Looks like I'm in Q3. Makes sense since it said that I was after Q2 originally. Hopefully I will be able to order one sometime in July. Since I will be traveling overseas towards the end of August.

The battery life for the ps2 emulator is not really good, i hope it will improve in the future
I didn’t look into this but isn’t the Deck basically a plugged in portable, anyways ?
True, as Phawx showed, there are ways to mitigate this, but at the end of the day I personally will try to use it that way.
Really unfortunate, but batteries are batteries.

Battery is really a bummer but I can adjust. You just have to plug it in constantly, or keep it plugged in when playing more demanding games.

Anyone successfully hooked up an external display? I read some more into it and it seems a recent patch broke it somehow.
I tried a different hub and it's also not working for me.
I did, several different display using different docking HW, but that was months ago. I can check again tomorrow on the current SW.

I think it depends on the game. On the low end in terms of power use, you had 5 hours (King's Field IV), on the top end, it was a bit over 2 hours. Given that PS2 emulators still are pretty demanding in terms of CPU, as well as having a 60 FPS game with not totally trivial 3D graphics, it's not that surprising you still end up at around 20W total system draw.

Also Phawx was using widescreen patches, I guess the load on the system would be lower if he'd stick with the original 4:3.

So now that I'm finished with Elden Ring (and From games), I have to really look into the deck. Are there good guide about its possibilities and how to use it ? How do I even put files on there ? I'm thinking about VN and uncensor patchs, how do you put the files on the deck ?

GamingOnLinux continuously uploads guides to YouTube

But generally think of it as PC - how would you get these things on your PC? Nowadays that's generally online ( or i guess via USB sticks). It's not an android device so you can't plug it into your main computer, like you wouldn't plug your laptop into your computer, but there's means of file transfer (also in the playlist i just linked), there's dropbox, email, google drive, and of course just downloads :)

Of course, the linux file system structure is a bit different, but most people will get the idea fairly quickly if they needs to mod their Deck games manually

  • Improved support for game initiated requests to load webpages through the Steamworks SDK.
  • Added FPS only mode to the performance overlay
  • Reorganized and restyled some information on downloads page
  • Fixed and optimized layout for sections of Store on Deck
  • Fixed comments not displaying in activity feeds
  • Fixed localized game headers not displaying in some locations in the UI
  • Fixed post game summary not scrolling correctly
  • Fixed "Recently Played" friends sometimes showing up in a weird state
  • Fixed bugs and crashes with the configurator
I raised some bugs I noticed in the controller configurator and seems they are on it, got a response from a dev there.

Sorry for this potato quality picture but it was really late and I took it as I could, but I'm sure prudis will be happy to know that FFXII does work (it was one of the games he wanted to play on Deck) so yay!

I installed Minigalaxy for GOG games and I have no idea how to configure Wine to be able to run the games. None of them so far work. DOS games just open the DOS box and that's it, Windows games show a grey window and nothing happens.
Native Linux games work fine of course.

I'm confused with the Deck's power usage. While playing Dark Souls 3 without FPS cap, the Deck is using 25.5W. But the stats are showing that the CPU is using 8-10W and the GPU 4W. Where's the rest of the power going to?

And when I lock the FPS to 30, the CPU and GPU are using about the same amount of power, but the total power consumed drops from 25.5W tot 16.5W...

I got my tracking code sent just now. Check your emails/account page for tracking.
Helpful tip (?) : GLS is not great on front facing infos. When the package is in transit they will send you a mail with a link to reschedule if you know you will be absent on the mystery day of delivery. You must follow that link, even if you don't want a reschedule, to know the date and time slot of your delivery.
Not the most intuitive system that.

I tried to remote play Muramasa (unsupported VN as far as I know) on the Deck and it was... some level of disaster / great ?
On the very poor front, journos kept telling SteamOS was still rough and, ayup, right they were. So if I want to change the control layout, I can... err... do small change with a long press on the menu button. I can also go in the setting menu of the game in SteamOS UI (the little crank) and configure the layout. But I'm also pretty certain that I can do the same by pressing the steam button in game. It's overwhelming as fuck.
And it... didn't really work ? Some changes stuck, some didn't.
Am I right in thinking that Muramase, being controller compatible with a shit-tier layout, is overriding my changes ? I mean, I could assign D-Pad Up and Down to mouse wheel Up and Down, but B / Circle to open menu only worked temporarily, only for the game to revert to a moronic B / Circle to close the game.

Pretty glorious otherwise. Obviously a little small, a little noisy, but good IQ* in game and Remote Play works far better than on my Ipad.

*one of the layout config menu thing rendered in super low res though, with texts hard to read

Ok, added the files needed to uncensor two games.
Now to decide what I would like to emulate and move everything in place. This would be so much simpler with a mouse. Gimme that hub, Valve !
...
PS2 ? The answer is most probably P... oh fuck, SNES !

Finally managed to get an external screen going. I have to power down and boot up WITH the hub and screen already connected and then it works.
But I have to say the Desktop experience is not that great, at least in terms of games.

Games recognize the Steam Input from the Deck and will ignore M+KB and therefore not work really well. I wish it would act as a PC environment when launching games from desktop mode, but sadly it still prioritizes the Deck control scheme and mostly overwrite input. I am using Bluetooth devices so maybe that is the problem - would be neat if someone could check for me how it is for them.

Am I the only one with timeout issues when trying to update the Deck ? I mean when it works it's instant, but 3/4 of the times I try I get a 'Checking' message then later a pop up saying that there was an 'Update Error'.
Beta branch.

FWIW, I also have that behaviour when trying it now on the current software stack. I am almost certain that this was not the case a few months back -- the good part about that is that if they broke it in software they can also fix it again in software!

The couple Warpinator / Winpinator works very well for file transfers. It's pretty quick too.
Works so well that I think I will use Winpinator on my mother's desktop from now on, too.

This is just speculation based on how these things frequently work, but I could imagine that the individual CPU/GPU numbers are estimates based on the current load profile, and not as accurate as the total (which I believe is an actual measurement that comes directly from the battery circuitry and is very accurate).

I tried Dying Light 2 with the newst patch. They put in very low setting and it makes the game run at 60fps with dips to 30 in more crowded areas. (FSR Ultra). Not the main way I would want to play that game, but it certainly is possible now.

In general the Steam Deck made me reconsider what games I buy, it's kinda amazing.
I don't have a RTX card yet and I only have access to a gaming PC like every two weeks for a few days. So I would wish the "docked" experience would be a bit better but there is hope for them to improve the experience with the official dock coming out soon.
