I am trying to watch Domestic Kanojo and I am not sure I can do it haha. Rui went from extremely interesting to cliché in record time, which bummed me out. Totally understand the soap opera appeal though! I will keep watching on and see if I can make it.

I really want another romance show in a similar vein as Golden Time. There was drama sure, but there was more maturity in how it handled the romance themes.

Oh, but that opening song in Domestic Kanojo is absolutely amazing! Watching and listening to that is worth it.

Nice articles! It also took me a while to figure out what made me uncomfortable about the first one, so here we go.

I first really take issue with that general view of politics as a simplistic left/right thing. It doesn't even fit the current model of events where they need an alt-right for people who think fascism and hate is the new cool. It's a bit of a nitpick but often left/right in the US doesn't mean the same thing as elsewhere in the world. I tend to prefer thinking of politics as a more granular thing, addressing individual problems.

My main discomfort comes from that feeling that such articles reduce these stories and works to their political facets. I think they are definitively right to point out the rise of thinly-veiled glorification of the military and being an instrument for the Japanese state, but it's a little much to discard the story's value entirely. Hell, most of the historical samurai manga and anime we love so much is incredibly revisionist, or takes huge liberties with historical accuracy.

In the end, I'd guess that most people just don't care because the story really moves us, because it feels like what the tale is telling matters. I think it'd be insulting the intelligence of the viewer to think them so vulnerable to twisting history and training to whitewash atrocities. You can enjoy the story being its own fictional thing while being aware some things are just bearing a distant relationship to history and reality.

I feel saying an anime is leftist or conservative is hugely reductive, being so blunt and useless a qualification. It does a huge disservice to the stories it actually tells and seems to carry the implication a work of art is good or bad because of that label that's attributed because of arbitrary story and world elements.

To me, as long as art, as the art of animation isn't treated as a dedicated vehicle for ideologies, I'm good. Things start being a problem when telling stories matter less to someone than advocating for a given political ideology, be it Japanese Imperialism and elitism or railing against Capitalism. Incidentally, stories that are just about being an excuse for such propaganda usually suck and go on being ignored as shallow and stupid more often than not.

Also, on the topic of animation, I can't recommend The Canipa Effect enough. It's a great channel with a lot of insight and even industry interviews.

Been watching Attack on Titan Final Season, Beastars Season 2, and The Promised Neverland Season 2.

AoT and Beastars have been wonderful. Can't say I'm a fan of MAPPA's decision to use CG for the Attack Titan, Cart Titan, Beast Titan, and Armored Titan, but they've done a wonderful job with the Collosus transformation scenes. The Collosus has looked better in every scene of this season compared tot he past seasons. So, the positives and negatives balance out. Orange has continued the quality they showcased in season one of Beastars. Only thing I miss are the multiple alternating ending themes that were present in the previous season. This season's ED is awesome so it's not a big complaint.

The Promised Neverland Season 2 is absolute garbage. I was actually hoping they would alter the story somewhat as I was unhappy with the manga's final arcs, but they instead butchered the entire story by omitting the actually good material that wasn't adapted yet, and cutting straight to the garbage content from the end of the manga. Wtf?

from what i managed to read up it was either this way of superush to end with the help of manga author or no S2 :grimacing-face:

They cut the hunting ground arc. The anime is totally not worth watching without it. :disappointed-face:

Jujutsu Kaisen is continuing to be great. Mappa's been killing it.
:ohyeaht:

I'm also halfway through Gate Season 2. It's pretty fun.

And I just started watching Slime Isekai Season 2.
I feel right back at home, the art and animation are so clean. Can't wait until they get to a certain part (will probably the season climax). :blob_hype:

Also very curious about Wonder Egg Priority, will likely be checking that one out too in due time.

I'm delaying it as much as I can but I'm pretty sure Log Horizon S3 is going to pull me in completely.

This better not pull an Akudama drive, be super compelling only to nosedive so hard I couldn't watch past ep 8.

Hey, I still need to watch dorohedoro!
Well, don't worry as this is not an original show, and the impressions (up to book 6) so far are pretty good. Can't speak for it though as I haven't read it.

I did read a bit of this one. Wasn't in the mood of grimdark sci-fi at the time of reading so I put the novel back on my shelf after 20~30 pages, but the premise is really promising and word of mouth is pretty good as well. Definitely a must watch to me.

Said to be one of the best lightnovels on the market. Looks really dope!

What did I just watch ?
On the other hand, it's cool. It started sane (and very boring), then... :hushed-face:

How was Deca-Dence ? Any recommendations for what recent anime to watch ?

I can't believe they're actually making it.

Just started watching anime again after a small break. Starting with Jujutsu Kaisen and it's been great will probably catch up be the end of the weekend. Also started Mushoku Tensei since I heard it was one of the original Isekai LNs.

Slowly doing a GIntama rewatch as well since I love that series and the final movie was recently released.

I might pick up Wonder Egg Priority since I've been hearing good things about it.

What happened to the studio, whose name I forgot, that suffered a tragic fire some years ago ?
Do they still make anime ?

KyoAni (Kyoto Animation), they released the Violet Evergarden Movie last September and they're working on the 2nd season of Kobayashi's Dragon Maid for the summer season.
Thank you. Is it me or have they drastically reduced their output ? Not really surprising given the combo of the tragedy and covid, though.
I like their art, I should watch something from them, Hyouka maybe ?

Baccano

Gatchaman Crowd
Higashi no Eden
Hyouka

Did I select wisely ? Still in need of rec for recent anime, my references, as seen here, are aging.

Deca-Dence was very good.

Some recent-ish things:
Akudama Drive
Ascendance of a Bookworm
Dorohedoro
ID: Invaded
Thunderbolt Fantasy
Granbelm
Demon Slayer
Jujutsu Kaisen

would be some recs off the top of my head.

Baccano
Durarara
Gatchaman Crowd
Higashi no Eden
Hyouka
Nichijou

Baccano, Durarara and Gatchaman Crowds are very good.
Hyouka and Nichijo are generally also held in high regard.
Don't know anything about Higashi no Eden.

Downunder.

I love Hataraku Maou-sama. Excited to see it.

Probably Kyoani's best work, it's one of those anime where you plan just to watch a few episodes but ended up watching the entire two seasons. If you like mecha anime, check out Full Metal Panic! as well, also produced by Kyoani.

Majo no Tabitabi was a pleasant surprise from last season. I have a soft spot for these journey-themed anime.

New Godzilla S.P (Singular Point) promotional video. Anime is a joint production by studios Bones and Orange. It's looking really good.
They are getting better and better at planning and integrating the CG content it seems. Still, I'm afraid that it won't have anything as compelling to say at Hideaki Anno's.

A rare case of monster designs looking worse than the 3D tech used to animate them

One thing I gathered from reading a synopsis involves the characters changing themselves for the better and overcoming their personal obstacles and such. This is what has me interested in watching it.

Maybe I'm alone in this but I feel like Japan, as much as I love a huge part of their culture, still have antiquated mental health views. I'm notably thinking of A Silent Voice where the victim ended up being blamed for trying to commit suicide. In the end, she felt agony over the guilt, apologized for her own attempt regardless of the distress that caused her to do it, and suddenly everything was alright. The people who drove her to it suddenly were BFFs with her and... Yeah. No accountability regarding the "circle of friends" or any kind of questioning of the society that made all this happen in the first place.

It was honestly pretty bad from my standpoint, so that's why I'm wary of series like Wonder Egg that try to tackle these themes. I fear they'll go at them with a huge lack of understanding and end up doing a terrible job of it with forced morals that feel more invalidating and stupid than anything else. I think Evangelion was one of the only series that truly felt right from that standpoint, that portrayed what it's like accurately.

Cool. I guess the strange voice telling to do things threw me for a loop. Seems to be a lot nicer that I thought.
But can you blame me ? Japan is on top of this game of making soul wrenching shit. I was reminded of Mawaru Penguindrum some days ago, and admittedly I didn't watch the series, just the start. But it began more or less light hearted, then in episode 2 they introduce a creepy girl stalker, and fast forward to the last episode, that I had the opportunity to skim through and... what the fuck is happening here ? :sweaty-blob:

Essentially, it's about a group of people who all had someone in their life who has committed suicide who now try to "revive" them by helping other potential suicide victims in a dreamworld by fighting off monsters that are their abusers/bullys etc. It goes all the range on the question of why people would want to do that, from bullying and abuse, to cultlike fans who want to follow their idol and even assisted suicide for comatose people.

As well as several other topic, like what it means to grow up without a dad and such.

Despite the dark subject matter, i would say it is by and large an uplifting show thus far, but of course, when it gets dark, it gets sad.

Starting to watch your seasonals towards the end of a season is comfy (well I started some a bit earlier, but then waited again and technically some are going to still run for a season, but still!)

Slime Isekai season 2 is as good as expected.
No surprises with Re:Zero Season 2-2 either, excellent stuff.
Caught up with Spider Isekai, great stuff as well. Aoi Yuuki is just killing it with her Kumoko performance, it's a delight.

And caught up with Back Arrow too and continue to dig it. It's an initially simple enough set up that is used to great effect and there's always new stuff expanding on it, with fun characters, nice action and a nice dose of comfy and absurd stuff sprinkled inbetween the action and conflicts.

How can you call yourself a mad scientist if you don't have your personail choir singing while performing your inhumane experiments?

This season has a surprising amount of stuff.
Still have Wonder Egg Priority on my list and there's a bunch of other potential stuff too.
