at 1080p, even on PC. And here’s the bummer: the first Metal Gear Solid game won’t go above 30fps. Not only that but from what we can see, the games are not even running at native 1080p resolution. Instead, Konami has upscaled the games to that resolution, meaning that their internal resolution is significantly lower. Yes, we’re talking about 720p. Ouch.

Even if it was just a Steam code in a box, PC versions sure would be nice for all the other goodies...
I'll probably be grabbing the barebones edition of this on Switch. Already ordered P3P.

I've started collecting a few physical games - mostly ones I adore, but I still hate collectors editions. They take up so much space and you've got a bunch of future landfill slowly deteriorating no matter how you store it.

P4G is one of my all-time favourites, so no surprise I'm grabbing it. I also grabbed the Japanese physical edition of Final Fantasy X|X-2 - both games on one cart is super cool!

The whole situation with Harebrained Schemes is sad. I'm glad they still exist - I imagine Paradox was going to finish them off when they ceased support of LL.

But will they survive? I hope so, and I hope they make another CRPG. Their Shadowrun games weren't perfect, but they were special for sure. I still can't fathom why they didn't make a World of Darkness CRPG when Paradox owned them. Maybe Lamplighters was already in development when they were scooped up, or maybe Paradox just didn't want to compete with Bloodlines 2. Either way, I doubt there will ever be a WoD CRPG now, from anyone.

Okay, if AW2 isn't playable at okay settings for me, I will refund and buy on PS5 instead. I've waited 13 years to continue the story and I will continue it.

Some thing to note about settings, if Remedy does things similarly to Control is that "Low" doesn't mean "super ugly" here. In Control, the PS5 version corresponded to Low, in fact, some things were lower than Low settings on PC, and it arguably still looked nice.

If you can't hit 60 with High settings on PC, for example, then I doubt a switch to PS5 with its stable 30 FPS mode, which might again correspond to Low-ish settings on PC, will be a huge improvement, You'd be able to get that same experience or better by just running at 30 on your PC.

Modders should be able to fix the resolution, at least. I think framerates will be what they are - game logic is probably tied to it so you may make the game unplayable by cranking it up.

But I'm not sure it's that big of a deal anyway. Will these games look better with the resolution jacked up? I'm not convinced. And frankly, I think MGS1 will look worse at higher resolutions.

In Remedys defense, my PC is 7 years old, I don't expect my PC to crush the game at all, but Im hoping for some decency.

Scaling required smfdh
Those requirements seem kinda crazy but that's kinda expected with how Remedy seems to push graphics hard. Kind of disappointed that upscaling seems to be requirement and not a way to optionally boost performance.

Hopefully the console sales for AW2 are good enough for Remedy to make a profit because I don't think PC sales are going to be good considering the high system requirements and it being EGS only.

I finished Phantom Liberty and boy that was a wild ride. Just like the original CP2077 it's one of those games where I let the credits scroll where I just sat there and thought "Damn, that's going to stick with me for a while". They also went hard on the spy thriller influence with the credits having that Bond theme feel, it's so good that it is my current repeat song.

Though, thinking some more about it, I'm not Sony target audience anymore I guess. That's unfortunate, I'm not saying that as a posture, I loved cinematic action games or whatever the trendy lingo, but that... passed. I'm not sure what I want, and it's not an arcade experience, but it's certainly not a cinematic fest. I'm here to play, not watch a poorly written and/or paced movie.

I think the problem is a lot of these cinematic action games are actually not that good but get praised because of their high production values and are sometimes well-written.

I like AAA games but they need more depth to them, shouldn't be too long or large for the sake of satisfying some $ per hour ratio and need to prioritise good gameplay over being a roller coaster ride.

Naughty Dog pioneered (and mastered) the formula, but outside of their games a large portion of Sony's first party cinematic action games are trite and boring unless you want to be thrilled by some barely playable setpieces.

I think the RE2 and RE4 remakes are recent examples of quality AAA games that don't sacrifice gameplay depth for flashy and expensive setpieces, and aren't bloated out with horrible lite-RPG mechanics or a functionally useless open world that adds nothing to the game other than a bunch of icons on a map. The stories, while not particularly deep, are super fun and campy too, which is no bad thing.

And people harp on about Kojima games having too many cutscenes, but at least they have good gameplay systems. Can you really say the same for a large chunk of modern AAAs?

A bad AAA game (in my view) is something like God of War (2018). Pointlessly long, no gameplay depth, useless RPG mechanics that nevertheless make my head hurt, flashy sequences that you barely play, and the controls are so weighty it feels like you're carrying the weekly shop from the car to the kitchen. I think if you don't care about the story in that game, it has nothing else of value.

One day graphics card prices will be reasonable enough that I can build a new system without feeling dirty and play these new games with all the fancy effects. That day is not today.

Tiny bit of anecdotal evidence, but I saw a trailer for it at the theater last night. I've also seen more online buzz about it compared to Mario Wonder, but that is just from my little bubble. Sales wise, Spidey 2 will be one of the biggest games of the year and around the same ballpark as Zelda and Hogwarts.
